We Are Verot... A Look Inside In this issue, we celebrate the Class of 2018. Out of the 150 graduates, 99% will be attending college in the fall, with 11 of them choosing a Catholic institution. This exceptionally driven group of graduates were awarded over $11.8 million in scholarships and completed approximately 20,000 service hours over their four years. With statistics like these, it is easy to see why so many families choose Bishop Verot Catholic High School. On page 14, read about a special new tradition incorporated into this year’s commencement ceremony and join us in congratulating the Class of 2018 (pages 8 – 13).

Making Catholic education a priority is a sacrifice for any family. One of the many Verot traditions is the honoring of families who have chosen Bishop Verot High School for four or more of their children, once their final child crosses the stage. At this year’s commencement ceremony, five families were given the Award for Commitment to Catholic Education.

While all of our families are special, the Linden family, also the recipient of the Bishop Augustin Verot Award for Service to the School, has a special story. Mary-Rose (O’Connor) ’82 met her husband, John, in the Verot parking lot over 39 years ago. Their six children are all Verot graduates, and two of their sons married their high school sweethearts, also Verot alumni (pictured below). What a true Viking legacy!

Our 56 year history has seen a lot of growth and bringing with it the need for constant changes. If not for the generosity of the many Viking families all the improvements would not be possible. It is with tremendous gratitude we share in this issue

our benefactors (pages 18 - 30). It is by giving back you ensure the future.

On pages 31 - 37 you will see the many sponsors who helped make this year’s Gala one of the most successful and well attended in recent years. Especially exciting was the alumni presence and the positive response received as they returned to their alma mater. And not only was there a great response to the Gala by our alumni, the Bishop Verot Alumni Association events have had a great turn out as well. The most recent gathering held at Tim Frederic’s (class of 1996) Marlin’s Brewhouse had 50 – 60 alumni in attendance. You can check out the pictures and future events scheduled on page 38.

As we said goodbye to the Class of 2018, we also said farewell to some longtime members of the Verot family – Mrs. Lynn Knox, Mrs. Mary Kistel, and Ms. Candace O’Brien all retired this year. We are grateful for their many years of dedication and wish them much happiness in their retirement.

Here in the Advancement Office, we also said goodbye to Ms. Gina Lombardo, Development Director. We wish her much luck as she embarks on a new adventure taking her across the country and closer to her family. Please join us in gratitude as we wish these four special ladies the best in their future endeavors.

The season of Verot Visit Days will begin this fall as 8th graders and their parents begin the process of choosing a high school. If you or someone you know has an 8th grader, please encourage them to consider Bishop Verot High School.

Just a few weeks ago, I was honored to welcome our newest graduates with their diplomas. On May 19 at 2:00 p.m., the Bishop Verot Alumni Association proudly grew from 6,289 to 6,444 as 150 seniors received their venerated Bishop Verot diploma. Even more inspiring was to firsthand witness the strong tradition continue as 15 graduates had their diploma awarded to them by one or both of their parents who are also graduates of Bishop Verot.

When I moved to Fort Myers in 1994 to teach math at Verot, I never imagined the feeling of being home as I do with each student, parent, and community member I meet. The feeling I had with my own alma mater, Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, PA, has seamlessly translated to 5598 Sunrise Drive. A place I proudly call home. A 1995 graduate, Mr. Tracey Beverly, wrote it best. He wrote: On 5598 Sunrise Drive, There’s a place I call home, A secluded avenue of warmth, a boulevard of amity that nurtures humility and benevolence; there I have grown.

There you find your treasures in those who dwell.

The family is your strength, the community your honor.

The emphasis is on your character, not whether you succeed or fail.

I’d stand up and defend, this institution of grace, on any territory, or against any opponent.

My inspiration in despair, keeps me joyful with a candid face.

Yet soon I’ll have to leave, and venture highways ahead.

I’m fearless, I’m motivated with desire.

I’ve been taught to love life, and to think of my brother.

A cruel and unusual world awaits me eagerly in the mists, the miscreants will be rugged, and tempt my inner control, but I’m glad I learned to pilot my head miles before my fists.

In my eyes no other can ever – ever ascend above, Because I know a place so dear to my heart, where I know that I am loved.

May the sun never set on 5598 Sunrise Drive.

It is my hope all our alumni, when looking back on their time here, remember the feeling of home. I encourage you to stop in for a visit - you will always be welcomed home.

Alumni Graduating Alumni A New Tradition

ishop Verot has long been known for its many traditions with our alumni sharing memories across the generations. At the Class of 2018 Graduation Ceremony a new tradition was started. With second and third generation Vikings walking the halls the idea to include those choosing their alma mater for their own children in graduation was born.

On Saturday, May 19th, 15 Verot alumni presented a Bishop Verot High School diploma to their son or daughter.

The overwhelmingly positive response, as well as the emotion displayed on the faces of our alumni, proves this to be a great new tradition. Fr. Casey’s Corner For so many of us, the summer months can afford time for some relaxation. This notion is especially true in Southwest Florida, where we see things “slow down” over the summer. The snowbirds have retreated, the days grow longer, and school is out - time to find some space for peace. I also find summer offers a great opportunity to spend some quiet time with the Lord, reflecting on his movement in my own life. As I did so this week, the words of an old American Hymn came to my mind: My life flows on in endless song above earth’s lamentation, I catch the sweet, though far-off hymn that hails a new creation No storm can shake my inmost calm While to that refuge clinging Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing?

This past year has seen its share of storms and lamentations amidst the laughter, joy, and gladness a life rooted in friendship with Jesus Christ brings. As we saw yet another group of amazing Vikings cross the stage to join the ranks of Verot Alumni, the peels of thunder and fall of rain could be heard in the Nevins gymnasium, and as we marched outside in academic regalia, we were greeted with a premature summer downpour. But this did not stop the smiles, the shouts of joy, the affectionate embraces, and the warm, proud smiles on the faces of parents and teachers alike. No storm can shake us indeed.

This year, the storms were many and strong, but nothing compared to the resolve with which they were met. We suffered through Hurricane Irma; school violence in the news; and the deep, personal struggles in the lives of our students, who faced illness, adversity, struggle, and loss. Yet, as Vikings do, they persevered. Our motto “Non Excidet” speaks of one who does not give up, who does not fall out, and who will not fail.

Affixed to the coat of arms of St. Francis DeSales, one could say this motto is an embellishment of the oft cited verses “I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound; in any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and want. I can do all things in him who strengthens me.” (Phil. 4:12-13) The “secret” St. Paul has found is the secret we try to deliver to our students - a life rooted in Jesus Christ gives purpose to every struggle, and gives us what we need to face any adversity. This grace was apparent this year, as storms cleared, injuries healed, illnesses were overcome, grief was met and courses concluded, victory was won in Jesus Christ, who won the battle for us all long ago.

In our own lives as we learn daily what it is to Live Jesus, may we cling to him our refuge, may we be inspired by the perseverance we share as a Verot family and embrace challenge in the name of the Lord Jesus. Non Excidet~ We will not fail! BV BISHOP VEROT ALUMNI MAGAZINE

Frederick W. Schaerf, M.D., Ph.D. Neuroscience Scholarship Fund nervous system disorders to Southwest Florida. This impacted thousands of residents who would not have otherwise had such opportunities. Dr. Schaerf was appointed by the State Surgeon General to serve on the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Grant Advisory Board for the State of Florida,the only Southwest Florida physician to be so appointed.

Dr. Schaerf began psychiatric practice in Southwest Florida in1989, having been the Chief Resident in Psychiatry at John Hopkins in Baltimore. He served on several boards and supported numerous local charitable causes and community initiatives. The Schaerf family have been strong supporters and believers in Verot, and Dr. Schaerf’s passion for medical science has been evident in his memorable presentations at Career Days and Pre-Med Club.

While the primary purpose of this fund is to help high school students, it is also their hope to encourage philanthropy in their own children, Ally ’18 and Freddy ’21, in leading by example. Bishop Verot is grateful for the addition of this scholarship fund and the opportunity it offers students. BV

n May 2018, Frederick W. Schaerf, M.D., Ph.D., and Melissa Schaerf established the Frederick W. Schaerf, M.D., Ph.D., Neuroscience Scholarship Fund in the amount of $100,000. The fund will provide tuition assistance for Bishop Verot students with financial need who wish to pursue a career in neuroscience.

Dr. Schaerf founded and was the principal investigator at Neuropsychiatric Research Center of Southwest Florida, and Melissa Schaerf, A.R.N.P., is the site director. The 6th Annual Gala and Auction This year’s gala was held in the Nevin’s Gymnasium on Saturday, April 14th. The Denim & Diamonds themed event had the highest attendance in recent years, including a record number of alumni, with guests casually dressed and ready to take a ride on the mechanical bull. Along with both a silent and live auction, mechanical bull riding contest, dinner, and dancing, the 2018 Alumni of the Year, the Stejskal family, were also inducted.

t may be summer but the Bishop Verot Alumni Association is still busy planning exciting alumni events for you as well as working to broaden awareness.

The Alumni Association’s Happy Hour at the Marlins Brewhouse was not only packed with Viking alumni but is also owned by Tim Frederic, a 1996 Verot grad himself. The June event saw a record crowd reconnecting alumni across the decades. Members of the Bishop Verot Athletic Booster Club were also in attendance offering their support of the Alumni Association as well as encouraging alumni involvement in the booster club and Verot sporting events.

Daniel Andrews ’09 Daniel was awarded the NewsPress Young Professional of the Year award in February. Daniel is the co-founder of Captains for Clean Water, a non-profit organization working to restore the natural flow of Lake Okeechobee water south to the Everglades and Florida Bay.

Samantha Farah ’09 Samantha graduated from The University of Charleston in Charleston, West Virginia, in May, earning the degree Doctor of Pharmacy. Because she is passionate about helping those who serve and protect us, Samantha accepted a residency at the VA Hospital in Beckley, WV. She currently resides in Charleston.

Katie Clinger ’10 Katie is excited to announce her marriage to Richy Scafidi.

The couple exchanged vows on March 24, 2018 at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club.

They met while attending the University of Central Florida and currently reside in Tampa, Florida. After graduating UCF with a Molecular & Microbiology degree, Katie became part of the Clinical Specialist team with Boston Scientific. Richy is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and loves working at the VA Hospital in Tampa.

Mary Keezel ’10 Mary will graduate from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in May, 2018 with a Doctorate of Medicine in Dentistry. She will be starting her Orthodontics Residency this summer at Jacksonville University’s School of Orthodontics.

Christina Rinaldi ’10 Christina will be attending Wake Forest Baptist Medical Residency Program for Internal Medicine beginning this summer. She received her Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biology from Florida State University and this spring, received her conferral of the degree Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Georgia Campus.

Upon completion of the Residency Program, Christina plans to return to Florida to practice medicine as a hospitalist. Her favorite memories are still of her time spent at Bishop Verot.

Gunnar Gibson ’12 Gunnar received a grant through FGCU’s Siedler Fellowship Grant to travel to South Africa and produce a film on post apartheid conditions, one generation since Nelson Mandela ended the system.

Gunnar and his team were in South Africa for five weeks interviewing museum directors, university lecturers, students, and company presidents for the project. In February, the film “Liberation: One Generation After Apartheid” premiered on campus.

The film looks at the history of apartheid, its end in the 90’s, and how the social injustices manifest themselves

today. Jacob Herring ’13 created the soundtrack for the film.

Mark Wagner ’12 Mark graduated from LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia in May 2016. After a very successful playing career at LaGrange. including three consecutive trips to the NCAA DIII National Basketball Tournament, he remained as an Assistant Coach for the LaGrange College Men’s Basketball Team for the 2017 season, which again made the National Tournament for the fourth year in a row. Mark is currently a 2nd year law student at Ave Maria School of Law in Naples, and was elected President of the Sports & Entertainment

Law Society, responsible for all sports functions, guest speakers, and related activities. Mark is scheduled to graduate May 2020.

Chelsea Snider Hart ’13 and Jacob Hart ’13 Jacob and Chelsea will be celebrating their 1st wedding anniversary on August 12th, 2018. High school sweethearts, they have been together since junior year at Verot. Chelsea and Jacob both graduated from FSU with their bachelor degrees and now attend graduate school at the University of Central Florida. Chelsea is pursuing a Doctorate of Physical Therapy and Jacob is pursuing a PhD in Conservational Biology.

FAU BASEBALL

Owenby posted a great season for the Aggies, and was a major part of the team’s conference championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament. The senior posted a 3-2 record with a 3.12 ERA, making seven starts for the MEAC Champions. Owenby struck out 25 hitters on the season, and appeared in 15 total games. He was able to complete his collegiate career with two appearances in the Chapel Hill regional, where he tossed a scoreless inning against Purdue.

CJ Alexander ‘15

In his first season with the Owls, Nizza was an everyday starter, and helped FAU to within one run of the NCAA Super Regional round. He started 35 games, driving in 14 runs and scored 27. His efforts helped FAU to the Gainesville Regional in the NCAA Tournament, where the Owls earned three wins.

During those five games, Nizza recorded five hits, including a home run in an elimination game against Columbia. He added three runs batted in and three runs scored, as well.

Thaddeus Ward ‘15

STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA BASEBALL

The 2015 Verot alum was named the Florida Junior College Player of the Year for his play at State College of Florida. At SCF this season, Alexander belted 15 home runs and drove in 64 runs, all while hitting .405. The sophomore also stole ten bases and had a .488 on base percentage. Alexander will continue his career at the professional level after being picked in the 20th round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Atlanta Braves.

UCF BASEBALL

Ward completed his college career with another stellar season at UCF. As one of the team’s most trusted pitchers, he struck out 84 pitchers over 63.1 innings, and earned three wins.

He tossed six scoreless innings against Oklahoma in the final lengthy outing of his UCF career. The righthander’s efforts were rewarded on June 5, when he was selected in the fifth round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox. He will begin his professional career as a member of the Lowell Spinners.

Nicole Rodriguez ‘17 JACKSONVILLE STATE SOFTBALL

Rodriguez, a member of Verot’s 2016 state championship team, was in the rotation for the Gamecocks in her first season on campus. She tossed 60.2 innings, and struck out 56 hitters.

Rodriguez’s signature performance came on April 8, when she struck out ten Tennessee State hitters in a complete game victory. She made her first postseason appearance, as well, pitching in an NCAA Regional against eventual national champion Florida State.

STEM4Students Several junior Scholars Academy students will be returning to the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee to provide a four day summer STEM camp to 100 underprivileged 2nd grade students. By providing an educational STEM camp, they hope to demonstrate there are ways to share our bilingual and academic gifts with impoverished communities, outside of just food and clothing drives, while opening eyes to the students in those communities to the unlimited potential existing in pursuit of STEM careers. To raise funds for the camp, students duct taped a teacher to the wall with purchased tape. Mr. Jim Orr and Mr. David Zukin both graciously volunteered to participate.

Girls Going Places Conference Five of our freshman girls attended the Girls Going Places Conference on Wednesday, May 9th at FGCU. Hosted by the Alliance Financial Group, students were able to meet with prominent women business owners and professionals.

These women led students through a series of interactive activities and discussions centered on becoming leaders of tomorrow, broadening their understanding of the business world, creating an awareness of entrepreneurship, and highlighting the advantages of financial independence. Athena Addis, Mary Cossentino, Kate McCarty, Molly Farrell, and Isabella Koll are pictured with Florida State Representative Heather Fitzenhagen.

Digital Video Awards Students in the Digital Video program competed in the Lee County Student Film Festival with the submission of their documentary on Blue Line Bears, a non-profit started by fellow student Megan O’Grady. Alex Quattrone and Samantha Romero, film producers, won awards in the Documentary, Sports, News Show, and News Package categories.

Career Day The annual Career Day, held each spring, gives students an opportunity to learn more about a number of career paths. Parents, community members, and alumni volunteers spend a couple of hours sharing their professional experiences as well as educational requirements with interested students.
