As I sit humbly at my desk in this hallowed office preparing to write my first letter for the B&G Magazine, I cannot help but reminisce about the great leaders who have transformed Bishop Verot Catholic High School from its inauspicious start into, arguably, the highest performing high school in Southwest Florida: Father Tom Hopkins, Father Chris Hudgin, Father Hugh McGuigan, Father Chris Beretta, and Mr. John Cavell to name the most recent. These respected principals were essential to the growth and accomplishments of BV but, like all good leaders, they did not succeed without the dedication and support of those willing to work behind the scenes. Mr. Ron Davis, Ms. Judy Springston, Ms. Cathy Fox, Mr. Kevin Gaines, and Mr. Bill Stejskal, to name just a few, worked tirelessly to support the principals and their vision. I am truly awestruck by the mention of their names and the amount of work they did, all with no intention of receiving the honor and recognition they so rightly deserve.

Because of all those who came before me and the solid foundation they created, I am fortunate to be able to look into the future and see great things in store for our school.

Our service hours continue to exceed standards, our AP score passing rate is exceptional, and our excellent faculty members have embraced new and innovative ways to bring technology into the classroom; all while improving the underlying educational structure of our school. Our faculty is rivaled only by those at the collegiate level, and the success of our students speaks volumes about the capabilities of our staff.

One accomplishment, which has made me most proud, was the recent visit by Bishop Dewane, the leader of our Diocese who, along with several local priests, came to celebrate Mass with the students. His Excellency was so moved by the students’ reverence, he did not stop at giving us high praise and accolades for their character and comportment. He took it a step further and granted the student body a day off of school. This was the first time Verot has been granted a “Bishop’s Day” since Bishop John J. Nevins did so in 2004, and it is an honor which was not given, nor received, lightly. It is moments such as this in which my excitement for all that is to come is heightened and my pride in everyone involved is solidified.

The vision of Bishop Verot Catholic High School continues to be towards avenues of improvement and growth, both educationally and spiritually. With the assistance of our supportive School Board, our involved parent association, our successful Booster Club, and a renewed and spirited student body, Bishop Verot Catholic High School continues to grow in size, academic endeavors, and in our Faith with Christ. One only needs to have witnessed our Freshman Retreat to have felt the power of the students working together to build our school into a community of faith, and a family of everlasting friendships. What better way to start a school year than with upperclassmen beginning the day by sharing a Mass with the freshmen, and then leading them to various locations within Lee County where they performed acts of selfless service. Although the retreat came to an early end, students were challenged to bear witness to their faith and were enfolded into the Bishop Verot family. And that was all in our first week of school.

I am excited to be re-joining the Bishop Verot community and am humbled by the easy and eager acceptance of the families, students, staff, faculty, and supporters of such an outstanding institution. I thank the alumni, who I knew during my first “tour” at Verot, for your kind messages and words of encouragement, and I thank all those who have come to meet me and share in my vision for a bright and exciting future. Thank you.

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT My Fellow Vikings, I am sure as you read through this Fall issue of the Black and Gold, you are noticing a theme. Bishop Verot Catholic High School is a “community of faith and learning, dedicated to service and centered on Christ.� We live this each and every day. We honor our legacy and the traditions of the first 50 years by preparing for the next 50 years. With the help of our current parents, alumni, faculty, staff and of course our students, we together are paving the way for future generations of Vikings.

I hope that you have had an opportunity to see all of the wonderful changes made to our campus. It is here that you will notice another theme: campus improvements. A fresh coat of paint and some beautiful landscaping are the most visible improvements that welcomed us all to the 2014-2015 school year. The new air conditioning units for the Nevins Gymnasium have been installed. New LED lights have replaced the old lights in the gym and, not only are they energy efficient, but they also now allow instant on/off, so we will not have to light the gym when it is not immediately in use. The cost savings from those two replacements alone will have a significant impact on our monthly utility expenses.

None of these improvements would be possible without the support of our generous donors.

The next step will be to make the campus itself more secure. This will include securing areas such as Beatty Square and modernizing the main entrance.

Our goal as a school family is to create an environment that is safe, inclusive, and supportive of your children. We would not be able to accomplish this and continue to improve our campus without your help. Please consider supporting the future of Bishop Verot by making a donation today.

In the summer of ’69, a young 16 year old boy entered the front gates of the main building of Bishop Verot High School with his parents. Having recently moved from the Midwest, his parents were meeting with Sister Mary Rose, the principal at the time, for the purpose of enrolling him into the school. While he waited, he noticed a bulletin board on the outside of the Front Office. On the board was a list of students who would be entering the Junior class that Fall just as he would. There were 42 students in the class, the Class of ’71.

I remember the day as if it was yesterday.

The changes between then and now are almost to the extreme but good….very good. Having been blessed with being a member of the Verot Faculty for 29 years now, I have been witness to many ebbs and flows. Rising enrollment, growing faculty numbers, expansions of our facilities, movement towards the integration of technology, highly successful athletic teams, and continued academic excellence merely scrape the surface of the list of accomplishments.

Along the way, we have also experienced our fair share of challenges. Perhaps one of the most difficult challenges throughout our 52 years of existence was the change in administration of our school by a religious order (the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany and Oblates of St. Francis DeSales) to that of the Diocese of Venice, which occurred in the year 2010. Coming on the heels of the economic downturn, it was a transition that was unwelcomed by many, but inevitable due to the declining number of Oblates. Despite Bishop Dwane’s best efforts to secure another religious order, it was not to be.

But that storm has passed. The past year has seen a multitude of changes, perhaps the most I have witnessed during my time here. To some, it may seem startling, perhaps unsettling. For others, it’s as if many pieces of a big puzzle are working their way into place, a very good place. It is in that camp that I find myself.

Our technology movement, though certainly still unfolding, has taken major leaps with the inclusion of the 1:1 iPad movement. While dealing with everchanging technological advances, our faculty and students are using technology, unimagined two years ago, in their classrooms on a daily basis. The generosity of a Verot benefactor made that possible.

The traditional classroom setting – one piece desks situated in neat straight rows – is giving way to environments which allow more flexibility, encourage student collaboration, and maximize

the use of Apple TVs and iPads.

Upper classes not yet using iPads across the board utilize student smart phones for research and study in their classrooms. Classic textbooks are beginning to give way to E-Books. We’ve actually had discussions about how much longer we will have the need for personal lockers for all students if all they are carrying around is an iPad. Enrollment is at its highest level, easily exceeding levels of the past five years. At this writing, both the sophomore and freshmen classes are at or near full capacity. The Mary Q. Eller Scholars Academy, identifying our most academically gifted students, enters its second year and will include over 60 sophomores and freshmen. They will be provided with learning opportunities exceeding the norm, enhanced by a growing association and partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University.

Our athletic facilities continue to set the standard for others to follow. Viking Stadium maintains the only artificial turf field in Lee County. Swanson Stadium, home of our perennial state champion-chasing baseball team, is one of the finest baseball fields in the area, as is our Nevins Gymnasium. And, if you have not come by the campus since June, the transformation of the front area of our school and inner plaza, while long overdue, has been amazing!

Unfortunately, the much beloved Cuban Laurel at the front of the school (where it is rumored that Coach Gill had his first kiss…) had to yield to the chainsaw due to an ever-growing tangle of roots which was wreaking havoc on the sidewalk and encroaching on the foundations of the main building and science wing. It was not a decision which came lightly. The changes to this gathering spot came about as a result of the vision and generosity of a Viking parent and alumnus.

And the central core of our school’s mission, our dedication to (community and Christian) service that is centered on Christ, is very much at the root of all that we aspire to be and do. The new school year begins with our Annual Freshman Retreat, with the incoming freshman class led by the seniors; celebrate Mass with our Chaplain, Fr. Goodyear, during the first part of the morning in the Anderson Theater; venture out to nearly one dozen service sites throughout Lee County for half the day; meet later at the home of one of the senior leaders; and end up back on campus for a late evening

prayer service, an overnight sleep-over (gender specific sleeping quarters of course…), and a breakfast together the next morning. In October, another group of Seniors will lead the 35th Live Jesus Retreat. And those are just two of the highlights of our Spiritual journey for the year.

A Truly One of a Kind Dining Experience

Extraordinary Since 1978 One of our dear patron saints, St. Francis de Sales, mentions in one of his writings: “It is very true that in order to surrender ourselves unreservedly to divine providence, we need to be very trusting. But it is also true that when we let go of everything, our Lord takes care of all and manages all.” Often during my years at Verot, I have felt very much that God would take care of us, no matter how trivial or significant the issues may be. I’ve lost track of the times that that trust has been rewarded by His Blessings.

Our Verot motto, “Non Excidet” (we will not fail) says it all too well. BV

Football Legacy

Bill Shields

by Jessica Cole ~ Athletics Administrative Assistant Florida and, ten years later, he became the head football coach at Bishop Verot.

He’s coached a countless number of young men, eighteen of whom have become high school and college head and assistant coaches themselves. Coach Shields is proud of these men, yet prouder still to be the husband of 32 years to his wife, Becky, and father to his three children: Jennifer, 30; Bryan, 28; and Lauren, 25.

Coach Shields’ humility and thoughtful demeanor might just be the recipe for his unmatched success. “The kids are the most important thing – making them better players, better citizens; teaching them that there’s a right way and a wrong way to do things – that’s what’s important to me.”

The Viking team of 1991 was another highlight for Coach Shields.

It was this team that won a second district title, falling in the State Series Semi-Final to Frostproof High School after four overtime periods in front of a packed crowd in the Viking Stadium. When asked what made the Bishop Verot playoff teams of 1990 and 1991 special, Coach Shields replied that “it was the parent involvement, the Bishop Verot community support, and the support of (then) principal, Father Chris Hudgin.

Football is quite commonly the crown jewel of a high school athletic program and many a head coach wears that title like a lofty crown. The praise and adulation, the attention, and even the scorn can straighten a man’s spine, narrow his vision, and harden his heart.

Coach Bill Shields, however, isn’t that kind of man.

Humble and gracious, he’s far too focused on his players to notice any limelight. This is ironic considering that, in 1990, he was the first Lee county head coach to play for a State Championship when he led the Bishop Verot Vikings all the way to that final game in a contest versus Jacksonville Bolles. The Vikings lost 17-14, a score still not forgotten. Yet twenty four years later, he remains the only Lee county coach to lead a team as far as a high school football team can go. He’s a legend – our legend- who’s come back home.

Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Bill Shields attended high school at the Franklin Academy, where he played football and ran indoor track. He went on to graduate from Brockport State with a Bachelor’s of Science, and in 1977, he returned to the Franklin Academy where he began coaching high school football.

His teaching career led him to

He’s made that very point with our current Vikings. Their practices and workouts are much improved since

Coach Shields returned to Verot last spring. Just walk by the weight room or practice field and you can’t deny the sound of enthusiasm, lending sometimes to a roar. They’re buying into a new era of Bishop Verot Football.

As Coach Shields often says, “The good

Lord put our eyes in front of our heads, instead of the back, so we can see where we are going, not where we’ve been.”

Clearly, our Vikings are focused on the season ahead, and an exciting one it will be! BV

Bill Shields is the new head football coach and returns to Bishop Verot, 27 years after he began his head coaching career here. In 1991, he lead the Vikings to the State Championship game against Jacksonville Bolles. Bill and his wife Becky, who teaches Pre-K at Colonial Elem, have three grown children: Jennifer, Bryan, and Lauren and two grandchildren. They are very excited to be back in Fort Myers and look forward to being part of the Verot community. Bill will be teaching PE and Weight Training.

Mike Gill is a Bishop Verot graduate (‘68) and he is entering his 44th year as a teacher and coach at BV. Over the years he has served as an athletic director, head football coach, baseball coach and woodshop and drafting teacher. He has coached two generations of many families and enjoys coaching freshman football more than any other sport. Coach Gill’s wife Pat, teaches mathematics at St. Francis Xavier School in Fort Myers. They have two sons. Zachary is an attorney and Patrick is a doctor.

The 2014 Bishop Verot freshman football team will be exciting to watch according to Coach Gill.

Jeremy Ridgeo enters his second season as varsity volleyball coach at Bishop Verot after coaching volleyball at North Fort Myers High School for six seasons where he is the all-time leader in wins.

Coach Ridgeo has taken several I4U teams to the USAV National Championship tournament as coach and director of plyometric training and conditioning at USA South Volleyball. Originally from Syracuse, NY Ridgeo has a degree in English education from Ithaca College and has been a high school teacher for twelve years.

John Leonard has been around the sport of volleyball at various levels for 23 years. He recently left his position as head volleyball coach of Ave Maria University after three seasons at the helm. John has had coaching success in both the boys and girls game and has helped numerous teams earn national bids. As a player John has participated in everything from indoor to beach and grass tournaments, including a top 12 finish in the 1996 USAV Men’s Nationals in Dallas, Texas. John is IMPACT and CAP 1 certified and has worked for three seasons at USA South Volleyball.

Jim Quinn is entering his twelfth year as the head coach of the Bishop Verot swimming teams. The swimming team claimed regional championships in 2007 and 2008 on the girls’ side and 2008 on the boys’.

During his tenure, Stephanie Peacock (‘10) became the only three time state champion in school history, including being state champion in two different events (the 500m and 200m freestyle) in 2009. Also during his tenure, eight swimmers have earned athletic scholarships.

Andy Scott is entering his second year coaching the Bishop Verot Boys Golf Team.

He originally hails from Kentucky and has trained with world renown golf teachers such as Hank Haney, Bob Toski, Jim McLean, Phil Ritson, & Mac O’Grady. He has been recognized amongst his peers and students alike as one of the top golf instructors in South Florida. His positive, simplistic approach to golf lessons has helped many players improve their games. He has the great ability to work successfully with golfers of all ages, teaching golf lessons of all skill levels from beginner to current tour players, as is evident by his large base of golf students. Andy has a strong junior golf program which has produced 23 juniors to NCAA Collegiate Golf Scholarships.

After graduating high school in 1985, Ed Lockard moved to Fort Myers to attend Edison Junior College. He has been a member of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA) for 22 years. Ed has been the head golf professional at the Dunes Golf & Tennis Resort on Sanibel and at Grey Oaks Country Club in Naples, Florida.

In addition, he was the PGA director of golf at The Sanctuary Golf Club located on Sanibel for nine years and in November 2012, purchased Beachview Golf & Tennis Club (now known as Sanibel Island Golf Club) also located on Sanibel Island. He is in his second year of coaching girls’ varsity golf at Bishop Verot.

Heidi Nychyk was born and raised in Fort Myers. She has an extensive background in dance, has danced professionally, and taught dance for several years. Heidi has been a cheerleading coach at St. Michaels for the past four years. During her time there, her team consecutively won first place at CFLAA since first competing in 2011 and in 2014 her team won First Place National Champions at the 2014 Contest of Champions.

DRUMLINE LEADER GARTH STEGER

Following his masters degree, Garth Steger taught for 8 years in central Florida where he worked with multiple competitive marching percussion lines (drumlines and front ensembles) at various schools in Central Florida. Many of these groups have performed at FMBC State Championships and have been awarded first prize in their division. Garth Steger is excited to be at Bishop Verot working with the drumline and band and he looks forward to what this season will bring.

Vanessa Akin is a 2002 Bishop Verot graduate. She attended the University of Florida for undergraduate and graduate school earning a BA in Art History and a MS in Management. She will be teaching AP Comparative Government, AP US Government, and Law Studies.

Vanessa and her husband, Richard Akin, recently had their first baby girl, Mary Elizabeth, this spring.

Clay Atkins graduated from Bishop Verot in 2005 and studied literature at the University of Florida where he received a B.A. in English in 2009. His fiancé, Alyssa, is a teacher with the Lee County School District, and they always look forward to summers full of travel and-of course-professional development. His passions are reading, writing, and playing the guitar. As a returning graduate, he is honored to join his former teachers as a colleague in the English Department.

Mrs. Diedre Cook is in her 15th year of teaching. She moved here from Texas a year ago. Before joining us at Verot, she taught at Varsity Lakes Middle School. Mrs. Cook is a reader for AP European History and the SAT. She has taught AP European History, World History, and Geography. Mrs. Cook has 2 boys, Parker, 9, and Jeffrey, 13. Mrs. Cook has a Bachelor’s of History from Texas Tech University. She is looking forward to a great year at Bishop Verot and attending many events with her children supporting all her students.

Denny Denison

Eric Gou

Denny Denison was born and raised in Pittsburg. He was a math teacher at Bishop Verot High School in 1994, later moving into administration before eventually becoming the Dean of Students. After serving for nine years at Bishop Verot High School, he was appointed as an assistant principal at St. Ann Catholic School in Naples and then as assistant principal/athletic director at Dunbar High School in Fort Myers. Dr. Denison returned to Catholic Education when he was selected to serve as principal of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School, and later as principal of St. John Neumann Catholic High School, both in Naples. He has also served as the Interim Director of Education for the Diocese of Venice and as an adjunct professor of Education at Barry University and Ave Maria University. He graduated from Slippery Rock University with a B.S. in Education with an emphasis in Mathematics. He holds a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership and a Master’s in Education, both from Nova Southeastern University. Denny and his wife Jani have two children, a daughter Allison, a junior at St. John Neumann Catholic High School and a son Joshua, who attends Grove City College in Pennsylvania.

Xiaosong (Eric) Guo is a part-time Chinese Language teacher. He is originally from China, and he and his wife, Jade, currently live in Naples. He is in the doctoral program at Lynn University in Boca Raton, while Jade works in Naples as a marketing analysis specialist. Eric majored in Educational Leadership and Administration. Eric and his wife enjoy traveling and even visiting different cities in Florida such as Orlando, Tampa, Miami South Beach, and of course cruising around the Caribbean. In this coming academic year, he looks forward to becoming a qualified and welcomed teacher, and making many friends in Bishop Verot. He loves to teach and learn together with students.

Christy Greer is the new Communications and Event Coordinator at Bishop Verot. She is a Nashville,TN native.

She received her Bachelor’s in Business Administration in 2012, with a concentration in Marketing from The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). She moved to Florida a little over a year ago and recently got engaged to Bishop Verot graduate Andrew Keys (‘08), whom she met in Morgan ‘Marinell’ Engels college through mutual friends. Christy enjoys traveling, English fishing, reading, and SEC football. She looks forward to Morgan Engels maiden name is Marinell and she is a a great school year and meeting all the wonderful Verot Bishop Verot alumnus (‘03). Jim Orr graduated from BVHS in 2003 and then went on to complete his Bachelor’s in Business Administration from the University of Miami. His main areas of study were Management and Finance. He returned to the Fort Myers area and worked in the banking industry for the past 7 years. While working full-time, he attended FGCU and graduated with a Master’s in Business Administration.

Jim looks forward to teaching Algebra II, College Algebra, and the Personal & Family Finance courses this year. In his spare time, he enjoys watching sports, playing basketball or tennis, and relaxing at the beach.

Garth Steger will be working in the area of fine arts, specializing in music (band) and photography. He received his Bachelor’s in Music Performance (specialization in percussion) at the University of Central Florida and his Master’s of Arts (music performance specialization) at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In addition to teaching music, he is also a seasoned performer and clinician who has worked with the Orlando Philharmonic, Brevard Symphony Orchestra, Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra, Altoona Symphony Orchestra, Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Bach Festival Orchestra, and Disney’s Candlelight Orchestra. In addition, he enjoys running and traveling to new places, which he likes to Jill Rhone capture through his photography. Bill Shields is the new Head Football Coach and returns to Bishop Verot 27 years after he began his head coaching career here. In 1991, he led the Vikings to the State Championship game against Jacksonville Bolles. Bill and his wife Becky, who teaches Pre-K at Colonial Elem, have three grown children: Jennifer, Bryan, and Lauren and two grandchildren. They are very excited to be back in Fort Myers and look forward to being part of the Verot community. Bill will be teaching PE and Weight Training.

Dana White came to BVHS from Denver, where she taught biology, forensic science, and environmental science. She graduated from USF with a Degree in Physical Anthropology. Dana has two grown children, Daniel and Allison. She likes to bicycle, swim, kayak, and read. She is looking forward to learning about and participating in the traditions at Bishop Verot. BV

The main “reunion” event was held Saturday evening in the Wakefield Room, overlooking the ocean and a beautiful Captiva sunset. As Stefanie Beck (Dr. Hart) greeted everyone at the reception desk, Tom Nolan provided a fantastic slideshow. People were emailing old photos to him during the event as he posted them to the show (in real time).

In lieu of a DJ, we celebrate our 20th high school reunion had our own David Porter working the in style, making it a weekend event of iPod and sound system. After enjoying fun, sun and (of course) dancing. As a delicious buffet meal, we danced to dusk approached on Friday evening, the the likes of Boyz to Men, Run DMC obligatory story-telling of “the old days” and Guns ‘n Roses. Our very own Rick Hedge graced the microphone with renditions of some old school jams, which got the whole group up on their feet and laughing hysterically.

The highlight of the night was when my good buddy, Luke Harrington, got up to give a speech. Luke had asked me weeks before if he could address the class and, of course, I was thrilled that he wanted to do so. I was not prepared, however, for how powerful and sentimental his speech would be. He thanked the spouses and significant others, and made them all feel very welcome and included.

He talked about then and now, about our friendships, and about how lucky we are to have such a tight group with such good people. The speech was excellent, and who knew one of my best friends, whom I’ve known since 4th grade, could be such a profound public speaker? Luke had the Class of 1994 laughing so hard that our faces hurt. He received a welldeserved standing ovation from the crowd!

As the reunion came to an end in the Wakefield Room, the party poured over, once again, into the Crow’s Nest where we continued to dance the night away.

All in all, I couldn’t have asked for a better time with my fellow classmates.

We may be older and a bit wiser, but we’re clearly none the worse for wear.

I, for one, am looking forward to our 30th...and partying like its 1994! BV

Graduates Katie ‘Kerfoot’ Swosinski (‘05) and her husband Justin Swosinski (‘05), welcomed a beautiful baby boy named Logan Asher into their family on July 30th at 8 pounds, 20 inches long. They currently reside in Riverview, FL.

Katie June Driscoll (‘05) will marry Kacie ‘Zavada’ Antonelli (‘06) married Dr. Matthew Ryan Strand on October John Antonelli on June 21st, 2014 in 3rd, 2014. Katie and Matt live and Fort Myers, FL. will marry in Fort Collins, Colorado, where Katie is an occupational therapist and Matt is an educator.

Sarah Kerfoot was stationed with Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ-132 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WA and was deployed to Misawa, Japan, also visiting Republic of Korea and Guam for 6 months. She works as a Hospital Corpsman. She came back home safely from deployment on August 3rd, 2014. Thank you, Sarah, for serving our country!

ALUMNI SPORTS Class of ‘06

Reed Baker (‘06) graduated from FGCU and looked for professional opportunities around the world. He returned to the Fort Myers area in January of 2013 and began individually training local high school players. By word of mouth and an impressive resume, Baker found himself training nearly 80 kids every week. What started out as a way to make a few extra bucks on the side quickly became a full-time business for the 26 year old.

Class of ‘10

Hugo Delapenha Jr. (‘10), a redshirted Junior at the University of Miami, was named the Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year at the end of the season team award show. He played in six games on special teams last year.

He made the Miami debut against Savannah State, and saw action against Virginia Tech, Duke,Virginia and Pitt.
