Report to Our Community

Dear Friends,

"Transformational" is the word that comes to mind when I think about the past ten years of Imagine In the earliest days of Imagine, the concept of a free peer grief support center was an idea in the mind of Dr Gerald Glasser and Founding Executive Director, Mary Robinson Together, with Founding Board Chair Keith Hertell, this team built a vision in living rooms across our area, sharing the mission of ensuring that one day no child would grieve alone

What began with a team of twelve volunteers grew over the next ten years. The dedicated Board of Directors, volunteers, and staff built an organization that has served thousands of families during the most difficult times of their lives. In the four walls of our support group rooms, in a church in Westfield then at the Mountainside center, in schools and community-based organizations, families have found safety to express their stories of loss, share their grief, and begin to find hope and light again.

Imagine has consistently showed up for families in their moments of loss - when their grief is crippling Imagine has stayed with families, year after year, as their grief evolves from painful to eye-opening and excruciating to refocusing Imagine has walked alongside our children as they have grown from toddlers to teenagers to young adults, so that they know their grief does not have a timeline and that their stories deserve a witness

Each of our programs, grounded in our mission, have undergone their own transformation over these ten years - as Imagine has remained committed to improving the quality and quantity of our services On the following pages, you will see the stories of hope and transformation from our families, our volunteers, and our partners.

From everyone here at Imagine, thank you for allowing us to intervene for families and communities whose lives have been upended due to death. You give us the opportunity to create a world where children coping with loss can grow up emotionally healthy and are able to lead meaningful and productive lives - a world where we foster resiliency and emotional well-being for all those who grieve

With love and light, Executive Director Imagine, A Center for Coping with Loss

Celebrating 10 Years

How did we get here?

Many people and organizations contributed to the success, growth, and longevity of Imagine. It started with the vision and financial support from Dr Gerald Glasser under the direction of Mary Robinson, and continued thanks to the dedication of our staff, the willingness and desire to help from hundreds of volunteers, and the ongoing advocacy and support from the members of our Board of Directors

Thanks to the Board

Over the past ten years, Imagine’s Board of Directors has supported our mission and advocated for Imagine's growth and sustainability. We are grateful to all the members for their dedication t to pay special tribute to the five individuals who have served as Chair of

Dr Gerald Glasser was an Imagine visionary and, according to Mary Robinson, “the catalyst for creating a center of healing and hope for families coping with loss” The initial grant for startup funding for Imagine was provided through The Thomas Glasser Foundation, a philanthropic organization set up in memory of Dr Glasser’s son, Thomas Glasser, who was a victim of the 9/11 attacks Dr Glasser started the foundation in memory of Tom whose desire had been to support organizations serving children The Thomas Glasser Foundation continues to provide generous annual support to Imagine Imagine remains beyond grateful for Dr Glasser's vision and impact, as well as the continued generous support of the Glasser Foundation Imagine is honored to carry on Dr Glasser's legacy

Our Volunteers –an integral part of Imagine

Imagine volunteers – over 600 of them –are people who make things happen. They donate their time on our Nights of Support, as facilitators, greeters, set up and clean up crew and more They welcome our families and provide safe spaces, serve on committees, and are dedicated to fundraisers and awareness building activities such as tabling and serving as ambassadors Over the years, they have guided our children and families, stuffed envelopes, assembled training binders, and supported Greta’s Run and our annual Breakfast fundraiser, and more Without these 600+ individuals over these ten years, Imagine would not have been able to make the difference in our community that we have.

Being an Imagine volunteer has been the most fulfilling and worthwhile volunteer experience I’ve ever had.

Aimee, Imagine Facilitator for 6+ years

We celebrate three long-term facilitators:

Lisa D’Amico

Joanne Lukowiak

Kathy Sosnowski

We wouldn’t be where we are today without the selfless dedication of all the Imagine volunteers

“I have witnessed profound strength and resilience among families who arrived broken by loss Watching families find hope and light as they heal when given the opportunity to share their stories of life, loss, and love has been a truly inspiring experience”

Kathy,

Imagine Facilitator for 10+ years

“People outside of Imagine are always supportive when theyhear that I volunteer at a grief support center. But I know it can be a little confusingto hear that volunteering at a grief support center is the best night of my week. And that’s the magic That as a volunteer, the joyis not in what we bring, but what we take home from our participants.” Rob,

New Programs

Widows and Widowers Retreat

With the goal of providing care for the caregivers of Imagine, in March 2023, Imagine hosted it's 1st Widow and Widowers Retreat at Uplands Retreat Center in Walton NY During this two-day event, 11 Imagine participants participated in a weekend of yoga, hiking, grief support, healthy meals, and a time to relax and reflect to be the best they can be for themselves and for their children.

Free Camp Opportunities

Through the generosity of our supporters and the collaboration with our community partners, Imagine offered Free Camp Opportunities for our youngest participants The JCC of Central New Jersey opened 20 spots for one month of free summer camp and the JCC camp staff also received grief-informed training from Imagine’s Training & Education team prior to the start of camp. Farbrook Day Camp offered two scholarships to join their summer 2023 day camp. We are grateful to these community partners who support Imagine’s children

Butterfly Release at Fairview Cemetery

In October 2022, Imagine held a Butterfly Release Ceremony in partnership with Fairview Cemetery. At this event, Imagine families released butterflies in memory of a loved one who died. It was truly a beautiful and touching event So much so, that we held a second Butterfly Release Ceremony in May 2023

South Ward Promise Neighborhood

The South Ward Promise Neighborhood (SWPN), a partial U.S. Department of Education Promise Grant recipient, provides free support services to families in need They've partnered with Imagine to offer grief support to Newark families Justine Asante, SWPN’s Director of Partner Operations, values Imagine's help in guiding families through grief, offering both expression platforms and resilience-building tools. SWPN, now griefinformed through Imagine's programs, stands equipped to aid grieving families, striving to ensure no child grieves alone.

Mother's Day Celebration and Acknowledgement of Loss for Children whose Mothers are Deceased

Life Academy is one of the first Newark-area schools to participate in Imagine’s Grief-Informed School Initiative funded by a Health Care Foundation of NJ Grant Imagine has provided trainings to administration, staff, and parents As a result of this initiative, in 2023, Life Academy offered a Mother's Day Celebration for the students whose mothers have died, to create a safe space where they could receive support from their peers and their grief informed teachers and leaders.

Greta’s Run

The 10th annual Greta’s Run brought runners and walkers of all ages to Westfield and raised approximately $150,000 for Imagine.

More than 1,000 individuals registered for this official USATF 5K race. An additional 100 children, ages 10 and younger, participated in a 200-yard Kids Fun Run dash. The event concluded with a Memory Walk, during which more than 300 individuals walked a one-mile route that was lined with signs memorializing loved ones Greta’s Run was an act of honor, an act of mourning, and a remembrance for our families and our community

To the 100+ volunteers who made this event a success.

To our sponsors who underwrote the event so that every dollar raised goes toward providing free grief support for children and families.

Awards & Advocacy

Students Support Imagine

Imagine applied for and was selected by the leadership of the New Jersey Association of Student Councils (NJASC), student leaders from across the state representing their local school based associations. Imagine was honored to partner with them throughout the year, providing grief education to these student leaders and supporting their schools as they raised funds through various events in their local communities. Together, these student councils raised over $90,000 to support Imagine's peer to peer support groups for children and teens at our centers in Mountainside and Newark.
