45.5 kms away from Shimla, in the district of Himachal Pradesh. It is a district which comes in between Chandigarh and the capital city. Solan is known to be the largest Municipal Corporation of Himachal Pradesh. Being a desirable location for residing in a hilly area, Solan was once the state capital of the princely state Baghat. As a result, its history is deeply rooted with it. Having India’s one of the oldest breeries Solan is vastly popular for its mushroom and tomato cultivation, because of which the city is hailed as Mushroom City of India and The City of Red Gold.

Culture

named after the city’s local deity, Shoolini SDevi,olana was manifestation of Goddess Durga. When translated,

the meaning of the name comes out to be ‘the goddess wielding the spear.’ A fair is organized every year in the month of June, to celebrate the goddess and her fearlessness. It lasts for three days and takes place in the Thodo ground of the city. Other festivals too hold major significance to Solan’s culture. One of those is the Sair festival.

It originally comprises bull fights, which attract tourists from all over the world. These bulls are especially trained and reared for the event. Sair is also an occasion for people to shop for new things, be it clothes, utensils, or any other commodity. The city joins in such mega events with great zeal and fervor, taking their culture forward.

Salwar suit is a common ethnic wear in Solan for women.

But one can even spot them in ghaghra-choli, especially during festivities or big events. However, other pieces of clothing can also be seen as a part of their daily wardrobes. Along with the pretty ghaghra- cholis, the women adorn themselves with several ornaments namely a 9 Ladi Haar (nine- strand necklace), Chaak (gold ornament worn over the head), and a Gajru (heavy silver bracelets).

Pahadi Gidda or Paruhan is the traditional dance form performed by the native women of Solan.

The dance can be seen during wedding ceremonies and other auspicious occasions, or at dance festivals and competitions organized at different times of the year. Apart from Paruhan, Naati is common and can be performed by people of any age group. During the Shoolini fair, a special and traditional dance form Thoda is performed which is based on archery. The dancers use bows and arrows in their dance acts.

The habitual meal of Solan is like a typical north-Indian food plate consisting of lentils, vegetables, rice, and chapatis. SIRMAUR: A JOURNEY INTO THE DEPTHS OF NATURE

At the southernmost corner of Himachal Pradesh is the district of Sirmaur, blessed with the bounties of nature.

90% of its population spends life in small villages. Being on the outer Himalayan ranges, Sirmaur has many small and big towns, namely Nahan, Paonta Sahib, Rajgarh, and Shillai. Giri River flows through the district and is an important source of livelihood for the locals of Sirmaur due to the river’s fishery activities. The river divides the district in two equal parts- Giripar and Giriaar. The region is most famous for Churdhar mountain, which is one of Shivalik ranges. It is the highest peak of southern Himachal Pradesh. Churdhar or Churichandni, as it is most popularly known, translates to ‘Bangle of Snow’. It has got some finest picturesque views to look for.

The traditions of Sirmaur

In the early days of September, the district celebrates the holy Bawan Dwadashi Fair at Nahan. At this time 50 idols of local deities are brought on palanquins, carried by the devotees. These gods and goddesses gather at Nahan, from where they visit the Jagannath temple. There, these idols are immersed in a pool of holy water as a symbolic ritual of purification. It is said that by midnight, these Devis and Devtas return back to their temples.

The origin of the lake goes back to the age old tale when Maa Renuka fell from a height after having an argument with her husband. Wheat, Ogla, and Phafra are some notable dishes to try when in Kinnaur. For non-vegetarians, goat’s meat and ram’s meat is preferable the most. But Kinnaur visit is incomplete without the famous Cha, a salted tea, which is found almost anywhere in Kinnaur district. During the cold, chilly winter seasons which remain throughout the year, this tea rejuvenates one’s soul, allowing for a warming experience. Traditional outfits include a Pattoo which is worn by local women.

Reckongpeo, or Peo as it is better known by, houses the district headquarters of Kinnaur. At this point, one can have a great view of the Kinner Kailash peak, which is said to be the mythical abode of Lord Shiva. It is an eight day long trek to the mountain peak in the Himalayas.
