Aswe step into spring/summer 2025, Burnley is buzzing with momentum.
From world-first innovations to exciting new venues and inspiring community impact, this edition is packed with the stories that make our borough such a dynamic place to do business.
We’re proud to shine a spotlight on some incredible milestones this issue. AMS Neve gained international acclaim at the NAMM Show, where Burnley’s audio tech was demonstrated to none other than Stevie Wonder. It’s yet more proof that innovation born here can reach across the globe.
It’s been a big year for sustainability too. Recycle IT were crowned ‘Circular Company of the Year’, while Crow Wood Hotel unveiled one of the largest solar installations in the area, powering up not just their resort but our green ambitions as well.
Our tech scene is also making headlines. Burnley hosted its first AWS event, and with the launch of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) User Group Lancashire, our town is fast becoming a serious player in the North West’s digital transformation.
We also welcomed some fantastic new spaces to the town, like The Real Food Hall and Vault Cinemas, which have already become hotspots for locals and visitors alike. And speaking of transformation don’t miss our feature on Newtown Mill, part of the Sandygate regeneration project, which was recently shortlisted for a national placemaking award. You’ll see Newtown Mill, part of this project, on the cover of the magazine and you can read more about its transformation on page 48.
Our in-focus section looks at just some of the reasons why Burnley is a fantastic place to do business. If you have a business in the borough or you are looking to move here our business support team can offer support and advice. You can contact them by email business@burnley.gov.uk
It’s impossible to include every great story happening across our borough, so make sure you’re following Burnley.co.uk and our socials for the latest news, events, and opportunities. And if you have a story to share, please do get in touch. I’d love to hear it.
Enjoy the issue, and here’s to continuing to champion Burnley’s bright future.

on the balcony of Burnley Town Hall for speeches and interviews. The team was officially welcomed back to the Premier League by Burnley Council’s chief executive Lukman Patel and the Mayor of Burnley.
The celebration continued with an open-top bus parade, which travelled from the town hall to Turf Moor. The route took the players down Manchester Road, through St James’s Street and Yorkshire Street, before finishing at the stadium.
Lukman Patel said: “It’s fantastic to see Burnley FC back where they belong again, in the Premier League. Everyone at the club, and all of the supporters, have
done a brilliant job in getting us back into the best football league in the world.
“It’s often said that Burnley FC and Burnley as a town have a close connection like no other club in the country. The Clarets are such an important part of our community, whether you are a supporter or not.
“When the club is doing well, Burnley and the whole borough seems to be that much brighter and positive, and gives us all such a massive boost. Here’s to next season and all the challenges and opportunities ahead. Let’s look forward to bringing some of the biggest names in world football to Burnley once again.”
In celebration of International Women’s Day 2025 Burnley. co.uk joined forces with Porsche Centre Preston to recognise some of the incredible female talent we have in the borough. Rather than simply writing about some of our female leaders, we wanted to bring them together to enjoy quality time, where
they could expand their network, solidify working relationships and help to nurture the network of women who have paved the way for others and continue to do so.
Generously funded by Porsche Centre Preston, 12 incredible ladies met at Crow Wood Hotel to collect their Porsches, which in pairs, they had the pleasure of driving in and around the borough and through our beautiful countryside. After a driver swap in the grounds of
Gawthorpe Hall, it was back to Crow Wood, where a delicious lunch was enjoyed in Bertram’s.
Women especially can often leave little time for themselves, especially when juggling personal commitments too, so it was rewarding to see guests taking a few hours away from their workplaces to enjoy this experience with like-minded individuals.

Businesses and organisations across Burnley have voted in support of continuing the town’s Business Improvement District (BID) for another five-year term securing a second term, with 81 per cent of votes in favour.
Following a decisive vote of confidence from local businesses and organisations, the resounding backing will enable Burnley BID to generate over £1.5m of further investment into the town and carry on driving forward initiatives that enhance the town, support businesses and organisations and attract visitors until 2030.
From delivering and supporting townwide events including Burnley Live, Burnley Believes Christmas Light Switch-On, Burnley Vintage and Performance Car Show and monthly Artisan Markets, to the introduction of Town Wardens, a Burnley Business Crime Reduction Partnership and the Customer Service Awards, Burnley BID’s work is incredibly varied, but with one ultimate goal – to build a stronger more resilient town by working collectively as one.
The ballot saw a strong turnout, with a clear majority voting in favour of continuing the BID for a second term. This result reflects the tangible impact the BID has had on the local economy and the confidence that businesses and organisations have in its ongoing efforts.
Voting was also expanded to incorporate additional businesses, organisations and expanding the BID’s footprint in the town.
With a fresh five-year term secured, the scheme will now focus on delivering
an ambitious programme of projects tailored to the needs of businesses and organisations within the BID. Plans include:
• Greater investment into high quality events and festivals in the town including the Christmas Lights SwitchOn, Burnley Live and Burnley Vintage and Performance Car Show.
• Enhancing marketing and promotional activities to showcase Burnley as a must-visit destination through its Discover Burnley brand.
• Expanding safety and security measures to ensure a safe environment for businesses, organisations, shoppers, and visitors.
• Initiatives to review and improve the evening economy and strengthen the reputation of the sector.
• Supporting local businesses with training and networking opportunities.
• Investing in public realm improvements including landscaping and planting schemes to create an inviting atmosphere.
In addition, Groundwork Cheshire, Lancashire, and Merseyside (CLM) has been appointed as the management organisation (BID body) by the board. As a not-for profit registered charity, Groundwork CLM fulfils its role as an accountable body by managing the BID’s income, overseeing the delivery of the business plan, and employing the staff who deliver the five year business plan. Groundwork CLM have operated specialist Business Improvement District
management services since 2005 and have managed the Burnley BID since 2020.
Laurence O’Connor, Burnley BID chair and owner of Financial Affairs said: “That such a large majority of businesses and organisations voted for the new term which is a fantastic result and will allow us to continue our transformative work for another five years. Since its establishment, Burnley BID has played a crucial role in fostering economic growth, improving security, and boosting the town’s reputation as a vibrant destination for shopping, dining, and leisure. From street safety initiatives to promotional campaigns, the scheme has worked tirelessly to create a more attractive and prosperous environment for businesses, organisations and the community.”
Laura Diffey, Burnley BID project manager said: “Our success is down to the collective effort of the business community. By working together, we can continue to create opportunities, overcome challenges, and ensure Burnley remains a thriving hub for commerce and culture.”
BIDs are defined geographical areas where businesses and organisations work together and invest in agreed services, projects and special events and are financed by a levy made on the basis of rateable value. They operate in most cities and towns across the UK. More information can be found at burnleybid.co.uk
After a fast-paced start to 2025, Burnleybased entrepreneur Jack Bannister, managing director of Rapid IT, travelled to Bijilo in The Gambia on a mission that combined charity, sustainability and long-term impact. His aim was to explore how his business values and personal commitment to community could come together to create lasting change in one of West Africa’s most vibrant regions.
This wasn’t Jack’s first visit to The Gambia. In 2023, he travelled there as both a private individual and a trustee of the charity Furniture for Education Worldwide (FEW). Over the years, Rapid IT has supported FEW by donating laptops, computers and furniture collected from schools and business customers across the UK.
The focus of the visit was Bijilo Nursery School. Jack met with the school’s headteacher, Babacour, and held discussions with the Village Development Committee to share a proposal for a solar-powered computer room and recycling hub. The concept would be open to teachers and learners across The Gambia, providing access to digital skills while generating income to support the running of the school. In return, the nursery would provide
land and space for the facility, forming a model for community-led sustainability.
As part of his visit, Jack donated two laptops and two mobile phones, including one to Babacour’s son to support his studies as he moves into college. He also met with Jim Bell from Unison, who is currently fundraising for two new school buildings in Bijilo.
Back home in Burnley, Rapid IT operates using solar panels and battery storage, with sustainability deeply embedded into its business model. Jack’s hope is to replicate this approach in The Gambia, delivering off-grid digital infrastructure that is resilient and environmentally conscious.
For Jack, the visit reinforced the belief that The Gambia holds real potential. Beyond donations, he sees an opportunity to establish a remote IT support team, creating jobs, training opportunities and deeper partnerships that align with the values of Rapid IT.
The trip also carried personal meaning. Jack ensured he returned home in time for the celebration of life for his late grandmother, who had passed away shortly before he left. A lifelong supporter of causes like Pendleside Hospice, she
inspired Jack’s dedication to giving back. “She would have wanted me to go,” he said. “She believed in supporting others.” WANT TO SUPPORT THE PROJECT?
Jack and the team at Rapid IT are now working to bring this vision to life. From building a solar-powered computer education hub to expanding digital access in The Gambia, they are inviting others to get involved. To learn more or contribute, visit www.rapidit.co.uk/gambia
Burnley-based Loxta, a family-owned leader in premium door hardware manufacturing, has announced the launch of its innovative STEALTH Commander door handle range. This cutting-edge product sets a new standard for residential and commercial security solutions across the UK, blending style, versatility, and top-tier protection.
The STEALTH Commander marks a significant leap forward in door hardware innovation. As the UK’s first easily retrofittable high-security door handle, it’s only the second product to earn the prestigious Sold Secure Silver certification under the rigorous SS301 attack test. This surpasses the widely recognised 2* security rating (equivalent to Sold Secure Bronze), offering businesses
and homeowners unmatched peace of mind. Adding to its credentials, the STEALTH Commander has also achieved Secured by Design status, meeting the strict standards set by UK police for crime prevention.
Shaun Singh, managing director at Loxta, explains: “The STEALTH Commander isn’t just another security product - it’s a revolutionary approach to door security for both new builds and existing properties. With burglars using increasingly sophisticated methods, our Burnley company designed a solution that excels in security, style, and adaptability.”
What makes the STEALTH Commander door handle stand out is its ability to address diverse security challenges. Unlike traditional high-security door handles that demand
specific door preparations, this range offers multiple plate formats compatible with various locking systems - multipoint locks, DIN locks, sash locks, and even patio door systems. This versatility makes it a go-to choice for fabricators, locksmiths, and ironmongers in Burnley and beyond.
A standout feature is the extra-long plate version with 240mm fixing centres, allowing secure installation above and below the lock case – a first for security door handles in the UK. With three backplate options and six handle variations, the STEALTH Commander adapts to a wide range of security needs, ensuring properties stay protected without compromise.

Moorhouse’s Brewery, a name synonymous with Burnley since 1865, is embracing a new era of transformation as it adapts to the challenges of the modern beer industry. Long-respected for its brewing heritage and consistent excellence, Moorhouse’s has used the past year as a period of reflection, reinvention, and renewed ambition - a time to reset, refocus, and look forward.
Founded in a row of terraced houses on Moorhouse Street, and later relocating to a purpose-built facility on the same site in 2011, Moorhouse’s has always built its reputation on quality.
“Quality means doing it when no-one is looking,” the team says - a motto that runs through every part of the business, from the brewers and packagers to the drivers delivering the final product.
For Moorhouse’s, it’s about perfection from grain to glass.
Their beers have earned accolades both nationally and internationally, many recognised repeatedly over the years. “It’s about consistency and trust,” they say - vital in a fiercely competitive market filled with brilliant brewers vying for attention both at the bar and on the shelves.
But even a legacy brand must evolve. In a significant step towards broadening its reach and capabilities, Moorhouse’s recently acquired Manchester’s Squawk Brewing Co., a craft favourite known for its bold and uncompromising beers.
Squawk’s founder, Oliver Turton, who had been facing challenges including a steep rent hike and the need for further investment, is now collaborating closely with the Moorhouse’s team.
“Quality means doing it when noone is looking”
“Having put so much into Squawk, it’s been great to work with the Moorhouse’s team who want to carry on what I’ve been creating over the last 10 years,” said Oliver. “Seeing their new 25HL brewing kit and hearing that they have hired a new lead brewer too, shows to me these guys are serious about my beer.”
New lead brewer, Tom Plant added: “We’re very proud to be continuing the Squawk legacy, Oliver built a wonderful brewery and brand that we can’t wait to further and honour. As well as continuing to brew Squawk classics like Mallard and Pavo, we will be crafting a new generation of Squawk beers that uphold the original ethos Oliver set out that made Squawk so wonderful from the get go.
This new equipment isn’t just about capacity - it opens the door to creativity. With the ability to brew smaller batches, Moorhouse’s now has the freedom to explore experimental and more playful, adventurous flavours of cask ale. It also brings cost-saving benefits, reducing the energy demands of powering larger brewing
vessels. Additionally, the brewery will soon introduce its own in-house canning line, giving them greater control and efficiency across the production process.
While the installation of new equipment required a temporary pause on their ever-popular brewery tours, these are set to return with a fresh approachpart of a broader reimagining of what Moorhouse’s offers the local community.
This spirit of reinvention is also reflected in a rebrand of their seasonal ale range, aligning its visual identity with the core line-up. “It’s important to us that people know they’re part of the same family,” said Alisha Libberton marketing manager at Moorhouses. “It helps customers when choosing ales at the pump.” In a market where pub operators face pressure from rising costs, this brand clarity and support can go a long way. Moorhouse’s also actively helps promote its stockists - including Burnley favourites like The Bridge Bier Huis - through social media, connecting drinkers directly to venues.
Alongside this commercial innovation is a deepening of Moorhouse’s social mission. The brewery has strengthened ties with Burnleybased mental health organisation Six Connections, by last year launching a powerful collaboration with the creation of Ask Twice, a modern bitter crafted to encourage open conversations about mental health. The initiative honours lives lost and champions everyday, preventative dialogue around wellbeing.
“Ask Twice is more than just a beer,” explained Dave Scholes, founder of Six Connections. “It’s a conversation starter, encouraging people to talk about how they are feeling - in the good times as well as the not so good. Encouraging supportive chat in normal places like the pub allows everyone to feel more comfortable and support their mates. These conversations will save lives.”
Each pump clip, bottle, and beer mat for Ask Twice featured a QR code linking drinkers to support and advice via the Six Connections platform. The beer featured at major events like the Wetherspoons Spring Beer Festival and the Wigan and Lancaster Beer Festivals, with contributions from every sale going directly to Six Connections to continue their vital work.
Whether it’s through embracing new brewing techniques, supporting local pubs, or leading meaningful social initiatives, Moorhouse’s Brewery continues to evolve - without ever losing sight of its core values. As they proudly say: “Brewing perfection since 1865” - and that perfection now looks more progressive, more inclusive, and more exciting than ever.”
“ BREWING PERFECTION SINCE 1865 ” - and that perfection now looks more progressive, more inclusive, and more exciting than ever.
There’s a new leisure and hospitality venue in Burnley town centre and it’s not messing about when it comes to bringing a fresh new offering. Real Food Hall and Vault Cinemas opened in December 2024, and it’s already quickly made its mark. The new leisure offerings are located in the former Barclays Bank on Red Lion Street, which also used to be The Savoy Cinema in 1918. It is this rich history of the huge premises that led to the inspiration of having a cosy new cinema and 1920s decor-themed food hall (with more to follow – more on that later).
The premises then housed various retailers until its last occupier, Select. After spending a long time vacant, the building was purchased and transformed into the dynamic new venue, with repeated nods to its historic past.
Arguably, Vault Cinemas is the showstopper. Hidden behind a glittering gold door with a bank vault on, the cinema oozes luxury – although we were surprised at how accessible this opulent experience is. As you push open the door, you will immediately be taken aback by the grand chandelier that has been relocated from the ballroom of the former Keirby Hotel.
When Burnley Lifestyle Magazine was invited to take a tour, we were taken aback by just how luxurious the setting was, but also how reasonable the prices are. You can also choose from a huge library of 450 films, so you can tailor the cinema experience to exactly what you want.
Mia Goddard, general manager of Real Food Hall and Vault Cinemas, explained the idea behind the concept: “Our cinema offering is truly one of the standout features
of this space. The cinema rooms are housed in the former vaults of a 1960s bank, which gives the whole experience an incredibly intimate and luxurious feel. We have two large Vault Cinema rooms -one seating 18 guests and the other seating eight - both of which are perfect for enjoying the latest releases in our public screening rooms.
“Additionally, we have a five-seater auditorium and four two-seater private screening rooms, providing a variety of options for a personalised and unique movie night. All cinema tickets include bottomless pick and mix, popcorn, and soft drinks, which really sets us apart from traditional cinemas. It’s all about offering our guests comfort, privacy, and a touch of indulgence. We’re thrilled to bring this building back to its cinematic roots. “
You can also enjoy table service and order food and drinks from the food hall upstairs.
Above the cinema lies Real Food Hall. The menu is huge and covers an array of tastes, from pizzas and loaded fries to burgers and comfort meals like pies. There’s also a huge variety of ice creams from local farm Mrs Dowsons, as well as other sweet treats such as waffles.
In fact, the menu is so vast that when we came for a team lunch, our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs and we filled our table with dishes to share.
Mia said: “The food offering is diverse, with something to suit everyone. We have a fantastic range of options, from woodfired pizza to street food classics like smash burgers, loaded fries, wings, and more. Our traditional kitchen is where you’ll find comfort food like our famous pies and
Yorkshire pudding wraps, which are already becoming a favourite among our guests.
The venue is open seven days a week, from 11am to late, although there are plans to open even earlier. For those of you who might want to enjoy the food but from the comfort of your home, you can order on Just Eat and Deliveroo. Another USP if Real Food Hall and Vault Cinemas is they can be hired for private events.
“Whether you’re hosting a corporate event, birthday party, or a special celebration, we can accommodate your needs. We offer tailored packages, including private screenings in the cinema rooms and custom food offerings from our chefs. It’s the perfect venue for a memorable, exclusive experience,” Mia stated.
If having a food hall and cinema isn’t enough, the team also have another big plan up their sleeves – boutique accommodation.
Mia revealed: “We have plans to offer luxurious boutiquestyle accommodation through our Above Hotels service, which includes nine luxury hotel rooms. These rooms are designed with elegance and comfort in mind, featuring private en-suites, underfloor heating, projector screens, king-sized beds, and fully stocked mini-fridges. Guests can also enjoy dining in the Real Food Hall, making it a complete VIP experience. It’s the perfect place for anyone seeking a truly special stay in Burnley.”
Burnley Lifestyle Magazine has seen the planned interiors of the accommodation, and they have the vibe of a boutique hotel you’d find somewhere like Manchester.
It’s certainly a huge offering to bring to market and the hospitality sector is notoriously a tricky one to navigate at the moment – how has business been so far?
“It’s been incredibly busy since opening! We’ve been thrilled with the response from both the local community and visitors from further afield. People have been really excited to have something like this in Burnley, and we’re only just getting started. We’re looking forward to more events, entertainment, and themed nights in the coming months to keep that energy going.
“The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! People love the unique concept, the quality of the food, and the luxurious feel of the cinema rooms. Many have told us they feel like they’re in a much bigger city when they walk through the doors, which is exactly the type of experience we were aiming for.
“We believe we’ve really found a gap in the market, which adds to our success so far. The idea behind creating the food hall and cinema was to offer something truly special to Burnley, combining entertainment, dining, and luxury in one space. We saw a clear gap in the market for a premium, multi-use venue that could cater to both locals and visitors. There wasn’t a destination that offered this kind of elevated experience in the area, so we set out to create a place that would fill that need, providing something unique and exciting for the community.”
We can’t wait to see the accommodation go live and must admit, we’ve already enjoyed several visits to the food hall to work our way through the menu…
By choosing to dine at one of our venues, you can enjoy a delicious meal in the knowledge that any profits will go directly towards supporting the people of Burnley.

For nearly 40 years, New Era Enterprises has stood as a pillar of support in Burnley, responding to the evolving needs of the community with compassion, innovation, and action. From its early days as a community training provider to its current role delivering holistic support in health, wellbeing, and employment support, New Era has always had one goal at its core: to make Burnley a better place for everyone.
Now, as the organisation comes full circle - reinvigorating its training arm with a more diverse range of regulated courses - it’s inviting Burnley businesses to become part of that mission. By booking training through New Era, companies not only upskill their teams with high-quality, affordable courses, but they also help fund vital community projects that improve lives across the borough.
Founded in 1986, New Era Enterprises began life as a community co-operative seeking to encourage economic development through support, consultancy, education and training. Over the decades, the notfor-profit has grown and diversified, responding to gaps in statutory services and the specific challenges facing Burnley residents. In the late ‘90s, it launched the New Era Childcare Agency with European funding to support local creches and childminders. By 2004, the organisation became an accredited training provider, offering qualifications in childcare, literacy, and numeracy. That same year, it opened an Ofstedregistered nursery to expand its early years provision.
Fast forward to 2008, and New Era’s impact deepened again. With lottery funding, it launched the New Beginnings Project to support people experiencing homelessness and vulnerability. The organisation further expanded in 2013, establishing a specialist training hub focused on first aid - initially serving the childcare sector, but now recognised as a centre of excellence across the North West.
The pandemic in 2020 saw New Era mobilise rapidly to support families during lockdown, providing everything from food parcels and toys to virtual coffee afternoons and pop-up support in parks. And in 2024, the organisation proudly moved into its new premises - The Annexe - signalling a new chapter in its journey.
Wendy Woodfine, chief executive of New Era, explains why the organisation is doubling down on its training offer:
“The business started out as a community training provider, so it’s an area we have a lot of experience in, and we pride ourselves on providing top-notch training at reasonable prices. Where we differ from other providers is that the money our clients spend on
training is put directly back into community projects.”
These aren’t just feel-good words. As a notfor-profit, New Era ensures every pound spent on training has a tangible impact. Revenue from training helps fund emotional health and wellbeing services, support for children and families, community events, employment advice, and much more.
In 2025, the organisation secured further funding from the National Lottery Community Fund for its flagship Annexe Project, which provides emotional health and wellbeing support to children, young people, and their families across Burnley and surrounding areas. The new funding is a testament to the trust and reputation New Era has built over four decades.
New Era’s training programmes are designed with businesses in mind. Whether it’s first aid, health and safety, safeguarding, or professional development, the courses are regulated, up-to-date, and delivered by qualified, experienced trainers.
For Burnley businesses, there’s a twofold benefit to booking with New Era:
1. Practical impact - Staff receive highquality training that meets legal and regulatory requirements, boosting workplace safety and performance.
2. Social impact - Training fees help fund community programmes that directly support Burnley residents - from mental health services for young people to family support and skills training for jobseekers.
Wendy puts it simply: “When local businesses choose us for their training, they’re not just investing in their teams - they’re investing in Burnley. It’s a win-win.”
25 years after establishing Crow Wood Leisure Andrew Brown is stepping down from his managing director role, handing over the reins to son Oliver. We caught up with Oliver to find out what this move means to him and how he sees Crow Wood developing.
Congratulations on your new role, Oliver. What does it mean to you personally to take over as MD of a business your father built?
I am not a huge fan of titles, but I accept the need for formal hierarchy. The transition has been planned for a long time, so I don’t think much will change immediately.
Can you share a bit about your journey within the company up to this point? Was stepping into this role always part of the plan?
In all honesty, dad took a bit of a flyer on me when he brought me in to establish Soccer Burnley. Originally, I think there was an idea of cutting my teeth on the Soccer Burnley project before transitioning over to the health club. That all happened much sooner than anticipated, as dad 's righthand man and fellow director retired. Looking back, it was perfect but felt like a big step up. I don’t think either of us were thinking too far ahead as I was so green - pardon the pun.
What’s the best piece of advice your father has given you about running the business?
I have learned a lot during my time with him. Continuous investment across the site has always been important to us, and I intend to maintain that and not shy away from investment in the future.
How have you prepared for the responsibility of taking the reins? Some years ago, I completed an MBA, which was always with the future in mind.
What are your immediate priorities as you settle into the MD role?
We have a year of consolidation ahead of us, with many opportunities to maximise. Maintaining a very strong, motivated team across all departments is a priority.
Do you have a particular vision or direction you’re hoping to take the resort in over the next five years?
Five years is a long time. We have not yet had a calendar year of operating our newest investments, so our priority is growing our brand and geographical pull. How would you describe your leadership style, and how do you think it differs from your father’s?
He is definitely seen as more fun than me! I guess my formal business education plays a part in that. I would like to think that all of our stakeholders would say we are both approachable and friendly.
What’s one thing you’re excited to change - or one tradition you’re keen to preserve?
There’s so much we do well here at Crow Wood that I’d like to maintain. I introduced a monthly birthday lunch for all employees
to attend. It’s been a great way to get people across different departments to meet informally and catch up.
Crow Wood has become a standout destination in the North. What do you think sets it apart from other luxury hotels and spas?
It’s hard to say, as I do not spend time looking at competitors. Usually, the scale of the facilities surprises guests who have not been before, and we often receive compliments regarding the staff right across the resort, which is always pleasing to read and hear.
Crow Wood has seen some major developments recently, is there a part of these that you are most proud of?
The hotel was a big project to complete, and given Covid happened so close to that business opening, it was a tough year. It has been pleasing to establish that business and see it mature. I am proud of all of our facilities, and I think they are as good as you will find nationally.
What does legacy mean to you, and how do you want to shape your own within the family business?
I'm happy for Crow Wood to be dad’s story, and I'll work on the business to the best of my ability to preserve and hopefully develop his legacy.
Where do you see Crow Wood in ten - years and what role do you see yourself playing in that vision?
In 10 years, my eldest daughter will become an adult – best not to think too far ahead!
What message would you give to loyal guests and the Crow Wood team as you begin this new chapter? There are many people who make Crow Wood what it is. A genuine thanks to all of our stakeholders who play their part in delivering our services and maintaining our facilities. We have an exciting and growing future, and I am excited for you all to be a part of that.
There’s a family business in Burnley that has seen an impressive trajectory of success, in a sector that you might at first think doesn’t sound like one to shout about.
Atlas Environmental Services are a true family affair, with a father and son team at the helm. The company provides pest prevention, management and bird control services, but are proud that they offer a bespoke and friendly service that has seen a rapid growth in clients.
InBusinessBurnley caught up with father Phil, son Jacob and Jacob’s wife Rebecca (she runs a tight ship when it come to admin and accounts!). They also have two members of staff, with more recruitment in the pipeline.
Phil explained that he was born in Nelson, but his family relocated to London when he was a child. He brought Jacob and Jacob’s sister Lucy up as Burnley FC fans, much to the then-annoyance of a young Jacob, who was surrounded by schoolfriends who supported teams such as Chelsea!
However, Phil was adamant that his children would
be Clarets and he took them across the country to watch matches, visiting family in Burnley twice a year, coinciding the trips with Burnley FC home games.
“I was working in Gatwick when I became very unwell with a pulmonary embolism. It was a horrible time, as I was also going through a separation, and I had full custody of the children. Jacob was only ten but was visiting me in hospital every day, my father and sister were still living up north, so I had little support.
“I decided to move the family to Burnley so we could have my family around us and within three months I had made a complete recovery!” Phil told us.
He ended up moving into pest control, a career he had for 15 years. With one eye on retirement and the children now adults and making a life for themselves, it was Jacob who suggested the two go it alone in the world of pest control.

NEWTOWN MILL, a cornerstone in the ambitious Sandygate regeneration project, is no ordinary restoration. It’s a reimagining of place, purpose, and potential. And for Burnley Council, it’s been over a decade in the making.
The journey began over ten years ago when Burnley Council took the bold decision to purchase a group of dilapidated heritage assets around the Sandygate area. “We did question our sanity,” Kate Ingram, director of economy and development, joked, “but we understood the value of these assets - not just in bricks and mortar, but in identity and legacy.”
These buildings are more than relics; they are living artefacts of the town’s cultural and architectural narrative. Their preservation was never about nostalgia alone - it was about creating a platform for economic growth, environmental responsibility, and civic pride.
The overarching goal, shaped in collaboration with a board chaired by heritage champion Sir Neil Cossons, was clear:
“Create a dynamic mixed-use area that capitalises on Burnley’s unique heritage and canal side setting, enriched by the best in contemporary design.”
This vision came with design principles that still underpin every decision:
• Create a distinct sense of place
• Blend contemporary, high-quality design with historic character
• Build robust, functional public spaces
• Resolve the isolation and challenging topography of the site
Delivering such a bold transformation required more than ambition - it demanded partnership. In 2012, the council entered a joint venture with Barnfield Investment Properties, an East Lancashire-based developer known for its regeneration expertise.
“Barnfield shared our long-term vision
and brought essential development and construction capabilities to the table,” Kate explained. “Newtown Mill is a testament to that collaborative approach.”
Interestingly, Newtown Mill wasn’t part of the original Sandygate masterplan. It was in relatively good condition and in use at the time. But as the surrounding area evolved, the building’s strategic importance became increasingly clear. Its location offered a natural link between Sandygate and Burnley town centre - an opportunity too valuable to ignore. It also aligned perfectly with the growing presence of UCLan (University of Central Lancashire), bookending the campus with two iconic industrial buildings.
Despite its name, Newtown Mill was never a textile mill. It was originally Burnley Iron Works, later Burnley Steel Works, and during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it played a pivotal role in fuelling Britain’s industrial expansion.
Among its most famous products was the Burnley Mill Engine - a 700-brake horsepower steam engine built in 1903 and installed at Harle Syke Mill. There, it powered more than 1,700 looms until its decommissioning in 1970. The engine now resides in the Science Museum in London as the centrepiece of its Energy Halll - an enduring symbol of Burnley’s engineering prowess.
In recent decades, the building served more modest roles, including as home to local engineering firms, sandblasting operations, and even Grapevine Gym.
Restoring Newtown Mill was as technically challenging as it was ambitious. Years of varied usage had left their markcontamination, structural wear, and a patchwork of outdated modifications.
“As with any refurbishment project, challenges were part and parcel,” said Tim Webber, Barnfield’s managing director.
“There were parts of the building that were inaccessible, and we really didn’t know what we were working with.”
Once the site was stripped out, further complications emerged. Many of the original roof trusses were found to be unusable, prompting the decision to install an internal steel frame. Not only did this add structural stability to crumbling external walls, but it also allowed for the integration of a large lecture theatre within the core of the building, featuring approximately 135 tonnes of pre-cast concrete auditorium seating.
“This element required meticulous planning. The steel and concrete had to be installed in tandem to ensure a precise fit - any delay or misalignment would’ve been disastrous,” Tim added.
Additional discoveries included historic staircases leading to long-forgotten underground chambers, likely once used for mill storage. The team worked closely with specialist archeologists to document any artefacts or noteworthy findings during excavation.
Externally, major structural work was required as well. The rear of the building had become partially submerged over the years, so a 162-metre-long retaining wall - comprising nearly 300 concrete blocks - was constructed to expose the rear of the lower ground floor and to stabilise the site. Its location at a major road junction in the town centre made logistics a constant challenge, requiring strict control of materials and site access.
Despite the complexity, the team remained committed to delivering a building that honoured its industrial past while offering modern functionality.
Windows and doors, many of which were missing at ground level, were painstakingly recreated. Working with specialist suppliers, the team replicated the original 4x6 pane design using energy-efficient modern materials. A six-month masonry project followed to create new openings that matched the heritage look, with sandblasted reveals giving an authentically distressed appearance.
One of the most striking features is the Queen’s Lancashire Way entrance vestibule, which offers real ‘wow’ factor. Clad in aluminium and powder-coated to mimic the appearance of Corten steel, the structure was crafted off-site using a custom-made template. The cladding, affixed with negative shadow gaps, appears to float - adding a bold, modern contrast to the industrial brickwork.
The standing seam roof echoes materials used across Sandygate Square’s newer developments, while a Corten steel crown now caps the building’s original chimney - subtly blending past and present.
Internally, two ground levels are connected via a large social space anchored by a dramatic staircase. Natural light, previously lacking on the lower levels, is now brought in through newly installed windows - enhancing comfort and visibility throughout the space.
Today, Newtown Mill is more than a building. It’s a powerful symbol of Burnley’s transformation - from a hub of coal and cotton to a centre of learning, culture, and innovation. For the town, it’s a bridge between generations, blending the pride of the past with the promise of the future.
And just like the great engines it once produced, Newtown Mill is once again powering progress - this time through education, regeneration, and imagination.
Dovestone Gardens, Burnley’s flagship extra care facility on Briercliffe Road, welcomed its very first residents this Spring.
Developed by Calico Homes with funding from Homes England, Dovestone Gardens is a recognisable new addition to the Burnley skyline and brings together housing and health in a much-needed accommodation for the town’s ageing population.
Located next door to Burnley General Hospital, the modern 93-apartment complex offers a range of modern one and two-bedroom flats, a community hub with bistro, communal meeting spaces and community gardens.
The first building of its kind for Burnley, it has been specially designed to support over-55s with care needs to continue living independently.
The £20 million development has completely transformed the previously derelict land at the hospital site and is now set to transform the lives of the people who live, meet and work there.
For Calico, this kind of investment in the wellbeing of the community has been very much driven by what the community really needs.
Laura Hodgkinson, Housing with Care manager for Dovestone Gardens said: “We’re really pleased with the engagement we’ve had from the community throughout the development of Dovestone Gardens.
“Everyone has recognised how much the local area needs more quality homes for people who have extra support needs, and they have really informed the way we work.
“From the design of the building and apartments to the way care services will be delivered, our customers and the wider community have played an active role in making sure it’s right for them.”
At the heart of the vibrant community hub is on-site bistro, Dempsey’s. Open to both residents and the public, the eatery offers a healthy menu and a stylish sitting space, specialising in family-inspired dishes everyone loves.
Councillor Lubna Khan, Burnley Council Executive Member for Growth & Development, said: “Dovestone Gardens is a great example of how investment in housing can deliver broader economic and social benefits for Burnley.
“This project has also driven job creation and supported apprenticeships. It reflects our commitment to sustainable development and ensuring that growth in Burnley benefits both residents and the wider community.”
Oliver Ryan MP, who was impressed by the build quality, innovative security methods and sheer scale of the construction during a tour in December 2024, said: “It’s a big development for this part of town – and it’s important to Burnley because we have a big extra care need in our community.” He continued: “Dovestone Gardens is going to provide much needed beds and support for people who need that extra care.”
The project has been developed by social value construction company Ring Stones, also part of The Calico Group.
Ring Stones is continuing to have a huge impact in the community by reinvesting its surpluses into Calico’s charitable work, prioritising local supply chains, working towards sustainable practices, and developing it’s Burnley-based workforce.
The build at Dovestone Gardens provided a great opportunity for many local apprentices who have gained their skills and qualifications, as well as providing roles for tradespeople who live locally, and worked with schools and colleges to promote careers in the industry.
In fact, four out of five employees from Ring Stones are from the Burnley area and more than 25 percent of Ring Stones’ trades workforce is now made up of apprentices. The business has also made a longstanding commitment to investing in a diverse and inclusive team
James Macaree, managing director of Ring Stones,
said: “We are really proud of the work we have done; it’s been brilliant to see the benefits of Dovestone Gardens across the whole town in providing work opportunities, not only for young people, but for many local people in the area including local suppliers.”
During the build, Ring Stones were awarded The Bricks Site Recognition Award by LABC Warranty for its standards of workmanship and overall management of Dovestone Gardens, including health and safety matters and general tidiness.
Bricks Site Recognition Award winners are chosen every month and are then further shortlisted at the end of the year, where the best of those sites is rewarded with The Bricks development of the year trophy, one of the construction industry’s most prestigious awards given to construction sites from England and Wales.
Burnley’s first extra care scheme has also been rated excellent by an independent assessor, the Considerate Constructors Scheme, which is aimed at raising standards within the construction industry.
Achieving a 42 out of 45, the rating achieved through the work being carried out on Dovestone Gardens is Ring Stones’ highest rating to date. The hard work that has been carried out in the community from Ring Stones including visits to local schools in the local area was recognised as part of the rating.
Chief executive of The Calico Group, Anthony Duerden, concluded: “Dovestone Gardens is a major milestone in our journey as a group and in partnership, and a great example of what we can do when we bring together all the different work we do locally, in homes, construction, care and employment, for the benefit of community. Looking forward, we know that our customers and partnerships will continue to be the key
to our future business and the difference we make.”

What “Fagan & Whalley are a 6th generation, private organisation with a progressive outlook focused on our employees and clients. We are a quality driven business-to-business (B2B) service provider who deliver dynamic, sustainable and integrated logistics solutions.
Almost 100 years ago founders started the business with a horse and cart, right here in Burnley. F&W then was moving coal from the railhead to homes in the village of Hapton and as business began to pick up, a vehicle was purchased to create efficiencies and the rest is history!
Our business has seen many changes and developments throughout its history; the need to support the War efforts during WW2 to the rise and fall of the Lancashire textile industry. Diversification has been key to navigating these challenges and is equally important today to remain competitive in a rapidly changing market environment.
We may be known for our red and green vehicles seen the length of the country, but today our organisation focuses on how we can better aid a customer’s business and how a customer can gain value from the services we offer. This maybe through the use of technology for full supply chain visibility with live notification, through to helping a customer achieve scope 3 net zero targets.”
Where “Our head office is still in Padiham, where we moved to 24 years ago. This is our main transport depot which supports the rest of the depots nationwide with vehicle planning and
maintenance. Our Burnley and Blackburn sites offer contract logistics solutions with over 350,000 sq ft of modern warehouse space. Supporting our nationwide transport operations are depots in Coventry and Newport - South Wales.”
Size 420 employees across all depots, 200 vehicles and over 400,000 sq ft warehousing space
Why Burnley? “Burnley is where the business was founded, it’s where a good proportion of our employees are based and it’s where we believe we can attract the best talent to continue developing our business. We work with many suppliers from the Burnley area who provide services to us not just in Burnley, but nationwide. The support from the Burnley Council and Burnley Bondholders far exceeds that of any other council we operate in.”
