Award for outstanding achievement in biological research contributing to the advancement of forestry was made to Nicholas T. Mirov of the California Forest and Range Experiment Station at Berkeley. This award consists of an engraved plaque and a cash honorarium. His outstanding research project was an investigation of the resinous substance of 80 species of pine trees.

Carl Davies, for the past several years sales manager for Imperial Lumber Company, Los Angeles, has established his own wholesale lttmber firm specializing in direct shipments of ponderos,a and sugar pine from qualified northern mills direct to Southern California retail dealers only.

For the past four decades Carl has been identified in lumber distribution and sales in L,os Angeles and the Southland. He joined the old E. K. Wood Lumber Company and learned the business from the ground up. FIis first assignments were in the yard, where he handled every job in production and operations. Working his way up to assistant talleyman, he later worked in every capacity, including orderman, order desk sales and administration. During his many years in the industry he served in every branch of retail and wholesale distribution. Although a wholesaler, he has the retailer's point of view and the knowledge to carry him through, to work out the needs of his customers.

Carl is a veteran of World Wars I and II. He was attached to the Corp of Engineers with the Air Force at San Bernardino Air Base, where he procured millions of feet of lumber for our armed forces. He is well knorvn at all levels of the lumber industrv. Carl resides in Glendale with his wi{e Maria, who recently returned from an extended trip to Europe, including Germany and France.
