'Lumber trading followed a spotty trend in the period ending October 24, according to Crow's Lumber Market News Service. Retailers bought more heavily than usual in July and August and are making up for it now by staging a slowdown, Crow's said. While there were a few indications that the downward trail is about to level off, there had been no dependable signs of it yet. However, it is more difficult today to buy green fir dimension at the lowest end of the price spread. On Utility dimension, some mills were trying to get a dollar more, while others have not felt justified in attempting it. Some support for a firmer tone was also seen in the fact that at today's price levels a good many log-buying mills are looking at their hole-cards and, if they decide to shut down, will likely be out of production till Spring, Crow's said. There was a fairly wide price spread in Std & Btr K-D dimension, both fir and hemlock, depending on mills' order files. Straight Standard dimension was steady. Ponderosa pine boards did not gain strength but did not suffer pricewise either, and there was a fair amount of mixedcar business With Winter approaching and air-dried stock disappearing, pine mills were not forcing their boards on the market.
