.Hemlock Stondord lssued in 'the Glue Lominoted Field
i' West Coast hemlock, long a favorite lumber for struc1 lural and finish purposes, now joins its sister western spe' cies, Douglas fir, in the glue laminated field.
During the past few years, there has been a phenomenal

increase in the use of structural glue laminated lumber for churches, schools, auditoriums,' homes, warehouses, commercial buildings, bridges, and other large structures. This great increase in use of glue laminated lumber (estimated by one national architectural magazine at 500/o in three years) has necessitated a constant study of new techniques and new methods in end use.
For years, Dbuglas fir was used almost exclusively by the glue laminating industry. In the past few years, there has been more and more demand for glue laminated west coast hemlock.
To keep pace with this demand, the West Coast Lumbermen's Association has iust issued a new standards for West Coast hemlock. Called Standard Specifications for Structural Glued Laminated West Coast Hemlock Lumber, this edition, for convenience, has been divided into two publications.
The first booklet covers Design and is intended primarily for architects and engineers. The second booklet covers Fabrication and is for the use of timber fabricators and inspection agencies. These new standards also incorporate the latest recommendations of the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory. Copies of both are available without charge from the West Coast Lumbermen's Association, 1410 S.W. Morrison Street, Portland 5, Oregon.
"These new standards," said T. K. May, technical director of WCLA, "are currently being used by the timber fabricating industry."
May said the publication Design includes design stresses, eftect of duration of load, and effect of curvature on stresses. Also included are recommended minimum radius of curvature, criteria for end joints in individual laminations, and adhesives. Standard sizes of glued laminated members are given. The standard appearance grades, recommended by the American Institute of Timber Construction, are included in the appendix. The specifications also contain a table of properties of sections of the standard sizes of glued laminated members which are handy for design.
The Fabrication publication, May continued, contains requirements for lumber grades, adhesives, end joints, edge joints, assembly of laminations into a member, tapered members, and protection of glued laminated members. Combinations of lumber grades appropriate to the design stresses listed in the Design publication are given.
