Chemical Brown Stain in Pine Digcussed At Dry Kiln Club Meeting \

The last meeting of the Central California Dry Kihr Club was held in September at the Collins Pine Company's mill at Chester, Calif.

Forty men enjoyed a lumberjack meal at the mess hall, and Elmer Goudy, general manager of the company, welcomed the group.

Bill Thexton of the Scott Lumber Company, Burney, Calif., president of the Central California Dry Kiln Club, presided at the business meeting, and was moderator during the afternoon's discussion of "Chemical Brown Stain in Pine."

Al O'Brien of the Collins Pine Company, who is in charge of the brown stain research being conducted ir'cooperation with the Western Pine Association, reported on their progress to date. The effect of bulk piling of green sugar pine 4/4 and 6/4 lumber on the development of chemical brown stain during subsequent kiln drying was found to be most pronounced, he said' Bulk storage of the green lumber for more than six days appears ttr make it more susceptible to stain during kiln drying, and storage of 14 days may cause degrade of over 50 per cent in 6/4 stock, he stated.

Carl Rasmussen, head of the Research Department of the Western Pine Association, indicated that the results of this series of experiments will be made available as each phase is completed.

The men examined the Collins Pine Company's kiln installation, and the new kilns being built.

The next meeting of the Club is scheduled for November 18 at the plant of McCloud River Lumber Company, McCloud, Calif. This will be a joint meeting with the Oregon Dry Kiln Club.

The strength of a timber can be determined more accurately by visual inspection than can that of any other technically determinate structural material.

Following the convention, tours of several of the Redwood mills have been arranged as well as a tour to Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks' There will be several committees of Northern California lumbermen who will see to it that the National Association visitors have a memorable staf in California.
