Establishment of $1000-a-year forestry fellou'ships at both the University of Washington and Oregon State College v.,as anuouncecl yesterday by J. P. Weyerhaeuser, Jr', president of the Weyerhaeuser Timber company.

First reciirients of the fellorvships u'ill start graduatc u,ork at the beginning of the acaclemic year in September' They u'ill be selectecl by the cleans of the forestrv departments of the two schools.

"The fellou'ships will provide opportunity for capable young men to continue their studies in problems of forest manag'ement," \\reyerhaeuser said. "It is expected that the forest industry's increasing need for scientific knorr'ledge in the management oi forests and the need of deserving stuclents for help of this nature r'vill both be served by these fellorvships."

Students n'ill have an opportunity to pursue their studies in the forests of the Weyerhaeuser Timber cornpany, rf and r,vhen such facilities u'ill be an aicl to their research.

The importance of skillful forest management in the conservation of timber resources s'as stressed by Weyelhaenser in announcing the fellorvship grants. Obtaining the maximum yield frotn forest lands on a continuous anrl sustained basis is of irnportance not onlv to the forest industry but to the general public as u'ell, he pointed out.

Commerce Depcrrtment Reports on New Construction

Neu' construction put in place in September u':ts valuetl at $1.9 billion reaching a seasonal peak at abottt the same level as last year, the U. S. Department of Commerce reported today.

The September figure r.r'as only fractionally larger than the total for August. and the outstanding clevelopment in the construction situation rr'as the contra-seasonal advancc in private homebuilding.

During the first 9 months of 1919, the total value of new construction amottnted to $14 billion, 1 per cent more than the total for the same period last year' according to the Department's Constrttction Division. While many types of private constructiott have dropped belou' the levels oI a year ago, pultlic construction has more than made up the difference.
