Striking operating engineers on October Z2 voted' to accept the offer of their employers, thus ending the rock, sand and gravel walkout that idled thousands of building and construction craftsmen and held up millions of dollars worth of construction in the Los Angeles area. The union called the strike on October 3 over its demand for six paid holidays. The new contract, it was stated, provided for an increase ol 2l cents in hourly wages and longer paid vacations for employees with two years or more of service. Work was resumed in the gravel pits on October 24.

The lumber market continues firm. The freight car shortage in the fir region, which has been curtailing lumber shipments at the mills, was reported to have eased up some during the past week.

The Western Pine Association for the week ended October 15, 95 mills reporting, gave orders as 74,026,000 feet, shipments 69535,000 feet, and production 71,242,0N feet. Orders on hand at the end of the week totaled 236,695,W feet.

The Southern Pine Association for the week tober 8, 93 units (116 mills) reporting, gave 18,128,000 feet, shipments 17,938,000 feet, and 16,480,000 feet. Orders on hand at the end oi totaled 51,806,000 feet.

Ocorders as production the week

The West Coast Lumbermen's Association for the week' ended October 8, 167 mills reporting, gav-e orders for 129,256,W feet, shipments 104,808,000 feet, and production94,357,000 feet. Unfilled orders at the end of the week totaled 461,599,000 feet.
