"There is a tide in the affairs of men. which" taken at the flood "rleeds on to fortune," said Bill Shakespeare. And he proceeded #",further to declare that the man who overlooked that critieal and pregnant opportunity would be a oohas-been" from then on.

*** r' As a writer weove got our lid off to Bill. He was, is, probably 'will always beo in a class by himsel{ literarily (if there is such a if-word). And it may be his philosophy as above quoted was filled lii.rwith wisdom as applying to HIS times. Things moved mighty ii slow in Bill's day. That was long before the days of radio, rockets, ?,,,'tdonorails and astronautics.

For the Devil never handed a bigger lie to the poor faltering man to keep him from trying to get somewhere and do something, than old Bill Shakespeare's "opportunity" philosophy. W'e have been under the impression that the Devil's printing presses have been continually and tirelessly busy ever since Shakespeare died, reprinting'Bill's line of opportunity bunk for general distribution and follow-up service on this old earth; and that he had the whole dad-blamed line-up of human creation on his mailing list.

John Ruskin wrote: "r.r*"uJ., lu*r, or morning be to you as the beginning of life, and every setting sun be to you as its close, then let every one of those short lives leave its own sure record of some kindly thing done for others, some goodly strength or knowledge gained for yourself."

An American traveler ,";";J before the war is reported to have seen and copied this remarkable little bit of tree philosophy, rubi6h''f,e1't ,pe*ed A.*e €ilge of e public lereet iri thct country: "Ye who pass by and raise your handagainstme, hearken ere you harm me. I am the heat of your hearth on the cold winter nights; the friendly shade, screening you from the summer sunf my fruits are refreshing draughts quenching your thirst as you journey on; I am the plank that builds your house; the'board of your table; the bed on which you lie; the timber that builds your boat; I am the handle of your hoe; the door of your homestead; the wood of your cradle: the shell of your cof{in. I am the bread of kindness, and the flower of beauty. Ye who pass me by, listen to my prayer! Harm me not!"
