WCLIB's service throughout its territory will not be disrupted by establishment of Western Wood Products Assn. grading in the Douglas Fir region. The overwhelming majority of mills in the Douglas Fir region have indicated that they plan to continue with WCLIB grading and inspection.
WCLIB's expanded service territory, in' cludes that part of Washington lying west of the Okanogan and Columbia rivers and that part of Oregon west of the l2fth meridian. The l2fth meridian is a direct northward extension of the CaliforniaNevada border. Except for the Ochocos, this is non-timbered country and puts all of the Cascades within WCLIB's service area. It does not extend eastward, however, to the Blue Mountains as yet.
This line is as far east':as Westside grad' ing values now apply.
WCLIB will grade to i,ts own traditional rules and values for West Coast type species growing in this expanded area. Any future extension of its service eastward, would require grading to the rules of the old Western Pine Assn. (now merged into Western Wood Products Assn.) All grad' ing of Westside species by .tty agency in the Douglas Fir region will have te follow WCLIB rules.
WCLIB now grades for 310 mills. Only 5l mills (two of them currently inoperative) have resigned from WCLIB to join the WWPA grading service. There are, of course, also a number of mills using separate, non-rules-writing. grading services.
WCLIB will continue to issue certification of grade and volume only through its own independent staff, ..Iree of any mill interpretation. WCLIB ihspectors are stationed in offices at Eureka, Calif.. Medford, Eugene and Portland, Oregon and at Seattle, Wash.
WCLIB already has on its stafi inspectors fully qualified to superintend grading of ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, Engel' mann spruce, Idaho white pine, western larch and sugar pine.
