Mochine-groded OutPut Soors
The production of electro-mechanically stress-rated (EMSR) lumber in the West will approach 100 million board feet in 1964, iccording to a special lumber industry survey.
Five western companies produce the major portion of machine-graded stock on the market, and all were covered in the study. They indicated their production volume during the first half o{ 1964 ex' ceeded 46 million board feet, and that the production pace was accelerating.
Reporting companies were Bohemia Lumber Co., Culp Creek, Ore.; BoiseCascade Corp., Boise, Idaho; Frank Lumber Co., Mill City, Ore.; Potlatch Forests, Inc., Lewiston, Idaho; and Simpson Timber Co., Shelton, Wash.
Other mills also machine-grade lumber, but did not participate in this survey.
The reporting mills machine'grade with an electro-mechanical continuous lumber tester which precisely determines the exact strength of each piece of lumber. Ratings are automatically stamped on the wood, identifying it for proper use at pre-fabri' cating or building sites.
High demand for the stock has come initially from manufacturers of residential roo{ trusses, surveyed mills reported, primarily because technical knowledge is greatest there.

Arcsto Redwood lmprovemenls
Plans to install chippers at Arcata ,Redwood Company's two Orick sawmills have been announced by Howard A. Libby, president.
Particularly significant at this time, the announcement emphasizes Arco's determination to stay in business despite a proposal to establish a 31,000 acre Redwood National Park near Orick. This determination to stay in business is further emphasized by the fact that the chipper installations require the investment of $150,000 additional capital.
The chipper installations will result in improved utilization of the company's timber resources and will maintain job opportunities and help stabilize the economy in the area. The chips produced will form part of the resource base necessary to sustain operatiort of two pulp mills at Samoa peninsula. Additional employment will be generated in transporting chips from Orick to the pulp mills.
The chipper from the company's Arcata sawmill is beine modified for installatrlon at $4ill ,A in Oiipk. Meanwhile, specifications are being drawn for a new chipper for Mill B. It is estimated that the combined output will be in excess of 50 units per day. One unit contains as much wood as 1.200 board {eet of roush lumber.
In addition to chips, material which formerly was burned is now being taken from the waste conveyors of these two sawmills for manufacture into lath and into edge-and-end-glued lumber.
All are part of the company's efiorts to achieve maximum utilization of the first redwood harvest and, through clean logging and prompt seeding, to ensure the rapid growth of high-quality trees for subsequent harvests.
