Redwoods Are Alreody "Soved"
Large areas o[ the most majestic and beautiful of Cali{ornia's original grorvth redwood forc-sts have already been set aside as public parks, preserving them lor all time. This has been done rvith the cooperation of the rcdwood lumber industry and of citiz,rn group-s.
In these rcdwood parks, it is estimatcd. are 1.500,000 original redt'ood tree-*. inc'luding most of thc oldest and tallest known trecs. About one-third of thc entire present area of old growth recll'ood forests are now in public hands.
There are norv trventy-sir Redwood Parks, totalling over 100,000 acres, admini-"tered bv the state of California. Some of these are small and readily accessible, others cover thousands o{ acres and includt' regions still in practically the original forest condition.
Additional arcas in the hands of bureau and divisions of both the national and state government bring the area of public owned redrvood forests to nell over 200"000 acres. llr I Weyerhqeuser Eornings Skyrocket
Weyerhaeuser Co. turned in one of the most outstanding per' formances of any forest products firm ever during thc first half o1 1964, boosting its earnings a spectacular 60 per oent over the corresponding period a year earlier.
Record first-half net profit totaled $32,058,000, Norton Clapp, president, has reported. This was some $12.1 million higher than earnings o{ $19,995"000 in the first half of 1963. Per share earnings rose from 65 cents to $1.05.
Sales of $323,437,000 also set a record for the period, rising 15 percent from the comparable 1963 total of $280,516,000.
Accounting for the rise, Clapp said, was continucd strong demand for pulp coupled lvith rises in both volume and prices of lumber. On the deficit side, he added, was Weyerhaeuser's packaging operations which "continued to sufier from extremely competitive pricing, despite good volumes."
He predicted a continuation of favorable volumes and margins in the lumber, wood products and pulp segments of the business.

lnlond Building lVloteriols Becomes Welsh Distributor
Inland Building Materials Co. of Rialto, Calif., is now exclusive distributor for Welsh Panel Co. products in southern Cali' fornia, Richard Setter, president of the Longview, Wash. firm which produces the new Kasenga line of Satinwall hardwood paneling has announced.
In making the appointment, he said Inland's "outstanding dealer service, with active and continuing assistance to dealers" was responsible for the exclusive distributorship arrangement.
Satinwall prefinished hardwood paneling, credited with attaining a new high o'state of the art" in panel elegance and beauty, is made with W'elshos exc, lusive polymatic finish. According to Edward G. Abdella, Inland vice president, Satinwall is meeting enthusiastic acceptance by the trade as it is realistically priced and "sets standards of excellence best compared with the finish of fine furniture.l'
Abdella said Satinwall is finished with a new heat converting catalyzed resin. The finish converts when heat is rapplied and forms a plastic type bond orifthe surface of the panel, giving it a high degree qf scratch and wear resistance, according to Abdella. He said the catalyzed resin finish is superior to lacquer in flame-spread rat- ing because lacquer, with a nitrocellulose base, will support a flame where the catalyzed resin finish will not. It resists most common household chemical solutions, such as alcohol, lard, oil, mustard, vinegar and ammonia. Satinwall is guaranteed for the life of the building.
Crayons, Iipstick, nail polish and shoe polish can be easily removed from the suriace with common household naPtha, energine or lighter fluid with no aftereffects to the finish. Neither will boiling water damage the Satinwall finish, Abdella said. Dirt and smudges on such panels may be cleaned simply by wiping them off with a variety of household detergents and scratches may be repaired easily with matched putty sticks or most types of rubbing compound, according to Abdella.
