Eight leading lumbermen of the southern California area have been awarded Intra Industry Five Year Awards for their voluntary contributions to wood promotions by the National Lumber Manufacturer's Association's National Wood Promotion Program. The eight were not members of the federated associations of NLMA, but still have financially supported asociation promotion for the past five years.

The group was presented the plaques at the Ed Fountain plant. Included were: D. H. Steinmetz, IIl, president, Standard Lumber Co. of Los Angeles; Ford Barclay, general manager, Pine Ridge Lumber Co., City of Industry; Pi Bliss, representing Bob Neiman, Neiman-Reed Lumber & Supply Co., Van Nuys; Sterling H. Wolfe, vice president Marquart-Wolfe Lumber Co., Long Beach; Max Hill and Ftrank

Rooney, chief executives of O. M. Hill Lumber Co., Montebello; Gordon Woolard, representing Burns Lumber Company of Los Angles and Ed Fountain, president of the Ed Fountain Lumber Co. Stanley A. London of Summit Lumber in Beverly Hills was also honored for his generous support but he and Barclay were unable to attend the presentation.

In making the presentations for committee chairman Hi Mersereau, who could not travel west from Washington, D.C. for the occasion, lumberman Harvey Koll said, "I feel highly honored to have been selected to present these plaques to you. It is with sincere pleasure therefore that The National W'ood Promotion Program on behalf of the American lumber and wood products industry presents these tokens of deep appreciation."

Following the ceremony Ed Fountain entertained the group for luncheon and then gave them all a personally escorted trip through the remanufacturing plant he operates.

The National Wood Wood Promotion Program is a subsidiary of NLMA. It seeks to promote and broaden wood usage in as many areas as possible.

Nqlionql Forest Products Week

The fifth annual observance of National Forest Products Week is set for October 18-24, 1964. Sponsored by thi Intemational Order of Hoo-Hoo, The Week is supported by all indusuy asso' ciations which have pledged cooperation and participation. Allied industries also participate.

The purpose of The Week is to focus public attention on forest producG and their importance to the economy of the country and the public welfare. Hoo-Hoo Clubs, Lumber-Jac groups and Wood Councils throughout the United States and Canada may participate to carry out the program on the local level.

During National Forest Products Week, contact is made with the general public at the grass roots level to make each individual cognizant of wood, its role in the ,economic and daily life of the individual. Hoo-Hoo Clubs may sponsor displays, exhibits, feature films, contests, news stories, television spots, and radio commer' cials, all in the cause of lumber and forest products.

An instruction manual outlining the 1964 p{ogram of NFPW and serving as a guide for local observance is now available from Hoo-Hoo International. Again available for this year's NFPW observance is a reproduction proof of the official logo, bearing the slogan, American Forest Industries-to be used for printing and poster purposes. Newspaper mats are available on request.

Single Building Code Sought

In an important move toward clearing the tangle of local building codes across the country, the National Association of Home Builders and the four model building code organizations have discussed the development of a master code for residential construction.

NAHB specialists have met with the code organization representatives to discuss the need for a single code setting forth structural, rnechanical and electrical requirements.

Those code organizations are the Building Officials Conference of America, International Conference of Building Officials, National Board of Fire Underwriters" and Southern tsuilding Code Congress.
