thought worth remembering: When a jackass looks into a mirror, only a jackass can look back at him.

And here is a better thought: Human ideals are like stars; you don't reach them-you just reach for them.

And then there was th" Jr" i,i tn" l"ti.uressen that reads: "If you can't smell it--we haven't got it,"

And the tough top sergeant who said to the rookie: "Wipe that opinion ofi your face."

Many wondert,rl thilg. ;"" ;"^ ,lia "r'a written about Lincoln, but few if any compare with those of Col. Bob Ingersoll, who said: "He was educated in the university of nature-educated by cloud and star- by field and winding stream-by billowed plains and solemn forest-by morning's birth and death of day-by storm and light-by the ever eager spring-by summer's wealth of leaf and vine and flowers-the sad transient glories of the autumn woods-by winter, builder of home and fireside, who's storms without create the social warmth within.',

Moses was but " ,holt ti-l or, ,1" -Ju,r,urn, and he brought forth the Ten Commandments, on which civilization has been built. But Moses had learned most of the laws contained in the Ten Commandments when yet a child, from the Code of Hammurabi, which had been in existence and known to all scholars for hundreds of years before Moses was born. There were forty. two commandments in Hammurabi's code; like Moses, old Ham had announced centuries before as did Moses centuries later that his code was handed him ready made by the Lord. I'm not questioning anyone's veracity, you understand, just quoting from the record.

BY JACK DIONNE

In an old trrook on the subiect of war I found the followine colorful statements, some of ihem better known to readers oT today than others: "He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day; but he whols in battle slain will never rise to fight again." Another was: "That army is the bravest that can be whipped the greatest number of times, and fight again." And this one: ooThe greatest test of courage is to fear defeat without losing heart." And this powerful linelescribed a warrior of old: "He steered his exact cours€ to the point of danger." And it was Lord Nelson who said: l'When I don't know whether to fieht or not I always fight."

Sweetest story of women at war that I know of happened in Alabama during the Civil War. A young Alabama girl is guiding a southern soldier over trails unknown to him. The soldier is General Nathan Bedford Forrest, one of the most formidable fighters in history in addition to being an outstanding cavalry officer. Suddenly shots flew around the head of Forrest. Instinctively the little girl spread her skirts wide in front of Forrest, and called to him: "Quick! Get behind me!" For that is the spirit of the American woman in war.

The pessimist ur,a tnl optili., *"r" o*r"* politics. The pessimist spoke of a recently elected politician, whose entire lack of intelligence, ability, and character he proclaimed in unmeasured terms. "But," said the optimist, o'there is one thing that must be said in favor of his election." "And, what can that be, pray?" asked the pessimist. "His success," said the optimist, "will 'be an eternal inspiration to every ignorant, worthless rascal who aspires to run for public office." And so, you see, he who seeks for good may find it anywhere.

Someone ofiers a -rr*rrr, ,""u n** ot*uarni"" on how to make a speech. He says: "Be sure you have a good beginning, a strong ending, and that you keep those two as close together as possible."
