235 Sourh Alomedo Street los Angeles 12, Colifornio lvllchigon | 854 clerestory windows above the opposite wall. The ingenious upper level balcony, .because of the precipitous slope of the lot is at ground level at one end rvhere it merges u,ith the paved bedroom terrace, and about 10, above ground at the other end. The balcony is enclosed with 3/s,, thtck Exterior type Douglas fir plywood fencing on both sides of 2,, x 4,, railing supports, capped by a 2,, x 4,, railing.
The kitchen area is separated from the living room by the brick fireplace. Shelves and counter built about the brick division and at one end of the fireplace rvall form a combination working-dining table that helps define living room and kitchen.
The lower level of the house contains a car port, and service area rvhich is separated from the garden by a large masonry pier containing an ash pit for the fireplace. A fireproof closet (2%' * 5l') lor rvater heater, meters, etc., also provides storage for patio furniture.
Douglas fir plylvood rvas chosen for large panel size and great structural strength, as well as beauty. The fact that plyrvood's size and strengtl.r were important in this home is attested by the fact that Architect Drake had to prepare an isometric drawing to convince the local building in_ spector that because of structural diaphragm action of the plyu'ood, and a unique joist and girder structural design, this seemingly frail structure t,as amply strong and would actually stand up in an area lvhere earthquakes are not uncommon.
The wood post and girder system employs 4,, x 1,, posts, 6'on center, strapped at the bottom to the {oundation and carrying through continuously to the roof system. On the upper level, where permitted by door and window spacing, 7' x 4" studs are placed between Lhe 4,, x 4r, posts, 18r, on center. Between the posts, /g" Exterior type Douglas fir plywood is employed as a structural skin as well as siding. Panels are applied vertically, nailed and glued to the framing members. Joints are covered with narrow wood battens.
The upper floor system is carried on 2x6 beams that rest on two 7' x 8" girders that occur on either side of the posts. Five-eighth inch plywood, nailed to 2x6 joists, 6,, on center, forms the subfloor of the upper level. On the trnderside of these 2" x 6" joists, /s" thick Exterior plywood panels form the ceiling of the lower level.
The plywood subflooring is covered by Chinese matting on the inside; and covered with tightly drawn canvas on the adjacent balcony.
