The California Redwood Association received reports on production, shipments and stocks for 1949 from 37 mills, among which are included all Association members, 12 limited members, and 16 other redwood producing mills. The combined totals are shown below.

The 1949 redwood production shown in the table includes 487,383 M feet of lumber and 5,100 M feet of byproducts, largely shingles, shakes and lath. Whitewoods production includes l3I,4I7 M feet of lumber and 363 M feet of by-products.

2l of" the 37 mills which reported in 1949 also reported in 1948. They show a decrease in total production lor 1949 of 1.5/o. Redwoob production for these mills decreased 2.5/o, while Whitewoods increased 2.5/o.

Hills Flat Lumber Co. Hqs New Owner

The sawmills and retail and wholesale yard operated at Hills Flat, Calif., by Pete Andreotti since 1928 have been sold to the Matson Lumber Co. The new owner took over July I. Mr. Andreotti will retire. E,d Matson will live in Grass Valley.

Fisk & Mason, jobbers of all roofing products, South Pasadena, are sponsors of a softball team in the South Pasadena Department of Recreation League. Play started in the league May 22 and will continue through the end of August.

The California Forest & Range Experiment Station has estimated that there were 393 active mills in the redwood region during 1948, and that redwood production was 793 million feet. Tl-rey based their estimate on reports from 195 mills which included all mills cutting over 5 million feet as rvell as most of the mills cutting over 1 million feet during the year. The 2I mills which reported to us for both years, produced 443 million feet or 56/o of the total 1948 estimated redwood cut. If production of all other redwood mills also decreased 2.5/o, as noted above, the 1949 estimated redwood cut woqld be approximately 772 million feet.

Will Rebuild Mill

Long-Bell Lumber Co. has announced plans to rebuild the sawmill destroyed by fire last summer at Vaughn, Ore. George lIays, division manager, said the ,contract has been awarded to Stein Bros., general contractors at Eugene, Ore. Tl-re mill will be ready for operation by October 15.
