Inland mills, including eastern Oregon and Washington and the rest of the West, saw a 2Vo rise in production, though shipments matched 1999 totals and orders fell 3.87o.

Production gains were achieved despite a l7o dip in housing starts and a 3.2Vo slide in single-family unit construction.

WWPA projects 2000 housing starts to be 1.56 million units, a decline from 1.66 million last year. Lumber demand also is expected to decline to 52.5 billion bd. ft., down from 54.3 in 1999. a3.37o decline.

Dealers Get OSHA Grant

The Lumbermen's Research Foundation, educational arm of the National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association, has received a

$98,298 grant from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The grant application was submitted to assist in marketing an Internet access program that helps train lumber professionals to comply with OSHA regulations. NLBMDA members can obtain materials from the foundation, which is conducting training seminars through federated associations.
