Drive Time Precautions

Business owrcrs usually are well aware of procedures required for rogulated drivers who operate large delivery vehicles. But, according to CNA Insurance, more than TOVo of vehicle collisions in the woodworking industry involve passenger cars. pickup trucks or small delivery vans.

Companies shculd have procedures in place concerning anyone who drives on company time, whether they're going go out on sales calls or just running errands. CNA suggests: o Ensure that job applications require listing of all driving violations or accidents for the past five years. o Request authorization from applicants and existing employees for the employer to obtain and review motor vehicle violations records on a regular basis. r Require proof of a valid driver license from all who will drive a vehicle for company purposes. o Check individral driving records annually for all workers who drive on company business. e Require workers who drive on company business to immediately report to the employer any vehicle accidents or driving citations (personal or work related). o Establish a written documented system for qualifying company drivers. r Carefully evaluate the number and types of violations or accidents. Disqualify employees whose records reflect major violations, such as DUIs. For less serious violations, take a close look at recent history.

Are tires in good shape? Is the vehicle in good condition. or does it appear to have been in a series of accidents? Look for dirty windshields, beer cans, beverage containers, or trash in the car.
