CASCADE Lumber, which formerly concentrated on smaller glulams for residential hea'ders, is now shipping larger beams and timbers for roof framing in commercial buildings. Cascade supplied 24" deep bv 56' lono Power Beams for exoosed roof framino oir Nortn C-reek Presbyterian Chuich, MillCreek, WaI

Anthony WoodWorks computer programs. "We believe that ongoing education for specifiers highlights the excellent strength values of laminated beams for standard applications," Holskenecht says.

To promote engineered wood, the firm treats its builder accounts to Friday evening customer appreciation "cook-outs"-where engineered products are prominently on display.

Dealers Go Long With Glulams

More retailers are increasing their sales volume of engineered wood by promoting long-span glulam beams.

Golden State Lumber, San Rafael, Ca., is dealing in longer length glulams. Says Moshia Smith: "The glulams fill the same function as LVL, but they are stronger, better looking and less expensive."

A typical sale at Golden State might be 3-1/2", 5-l/2" or 7" wide glulams in I-joist depths. Golden State inventories the Anthony Power

Beam, supplied by Georgia-Pacific. "Because the Power Beams have Ijoist depths, our customers don't have to pad out their walls, and the glulams don't shrink or twist like solid sawn timbers," Smith explains.

Evan Holskenecht, Cascade Lumber, Stanwood, Wa., says the 3000Fb design values of Power Beams are good for the longer spans in custom homes today.

Cascade provides engineering assistance to builders with their

Cascade builder customer Ryan Payne, Camano Island, Wa., says that local inventories of the glulam beams help complete construction projects faster than steel framing because steel takes a longer lead time for delivery, and requires extensive shop drawings.

"With the Cascade/Anthony computer program, we can punch in our loads and come up with strength values for beam applications," Payne says. "Engineers feel comfortable putting their stamp on the drawings. And the glulams are stronger, lighter and cost less than PSL or LVL."

House Probes Maxxam Deal

A House Resources Committee task force is investigating possible banking regulatory improprieties regarding an $821 million federal claim against Maxxam Corp., Houston, Tx., parent of The Pacific Lumber Co.. Scotia. Ca.

Under particular scrutiny is a 1995 plan by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and the Office of Thrift Supervision to pressure the federal government into taking ownership of roughly 63,000 acres of Northern California timberland in lieu of claims against Maxxam and its chairman, Charles Hurwitz, pertaining to a failed thrift.

Lawsuits allege Hurwitz and Maxxam failed to meet capitalization rules during their tenure as controllers of the now-defunct United Savings Association of Texas and its holding company, United Financial Group, Inc., which went bust in 1988.

"Banking regulators' lawsuits from our perspective are politically motivated, " said Maxxam spokesman Josh Reiss. "The regulators have engaged in a bureaucratic shell game in order to seize the private property of one of our subsidiaries."

Legislation was passed in 1999 that provided $450 million to purchase some 5,600 acres of redwoods in the Headwaters Forest from The Pacific

"They could gobble up companies like Potlatch with the snap of their fingers, as recent history has shown."

- Paul Ehinger.

Eugene, Or.-based consultant on industry giants IP, Weyerhaeuser, G-P and Kimberly-Clark

Lumber Co. As new legislation is required for additional redwood purchases, the task force is investigating whether banking regulators working with the Interior Department attempted to circumvent the law through lawsuits.

Committee chairman Don Young (R., Ar.) suggested regulators, possibly influenced by environmental groups, sued Maxxam to pressure the firm to surrender the land.

"Everyone understands that the Headwaters Forest issue was settled, period," said Young. "Now we are learning of a backdoor attempt to break the asreement."

LACN Convention Nears

Bigger Digs For Retailer

Sheridan Discount Building Supply, Sheridan, Or., has moved across town into a larger store formerly occupied by Copeland Lumber.

The move separates the retail operation from wholesale businesses Myers Woodline, Inc. and Pacific Fir Lumber Co.

"We think it's going to be a good location," said co-owner Brad Meyers. "We'll be able to display things and we'll have a lot more room to carry essentials."

Meyers said that insufficient display space had been a problem at the previous store. "I think we're looking at about doubling in size," he said. "It'll be easier to shop. We're adding more items and expanding the product line."

In addition to lumber, doors, ply- wood, mouldings, fencing and hardware, the new location also will carry Pittsburgh Paints, according to Myers.

"We've got a smattering of all different kind of things," he chuckled.

Penofin Prez Pens Primer

Castle "Skip" Newell III, president, Penofin-Performance Coatings Inc., Ukiah. Ca.. has written a book about volunteerism, a subject he is most familiar with.

A recipient of the 23lth Point of Light Volunteer Award, Newell's book, Point of Light: Portrait of an American Volunteer is a "true adven- ture book," according to his wife, Dr. Barbara Newell, ceo and chairman of Penofin-Performance Coatings.

"We feel strongly about volunteering to help the sick, ill, injured and unfortunate," said Dr. Newell. "I hope everyone in the home improvement industry will read my husband's book and encourage their employees, vendors. customers and distributors to continue to promote social change."

The book covers the author's more than 20-year career as a volunteer. "It is my hope that each of you who read this will commit to helping someone somewhere," Newell said.
