- Following Congressional pressure, Department of Commerce Secretary Alexander Trowbridge said his department would publish a new standard, and drop his request to Congress to agree upon one. Rather than more industry voting, he would get advice from the American Lumber Standards Committee, publish the new standard in The Federal Register and hold hearings if necessary, Later the new standard would replace the old.

W'estern senators joining the Senate protest were Gordon Allott (R-Colo.), Len B. Jordan (R-Idaho), Frank Church (D'Idaho), Peter H. Dominick (R-Colo.) and Paul J. Fannin (R-Ariz').

"Consumers are not getting the kind of lumber they want covered by standards they voted to accept," summed up Rep. Arnold Olsen (D-Mont.), who spearheaded the House discussion.

Other westerners joining him in urging withdrawal of the standard were Representatives Catherine May (R-Wash.), C. NI. Teague (R-Calif.), Julia Butler Hansen (D-Wash.), James F. Battin (R-Mont.). George V. Hansen (R-Idaho) and Sam Steiger (R-Ariz.).
