There's No Escaping Basics
T HE disruptions of the current recession have I caused more than one program of "modern marketing" with multimedia presentations and like trappings to be looked at with a cold, hard and unblinkingeye as to its real dollars and cents value. What seemed so hip during the times of the full order file don't always seem to stand up so well to close scrutiny when contrasted with what can be accomplished by a return to the basics of selling in today's tough market.
Earlier this year, Denver-based Johns Manville kicked off "Initiative 75" a no nonsense get-outthere-and-sell program that stresses positivism for all levels and parts of the giant concern, notjust the sales department.
The pep letters have a good old-time ring to them: one says, "Don't put your foot in the door, put your head in...so if they slam the door, you can keep talking." Another urges, "Don't wait for customers to call you-call them." Yet another, "Be positive, optimistic, hungry, cooperativeearn the customer's business."
The program utilizes another time honored method of increasing sales: getting to work when your customer does. Recognizing that some of JM's customers like to call early from the job, employees began manning the phones from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., doing it through a volunteer program of juggled hours that avoided increased overtime costs for their employer.
While the program might draw a smirk from the Madison Avenue slickies, it is having the desired effect. And in these tough sell times, any increase in business can be an occasion for some satisfaction.
There is no magic to the program, nothing new or startling. What it does affirm is that there are a number of truths in selling that simply do not go out of style. Initiative, hard work, empathy for the customer's problems, asking for the order - all the basics of selling are alive and well, revived back to respectability by the realities of a grinding recession.

,r-\NE of the newer Diamond International (formerly l:-fDiamond National) retail building supply centers is located in Spokane, Wa. The modern store, opened in April, 1973, replaced an older facility in another part of Spokane.
The center is the 39th operated by the company's Western Retail Division in California,Idaho and Washington. Manager Vernon Payne, who has been a resident of Spokane for over 40 years, is a l5 year employee of Diamond.
The entire installation covers an area of 4.5 acres. The modern structure provides 10,000 sq. ft. of shopping area displaying name brand appliances, carpeting, power tools, garden equipment and supplies, hardware, and other building and home improvement materials.
An additional 12,000 sq. ft. of the adjoining warehouse displays pre-cut lumber, plywood, doors, moulding and related items. Another 24,000 sq. ft. building will warehouse additional materials for the building trades.
Following the supermarket principle of merchandising, items are displayed to facilitate self-service stropping. All merchandise, including lumber, is pre-priced to make it easy for customers to calculate their costs for home improvement projects.
Do-it-yourself shoppers can purchase lumber in small quantities as easily as they buy groceries. A large parking
area assures ample space and makes it easy for the shoulder trade to carry small lumber purchases home in their own cars. Delivery of larger orders is provided from the lumber center.
The store has a display area where customers may see a model kitchen and bathroom, inspect product displays, see demonstrations and receive advice about home improvement projects from the trained sales staff.
Besides offering Master Charge accounts and revolving credit, Diamond has its own financing plan to assist homeowners in obtaining loans for home and farm modernization or repairs.

Moving out the moulding
/|\ T one time or another every Ahandyman yearns for the right tools to complete a job. The same needsapply toproduct sales. It's tough selling without the right marketing tools. And it's just as tough trying to sell a product foreign to your knowledge and experience.
That's what Western Wood Moulding and Millwork Producers discovered when the manufacturers' trade association investigated ways to stirnulate nationwide wood moulding sales. Even though a variety of sales tools were available, there was a wide product knowledge gap among the salesmen.
This led WWMMP to develop what may become the most important sales training and marketing toul ever developed for wood mouldings and jambs. It's called "From Tree to Tim, A Guide to llood Mouldings and Jambs".
It's 96 cleverly illustrated, hard working pages of-interesting, informative data written especially for mould-

increasing number of people flinvolved with forest products are checking futures prices with greater regularity, but often without a clear understanding of what all those numbers mean.
It is the goal of this series of two articles to acquaint you with the idea and concepts ofhedging and to increase your understanding of the futures markets, as they pertain to the forest products industries. The futures market is often critized and rarely praised.
However, the years I have spent in specializing in the forest products area continue to point to one simple fact. Those that have the foresight to accept futures as an increasingly major aspect in their pricing characteristics, and who will work with the opportunities the futures market offers, are those who stand a better chance of successfully surviving increasingly volatile prices.
While many readers may be involved with all three of the traded forest products, plywood, lumber and studs, for purposes of simplification these discussions will concentrate on the lumber market.
Today there are truly two types of lumber markets:
(l)
The Cash Market with its numerous grades, species, lengths, manufacturers, freight and shipping considerations, etc. Commercial transactions of this nature are the ones tailored to the needs of the buyer and seller and are contractual obligation s satisfied onlv by performance.
(2) The Futures Market where you buy and/or sell on an exchange, under the terms of a standardized contract, a specific amount

of lumber (100 mbf KD HEMFIR 2 x 4 RL 8'-20'). This is also a valid contract which can be offset by a reverse action in the futures market before delivery time.
For example, if you bought a July lumber futures contract, you could sell a July lumber contract to offset your position (or vice versa).
Futures prices are often defined as present expectations of a price at some future time. As termination of a lumber contract (July lumber-July l5th) draws near, the price expectations can be more clearly defined. Thus a converging in price upon expiration occurs.
Story at a Glance
Part I of a brief examination of the fundamentals of futures markets, what comprises them, how and why they work and how they can be a very valuable asset to those who can successfully use them.
Convergence is also brought about because if near expiration, futures are above the cash market for the contract grade (premium), mills will sell futures rather than cash, forcing futures to lose their premium. Likewise, if futures are below cash (discount) wholesalers or retailers or users will buy futures instead of castr. This buying brings futures closer to cash. It is this converging of prices which makes futures markets a viable hedging tool. Hedging is most simply defined as strifting of risk.
The fact that futures prices move up and down and can be controlled by a small margin deposit makes them an attractive vehicle for a speculator who will position himself long 6r short in anticipation of a price change. Often criticized for his roll in price action, the speculator adds liquidity to the futuresmarket and often takes the role of assuming the price risk of a hedger by taking an opposing position.
In review, futures price action is becoming an increasingly significant factor in the volatile price movements being experienced in today's forest

Getting the message out
a EVERAL northern California tim)b., "ornpanies and independent logging contractors joined together to take a little of the redwood country to southern California over Memorial Day weekend.
Under the name "Timber Education Council", they told nearly 100,000 persons how timber is managed with concern for the environment.
Site for the exhibit of forestry expertise was the giant Del Amo Fashion Square in Torrance. It has been estimated more than one million persons live within 15 miles of the shopping center.
Council spokesman Pat McKelvey said independent North Coast contractors, such as Bill Boak, Qlenn Shirmann and Lyman Goucher joined in the cooperative effort with several companies to "get the story of what we do and how we do it to people who never have been up here and whose judgments of loggers and timber management have been based solely on what they read in the newspapers and fiction of the preservationists."
Story at a Glance
Loggers and lumber manufacturers combine to present a forestry exhibit in the megalopolis of Los Angeles to present the true facts of timber management to the city folks.
Contributing funds and personnel for the five-day run of the shopping mall's annual Sports and Recreation Show were The Pacific Lumber Co., Louisiana-Pacific Corp., Arcata Redwood Co., Simpson Timber Co., Miller Redwood Co., Masonite Co1p., GeorgiaPacific Corp., Harwood Products, Schmidbauer Lumber Co. and Simonson Logging Co.
Featured attraction of the exhibit, the theme of which was "Trees: Here Today, Here Tomonow", was profes' sional tree.climber and acrobat Malcolm Harper of Port Angeles, Wa., who performed last year at the World's Fair and.Exposition in Spokane. He climbed a North Coast-grown tree and performed on top of it two or three times daily in the indoor arena.
Surrounding the big tree were displays which illustrated such things as the growth of trees in the seedling stage and sections of old and secondgrowth timber to show what happens to old growth timber that isn't cut and by using second growth, to refute the false claim by some that once a tree is cut nothing replaces it.
"Our theme is built on the concept that timber industry people and independent contractors are as concerned about the environment as anyone, and have a great deal at stake to see that the earth is left in a condition to produce outstanding trees year after year," McKelvey said.
SOME 7,000 Doug fir seedlings were given away by the Timber Education Council, see foreground, picture at left. Moving the 40 plus foot f ir tree into the mall (center) was a hassle. Seen are Larry Hurley, Masonite; Mal Harper; Pat McKelvey, Simpson Timber and spokesman for the T.E.C.; and Glenn Schirmann, an independent logging contrac' tor. Al right,Willard Pratt, Arcata Redwood, talks with spectators. More than 20 North Coast men and women travelled with the exhibit to the southland.
PRO TREE climber Mal Harper does his thing, chats with crowds on second floor of high stropping center.

That sure, steady upturn in housing starts so lovingly foreseen by the experts this spring, pooped out in sltmmer '75 as still reluctant home buyers decided to stay put.
An unexpected clecline dropped the seasonally adjusted annual rate to I ,070,000 (lowest for any June silrce '46); at halftime '75, starts are down l/3rd from '74's lst half, which wasn't a boom period by a longshot. . bldg. permits moved up a piddling 1.5% from May.
A housing assn. spokesman called the figs. "very disconcerting; we had becn looking t'or another increase;" they may shave their I .2 million total start estimate for all af '7 5. .the major area of weakness in starts was in apt. construction.
Charging that Pres. Ford is getting bum advice, Nt'I. Assn. of Home Builders seeks an econontic summit on housirtg to develop ways to end the housing sag. . construction activity in June , however, maintained its improved level of recent mos.: June figs. for future construction were uD 13% over the same mo. in '74. .'.
Home mortgage interest rates rose in June after declining for 5 mos., a possibly spooky signal of things to come. .consumer confidence, says the U. of Michigan, has rebounded, but only to a point that is one of the lowest levels of the '70s.
The prime rate (the bank's minimum interest charge on corp. loans and the basis for all other lending rates) moved up to 7/27o, as the Federal Reserve topk steps to combat further inflation; some experts averred that it was a bump, not the start of a new hillclimb rn rates.
Reports from the recent Chicago Housewares Show tell of optimistic exhibitors (not surpris- ing) but also of wary retailers who plan to keep svelte inventories, anticipating continued consumer hesitancy regarding housewares.

I\ I OISP is a word that is gaining in I \ importance as the Year Passes. Both the federal and state OSHA offices are conducting sound level surveys. The law states that if You have any equipment suspected of exceeding the 90 decibel level you must have a sound survey conducted. We are in the process of conducting the surveys for over 100 of our members. The results maY astound You. Equipment you believe to be relatively quiet frequently exceeds the permissible sound level. You must have the
survey in your files for review by the OSHA compliance officer should he stop for an inspection. If you do not then you are in violation and subject to a fine.
The association has been conducting the surveys for approximately $50. The same type of survey would cost ybu up to $1,500 from a commercial company. This one association service is well worth the dues you pay.
Noise from OSHA is not the only noise being emitted from Washington. Hearings are currently being held on the EPA demand to reduce the noise level to 85 decibels which could cause a number of corporations to give up the ship. The unions are solidly behind the reduction even though it could mean closing a number of businesses and an increase in unemployment.
There is a lot of noise from our legislators at both the federal and state levels but then next year is the presidential election and prospective candidates are baying at the moon hoping to be heard. If we listen to all of them and all they have io say our country is doomed. The best remedy for the political barrage is ignore i/! It won't go away so turn a deaf ear toward it. The environmentalists and the unions are getting their way at the cost to the citizen and we, the citizlns, accept one slap after another without much of a whimper.
Maybe our best course of action is to give in to their demands and pass the cost of all their demands plus a 50% mark-up on to the consumer.
We should all develop a standard answer for our customers who complain about the increase in prices' Just tell them it was added on by the unions and environmental groups.

Good Planning Increases Plant Efficiercy, Pole Construction Cuts Costs
Increased plant efliciencies of 30% to 50% were realized by our close cooperation with our client, Commercial Lumber Company, Inc. of City of Industry, Ca. Here, Vice-president Raymond Gutierrez ol Commercial Lumber confers with Leon Durham of Treated pole Builders, Inc.
Built for less than $4 per square foot, this S0, x .100, storage shed holds up to 750,000 board feet of lumber. Easy accessibility aids work flow pattern for greater plant efficiency.
Umbrella roof construction and post and beam construction of this 40' x 60' mill means easy access for forklifts, trucks and other equip_ ment. Remarkably, the poles can be placed at almost any separalon for maximum efficiency and convenience. pole construction meant fast, money-saving construction.
As Treated Pole Builders, Inc., we provide unique turnkey services to our customers from conception and planning through site-selection, design and construction. This single-point responsibility provides optimum plant layout and maximizes efficiency ot operation at a minimum cost of construction. The use of treated poles in post and beam construction results in substantial cost savings and design flexibility. Commercial Lumber Company estimates that the Treated pole design of their new facility has increased their operating efficiency 30% to 50%.
Poles pressure treated in the ,,Cellon" proc€ss, developed by Koppers Company, Inc., were used throughout; the treating system impregnates the poles with chemicals providing enduring protection agalnst decay and insect attack.
We design a building tor every need.

Association of Southern California
THE SOUTHLAND
By WAYNE GARDNER
executive vice president
A fPW vears aqo the Lumber Asso^fl,ciation of -Southern California picked up an idea from an organization known as the Wood Information Bureau to promote wood and wood products.
An advertising campaign was started on an every-other-month basis in a publication that was sent to architects, engineers, specifiers and other persons who could help cause lumber and wood products to be used. This was supplemented by an ad on alternate months in a magazine basically for contractors. With each ad an insert allowing anyone to request literature or information was included.
The ads contained pictures of what was considered to be unique uses of lumber.
Measurement of the effectiveness of such a program is difficult. In looking at responses they have been found to generate requests for over 500 pieces of literature per month. And duplications (from the same firm or two months in a row) are eliminated. This doesn't include telephone calls for literature or assistance.
Within the next month, LASC will have a man in the field calling on these same architects to see if additional assistance can be offered them.
The number of requests, both in writing and by phone, indicate a real desire on the part of designers, architects, engineers and contractors to know more about the product lumber as it is sold by the retail lumber distributor in southern California.
LASC, as one of its primary aims, will continue to promote to those

I special housing conference was .f \recently held in Kansas City. Participating were 15 associations representing building material manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, and our national retail lumber and building material dealers association. The objective was to examine collective courses of action to stimulate short and lons
range housing market. A very brief summary of some conculsions reached:
Direct message to consumer for more positive attitude toward acquisition of a new home. A recent survey shows a diminishing interest in home ownership, mainly because of high prices. Those seeking to stimulate the housing market must assure buyers that the values obtained through home ownership still exist.
The Merchanl tlagazine users and specifiers of lumber. It has been able to do so as a result of the financial willingness of the members to support such a program and because the manufacturing associations have been so willing to co-operate with LASC in furnishing the necessary literature either at cost or, in some instances, free.
The lumber industry is tremendously fragmented as all who are involved in it know. But a promotional effort as put forth by LASC, and supported by the producing area associations gives the industry a united front that equals any of the major competitive materials. But all these efforts go for naught unless the sales people follow up and sell the lumber products as specified.
If the associatiod can promote and the salesmen sell. we then have a viable industry. But we don't sell, we create in our prospect a desire to buy. And we can do this through a co-operative effort.
Use your association. Call on us for help, just as we call on another association for help.
Let's get away from mediocrity. Let's really make this an industry that each of us can take pride in and realize a profitable existence from. Let each of us do our thing and we'll make. it.
. Cooperative effort to develop and promote legislation to reduce yo-yo situation in housing.
No miracles appear to be forthcoming as a result of this conference, but it is a start in inter-industry cooperation that will be continued and hooefully lead to positive accomplishments.
Our national association is deeply involved in developing energy saving designs. One method being developed requires the use of 2x6 studs to get the "R" value in exterior walls.
Owens{orning Fiberglas is working on this and was at an information meeting sponsored by the Homebuilders Association of Denver that was held recently.

WO bills now before Congress legalize secondary boycotts.
Every one of our members should be aware of what effect they would have on the construction industry.
Secondary boycotts would cripple the construction industry by shutting down thousands of projects all across the country, putting tens of thousands of workmen off the job and adversely affecting business and industry of every kind.
Research, but its understanding of corporate profits is apparently worsening. In a similar survey in 1973, the public's estimate of the average manufacturer's after-tax profit was 28Vo, five points lower than the current guess.
Another finding: For the first time in 30 years a majority of the public believes the government should put a limit on corporate profits.

As a result of secondary boycotts this would happen:

. Urgently needed refineries, power plants and other energy-related projects would be jeopardized by disputes and delays.
. "Product Boycotts" on construction sites would restrict the use of costsaving methods and materials, adding unnecessary cost to the project.

He indicated they will continue the buyer's workshop as an annual event.

New hardwood tally rules
y'\ N outstanding example of indus.l-\try cooperation has occurred in the California hardwood lumber industry. In a move designed to eliminate confusion and create more standardized measuring practices, the California hardwood industry has agreed to sell hardwood lumber on net tallied footage.
The old-time nationwide practice of adding footage to tallies to offset kiln drying shrinkage was found not to be in conformity with California Business and Professional Codes. Orders taken after July I, 1975 are being delivered out of yard so that the fpotage received on the shipment and the invoice footage should be the same. As Fliir Wilson might put it "Now, what you see is what you get."
The customer price per thousand may be 5 to7% more than before, but since no footage will be added to the tally for kiln drying shrinkage, the net
cost to the consumer will be about the silne.
Hardwood lumber will still be measured with the board rule in accordance with the NHLA Rules.
' Industry representatives from northern and southern California met in Sacramento on May 22, with Waltet Watson. Chief of Measurement Stand-
Story at a Glance
lmportant changes in California regarding selling hardwood on net tallied footage may soon become the standard practice in the entire West, and eventually, the rest of the country.
Jack W. Millikan Lane-Stanton Lumber Co. Presiden t, Sou thern California Hardwood Lumber Association
ards, State of California. The details were worked out as to the changeover and a date of July l, was established.
So that California wholesalerswill not be standing alone on this issue, an immediate effort was made by Watson to make the other 12 Western states aware of the California action. In July and August of 1975, measurement standards officials from other parts of the U.S. are meeting and discussing the possibilities of a nationwide net footage kiln dried tally use.
Over 10,000 Southern California Hardwood Lumber Assn. letters have been sent to users ofhardwood by over 20 wholesalers explaining this change. It is the purpose of the industry to better inform the user regarding what to expect when he receives hardwood.

Plywood Annual Meeting
An upbeat assessment of the plywood industry's market prospects through the next l8 months was provided at the 39th annual meeting of the American Plywood Association in Portland.
Addressing more than 600 members and guests, APA exec. v.p. Bronson J. Lewis said that the industry has started to recover from the severe market collapse of 1974 and early 1975.
"The plywood industry isn't going to break any production records in the second half of this year," said Lewis. "But it should finish the year with around 16.3 billion sq. ft. of production, a welcome improvement on last year's 15.9 billion."
He also said that the industry is picking up speed for an expected record plywood year in 1976:. "production should reach 18.7 billion square feet next year." The best year to date was 1973's 18.3 billion feet.
Lewis expressed encouragement at recent improvements in the rate of new home construction and expects this trend to continue.
Plywood's improving market prospects, he added, are also based on continued healthy growth of the home remodeling and do-it-yourself sectors, and of many other diversified markets such as commercial construction and industrial packaging and materials handling. He described remodeling/do-it-yourself as the No. I plywood growth market.
Retiring APA president and incoming board chairman William C. Smith, v.p. and general manager of Timber Products Co., Medford, Or., said that the plywood industry 'lhas an unrivaled record as a recession fighter."
He contrasted last winter's grim conditions, when nearly one-third of the total industry was idled by the market crash, with the current "still not ideal but healthier position." H9 reported nine mills closed and 40 curtailed for market reasons in the week ending June 21, out of 190 mills nationwide.
DON'T
JUST HANG THERE CALL ALL-COAST. Coll
Smith added: "lt says much for the worker loyalty and high caliber of management in the plywood industry that mills can survive the traumh of last winter and still be around for the better markets we now see ahead."

products. The many segments of the forest products industry are becoming more actively involved as the futures markets prove themselves a valuable tool in the area of avoiding price risks and in capital management. (Point of interest - The 40th Yale Industrial Forestry Seminar which was held in November of 1974 was titled, "Futures Trading-Its Uses In Forest Industry").
Capital management and requirements can be improved upon bY those using futures for hedging. Hedging can reduce the need for storage facilities, thereby reducing fixed capital investments, maintenance costs, working capital for inventory and interest charges if less working capital is required. More favorable financing can often be
arranged for hedged inventories as they hold reduced price risks.
A futures contract is a valid contract between a buyer and seller for delivery of a specified amount of a specific commodity on or about a specified future date under the rules of an exchange. Futures contracts differ from cash market contracts in two principal areas:
(l) They are standardized by the exchange and
(2) They can be easily negated by an opposite transaction in the market (or offset).
Hedging may also be defined as assuming a position in the futures market opposite that assumed in the cash market, thus transferring a price
Washington Dealer Featured
Nationwide response has been generated for Lumbermen's of Washington, Inc. from an article in the June 1975 issue of Mechanix lllustrated titled "Homes for Under $5,000!". A featured home in that article is the "Skokomish," a model designed and built by the Homes division of Lumbermen's.
Stan Lyman, manager of Lumbermen's Homes at Shelton, Wa., saYs the magazine project was a cooperative venture with the American Plywood Association of Tacoma. Mechanix lllustrated was doing a story on doit-yourself homes, the shell of which could be constructed for under $5,000, and Lumbermen's happened to have a model they were looking for.
According to Lyman, "resPonse from readers in nearly every state has been tremendous" and although Lum' bermen's does not build or ship homes outside of the Pacific Northwest, "we are sending additional information to all who have inquired."
The "skokomish" is a modified "A"-frame with 960 sq. ft. of space including loft, plus a deck. It's designed as a vacation or retirement home, or as a small permanent home.
risk. Since the futures contract is closely related to a cash market trans action, cash prices and futures prices will tend to converge upon expiration of the contract, thus making hedging possible. Note that it is always neces' sary to calculate into a hedge transaction the premium or discount the futures prices may contain.
Next month's article will deal with hedging itself.

Re-use Form Panel
MultiPour, a multiple re-use concrete form panel, has been introduced by Simpson Timber Co.
The plywood panel has a resin impregnated fiber overlay on one side, permanently fused to the plywood under heat and pressure. Up to 20 reuses can be expected from MultiPour panels when proper care and handling procedures are followed. If a higher number of re-uses are required. Simpson's FormGuard, a high density overlaid panel, is recommended.
Like FormGuard, many economies are affected when MultiPour panels are used on a job; lower maintenance costs result. The panels resist abrasion during the pouring process. Stripping and cleaning can be rapidly accomplished.
Panels are available in 4'x 8' or 4'x l0' size with either 5/8" or 314" thickness. Other thicknesses can be provided on special order.

Two prominent Brazilian hardwoods
BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD, JACARANDA
ri RAZILIAN rosewood has been Dan artrcte oI commerce tor several centuries, but amazingly, there are no technical data available for this species. It would appear that its early acceptance by the makers of classic furniture mitigated against the need for a thorough academic study of the wood properties. At any rate, Brazilian rosewood or jacaranda, as it is known in Brazi., still maintains its long established reputation as one of the most esteemed woods of the world.
Brazilian rosewood occurs in the eastern forests of the State of Bahia to Rio de Janeiro. Having been exploited for such a long period of time it is, at present, nowhere abundant.
The wood of commerce is very vari able with respect to color ranging through shades ofbrown, red, and violet and is irregularly and conspicuously streaked with black. Many kinds are distinguished locally on the basis of prevailing color. The texture is coarse and is commonly overlooked because attention is generally drawn to the color. Grain is generally straight. Heartwood has an oily or waxy appearance and feel. The odor is fragrant and distinctive. The wood is hard and heavy, thoroughly air dry wood is just barely floatable in water.
The strength properties have not been determined, but for the purposes for which Brazilian rosewood is utilized they are more than adequate. In hardness, for example, it exceeds by far any of the native hardwood species used in the furniture and veneer field.
The wood machines and veneers well. It can be glued satisfactorily, providing the necessary precautions are taken to ensure good glue bonds as with other woods in this density class.
Brazilian rosewood has an excellent reputation for durability with respect to fungus and insect attack, including termites, although the wood is not
used for purposes where these would present a problem.
Brazilian rosewood is used primarily in the form of veneer for decorative plywood. Limited quantities are used in the solid form for specialty items such as cutlery handles, brush backs, billiard cue butts, and fancy articles 'of turnery.
Due to existing shortages of Brazilian rosewood, present day shipments may include wood of somewhat similar color but of finer texture, which belongs to the closely related genus Machaerium.Wood of the later genus is known in Brazil by the common name of caviuna.
Story at a Glance
Brief run downs on the characteristics of Brazilian rosewood (also known as jacaranda) and goncalo alves... both woods have long been well-known commercial species.
is grayish-white and sharply demarcated from the heartwood. The Pig' ment figure in these species is quite striking and very characteristic. The texture is medium and uniform. Grain is variable from straight to interlocked and wavy. The wood is very heavy and averages about 63 pounds per cubic foot at 12 percent moisture content.
Although the wood is in the high density class, it is not difficult to work with machine tools. It turns readily, finishesvery smoothly, and takes ahigh natural polish. The heartwood is highly resistant to moisture absorption and the pigmented areas, because of their high density, may present some difficulties in gluing.
The heartwood is rated as very durable with respect to fungus attack.
In air seasoning studies; goncalo alves is observed to dry at a fast to moderate rate. It is rated as moderately difficult to season. Degrade observed is moderate crooking or bowing accompanied by a sliglrt tendency to twist.
Checking is noted to be slight. Shrinkage is low, especially so in consideration of the high density of the wood.
GONCALO ALVES
Because of their extensive growth range these species are known locally by a variety of names. The major and early imports of this wood have been from Brazil, where the commercial name is goncalo alves. This name has also been adopted by the U.S. trade. These species range from southern Mexico, through Central America into the Amazon Basin.
The heartwood is very variable with respect to color and ranges from various shades of brown to red with narrow to wide, irregular strips of dark brown or nearly black. The sapwood
The high density of the wood is accompanied by equally high strength values, which are considerably higher in most respects than those of any well known U.S. species. It is not expected, however, that goncalo alves will be im' ported for purposes where strength is an important criterion.
In the United States the greatest value of goncalo alves is in its use for specialty items such as archery bows, billard cue butts, brustr backs, cutlery handles, and for fine and attractive products of turnery or carving.

Next year we celebrate 25 years, so are combining that with the California Centennial. which should make for a wonderful convention.

Enclosed is a picture of the Broadbill Swordfish I caught recently with my wife and Herb Koller and his wife fishing off Mazatlan, Mexico.
These fish are difficult to get to take the bait and hard to catch. It took two hours and weighed 197 lbs. and was 9lz feet long. I was one exhausted lumberman by the time it was landed.

case you do not believe that you have received the same footage as appears on the invoice, insist that your supplier show you that the tally is correct. If you are a carload buyer and receive quotations from outside California as well as California wholesalers. ask if
the quotation is based on green footage. Be sure you are comparing "apples with apples"!!

This isUnion Pacific marl<eting lumber.
At Union Pacific we believe we're more than a railroad. We're an important part of lumber marketing. And because of this, we're also planning for the future.
Changes in the rapidly expanding lumber industry have required innovations in the marketing of lumber to the various points of demand. We're studying new schedules, pricing and
specialized equipment that will be needed to handle the industry's requirements. We're doing our homework so that when 1980 comes we'll both be ready.
When you think of Union Pacific, think of more than fast, efficient transportation. Think of us as a team of experts planning how we can better serve your industry's needs.
