LUMBER NT]MBERS
In response to Ralph Lamon's article, "The Oregon Sawmill industry: 1981," in the March edition of The Merchont, I would like to clarify any confusion that might result from Mr. Lamon's statement referring to Western Wood Products Association production figures. In the article Mr. Lamon states: Lumber production in Oregon is "on a slow-bell basis" and then continues by writing, "According to the Western Wood Products Association, production in 1980 was 8590 of normal. In my opinion association figures are simply off target. Production was closer to 700/o for the year and is currently in the 65-7590 range."

While I wish, for the industry's sake, that the statement attributed to WWPA by Mr. Lamon was correct, I would like to set the record straight. The Western lumber industry operated at 75.590 of its practical operating capacity during 1980. Please refer to the industry fact sheet contained in the WWPA Western Lumber Facts report.
While WWPA does not publish capacity figures for Oregon alone, as the major lumber producing state, it certainly could be considered representative of the Western lumber industry.
It is unfortunate that an opinion was expressed based upon a mis-quotation. I'm sure we all agree that 1980 was disastrous for the industry and we look forward to improved production figures as l98l progresses.
ation stayed on long after Mr. Barto died and was yearly the cause of Pop honoring Mr. Barto's birthday by going to see Mrs. Barto on that day and reminiscing over the old and happy days.

Gage McKinney wrote and you published in the April issue one of the most gripping accounts of "The Old Days" I've ever had the pleasure of reading.
Mr. Barto was indeed one of the finest men I ever met. The first time I met him must have been when I was 9 and the memory of this big bear of a man, his booming voice, his kindliness to a kid and that fascinating python skin on the wall of his office is still very much alive. It was a most impressive day!
He really was the mentor for Dad that Gage described. That respect and admir-
Betty and I just returned from an extended trip to Australia, visiting seven Hoo-Hoo clubs and helping to start a new one in Port MacQuarie in Queensland.
The timber business is brisk in Australia. Queensland is booming. They do a magnificent job with slash pine, growing a lot of it in plantations. Most of the plantations in Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales grow Monterey pine.
The Hoo-Hoo clubs in Australia are preparing for the Hoo-Hoo International Convention in Melbourne in Sept., 1982. It should be a hum-dinger.
