Ethics-This committee should work closely with theChamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau to maintain a high quality program and to guard against unethical activities.

Special Activities Committee-This committee is responsible for developing special projects such as: homeowner clinics held by dealers; information centers conducted by lending institutions who can distribute literature; radio and t-v, home improvement talk shows, shopping mall information centers and clinics.

Generally, a community program is scheduled for approximately one month. May has proven to be the best time to launch the home program with October for the best Energy Management Program.

The Home Improvement Time program file contains a complete guide for each representative group and for each committee function. There are speeches, radio/t-v scripts, ideas for special building projects, contests, ideas and other promotional suggestions to help make your community program a success,

To provide more practical help, there are three detailed reports showing how Portland, Or.; Seattle, Wa.; and St. Charles, Il., organized and implemented their community programs.

Keep in mind that during the time your local community program is taking place all national consumer magazines, including Better Homes and Gardens, House Beautiful, House and Garden, Sunset, l00l Ideas, the Hudson Publications. and others, are carrying interesting editorials, encouraging their readers to undertake a home improvement project. At the same time all trade associations are heavily advising their members to join in and cooperate in local home improvement programs. Your customers are being pre-sold on the subject of home improvement, making your local program extremely timely and effective.

What is the bottom line for you as a home center, a building material dealer, or a lumber dealer? Basically, attention will be focused on home improvements for 30 days, with the community exposed to a coordinated advertising and publicity program that will substantially increase your sales and profits. It has been proven that the size of your community has no bearing on its success. The key is to have all representative groups in the industry join in the program.

To begin plans for your Energy Program in the fall of 1981, or your community Home Improvement Program in May of 1982, write to: Home Improvement Time, P.O. Box 102, Carnegie, Pa. 15106, and enclose a check for $2 to cover mailing and handling costs.
