New Home Lumber Store

A third home center is now under construction by Home Lumber Co. in Victorville, Ca.

The firm has a home center and a contractors yard at its San Bernardino headquarters as well as a home center at Hemet.

The new store will have a retail sales areaof 25,800sq. ft., plus 7,200 sq. ft. of covered lumber storage. Set for September, 1984 completion the store is anticipated to have 32 full time employees and l0 part time. Departments will include lumber, hardware,

D-i-y Show on PBS Network

Ten leading building materials companies have joined forces to underwrite a new half-hour show called "The Do-It-Yourself Show," scheduled for broadcast on the PBS television network.

An upbeat series on home improvement, the show demonstrates how the average homeowner can have fun, save money and get professional results by repairing, remodeling and improving a home the "do-ityourself" way. The show actually demonstrates, on camera, how to plan and accomplish projects that will make a home more beautiful and se- building materials, electrical, plumbing, paint, housewares, giftwares and garden supplies. cure as well as energy and space efficient.

Store layout will be based on their award winning Hemet Home Building Center including indoor Plant and display gazebos and a cut-away house to demonstrate home improvement and building methods. The facility is on five acres.

Major contractor was San Antonio Rigid Pole Construction Co.

New Housing Jumps SVo/o

Construction of new housing units jumped 5790 in 1983 from the year before. New housing starts totaled 1,719,347 units, against 1,W4,289 in 1982, according to McGrawHill Information Systems Co.

Dallas-Fort Worth led the nation in new housing units, with a total of 92,587 for the year, a 10090 gain over the previous year's showing. Houston ranked second, although its total of 58,369 units represented a decline of 1990 from that city's strong 1982 year-end total. For the rest of the year's top ten metropolitan statistical areas volume rose sharply: Phoenix, 48,991 units, up l05go; Atlanta, 42,907 units, up 8690; Washington, 36,961 units, up 10990; Tampa-St. Petersburg, 31,199 units, up 9490; Denver- Boulder, 29,149 units, up 5690; Los AngelesLong Beach, 28,128 units, up 8390; Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, 23,969 units, up ll49o; and Oklahoma City,22,70l units, up ll59o.

McFarland Cascade Moves To Tacoma

McFarland Cascade, a major producer of preservatively treated wood products, will move its corporate headquarterstoTacoma, Wa., from Sandpoint, Id. Themoveis planned to be completed by April, 1984.

According to B. Corry McFarland, president and chief executive officer, the move and some additional organizational and operational changes will allow McFarland Cascade to streamline customer service (see Personals section in this issue).
