Western Lumber Stays Home

California and Oregon were the No. I and No. 2 destinations for Western lumber in 1983, receiving 28.8t/o and 13,2s/0, respectively.

Washington received 8.190 with the rest of the western states receiving 18.390 of all the western softwood shipped to markets in the U.S. The South, including Texas and Oklahoma, received 14.7o/0, Lake States received 12.80/0.

These percentages added up to an overall market share of 4lo/o to dominate the domestic lumber markets. Canadian softwood and Southern pine were in second and third place. Going into every state in the U.S., Western softwood shipments increased to 15.9 billion board feet in '83 from 12.6 billion board feet in '82.

New W.O.O.D. Board

Richard Reid, vice president and manager of Colorado operations for Reid &Wright, Inc., is the newpresident of W.O.O.D., Inc., succeeding Linda Ulvedal, Wood Master Whole- sale, who remains on the board as immediate past president. Ed Kraich, Alpine Lumber, is president-elect; Mike Cundiff ,,ABZ Lumber, secretary-treasurer. New board members are Larry Lefkowicz, Paul Dodson, Neil Jensen and Gary Goodman.

Redwood Decks Are Selling

George Gower, vice president and general manager, explained that they research their markets and start their promotional thrust in the beginning of April. McCall, home of Payette Lakes Lumber, is a growing resort area, so they promote the architectural grades of redwood in this area with an eye toward the custom home market. They use redwood displays throughout the store, including redwood lattice and trim on counters. They even have a deck built in the shape of Idaho. The stores have a project center where customers can find ideas and plans from CRA literature and LaBelle films. Free deck design service is offered which includes scale models. CRA's DesignA-Deck Plans Kits are given free to serious customers. Siding samples are displayed on the walls of the stores, so customers can see what it will look like on large surfaces.

An in-house advertising agency prepares newspaper ads and handles radio and television advertising. In April, Payette Lakes Lumber and Evans Building Center kick off the outdoor season with an annual d-iy fair. Deck experts provide building tips and advice to customers and the stores offer pre-planned deck packages. Gower said they also hold redwood deck contests to generate interest during the deck building season. First prize is a gazebo, second prize cash and other prizes include gift certificates.

Successful redwood dealers will dways find a way to meet some special need of their community.
