ITECOGNIZING the importance

JIto dealers of prompt shipments of lumber with the least amount of damage possible, The Pacific Lumber Co., a ll5 year old redwood manufacturer located in Scotia, Ca., has established this type of service as their goal.

It seems to be working with their sales for 1983 showing substantial increases over l98l and 1982. Weekly production at Palco is estimated at 3 million board feet per week with current inventory of 9 million feet of dry redwood uppers and 50 million feet behind that on sticks, enough to guarantee ready delivery of any order.

To insure that this material reaches the dealer and the consumer in pristine condition, the company takes special precautions to protect its redwood against handling and shipping damage.

All kiln dried uppers are compiled into pretallied units containing about 1,750 board feet in measure. A special lumber press squares the sides and ends of the units and applies a card- board cover for protection. Eighteen to 20 of these units are then loaded on a truck allowing for highly mixed loads of redwood and Douglas fir uppers with redwood commons.

One truck can be loaded in about 20 minutes, giving Palco the capability to load over 20 trucks per day. "We like our unit system because we don't want to see our customers' lumber damaged during shipment. Truckers like it because they can get in and out of Scotia in a hurry," says Tom Malarkey, executive

vice president. All orders are pre-assembled before the truck arrives.

The lumber units are often strapped together into "multi-units." Each multi-unit consists of four or five individual units and is assembled with 2x4s between the steel bands and the lumber for additional protection. Palco is able to load shipments more quickly with this procedure, using large forklifts. The multi-units make a more stable load and can be cut apart for unloading with small forklifts.

Because Palco conditions each kiln charge an extra 24 hours to remove all the stresses in the lumber, the company is meticulous with the handling and packaging of its products. It maintains covered storage and loading areas to keep the lumber dry. Special attention is given to all of their lumber which includes 1 ", l-l/4", 2" and 4x4 redwood and l" and2" ftr,

As one Palco employee states, "We like to eliminate problems before they happen and increase our shipping efficiency by keeping our lumber all
