Specialist of the Year Precision Construction Q. How did you get into contracting,
particularly outdoor living projects? I grew up building—Lego, Lincoln Logs, etc. In high school and college, I worked with several construction companies and a mason. After school, I worked in the hospitality industry and did handyman and renovation work on the side. Sixteen years ago, I started my own company—general remodel work and structural repairs. In 2013, a previous kitchen remodel client asked me to do a deck. I had just started getting into social media; the pictures of that project and word of mouth led to more decks. In 2015, the primary focus of the company became decks. Then in 2016 I made the decision to commit to building steel-frame decks. Today, Precision is well known for its commitment to and specialization in steel-frame decks.
Q. How did you discover CAMO products?
A custom-homebuilder friend asked us to help him with a floating deck he needed done. He had purchased the material and asked us to install it. He had purchased the CAMO Edge Clip. It was my first time seeing it. I loved how fast and easy it was and began telling anybody and everybody I could think of that the needed to make it in steel-friendly

Two years ago, at a local contractor show my Deckorators rep introduced me to Greg at CAMO, and he let us try and provide feedback on the EdgeX metal clip that was being developed. EdgeX is now standard on every job we do. The ease of install and not having to be on our knees for install are huge plusses for us. We also have a CAMO Lever tool and CAMO Drive tool for every guy on the team. I have been incredibly fortunate to establish a relationship with Greg Groenhout at CAMO, as well as Katey Dommenick. They have been gracious enough to let us try out prototypes of the clips, Lever and Drive tools, and invite our feedback. With each version we see, the products keep getting better and better. It’s awesome to have such a great company listen to and act on your input.
Q. What’s next for Precision Construction?
As a company we will continue to push to build better and better projects. We want to become synonymous with steel-frame decks. We also want to continue and expand upon our relationships and affiliations with CAMO, NADRA, Deck Specialist, and others. On a more personal level, I am hoping that we can continue to coach and mentor others in steel and help them succeed with it.
