Festivals and events

New Year 2015! Vietnamese New Year - known as Tet - is celebrated from 18 - 21 February 2015. Contact us for more details.

12

Vietnam’s festivals are based upon the lunar calendar, and have both cultural and spiritual ties. One of the most significant is the Cau Ngu Festival, celebrated in January in the coastal city of Danang in reverence for fisherman and aquaculture. Perhaps the most colourful festival is the Hoi An Full Moon, held every month on the 14th day of the lunar cycle, when locals trade electricity for the glowing lights of lanterns under the full moon, sailing candles onto the Thu Bồn River. But certainly the most important annual event is Vietnamese New Year, or Tet, when families reunite in hometown reunions. Although one of the most fascinating times to visit the country, it’s also one of the quietest times of the year with many government buildings and museums closing their doors. 13

Laos

about Laos The landlocked country of Laos boasts a still undiscovered charm and aura of mystery. As one of the least populated countries in Asia, Laos has a reputation as a country of arresting architectural beauty, fascinating ethnic cultures and untamed wilderness that can invigorate anyone’s sense of wonder and adventure. Alongside its snaking rivers and verdant valleys lie some of Asia’s most remote village communities and wilderness. With its strong and enduring spiritual traditions, Laos is a fascinating destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers in search for both rich cultural experiences and relaxing journeys.

Festivals and events

New Year 2015! Laos New Year - known as Bunpimay- is celebrated from 13 - 17 April 2015. Contact us for more details, and unique touring options.

60

The beautiful country of Laos is home not just to stunning wilderness, but some of Southeast Asia’s liveliest festivals. One of the most iconic is the Elephant Festival, paying tribute to the magnificent creature that makes Laos the ‘land of a million elephants’. Held each February in Sayaboury province, more than 50 elephants along with their mahouts take part in a colourful procession. Each April comes the Boun Pi Mai New Year festival, a three-day event that is a highlight on the Buddhist calendar. Recognised as the time for cleaning and renewal and to pay respects for family and elders, Buddha statues are washed while water is sprinkled on pious locals in hope for good luck. Nowadays, hundreds take to the streets in a huge water fight where even the monks are packing water pistols. Then comes the Luang Prabang Fireboat Festival held on the day of the full moon in October. By launching small, candle lit banana-leaf boats on the rivers with offerings of incense and small amounts of money, locals hope to bring luck and prosperity. In Luang Prabang, a fantastic fire boat procession takes place on the main street to the Royal Temple of Xiengthong. 61

about thailand Home to colourful cities, world-renowned cuisine and pristine white sand beaches, Thailand is as incredible as it is diverse. From the ancient temple ruins in the north to the sandy paradise of the south, Thailand is home to not just friendly locals and fascinating cultures, but some of the world’s most beautiful festivals and events. In a country that always seems to be bursting with colour, Thailand is a destination that certainly no visitor to Southeast Asia should miss.

Festivals and events

New Year 2015! Thai New Year - known as Songkran- is celebrated from 13 - 15 April 2015. Contact us for more details, and unique touring options.

80

One of Thailand’s most iconic festivals is April’s Songkran, or Thai New Year, when locals pay respects to family and elders. In Chiang Mai, thousands take to the streets in a huge water fight lasting three days. Then comes the Bamboo Rocket Festival. During the festival, local farmers believe they can improve the chance of rain by firing rockets into the clouds. In Yasathon in May, teams from around the province compete to make bamboo rockets. In November is the Surin Elephant Festival, celebrated as a lively two-day event where over 100 elephants and their mahouts participate in various games and challenges to test strength, grace and intelligence. Finally is the glittering Loi Krathong Festival or Festival of Lights. Taking place usually in November, thousands of floating lanterns are set adrift in waterways in a ritual meant to wash away sins and bring good luck. In Chiang Mai, the coinciding Yi Peng Festival in northern Thai Lanna tradition sends these glowing lanterns into the air.

Most are linked to the Buddhist calendar and tradition plays an important role. In January a two week festival is held at the revered Ananda Pagoda. Locals and pilgrims travel far and wide to pay their respects and join in the carnival-like atmosphere, especially during the full moon when the celebrations reach their peak. New Year or Thing Yan is celebrated during the hot month of April. The custom is to splash water on the shoulders to wash away the sins and welcome good luck. Nowadays, revelers line the streets armed with buckets and water cannons turning the three day festival into a huge water fight. One of the more colourful, is the hot air balloon festival in the skies above Taunggyi. Centred on Buddhist cosmology, balloons in various animal shapes are released as an offering to the heavens. 105
