message from ceo Dear Colleagues, As I walked from the reception of Victoria Hoi An Resort to the bar for a quick lunch before the board meeting, I heard “Anh Kien!” and when I turned, there was a beautiful smile from a young waitress who I met on a previous visit to the resort. Her smile, friendliness, confidence and enthusiasm are what I often see in all of our service units nowadays – and are what we have been working hard over the last two decades to achieve. The call of this young waitress is also a symbolic acceptance of me as part of the team which is so much different from the first tense meeting with all staff there almost three years ago when I became Chairman of Victoria Hotels & Resorts. The young waitress reminded me how Thien Minh Group is directly touching thousands of lives in seven countries and indeed all corners of Vietnam. We have done relatively well in creating a friendly, professional and dynamic environment for our people but there are many things I would like to do, from improving working conditions in our offices, health and safety in our properties, to better compensations and benefits for all. There is still a lot to be done! As the CEO, I do spend more time on numbers and yes, the numbers in the first four months have been good. Our group revenue increased 18% and we exceeded our profit target. As usual, we have the best four months in the history of our company despite a challenging market environment. Nevertheless, what truly matters is the level of customer satisfaction and the smiles we are bringing to our clients, and the values and opportunities we are creating for our own staff, shareholders and communities. This is our first group-wide newsletter to address communication issues highlighted in our last survey and one of the three commitments we made at the first group AGM in Siem Reap in March. The team has been working hard on this in such a short time and I would like to congratulate all for this first issue. I am sure there are things to improve but it is always great to take the first step. I trust this newsletter will help to create more wonderful smiles in Thien Minh Group. Wishing you all a great summer! Tran Trong Kien Chief Executive Thien Minh Group

PEAK Vietnam wins Exodus Leader of the Year Awards 2012 PEAK Vietnam received some incredible news in March when it was revealed that three of their Exodus leaders had won prizes in the company’s annual leader awards. This year, 1,200 Exodus passengers voted for over 200 leaders around the world and PEAK’s very own Danh Nguyen picked up the top ‘Overall Winner’ prize in addition to winning the ‘Best Cycling Leader’ award. On top of that, two more cycling leaders Long Le and Lam Nguyen, won prizes for being nominated in the ‘Highly Commended’ category. To have three cycling leaders win awards in this very competitive competition is a fantastic recognition of just how strong the cycling department is. To think that PEAK Vietnam started this department from nothing a little over a year ago to now winning such highly regarded accolades such as this, it’s a credit to these leaders. Congratulations to PEAK Vietnam for these outstanding achievements.

Danh Nguyen

Smile! We got the award!!

Victoria Can Tho in Air France Magazine Victoria Can Tho was featured in the April issue of Air France in-flight magazine. It is clear that the hotel has become one of the not-to-be-missed highlights of an authentic Mekong Delta experience.

Buffalo Tours - Cross-country staff training a success! In May 2013, Buffalo Tours Australia has just completed the first cross-country staff training programme. We have had Ms Trang Dinh from the Hanoi - Australian Agent Sales Team, working in our Sydney office for the past four weeks. It has been a very successful and productive month of training which has resulted in the improvement of processes, communication, product knowledge and destination knowledge. “Trang will be greatly missed and it is with sadness that we said goodbye. We look forward to future staff training placements”, said Sarah Griffin, Country Manager, Buffalo Tours Australia.

Xiengthong Palace football team wins 3 matches The hotel’s football team has recently been established and has already started to practice. On its first friendly match, played against Vangsana hotel, the team managed to score three goals, but the rivals scored four! The team then worked together to re-organise and train harder, and results came on the second match against Kiridara Hotel, with a wonderful 8-3 victory. This was followed by another good match against the powerful team from Luangsay Residence, which we managed to beat by 4-2. Victory was even sweeter when we played against last year’s champions, Amantaka, beating them 5-1 with four goals scored in the last 10 minutes of the match. Xiengthong Palace team is one of the top favourites for the hotel football tournament, which will be starting very soon.

SHARING CORNER

Mai Chau Trekking It was an early departure from Hanoi and there was the threat of rain in the sky. My fellow colleagues and I were excited to start our adventure – a trek to Mai Chau, well known for its clean air, beautiful scenery and minority people. Leaving the city behind, we travelled along the major highway for about 2 hours, watching the scenery change from busy streets into lush green fields. After a short coffee stop to stretch our legs, we continued to Mai Chau and a Tai minority village for lunch. A delicious lunch was prepared by Ms Mai the owner of the restaurant and we were surprised to see a famous Vietnam rock band Buc Tuong (The Wall) sitting behind us. After a few photos and autographs with the band, we took a short walk around the village and saw the local Tai handicrafts. Next, we travelled to the start point of our trek and began walking the 8km along a paved road to get to Hang Kia village, where we stayed with a local family overnight. It was so nice to have a hot shower and sit down to a tasty dinner cooked by our host family. We even had some of the local rice wine! The next day we were woken up very early to prepare for our trek down the mountain. After a breakfast of noodle soup, we said goodbye to our host family and started with a walk through the village until we reached a jungle path. This was where the fun and adventure of the trek began! One-by-one, we walked down the steep, rocky, narrow path, over logs and branches, through mud and thorn bushes until we reached a large clearing. It was quite difficult but the panoramic views of the mountains made it worthwhile. After a short rest break to admire the view, the remainder of the trek was easy very going, walking along paths by lovely green rice fields. We arrived at a local restaurant for lunch, where we took off our muddy boots and massaged our sore feet! On the drive back to Hanoi we stopped at a local market to buy seasonal fruit as gifts for family and friends. We arrived back in Hanoi later in the afternoon, tired and happy from a great weekend. Hello and updates from Asia Outdoors The Asia Outdoors staff have been enjoying the last of the cool weather on Cat Ba by doing lots of climbing before we transition into summer and the high season! Last December Vu Nguyen, one of our staff members from Hue, participated in VietClimb’s climbing competition in Hanoi and came home with 2nd place! In January, thanks to many kind donations, we were also able to send him to Singapore to participate in Gravical, a much larger climbing competition. We look forward to being able to send him to even more competitions in the future. This winter we’ve seen a multitude of volunteers join our staff, with the possibility of being hired full time. Their help has enabled us to tackle new projects and loan out two of our full time staff on a guide exchange program with Insight Adventures in Yangshuo, China. We are all very excited at the prospect of more guide exchanges and developing partnerships with other climbing guiding companies around Asia. In the coming months we are preparing to start two new endeavors. We will be opening a new climbing cliff in Sapa in conjunction with Victoria Hotels and we are currently navigating the legal waters concerning a potential new climbing area in Ha Long Bay! The climbing location in Ha Long Bay would open the door to servicing the many cruise ships docking there. Though Cat Ba typically becomes crowded with Vietnamese national tourists in the summertime, our business continues to mainly attract the international crowd. This winter we had the pleasure of serving many traveling climbers hoping to escape the heat. This summer, as the temperature rises, so do the tides! Finally we can start having regular deep water soloing trips, the most adventurous activity we offer! Matthew McGreever, General Manager, Asia Outdoors

Antoine Lobry shares his thoughts on the new promotion! It has been almost 5 years since the day I joined Victoria Vietnam Group, and without doubt, Thien Minh Group is a promising environment for managers in Tourism and Hospitality industry in South East Asia. After graduating with a degree at l’Ecole HoteliÌre de Lausanne and working in various hotels and palaces in France, I joined Victoria Vietnam Group in 2008, in our lovely Tonkin’s Alps property of Victoria Sapa Resort & Spa as Front Office Manager, and in the luxurious Victoria Express Train, as Train Manager. It was a great opportunity for me to learn how to completely (and independently) manage a team and our product. As a result of our hard work and thanks to the great team work, we also got the great reward of achieving our objectives in terms of quality, revenue and guest satisfaction After the assignment in Sapa, I joined the team of Victoria Phan Thiet Beach Resort & Spa in August 2012 as a Room Division Manager, and recently promoted to be an Executive Assistant Manager in April 2013. This new position is really challenging and at the same time exciting as it allows me to take a step back on the daily operations to focus more on all aspects of the management to understand a bigger picture where I must take more responsibilities in the group and be more involved in managing the resort. There is a lot of work that needs to be carried out this year, including OPERA, new PMS system installation and ISO certification. It is an honor to me that I have been trusted to be in charge of these important projects in this summer. In addition, I was recently graduated from the Thien Minh MINI MBA 2012 course. It was not only a successful and interesting experience but also a useful tool for me in pursuing my success in this new position. With the new mission together with my new role in the family of being a young father of a little girl since 2012, I find my upcoming path very exciting and yet awarding to embark. I trust Thien Minh to be the best Tourism and Hospitality group in Vietnam, and I am looking forward with excitement at all the new projects coming in the next few months! TESTIMONIALS XiengThong Palace “I stayed in Xieng Thong Palace for two nights in March but I really wish I stayed my whole four nights in this hotel. It is in the more historic and at the edge of the peninsula so you have proximity to both the Mekong and the Khan rivers. It is well located right by the temples so just from the front of the hotel, you can see the alms giving plus the sunsets and sunrises are just outside your door. The breakfast was fantastic. There are tables with a river to the view so peaceful and hypnotic that you can forget to eat. They serve both western and local food. The staff overall were very nice and polite but the star of the hotel was Buonavone (I hope I spelt her name correctly). She is one of the chefs but also hosts in the restaurant and she was so friendly and fun but also gave great information about the locale as her English was superb. The hotel may not have a pool due to the strict Unesco preservation laws and for me this was the only negative thing I can say about it but that is not their fault!” Naomi London

Buffalo Tours North Thailand tour - 7 May 2013 The tour leader during this tour was Martin Gerritsen and guide Yanyong. “I would like to thank you for this amazing holiday. The journey was superb from the beginning to the end. Martin explained everything well only next time I would like to have a little more info beforehand. Martin as tour leader, a lot of compliments! In one word, he was terrific, clear explanation.” Shared by Mr. Pim Van Melick, Customer Care Executive

Victoria Hoi An “Dear Team of the beautiful Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort, I trust my mail finds you all well. We spent 10 days at a Beachfront Villa in April and we really enjoyed the time staying in Hoi An. We promised especially Luan and Hiep from the restaurant service to mail a photo from my birthday. Please be so kind to forward these pictures to Luan and Hiep. We are very happy, that we met these two friendly ladies, making our time in your hotel very valuable.

Dear Luan, Dear Hiep, We won’t forget you for the next 100 years. All the best for you, the little baby boy of Luan and your families! All the best.” Andrew and Tina May 2013
