The martial environment, like many others in life in which teaching is among its essential seams, generates situations in human relations of a certain complexity. Starting with the fact that teaching something is always a difficult task.

It is said that Ouspensky, who was already an established author and writer, visited Gurdjief with the idea of studying with him.

In this state of things, a teacher gets entangled in teaching something to another person... What a mess! Especially when that something has to do with himself and his way of interacting with his environment. Obviously, studying macramé is not the same as studying a spiritual path. The questioning of one or the other makes a big difference in the relationship between teacher and student. However, any teaching relationship must be based on clear postulates and in my experience be placed in the right relationship of intensities in the right framework, so that it works without too many entanglements. That is, to do it in a pyramid of values.

At the base will be the student, the one who pays for, that is, the one whose degree of commitment does not go beyond this elementary exchange. Next we find the student, the one whose commitment and dedication have surpassed the elementary exchange, going beyond the merely pecuniary, to enter a new dimension. The student wants to learn, has understood what he is going to learn and is making an effort to do so.

At the top of the pyramid are the disciples, the higher the less, those who have made of the same path that their Master embraced, a personal path, and whose dedication and devotion to learning are beyond any question.

To mistake the position in which each teacher places his students within this scale, is the first mistake that a preceptor can make, as much for the much, as for the little. The axes of conditions are the result of the understanding and needs of each evolutionary moment of each person and as every Master who is a Master knows, the path of each student is something of his own, in which acting the free will we cannot and should not intervene.

Giving this freedom to each one, a teacher must, in fair measure, be able, at the same time, to have the freedom to teach or not, to intervene or not, and to what extent, in the lives of his pupils.

Behind all this complex situation full of variables, there is the nature of the knowledge to be transmitted and its own peculiarities, which may or may not facilitate its transmission, and of course, the degree of understanding of the same, which the teacher, instructor, pedagogue or mentor displays.

While it is true that everyone sees things from their own height, it is also true that they see them with the glasses they are wearing. None of us are neutral in anything and we shine with our nature, with our virtues and defects. Being aware of them will help both in the process of transmission and reception of all knowledge, but it will never annul the tendencies and inclinations of each one of us.

Whatever the case may be, at both points of the intersection, the teacher-student, student-teacher relationship is much more complex than it appears and will express much of the best and the worst that each part of it carries in the embrocation. With the passage of time the pumpkins will be adjusted in the cart, however, never miss the gratitude of the student, whatever their level in the pyramid, because nothing replaces what behind it all must shine, respect, and if possible, love, in a relationship that is so important, that Confucius said of it:

Chapter 1. COMPOSITION - STRUCTURE - SYSTEM

Composition (Latin Compositio - drawing, addition, connection) - harmonic relationship of individual parts of a human figure, the unity of elements of the architecture structure, color palette - sound range (Fig. 1.1), the principle of construction of the form of a literary work, the relationship of the arts in the ensemble, and even a group of people united by a common purpose.

As you can see, this word has a lot of meanings. In Roman law compositio meant reconciliation litigants.

Overall, that can be seen in all definitions of the composition - is the notion of sides, parts, forming a connection with their unity. Understood in this way the composition is used for a variety of real-life phenomena.

Basic concepts to describe a particular composition are "symmetry" and "rhythm".

Symmetry - mirror matching parts of an entity. It is characterized by alternating objects, actions, movements, etc.

The word "symmetry" ( Symmetria ) is of Greek origin and literally means proportionality. By symmetry in the broadest sense of the word understand all correct in the internal structure of the body or figure. Teaching about the different types of symmetry is a separate line of the geometry that is closely connected with many branches of science and technology, ranging from decorative painting and finishing the fine structure of matter.

Simplest forms of symmetry are three: mirror, central and rotational symmetry.

Mirror symmetry . It is well known to everyone from everyday observations. Mirror symmetry relates some object and its image with a flat mirror. Figure or body mirror symmetric if there is a plane that divides the figure (body) into two symmetrical parts (Fig. 1.2a).

Central symmetry - the symmetry of the shape relative to its center of symmetry. For example, two centrally symmetric triangles sides are equal in pairs and are a continuation of each other (Fig. 1.2b).

Rhythm - the alternation of any elements that happens to a certain sequence, frequency, etc. Rhythm peculiar motion which can be extended to infinity.

In addition to the symmetry and rhythm directly related to the creation of specific formulations have the following rules: body equilibrium, statics and dynamics, vertical and horizontal perspective, the golden section and stylistic unity.

Any object of reality we react immediately in space and time. Nothing is perceived by us only at the time or only in the space. The reality for us is four, where the fourth dimension - time.

There are three known types of temporary forms of wholeness.

The essence of the first type that we ourselves are on the move and do not know where this movement started and where to end, we just feel it as a uniform and continuous.

The structure, design, composition, system - words denoting related concepts that are seemingly different phenomena and sciences. In fact - it's a different kind of integrity, subject to the general laws of the location of parts of the whole:

• no part of the whole can not be removed and replaced without damage to the whole;

• parts can not be interchanged without affecting the whole;

• no new element can not be attached to a host without compromising the whole.

Construction - a structure whose elements are linked functionally. The integrity of the functions defined by the unity of its parts.

Structural elements, such as components and arrangements of machines, limbs and organs of a living organism, perform particular functions.

External similarity with the whole machine, of course, does not create a design and can even be antikonstruktivnym, ie false.

Design should be considered within the structure or composition, given the special nature of the relationship between the whole and its parts (functional as a system). The design is always multilayered.

The composition is a closed system with a fixed number of elements linked by a single meaning (intent).

Objectives, principles and methods of teaching

The principle of visibility is realized in three ways (methods):

• demonstration with an explanation;

• demonstration with simultaneous repetition;

• using visual aids, videos and other teaching aids.

Practices focused on kinesthetic sensations and suggest a pattern at different rates with varying degrees of complexity.

In addition, learning and teaching methods are used, for example, testing, mutual, insurance, etc.

The training is done fighting methodical sequence.

Classes are held in unarmed combat is similar to other studies on physical training and consist of preparatory, primary and final parts. Forms of organization of exercise can be very diverse. In martial arts, whether student, instructor or master, all train against a dangerous and deadly weapon, like the firearm. The only question is, how realistic is the training and how effective/realistic are the defense techniques? In my opinion, many do not distinguish between dojo and street fighting or the art and reality.

Before practicing with a firearm in the dojo, one must have certain knowledge, confidence and connection to this deadly weapon. For example, the knowledge of different models, how to use it properly, how to position it, aim it and shoot with it, how and where to carry it, understanding the weapon technology, evaluating the situations in case of conflict (before, during and after), awareness about the environment, the psychological factor and training, etc.

All this is extremely important, why? Because through that we have an acquisition we know, a correct and professional connection with the weapon and we can defend ourselves better, otherwise we will be attacked.

Those who teach martial arts and practice disarming against a threat with a gun must be able to distinguish that what they are doing is only art. These techniques are often diluted by traditional martial arts, in that these techniques only work in the tatami (dojo), but never work in reality/reality under psychological and physical stress. Disarming

When to disarm. Each combat situation and position are different, but they must always have the same motto: first, assess the situation and position as best as possible, second, remove the weapon from his body and move forward, so create pressure is very important, third, isolate and fourth, control!

1) When the weapon almost touches or has already touched the body.

2) The distance of the attack and the 5 different types of attack. So the frontal one, the one from the right and from the left or from behind and the worst one, the one on the ground.

3) Distance of the shooter.

Last the 4 rules of conflict (beforeduring - after) and are:

1) Absolutely always try to keep the gun away from your bodies.

Always choose the quickest way - find or search to get to the holder or to the hand grabbing the weapon.

1) If the weapon is out of the holder, always try to control the weapon.

2) Always be out of the line of fire or escape at all costs.

3) Always maintain a position of passive alert. The first and most dangerous factor you must avoid is surprise.

Important aspect

Before starting techniques and exercise programs, consult your doctor. Always practice shooting techniques, methods and exercise programs only under the guidance of an official, recognized and qualified instructor. Do not attempt this at home. Do not watch or practice shooting techniques unless you are of legal age.

Never train with a real weapon. Real weapons or hand-to-hand combat techniques involve unavoidable risk. Real weapons are dangerous. Serious injury and death can be caused by any real weapon and the use of hand-to-hand combat techniques. Unless you are willing and able to take responsibility for your actions, do not use real weapons or hand-to-hand combat techniques. Never train with a real firearm except in an official and recognized shooting range and always only under the guidance of an official, recognized and qualified shooting instructor and always follow all firearms safety rules.

When considering the use of a technique, be aware of what action may constitute "REASONABLE FORCE" and "EXCESSIVE FORCE". Consult your local law enforcement agency. Laws vary in each state/country. If you are a law enforcement officer, familiarize yourself with your agency's policies regarding the "USE OF FORCE." Use the information in this text at your own risk.

How Good People Do Evil

It is my sincere hope and desire to help others enrich the human experience maximizing one’s potential so that they may better carry the burdens of living as I strive to better understand the human self and seeking of truth, navigating my way through the intricate and complex maze of the human mind and spirit. Recently, I had a student flat out lie to me to tell me that she knew something when she clearly had absolutely no idea. When I pressed further, she was adamant even when given the opportunity to recant she would not. She had dug herself into a hole she could not think her way out of. She told me that she knew the movement of the technique in question when she really had no clue only to avoid getting in trouble. Then, when she had the opportunity to retract her statement she could not, once again out of fear that she might get into more trouble for not telling the truth.

This was not an isolated incident, and she is not a beginner, but have been training for almost six years who is also an assistant instructor. She knows fully well of her tendency to avoid conflict and allowing fear to overwhelm herself in stressful situations which was the primary issue she was working to resolve through her martial training.

Fear leads to a vicious downward spiral of self-destruction that sinks one deeper into the dark abyss, blurring the line which already is a thin veil of good and evil. A perfectly good person can be led to do wrong and unconsciously commit unimaginable acts of evil without ever knowing it purely for the sake of conformity and avoidance of conflict. It is so that good people will learn to rise, stand, and fight, if need be, for what is right even if it brings harm and suffering to the self for it is this virtue of selflessness and service to others that we practice Hwa Rang Do.

It is with this in mind that I gave a speech recently in one of my H.O.G.U. – Hwarangdo Online Global University classes:

The difference between agood student and a bad student is one who follows directions and the other who doesn't follow directions. Learning is essentially that easy, all it requires one to do is to pay attention and follow directions. However, it requires one more fundamental element, self-awareness. You must realize to what extent do you really understand or know what was taught or shown to you. This is where most students fail when they do not have a clear understanding of their own mental capacity and their emotional state.

In the martial arts this is even more exasperated by the fact that it is not just book learning but requires physical coordination, the mind / body connection, but it’s even more heightened due to the fear element of potentially getting hurt or hurting someone else. Then, on top of that you have a strict teacher who is critical of your every movement as well as your mental, emotionally state of being. And now, you are doomed as you only focus on avoiding reprimand and getting caught doing wrong, so rather than focusing on knowing the techniques clearly, you unconsciously focus on avoidance and denial of the truth allowing pretention, ignorance, and white lies to guard you from discipline and disappointment from your teacher. Who then is a great student, it is the one that goes home and does what? Homework. And, in doing the homework, the goal is not just to get the assignment finished. And that's another level of study. Not just to finish the

assignment, “Oh, I finished my homework. I'm done. Yeah!

What should be the question here? What is important? It should be understanding. Do I understand the material that I just studied? How well do I know it? So, understanding must be the ultimate question and goal. It is not for the other person’s approval or recognition, but for your own knowledge and betterment, but when you do not possess a strong sense of the self, selfworth, and value with strong convictions and desires, your identity is dictated by other’s perception of you. This is when we as human beings can be led to do wrong, lie, cheat, commit evil acts, only to please and be accepted by someone they admire and/or by the group they desire to belong to, out of conformity not desiring to stick out or create conflict rather than to think independently as they have no real strong perception, identity of the self as they lack strong foundation.

I keep saying to you that you have to understand the why? And this is fundamentally the issue. That's why you're all superficial. Clearly, you're only seeing things on the surface. All of you are generally superficial. See, what you think you're also not understanding is superficial. “Oh, as long as I get through the class, and I don't get in trouble.” That's so superficial. That's as much superficial as it is with somebody who has pretty looks and all they've done in their entire life is to put on makeup and got their way. They have no soul, they have no thought, no brain. Because they never needed to invest in anything other than in their looks. All their life they put on a nice dress, put on makeup, flirt with people and they got their way.

What makes you introspective? What makes you look deep within yourself? What? It’s hardship, tragedy, pain, suffering, depression, loneliness, all these things that you don't like and don’t want.

Those are the things that make you understand about your life, who you are, pondering on the existential dilemma, and this is what builds foundation.

It's the same in fighting and sparring. You only do forms, you only do the movements, then you are learning only superficially. You have no understanding of what those movements are used for, why they are done the way it is done. You have no understanding, no depth of knowledge. Once you start putting that into application, what happens? You get hurt. It doesn't work. You fail. You suffer. You endure pain. You endure embarrassment, shame. And then when you go through all that, this is what a stupid person does. They put it into application, they lose. They’re losing, again and again. They’re getting beat up, but being so afraid not to get beat up, their only focus is on avoiding it. So, they just do the same thing over and over again, so they continue losing, continue getting beaten up.

The only person that will end up changing is the one going home and sitting there not just licking their own wounds trying to forget what happened, but the one who recollects every movement, every mistake, every strike, suffering, enduring, and thinking. What did I do? Why did that happen? What did I do wrong? How did that happen? Why did I do it that way? Why didn’t I respond properly? Why did I react that way? Why did I do this? Why do I continue to lose and do the same thing repeatedly?

Without understanding why, you can't fix it; you can never fix it! You must know why. It's in the same way that I’m ending up paying over 1,000 bucks to fix my car because I can't fix it myself. I can't fix it because I don't know the why, I don’t know, so I can't fix it. So, I have to pay somebody else to fix it. That's exactly what happens to people.

That's why therapists make a lot of money. They don't really know any more than you. They just spent a lot of money and time reading books from other people who supposedly know more about the human condition, coming up with interesting theories and fancy names for them. They know books. They don't know you. You should know you better than anyone else, but you don't bother to take the time which you have plenty of. Oh, I know, everybody complains about not having enough time. That’s a bunch of crock of s***. You're with yourself 24/7, every second of your living days. How you spend that time, meaningfully or superficially, that's your

choice. And the only time that you really end up thinking deeply is when the s*** hits the fan, when everything goes to hell, when you’ve lost it all, when you’re down and out, on the brink of life and death, when you're depressed. And then what do you do when you’re depressed? You want to quickly get out of the depression as fast as you can. So, you do all forms of distraction. Call people that you haven’t seen or heard in ages to talk; go do work and clean stuff that you haven't done for years; go out and get drunk burying your sorrows in a bottle and dumping all your crap on your friends; and worst, taking drugs to forget it all. You do everything you can to distract yourself from the s*** you got to deal with when God “BAM” slapped you to wake you up and you're going, “Oh yeah, it doesn't hurt.” And you go on in your merry way. All the lessons you should be learning every time you come to class but instead of improving and bettering yourself, you end up doing knuckle push-ups. You didn't come to class to do knuckle push-ups! And you're going to continue doing knuckle push-ups, if you haven’t figured out, why the heck am I spending time doing knuckle push-ups?

I don't want to do knuckle push-ups. I don't want to get yelled at. I don't want to get in trouble you say. Tell me one person who likes to do knuckle push-ups; who likes to get yelled at; who likes to get in trouble? Who? Who? “Oh yeah, I go to Kuksanim’s (Grandmaster) class because I love getting yelled at. I love it. I live for it. Look at the callus on my knuckles. Look at that. I've done so many knuckle pushups. You can't even imagine. I lost count because every class I go, I do hundreds of them. Isn’t that great? I can do 1,000 knuckle push-ups. Isn’t that amazing?” Really?

That's the same idea as victimhood. Everybody, we all suffer, and everybody gets picked on. You think that life has been unfair? Injustice, unfairness is an equal opportunist. But it happens a lot more to people who are weak, quiet, timid, afraid, and stupid. And remember stupid is not who you are but what you do that defines whether you are or not. Then, you strut yourself in front of the world wearing your victimhood like a badge of courage.

The question of why is an infinite regression. You can ask why infinitely. And that is what it requires for understanding the truth, the truth about yourself. How deeply do you need to go? No one knows, only you can know by starting. Start asking yourself the question why? Why did I do that? Okay, you answered that and then why am I like that? And then you answer that one and then ask why? Why? Try this as an exercise, and that is what will get you to your core.

And fundamentally, I understand the worst. The bottom-line question of why? Why are human beings this way? Why am I this way? Because I’m messed up. That's why, everybody is. We're all sinful. No one is without sin. We're all corrupted, no one’s perfect. OK, so we're all corrupted. So, somebody's going to say, this is the nihilist kicking in, “Oh yeah, we're all messed up. So, let's just forget about everything or do anything. Let's just enjoy our messed upness.”

When you have been slapped by God, it is clearly then that you need to reflect about your life and change your course, as that is surely merciful compared to the

coming lightning bolt to strike you dead. Even with the humblest knuckle push-ups as discipline, it is then that you need to think deeply about what you are doing and how you’re going to better improve your situation, your condition. If you focus on not being slapped or not doing push-ups, then that is all you’ll end up doing because you haven’t learned the lesson. The slap, the push-ups is a result of your actions and without understanding the cause of your actions, you will never fix it.

If your desire, your goal is to truly better yourself then although you won’t like it, you will appreciate and be grateful for the slap, the knuckle push-ups and learn the lesson. However, if your desire is acceptance, conformity, and approval by others founded on fear, then you will hate getting slapped or the knuckle push-ups and will do everything you can to avoid it at all costs. You will hate God because he slaps and not to compare but only as explication you will hate your teacher, namely me, for making you do knuckle push-ups, and you will never learn the lesson, living in fear, avoiding being caught, and hiding in ignorance, wasting all your energy and effort on the superficial meaningless self, never delving into the truth of the heart. One is the way of weakness, cowardice, uncertainty, and the other is the way of strength, courage, faith, and the Hwarang.

What path you choose for your life lies with YOU, and it always did…

Even if the seminar was arranged on a short notice, it attracted an approximate of forty participants, many of them senior practitioners and instructors from various styles. Some participants drove several hours to reach the location, and we even had participants from Estonia and Israel.

This was Avi sensei’s second visit to Finland, and just like last time, the only thing we regret is that the visit was too brief. The seminar covered various common karate moves applied in various self-defense scenarios, joined with drills aimed at building functional spontaneity in a playful and safe way. Avi sensei also shared some of the wisdom he has accumulated over decades of martial arts training, and it was clear to all that his words come from experience.

Kauniaisten Karate

Kauniaisten Karate was founded in 1989. For the last twenty years the official style has been Koryu Uchinadi. Chief instructor is Jarmo Bäckman, (4th.dan). Ante Brännbacka (6th.dan kyoshi) also teaches there weekly. The club has about fifty active members.

Ante Brännbacka started learning Karate on 1985. The first years were mostly sports karate, but in the 90’s his focus was on Renshinkan Shorinjiryu karate under the guidance of sensei Yuji Matsuoi. In 1998 he met Hanshi Patrick McCarthy and little by little he began making the transition to Koryu Uchinadi. In 2003-2004 he trained full-time at the Sohonbu dojo in Brisbane, Australia, under the watchful eyes of Hanshi McCarthy. This teacher-student relationship continues to this day.

Even if karate has been the primary art, there was time alocated for other martial arts like Yamaneryu bojutsu, Tauramusoryu jujutsu and Aiki jujutsu, kobudo, escrima, BJJ, submission wrestling, boxing and Muay Thai.

Ante Brännbacka is the chief instructor of Koryu Uchinadi in Finland and the country representative for Hanshi Patrick McCarthy. Koryu Uchinadi can be practiced in nine different clubs all over the country.

I began learning with Hanshi Patrick McCarthy starting at 1985.Wefirst met in Japan while I was student and exposed to his advanced skills and knowledge in KU - Karate Uchi nadi under Sensei Kinjo Hiroshi and also in many other arts and teachers as Shotokan Kanazawa Sensei RIP and Katori Shinto Ryu Sugino Sensei RIP and even Professor Wally Jay RIP Small Circle Jiu- Jutsu.

Following Hanshi McCarthy journey and with his blessings I begin my last journey to Estonia and Finland

We landed at Republic of Estonia Capital Tallinn and drove to Tartu enjoying traveling with Andreas Kangur Sensei a law professor and a teacher under Hanshi McCarthy from Karate to Jiujutsu and MMA and with an amazing team in Estonia including active-duty military members contributing knowledge and valuable skills as well as amazing students who made all the travel and teaching into fun and learning.

The Tartu budo club has a special history. It was founded during the Soviet regime when Karate was illegal to teach still and was one of the first to encorportate both Shotokan and jujutsu. They were introduced to Hanshi McCarthy adding Koryu- uchinadi whose practices serves to fill the missing pieces in the martial puzzle. They branched into weapon and survival training and now drew near sensei on the road.

Here is something about the club: The Tartu Budo Club is not your usual karate club. It got started in the early 1990s when the Soviet occupation of Estonia was finally over and karate was finally legal to teach (yes – the Soviets had banned karate).

In karate terms the folks in Tartu had always been a bit mavericks – mixing shotokan with jujutsu made for an interesting blend so that when Finnish kyoshi Ante Brännbacka of koryu-uchinadi introduced the Estonian chief instructor Andreas to hanshi Patrick McCarthy, koryu-uchinadi and its functional practices were instantly recognized as “the missing piece”. The Tartu holds long summer training training camps where they also train weapon arts, survival skills and all kinds of paramilitary crafts not common in just a karate club. Here is another good example the law of attraction at work – after meeting through a common friend some 9 years ago, Avi Nardia sensei has been a mentor for Estonian instructors helping to glue the hand-to-hand skills, weapons arts and tactical tricks into a coherent practice.

I could not ignore Estonian traditions as dips in ice water and sauna long before the new era of Wim Hoff. A long standing traditional in Finland, Russia, Estonia and many of the Nordic countries. Ice water plunges prepare the body for the coming winter, This brings me to my first Karate studing Kyokushi and the legendary picture of Sensei Oyama on horse in winter training and I had to try following that as well riding horsesin snow and running in snow.

COMBAT ESKRIMA

Regularly I get questions about Combat Eskrima, as many know Combat Eskrima is a part of SCS (Stroeven Combat System). I have practiced many other eskrima styles in the past but still, I missed the pure self-defense in the other styles. Combat eskrima is based on the following principles SimpleRealistic- Individual. Combat eskrima was born out of the pure necessity of personal development and creativity. Now 40 years later I can say that Combat eskrima is being practiced worldwide and is becoming more and more known.

ATTACK IS THE BEST DEFENSE

In combat eskrima, there are no defenses everything is focused on attacking and intercepting your opponent. Everything is focused on taking out your opponent as quickly as possible. But of course, the beginning student starts by learning blocks and countering. After a few years of training the students will learn that your attack is your defense, and your defense is your attack, so to speak, everything is focused on the attack. For the readers, this may seem confusing but with the right training and more importantly the right teacher, you too will be able to apply this way of fighting and thinking today.

I regularly give seminars around the world together with my wife Leonora for the participants it is an excellent way to get acquainted with Combat Eskrima and to make them understand how effective combat eskrima is armed or unarmed all facets are covered. For all the students of other eskrima styles to see the difference in effectiveness no practicing drills that don't work and no training disarms without knowing. What we are doing in our seminars we do not only show you our style but also feel it, only in this way you can see effectiveness and judge if this also works in the real world.

In my opinion, this is what Doce Pares MultiStyle eskrima claimed: pure nonsense and fake eskrima. Why can I claim this for the simple reason that I know the so-called top people personally and they cannot substantiate these claims? In this way, they are trying to bring in students who believe this fantasy talk. To these Supreme Grandmasters - or masters I would say train realistically and don't turn eskrima into a show style with your title’s uniforms and other nonsense. Because that is often the problem in Filipino martial arts there are so many unnecessary drills and footwork that when the attack comes you don't know what to do. I think it is better to know 5 perfect disarm than 100 bad disarms.

SELF-DEFENSE IN ESKRIMA

Self-defense in Eskrima is still difficult for many teachers to teach. What I see in other eskrima styles is that armed fighting is practiced more than unarmed. In my experience and opinion, that is the wrong way of teaching Eskrima. Provided you offer Eskrima as self-defense of course! Yes, now many teachers will say in Filipino martial you learn to fight with weapons first and then unarmed fighting later. Yes, that is indeed true but in the old days when Eskrima was used in the war against the Spanish, you naturally preferred to have a weapon in your hands rather than unarmed for the simple reason that you are fighting an armed opponent. Now in this day and age, you are much more likely to engage in unarmed combat than armed combat. Plus, if you stab an opponent or knock them down with any other weapon there is a very good chance that you will end up in prison for a large number of years. Of course, there are exceptions if a favored person invades your home and threatens your family then different laws apply. Also, I advise my students not to carry knives in the worst-case scenario WE BORROW KNIVES TO OUR ENEMIES.

UNARMED COMBAT (PANGAMOT)

Pangamot is a very important part of my style. The reason is simple: everyone can start with pangamot, no need to learn how to fight with a stick and knife. Although I would advise training with weapons and unarmed to become a complete fighter. It is easy to learn a very high form of selfdefense. Training methods I have developed are applicable in most situations and are part of the principal action-reaction so I would say come to my seminar and I will show you how my pangamot works against unarmed or armed opponents.

DRILLS - DISARMS IN PHILIPPINE MARTIAL ARTS

In Eskrima are countless drills and disarms let's talk about the drills first. Most drills are made for timing -coordination, and speed at least that is always what most teachers say. I believe that practicing a drill should add value to your overall development as an eskrimador. Then I am not only thinking about timing, rhythm, and coordination (I can also do when I hit a tennis ball with a stick) but more about body mechanics, tactical movement, speed, and especially understanding why am I doing this drill, what is the added value for this drill and how can I apply this drill in self-defense or at least a part of the movement in my other theory of other drills think about this during your next training.

DISARMS

When disarming I always think of SGM Cacoy Canete he always said to me when you disarm someone always do it with a smile!

Disarming is always nice to see, and it looks so easy but in practice, it is not so easy. Or is it if you listen to me? An attacker does not stand still with his stick and wait for you to disarm not an attacker withdraws his stick and strikes again immediately. Ok first of all, in reality, I don't make contact with the stick, but I do make contact with your head or some other limb for all, as the first target is the head is the computer that controls the body so if I turn that off and you fall I have disarmed your stick as well. This is my thought process with disarms as soon as I attack you and disable you are also disarmed. Of course, you can disarm in other ways as well but then you must have special insights that put you in the position to disarm so that means your hand-eye coordination has to be more than welldeveloped plus you have to be a fighter and be willing to also cash in.

I want to end this article with the following, I am a big fan of Filipino martial arts and martial arts. I have been training in FMA for over 40 years and have seen many grandmasters at work some were bad, and some were very good. And yes, I am quite critical in the way I write and I know I am not loved by everyone but I am who I am and I can only say ACTION TELLS THE TRUTH!

Carlos Garcia, founder Master of Kempo Aiki-Jutsu, 8th Dan Chinese Hawaiian Kenpo awarded by G.M. Jack Shamburger, and 2nd Dan Aikido Aikikikai presents his second work, which aims to show the importance of traditional training from the base, and then apply them to self-defense techniques, even with modifications seeking greater efficiency and forcefulness when defending ourselves. We start with a static work, purely basic, of Kihon, where the partners work a Tsuki attack and basic blocks such as Shoto Uke, Uchi Uke, Age Uke an d Gedan Barae, to apply them later in selfdefense techniques. The training begins with pure Kihon, static work that provides stability, strengthens postures and calms the mind. The hardening also teaches that the body feels pain when it receives blows, but also when it hits, so we learn to manage it and not to paralyze the mind in a real situation of confrontation. In a second section, we will show Aikido techniques, executed in the traditional way, Nikkyo, Sankyo, Kote Gaeshi, Shiho Nage, Irimi Nage. Kajukenbo is an eclectic and versatile system that was born as a useful and credible tool for self-defense in modern times, it is not a martial art of sports or traditional profile and therefore its learning is suitable for all types of people whatever their condition and in which there is only one premise according to its creator Sijo Emperado. Hagumo (Shizen) tradition: Japan's best kept secret

Little has been made clear by historians about the Hagumo culture known to the Yamato as the Shizen, "the naturals". It is a culture of alluvium, made from different indigenous tribes of the Japanese Islands, which once invaded by the Yamato from Southeast Asia, were pushed towards the island of Hokkaido, to the North and organized around four mythical villages, Yabu, Kawa, Tayo and Yama.

What has come down to us orally about their history as a people has been infinitely less than what has survived of their culture. We know from historians such as Takeo Nagaki that the original villages of this culture were probably located in the area of present-day Sapporo during the Kamakura era (1192-1333).

At least two complete destructions of the villages (military defeats) by the Yamato invaders are known from oral tradition. However the Shizen culture survived to the present day, largely probably through the hands of the Shizen themselves, who being then mixed with the Japanese, acting as spies and protectors of their people, remained infiltrated into positions of power and influence when both defeats took place.

f the historiography is sparse in details about this culture, nevertheless its cultural legacy is cyclopean and has reached our days in a secret and oral way through the Shizen immigrants who arrived in Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Hagumo were formed by tribes of Caucasian race, with abundant hair and beards. Of the ancient cultures of the indigenous people of the islands that make up modern Japan, the best known is the Ainu (or Aino), which has its own language, but lacks, for example, its own writing. The Hagumo culture, on the other hand, has bequeathed us three distinct forms of writing. This simple factor clearly shows the difference and the depth of their knowledge, as well as the strength of their idiosyncrasy compared to the Aino culture.

The Aino survived the plundering, acculturation and subjugation of the Yamato, living through episodes, even in the 20th century, of the holocaust. The Aino, however, maintain certain traditions, as well as their language, a bit like the American Indians, much more a sentimental remnant of what they were than anything else, since their way of life as hunter-gatherers was intentionally and absolutely destroyed by the Japanese. Even today salmon fishing in their rivers, the basis of their way of life in the harsh winter days, is still forbidden or state-sponsored. The Aino had no concept of property so the expropriation of their land given to Japanese immigrants at the beginning of the last century was a disaster in their way of life. Humiliated and forced to forget their language, they were forced into a devastating integration. Today, the Japanese government recognizes this minority and has passed laws attempting to protect their heritage.

Unlike the Aino, the Hagumo (Shizen) culture reached high levels of sophistication over the centuries, but even in its beginnings it showed an unsuspected vigor and a marked personality. According to their oral traditions, the Hagumo did not define themselves on the basis of any racial trait, but rather on the basis of culture. This differentiation was probably the basis of their great success in perpetuating themselves over time. The Hagumo were the breakers of many indigenous cultures, organized in the face of the invader, and knew, at least at the beginning, how to place a superior integrating factor, their culture, before an inferior one, the race, the clan or

the tribe. On the other hand, the defensive purpose established at its foundation, will definitely mark its closed and secret character from that moment on.

Just like the American Indians, any person could become part of the people, provided that after a period of trial and coexistence, he learned their customs and integrated them into his life. This period was extended in ancient times in a certain number of "moons" that would correspond to three years in our measure. After this period, they were initiated into their rites through a ceremony known in their language as ashakoro (in their language: The big, which joins big, with the small material, through reason). From that moment on they were considered part of the Shizen people and initiated in their secrets and in the cult of Tengu (dogs of god), a spiritual tradition known in their language as e-bunto (the great common force), in Japanese Ochikara.

The word Tengu probably had similarities with other shamanic traditions from Mongolia (see Tengri cult) and with origins in ancient cultures existing since the Neolithic, as they have common traits with other ancient cultures of China, Mongolia and Tibet.

Secrecy as a defensive rule, has kept a whole huge and grandiose culture hidden from the eyes of mankind. The secret, which marks its idiosyncrasy, permeates its foundational DNA with such force, that only through it and with immeasurable vigor and strength, has allowed it to survive all these centuries through families, shamans (Miryoku) and the walking priests known as Kotoma Tonbo (wandering monks known as dragonflies andarinas).

The secret, which had its meaning in the defense of the heirs of that tradition, first, against invaders far superior in numbers and military forces, and then, as a vehicle of protection among the Hagumo clusters reborn in the diaspora, may however become its ultimate undoing in modern times. Young people and Shizen families inserted in modern societies, as it happens with other traditional cultures, are more in tune with modern interests and ways of life than with their beautiful ancient traditions. On the other hand, the great masters who preceded us, each one of them a living library of the Shizen tradition, have been disappearing one by one and their legacy rests in very few hands.

Today's world lives immersed in the centrifugal force imposed by the single thought and although there is resistance to the loss of identity with the resurgence of patriotism, localism and nationalism, the truth is that the modern day is devouring all true distinction, relieving to folklore, what once was wisdom to face real obstacles, daily life and experiences, facing the mysteries of existence. Necessity is the mother of change and when it comes into play, it demolishes everything around it and nothing stops it. This is as true in cultures as it is in individuals.

The depth and particularity of the Shizen culture is so extraordinary and exists so vividly in our spiritual daily life that we have pledged our efforts and dedication to preserve it through its transmission. This implies an exceptional turn of events that can only be understood within the framework of the extraordinary situation.

In any case, whether or not we are capable of carrying out this project, just as in human life, in the life of cultures, two are the most important and grandiose moments: birth and death. The birth, because it defines a whole trajectory, like an arrow, that pointing to its target, predefines its

trajectory, and the death, because in it resolves the culmination and the maximum tension of its purpose. After every death, there is only the rebirth to a different plane and therefore, the transcendence to a more subtle vibratory plane and necessarily, therefore, superior.

The extraordinary number of extreme, disproportionate and borderline transgressions and events that led up to the moment I was named "eternal successor" (kokeisha in Japanese, Koromi in Shizengo) to the traditions of the village of Kawa in our lineage, would be enough to write a whole book by itself, but they are only a small drop of time in the long history of the Hagumo people. No individual is important outside the framework of his or her reality and time, but we are all decisive in the face of the pressures of destiny. My teacher Joho Jordan Augusto in the first place, and I, we are committed to this crusade, time will tell what we were able to do and how.

The saying goes that, space and time in between, everything is seen in its opposite. Many years ago I wrote

that in the modern and paradoxical times of the millenarian totus revolutum, the best of the East would be seen in the West and vice versa. Capitalism is reaching extreme heights of perfection of its essence in China, while the best of the East, from the Dalai Lama to Mother Teresa of Calcutta (who was Albanian), will be seen in the West. I have no Shizen blood, nor Japanese. In the end, as in the beginning, none of that is important, as it was not in the beginning. The spiritual prevails over the material, because in the extreme times we live in, everything reaches its limits and is exposed defragmented. Times in which nothing can be preserved for tomorrow, because tomorrow has already arrived and the future shrinks; times of the Kali Yuga in the Hindu tradition, of apocalypse in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and apocalypse means destruction by fire... Not everything is negative in it,

because fire is also light, elucidation of the contained energy and transfiguration of matter, towards a state of pure energy.

To try to artificially maintain the past, or to turn cultures as interesting as that of the Hagumo into museum pieces, would be to kill their true value, and at a time when lost humanity is searching for paths and orientations that give direction, meaning and transcendence to its existence, it would also be a waste. It is not about artificially sustaining the forms that made it what it was, but to fit its greatness in the superior parameters that it reached as a culture with a spiritual dimension whose value is eternal; eternal, for the eternal questions of man, about his identity as a spiritual being and the reasons and mysteries that underlie his experiences in this material plane.

Subsidized cultures, like artificially maintained endangered species, decline inexorably. So when you try to destroy something, it is best to protect it artificially, because ease leads inexorably to difficulty. It is not about

that, as it is not about betraying its essence by adapting it, under accommodating premises, to the circumstantial conveniences of those who approach it today.

Keeping a culture alive is something that transcends the possibilities of one or two individuals, and I am not under

any illusions. Perhaps our endeavor and purpose will be in vain, since everything that begins at some point ends, but if it must be so, let it be with a "grand finale", in which the greatness of this brave and deeply spiritual culture, which navigated with courage in consciential Universes in which few have ventured, shines with all its strength.

If, on the other hand, we manage to pass the baton to a new generation, may it be better than the previous ones, and without losing the nobility and essence of what characterized this culture, keeping its idiosyncrasy alive, may they know how to renew the life of the Hagumo, in a new context that is irremediably different and as distant in time as in space, finding that which is Universal and great vibrates in its essence, with a unique and extraordinary strength and power.

The secret of secrets will remain only available to those who have to be part of it, and who like us want to travel in this unique and peculiar world; nothing will be betrayed in this particular and not only because it is part of the

essence of its nature as a culture, but because it is part of any authentic path that exceeds normality. Everything is a matter of degrees in this Universe and in every pyramid there are few stones at the top and many at the bottom; it is also known that quantity kills quality.

Myths and Shizen culture

When we think of myths, our immediate reference in the West are those of the Greco-Latin culture, but these were common to all ancient peoples with sophisticated cultures, peoples who knew how to use stories to define and explain the ineffable.

The very idea of mythology has diverse readings. From those who consider it little more than a collection of tales, legends and folklore, to those who link it to the foundations of a religion. Carl J. Jung was able to find in them a middle way, as an emerging expression of the occult knowledge inscribed in the collective unconscious of a culture and therefore of humanity as a whole.

But it would be a mistake to read the mythologies of the Shizen people through a vision limited by only these three approaches. The Hagumo mythology, although it uses the story to transmit information about the order of the Universe, has an absolutely practical substratum, which was used by its priests and priestesses in certain processes of alteration of energetic and tension fields, and through them, to influence what we know as reality.

Nor were these practices distinctive to the Hagumo. Many ancient peoples such as the Celts, Egyptians, African cultures, etc... had similar practices in their cultures. To label them as "magic" would in a way denigrate their true nature and essence. However, today quantum physics allows us to approach them with another look, a look capable of giving meaning and explanation to what otherwise, the ignorant and the arrogant, simply prefer to deny, that is, the mysterious access to that framework through which the interweaving of the Universe mysteriously exists and expresses itself.

There are, however, unique peculiarities in the way in which the Hagumo undertook their readings of the occult; and I am not referring to the logical cultural peculiarities resulting from their idiosyncrasy, with which they expressed themselves in their mythologies, but in their own exceptional characteristic used when reading the meaning of their divinities as their fractals, both in energy and in tension.

They considered that everything in the Universe was made up of particles of polarized vibrating energy, and that this could manifest in two forms, through the material world in the form of BUNZA tension, or through the spiritual world, in the form of BUNTO energy. While energy always moves in spirals, possessing a beginning and an end, tension comes from the equivalent meeting of two equivalent points, generating a helical oscillatory pattern, determined at a frequency. Energy feeds tension, and tension feeds energy, thus the intricate interplay of the subtle or spiritual world interacts with the material.

Like all sacred information of antiquity, these stories possessed functional keys, which were only learned from

Master to disciple, framed in a body of knowledge known in their language as e-bunto, literally "the great energy" or "the energy that is common to all".

The Hagumo culture, like other ancient cultures, was so fond of secrecy that they left no written texts, although they possessed three different forms of writing, depending on the period. The whole immense deposit of information passed from master to pupil wrapped in secrecy, always through a chosen few, and thus, in an absolutely incredible and unsuspected way, it has managed to reach our days.

However, perhaps it is the advent of modernity and the imposition of the single thought, typical of globalization in our days, the reason to put an end to a culture as rich and vast as few, if we are not able to preserve and contextualize it in this new paradigm.

Its functionality as protector of the genetic heirs of the same, is being diluted, because every day more and more, the new generations, subscribe to new values and reduce to quasi folkloric cults, a sublime universe of knowledge, experience and wisdom. With the disappearance of its greatest exponents, authentic treasures and each one of them true guarantors of its conservation, a whole library of wisdom and experience has disappeared, leaving its knowledge in the hands of very few.

The organization chart of knowledge within the e-bunto is organized as a set of Russian dolls, which in the first instance distinguishes the Saoto (literally "outsider"), that is, the foreigner, the "non-initiate", from the initiate (Saota). These, through the years, must "transit" through the realms of all the Tengu, until they reach the realm of Do no Tengu, at which time they receive graduation as Joho (in Japanese, Shidoshi).

This passage, although common to all initiates, did not imply, however, the complete incorporation of the initiate into occult knowledge. Most Hagumo participated in the culture, its traditions, customs and festivities, but only an elite group of hierophants, known as Miryoku, in the case of men, and Minikui, in the case of women, had access to the knowledge and secrets of the e-bunto.

Among the Miryoku, and the Minikui, only a small group formed an elite known as "dragonflies andarinas" or Kotoma Tonbo. Dragonflies in the sense that they were born and died every day, as they were generally itinerant monks who did not settle permanently in one place.

Considered untouchable, their knowledge was the last line of defense of the Shizen culture and people. There were also two other initiation ceremonies among them, performed every two years after their initiation as Tonbo, ceremonies of presentation to a certain type of forces.

In the last century a parallel line was generated that distinguished two groups among its people: The Terazo (luminous), and the Kurai (dark), the latter being known as "the black angels", protectors of the group and whose formulations and knowledge were also a world apart within the Shizen.

Origins of Tengu

The word Tengu, translated from Japanese as "dogs of god", has a very different meaning for the Hagumo people than the one attributed by the Japanese culture. This is probably due to the Hagumo's own secrecy, that even when their original villages were destroyed and they were already mixed with the Japanese, they continued to keep their knowledge and traditions secret. However, cultural contaminations are always impossible to avoid and both sides were influenced in this dynamic of coexistence.

Japanese Shintoism gave Tengu a meaning different from that of the e-bunto, taking one of them, Karassu Tengu, the half-crow, half-man Tengu (Karassu is "crow" in Japanese) and its most elementary iconography, as a reference to end up reducing all other Tengu in general, under this confusing image. The beak of the crow becomes in some representations a long nose, but keeps the red color of the face as a reference, (one of the colors next to the black of this Tengu, according to the Hagumo tradition).

Some scholars maintain that it was the apparitions of spirits of dead Jesuits in Japan (big noses are a characteristic with which the Japanese identify all Westerners), which may have contributed to these confusions.

Here and there also appear quotations of another Tengu, in this case Shojobu Tengu, as "Okane Tengu" in Japanese, the "Tengu of money". It was inevitable that the fame of some Miryoku and Minikui transcended the sphere of the Hagumo families and not a few of them rendered services to the Japanese aristocracy, and even to the Shogun himself.

Despite being accustomed to keeping their secrets, little transcended Tengu and his cult, but obviously there was an influence on Japanese culture from this coexistence. When one understands all the richness of the Hagumo culture regarding Tengu, it is easy to conclude on which side lies the true origin of everything related to Tengu and where, on the contrary, the contamination took place.

Tengu for the Hagumo speaks of a series of divinities, which are nothing but fractal representations of the totality of all that exists. They are in this sense "celestial" or "god" dogs, insofar as they are just as faithful as a canid to the one principle itself, called in Japanese Kamissama, in Hagumo language, Kamonon.

There are obvious similarities with the term Tengri of Mongolian origin, which has survived in Turkish and has concomitances in Chinese with a divinity called Tiāngǒu. We do not possess certainties regarding the origins of the term, but we can infer a relationship between the culture and the most ancient Mongolian shamanism and Hagumo. It is not for nothing that the first prehistoric populations that reached the islands of Japan did so by crossing the Behring Strait. These first inhabitants are at the base of the genetic origins of the Hagumo, although their culture as such, is organized after the invasion of the Yamato, an ethnic group from Southeast Asia and that with their arrival, forced the creation of this group of refugees from these invasions, on the island of Hokkaido.

According to a colleague of the time of Takeo Nagaki, after their name Hagumo they were also called RONGU. The Japanese often cited them as SHIZEN JIN, SHIZEN MONO, SHIZENBITO, or SHIZEN SHA. In Shizengo, SHIZEN SAO (Shizen people).

Although there were differences in the language of each of the villages, they all practiced the same Tengu worship. Our lineage comes from Kawa; in Rangugo or Shizengo, the Kawa village, they say Kawazuki Togo, although the Miryoku who trained my teacher, Jordan Augusto, Yamori, was Shiniyuke Tazuo Sensei, who came from Yabu, which has allowed us to have a broader knowledge of their sacred traditions.

Tengu and the Hagumo cosmogony

The division of the whole into nine phases or fractals is the basis of the Hagumo cosmogony. These nine fractals respond to distinctive natures of their own, specific vibratory phases, which possess an eternal nature, neither evolving nor devolving. Everything in the Universe possesses a nature capable of being framed in any of these fractals, and the relationships between them possess an intrinsic order and characteristic tendencies, which can be learned and understood. It is these nine fractals that they called Tengu.

The understanding of how Tengu act through Michi no Ki, the twelve paths and how these energies manifest through conjunctions of forces that predetermine events of a specific nature linked to each Tengu (Oni Shisha or "messengers of Oni") are the primary basis that make up the e-bunto. ONI studies are the other factor that makes up the basis of this knowledge.

Normally training as a Joho, Japanese for Shidoshi, normally takes 17 years. Being such a deeply rooted path,

it possesses an unsuspected personality and strength, which especially today contrasts with the superficiality of modern culture.

The fact that it has been preserved to this day in such a complete form is an anthropological miracle. Cultures with such ancient roots have been absorbed or colonized, and the processes of acculturation and mixing have destroyed them all over the world. We can affirm that it is practically a unique case and one of the most unknown and ancient revelations of the culture of Japan that exist.

To access the Hagumo culture is to travel in time and space to the origins of a primordial Japan, an immersion in the mysterious forests of Hokkaido, where the first inhabitants of Japan took refuge. Their philosophy and mysterious knowledge influenced Japanese culture in the following centuries, lending it part of that unfathomable depth that even today they do not know where it came from.

Martial masters such as Ueshiba, the creator of Aikido, spoke of Tengu in a mysterious way, as beings who in dreams taught them kata and even the use of weapons such as the Naginata.

In Japan the e-bunto is often referred to as Ochikara (strength). The members of this culture were related to Karassu Tengu and this influence has reached today even in the collective imagination through movies (see the version of the 47 Samurai with Keanu Reeves) and even Manga.

Their martial knowledge, included under the common heading of Bugei or War Arts, includes from their own ancient forms to those that they incorporated in their stage mixed with the Yamato. They are characterized by their extreme forcefulness some, and by their sophistication others; from the Koppojutsu, to the Aiki Ju Jutsu typical of the aristocracy in its Japanese stage, the mastery of all weapons, from archery to the Katana, Yari, Naginata, shuriken, etc ... The lineage of Ogawa Ha, has left vivid samples of these skills through Shidoshi Jordan Augusto its greatest exponent today.

His greatest legacy, however, comes from the hidden knowledge of his shamans, a universe of knowledge that arises from the need in the origins of its eventful history.

In Hokkaido, where the palpitation of telluric forces and its volcanoes create lagoons of hot springs, the home of the heron, the bear and the salmon, of icy winters and lush bamboo forests, a wandering culture arose, which miraculously has kept to this day, some of the deepest secrets that contaminated the culture of Japan. A culture that resurfaces today leaving us a gift of extraordinary wisdom, the e-bunto.

To act psychophysically centered we have to be oneself with the movement. Movement has a diastolic and a systolic phase. If we wish to act centered, we must adapt the phases of our breathing to those of the movement, taking energy and relaxing ourselves during inspiration and projecting strength and speed during the contraction necessary to expel the residual air to the maximum. Inspiration, as a general rule, takes place through the nose. The expiration through the mouth, although sometimes nose and mouth are used together in different proportions. Breathing in through the mouth as a habit, without action or intention "forcing" us to do so, results in dangerous pulmonary hyperventilation which, due to the appearance of convulsion and crying in the last phase of the process, has been opportunely sold as therapeutic. Let us follow the process:

- Pulmonary hyperventilation generates a loss of carbon dioxide (CO2).

- This loss, CO2 being acidic, modifies the activity of calcium in the blood.

- The resulting tetany (apparent hypocalcemia) generates convulsions, muscle contraction and even pseudo-epileptic spasms, suffering and crying.

It is very dangerous to use the normal consequences of a metabolic process as an expression of a therapeutic emotional catharsis.

Our nasal appendages have, among other missions, that of allowing us to exercise our sense of smell: to smell, and, in order to smell, it is necessary to inhale the air, in which the chemical compounds that generate the odor are dissolved, and to deduce from this the data that will bring us closer to or move us away from the emitting source, be it animal, person or thing.

The air is inhaled through the nose in order to filter the air of contaminating particles, to warm it before it reaches the lungs and to compensate the energetic expenditure of the action.

The simultaneous, isolated or alternative use of the nostrils is in turn determined by the mobilization of one or both sides of the body and the time of day.

When in the energetic requirement of the movement one of the two lateral sides is more important: tennis, fencing, ..., the inspiration will be more intense through the nostril corresponding to the part of the body which supports the greater energetic demand. This causes structural, muscular and emotional decompensations. For example: a right-handed tennis player, by strengthening more the right part of his body, will stimulate the left lobe of his brain, the conscious part, tending to be, consequently, more calculating, cold and technical than a left-handed tennis player. The lefthanded tennis player, by developing more the left lateral part of his body and the right lobe of his brain, the seat of the unconscious, will be more intuitive, temperamental and emotional.

As for the expulsion of air through the mouth, it is determined by the need to use the maximum energy in the shortest interval of time. Let us remember that in the inspiration we breathe in energy, we dilate, while in the expiration we regenerate and/or use this energy for the realization of the effort. Consequently, the faster and more intense the expulsion of air, the greater the muscular contraction, the greater the energetic mobilization and the greater the effort we are able to make per unit of time. Hence the attack and defense cry of the martial arts practitioner, the kiai. Also the less specific cry of the weightlifter, who, prior to the final effort, prepares himself, settles firmly on the ground, inhales slowly and deeply to take the maximum energy and then violently and quickly expels the air in the last part of the lift. Since the diameter of the throat is much greater than the sum of the two nostrils, it is much more suitable to expel air through the mouth than through the nose, whenever, as in gymnastics and sports in general, a great effort is required in a short space of time.

SNORING AND YAWNING

The link between the phases of respiration and emotions is extremely significant. Snoring implies, simultaneously, two actions with negative effects on the psychophysical balance. On the one hand, when breathing through the mouth and nose is carried out simultaneously, the flow of oxygen in the blood is considerably increased, activating metabolic processes and producing an excessive consumption of calcium. In other words, energy losses and ionic imbalances are caused, which have a negative effect on the restorative and energizing sleep. On the other side are the disorders derived from mouth breathing, such as: pharyngitis, laryngitis, hand tremor, etc ....

Snoring, in turn, produces, during inspiration, an intense vibration, by suction, on the roof of the palate of the mouth. This anomalous vibration, opposite to that caused by mantras or chanting during expiration, is transmitted to the pineal gland (pituitary), disturbing it energetically and promoting intense unconscious experiences, nightmares and disturbing dreams, so it is common to hear the sleeper articulate phrases and words between his snoring. Snoring is accompanied by excessive energy expenditure and high subconscious activity, so that, in addition to the possible somatic disorders mentioned above, sleep loses part of its physical and psychological regenerative purpose. Also of that of data elaboration and harmonization of the conscious and unconscious life, of the psychophysical rest that is so essential for the human being. It is probable that, from the intuition of all this phenomenology, comes that phrase of the popular saying: "he who snores a lot lives less."

"Mental control can succeed in setting the times of inspiration, retention and expiration that we desire, but, without adequate muscular support, it will perform incorrectly and psychophysically unbalanced the mechanism of respiration."

Yawning, when we are tired and want to sleep, and also when we wake up, is a clear expression, at a corporal level, of the psychic meaning of breathing. When yawning, we lengthen the inspiration and we relax as much as possible to stimulate the expiration. In this way we facilitate the retention of energy in the lower part of the body, in the first three chakras, regenerating the energetic wear or stimulating its mobilization. At the same time, yawning is a graphic way of closing in on oneself, of isolating oneself from the external environment by means of the accentuated and relaxed muscular contraction involved in the expiration phase.

Yawning is a message of rupture and also of reconnection with the environment: of isolation and use of energy to revitalize ourselves; of reconnecting with ourselves through rest and sleep; and of starting up again, when yawning connects us again with the external environment after resting.

Breathing is the regenerating source of the vital energy that flows between the vertical polarity of the upper and lower part of the spine, and between the horizontal polarity of the right (rational consciousness) and left (unconscious) sides of the human being. (From this evidence derive such apparently unrelated consequences as the sedative effect that is generated when making the sign of the cross; made with the right hand initially open on the vertical middle plane of the body, as if it were a guard position, and its use as a symbol of peace and harmony).

Breathing is influenced by:

THE BODY. Muscular structure of the back and abdominal belt, as well as possible physiological and neurological disturbances.

THE MIND. Functioning of the central nervous system, thought and intention in action.

THE EMOTIONS. Altered psychophysical state generated by the specific emotions of the situation experienced at that moment: fears, desires, hatreds, loves, as well as the emotional blockages that are catalyzed by unconscious traumatic memories.

THE SPIRIT. The evolutionary degree of consciousness and awareness of the person in front of the lived situation. There are "like" four respiratory levels, and, in reality, only one global breathing that unites them, in such a way that each one of them affects the others and is modified by them to a greater or lesser extent.

Physical exercise can develop an impressive abdominal and thoracic musculature, achieve a considerable air intake capacity, and yet realize a psychophysically unbalanced breathing mechanism.

The mental control can achieve to fix the times of inspiration, retention and exhalation that we wish, but, without an adequate muscular support, it will perform in an incorrect and psychophysically unbalanced way the breathing mechanism. Something similar happens with the emotional blockages and the incorrect attitude towards existence.

Breathing will be balanced when:

- The body is balanced in masses, volumes, rhythms and centers.

- The mind is absorbed by action.

- The emotional blockages "resolved" and the right attitude.

The rest is pure omnipotent delirium and self-deception.

To an unbalanced body it happens as to a broken bellows: It takes little air, and breathes even less, however considerable the efforts and stubbornness that we use in the effort.

To strengthen the body in a balanced way; to focus the mind and attention on action; to resolve emotional blockages and maintain a correct attitude, is the only way that will provide us with an abdominal breathing that is psychophysically harmonious and consonant with the pulse of Nature and existence. This is the breathing of martial arts and Zen. The expiration phase is longer than the inspiration phase.

Arnold Sports Festival

Columbus, Ohio USA. March 2-5, 2023

On Thursday March 2, 2023 Arnold Sports Festival, the largest multisports event in the nation returned to Ohio in full force. After 3 years of Covid-19 delays and cancelation the festival had a massive traffic at the Greater Columbus Convention Center where Arnold Schwarzenegger won the title as Mr. Olympia in 1968. More than 180,000 spectators visited the International Expo including 10,000 athletes and over 200 sports companies.

Eliminations started on Thursday March 2, 2023 of over 60 sports from over 80 nations competing in body building, martial arts, boxing, wrestling, fitness, weight lifting, classic physique, world strongman classic, and many more competitions. With the passing of Grand Master Jhoon P. Choi two years ago the martial arts sports division did not include all the elaborate and elevation of its prestige and glory as it did in past years. However, the Arnold Battle of Columbus Martial Arts World Games took place this year at Ohio State Expo Center with participants celebrating one of martial arts community and unity event that included competitions in forms, fighting, self defense that started on March 3rd with seminars from grand masters in a diversity of Martial Arts styles such as, Hapkido, Wing Chun, Karate, Tang So Do, Tai Chi, Kong Fu, etc., lead by Grand Masters

Scott Schwab, Tom Callahan, Sen Gao, Jeff Radcliffe, Peter Jang and many more.

The usual 46th Annual Bruce Lee and Legends of the Martial Arts Hall of Honor ceremony took place on Friday Night. I had the pleasure of attending and meeting with all participants and grand masters. It was an honor to meet Mrs. Choi and give her my support and well wishes for the loss of her husband GM Jhoon P Choi whom I had a special connection with from the moment I met him 24 years ago when I was invited to do a breaking and self defense demo for Arnold Schwarzenegger among other great leaders of the martial arts and thousands of spectators. There and then the Arnold wanted to check my Guinness World Records glass breaking stunts.

Saturday morning was the busiest day of the Arnold Sports Classic event with thousands of spectators crowding the entire Greater Columbus Convention Center. The day commenced with multiple championships taking place on a very large stage. By noon I had the pleasure of attending the VIP International Sports Hall of Fame. This marked the 12th Anniversary Induction in conjunction with the Arnold Sports Festival hosted by multi talented Dr. Robert Goldman. A honorable man who has been a great supporter of the Martial Arts community, body builders, movie productions, chairman of world anti-age medical services worldwide, Guinness World Records Holder, author of many medical books and a sponsor of several other programs to support and elevate talented individuals and organizations.

The International Sports Hall of Fame honors individual sports athlete for their phenomenal championships and achievements including charitable endeavors after their retirement from sports. These athletes are carefully selected and are role models for the young and upcoming brilliant athletes. Each year Dr. Bob recognize five outstanding athletes with a preview of their bio in presence of the Arnold, several media outlets and televised on live broadcast including selected VIP audience. Each nominee receives a gold medal, a jacket and certificate presented specially by Dr. Goldman. Inductees for the Class of 2023 are:

• Hafthor Bjornson, 30 time Professional Strongman Champion, 3 time Arnold Classic World Strongest Man Champion. I personally witnessed when he broke the world record by lifting 1065 lbs., it was one of my most memorable moments of the Arnold Sports Classic event. He currently holds the strongman world record in the deadlift with a pull of 501 kilograms (1,104 pounds), which he accomplished in 2020. Hafthor, an actor in his own rights and was casted as Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane on Game of Thrones television series.

• Kayla Harrison, 2 time Judo Gold Medalist and 2 time Professional Fighters League Women’s World Lightweight Champion. Harrison has a 151 record in MMA.

• Jackie Joyner, 6 times Olympic Gold Medalist in track and field, first woman to score 7,291 points in the Heptathlon and still is the current World Records Holder. Jackie is considered one of the greatest American track athletes in history. She won six Olympic medals, including three gold in her athletic career, runs several charitable organization that help communities throughout the world.

• Ronnie Lott, 4 times NFL super Bowl Champion and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a very humble individual. He played defensive back for five teams in his football career. Ronnie is a successful businessman and an ardent philanthropist.

• Richard Sorin is famously known as a legend for his extraordinary Grip Strength technique. Founder of Sorinex Exercise Equipment and a trailblazer in the Iron Game for over 50 years. Sorin is undoubtedly a great inspiration to many in the sports arena and business.

At the end of the ISHOF everyone had the opportunity to exchange words with each other, take photos and congratulate all the honorees. This is what makes the event very special, honoring extraordinary individuals, fighters, martial artists, NFL players, body builders, strongman and woman, movie stars and all kinds of sports athletes that earned their place in sports

history. For all the positive reasons there be we know with confidence that next year the festival will be greater and promises to be more than an ‘Experience.’
