MYP4 Language and Literature

Student comments:

In Langauge and Literature this year, we covered 2 fantastic literature texts. Maus was a graphic novel, based on the story of a holocaust survivor. The entire novel is presented symbolically, representing Jews as mice and Nazis as cats, showing the representation of power through symbolisation. The second book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time is a story written from the point of view of an autistic boy, named Christopher, who is trying to solve a murder mystery, but ends up diving into a lot of secrets. Throughout these texts, we have become more aware of our world, both past and current, which opened our eyes and allowed us to become better versions of ourselves.

MYP Hungarian

At BBIS, we believe the value of learning one's mother tongue in enhancing communication skills and fostering a sense of cultural connection among native speakers. We believe that acquiring a strong command of the Hungarian language is essential for our students, as it empowers them to navigate and excel in both their present and future lives. Additionally, we believe that native speakers should have the opportunity to explore and celebrate their own culture, history, and traditions, enabling them to develop a deeper understanding of their identity.

To achieve these objectives, BBIS provides Hungarian native speakers with the opportunity to study Hungarian grammar, literature, and creative writing. Furthermore, for Year 6 and MYP students, we offer Hungarian history courses. While our lessons are based on the Hungarian national curriculum, we place a particular emphasis on developing the skills necessary for successful participation in future Hungarian literature studies within the IB Diploma Programme offered by our school.

During the current academic year, our Hungarian classes have focused on literature. Students have had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the classics of Hungarian literature, explore different literary representations, and delve into various literary genres. To facilitate their learning, we have incorporated practical and creative group assignments, which have proven to be highly engaging for our students. Group projects, theatre visits, and collaborative preparations for the March 15 Assembly have been particularly popular among our students. By showcasing Hungarian culture through classroom and school decorations, our students have been able to provide their non-Hungarian peers with a glimpse into the richness of Hungarian cultural heritage.
