WELCOME TO THE 13 TH LANCASTER MUSIC FESTIVAL

Welcome to the 13th edition of the Lancaster Music Festival!

We’re looking forward to another jam-packed, music-filled weekend in Lancaster – and with over 400 performances happening in over 60 venues, there’s something for all ages and all music tastes.

There are musical hotspots all over the city centre, ranging from pubs, cafes and shops, to outdoor stages, public spaces and historic buildings such as Lancaster Castle, Lancaster Priory and Judges’ Lodgings. As you’ll see from our Map (pp.34-35), each venue is easily walkable from the main squares and travel hubs. We’re also excited to welcome a few new Busk Stop venues to the LMF line-up - and keep an eye out for a special acoustic piano odyssey taking place in a number of new venues as well…

There are plenty of other opportunities to get involved, whether that’s dancing in the streets, learning new skills on a collection of unusual instruments, singing away in the Tuneless Choir or joining in with interactive story shows and family activities. Not to mention the small matter of our Secret LMF gigs!

We’ll also be celebrating and showcasing the work we do outside of the festival weekend, ranging from the LMF Academy stars performing on our Market Square stage to a performance of Andy Whitfield’s For Every Child by primary school children at Lancaster Priory.

TICKETS

The majority of gigs and events are free to attend. Those that do have an entry charge are marked in the Listings page. Tickets for these events are available via the Book button on the website: www.lancastermusicfestival.com

FESTIVAL UPDATES

This Official Guide contains all the information you need to thoroughly enjoy the festival but things do change between when we go to press and the festival weekend. Please check the website for the most up-to-date listings.

BLUE GIANT ORKESTAR

A tunetastic trans-European gold-plated instrumental hydra of nuclear brass, searing fiddle, pounding tuba, one enormous Russian concert accordion and a percussion section that could flatten your house. Fuelled by Balkan horos, Serbian brass festivals, Turkish pop songs, Bulgarian accordion fireworks, the suggestion of a Scottish ceilidh and the odd Swedish polska, they play powerful and intricate originals as well as arrangements from many nations and peoples.

HARRI LARKIN

Armed with a genre-bending cocktail of Funk, Punk, Jazz, Pop & Grunge influences, Sheffield-based DIY alternative trio Harri Larkin dare to provide you with a new sonic experience, beautifully intertwined with huge grooves and catchy choruses.

Harri’s entire debut album was broadcast on BBC Introducing Sheffield, which resulted in the band being asked to open Tramlines Festival main stage in July 2022.

“This band…Go and see them live. You will walk away with the biggest grin on your face, they are wonderful.” – Christian Carlisle, BBC Introducing Sheffield & Kerrang Radio.

HI SIENNA

A female-fronted, alternative-pop band from Manchester, Hi Sienna’s unique song-writing, infectious melodies and boisterous live performances captivate audiences from start to finish.

Formed in late 2019, they bounced onto the scene with their debut single ‘Favourite Thing’, headlined Manchester’s Deaf Institute and supported Scouting For Girls at the O2 Ritz before releasing their debut EP earlier this year.

Lead singer PoppyJo’s unique vocals are often compared to the likes of Cerys Matthews and (a very Manc) Bjork, with the band mostly taking influence from the 80s and 90s music scene and their Manchester roots.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS AND PARTNERS

LMF 2023 has been made possible through public funding from Arts Council England, sponsorship from Lancaster BID and Lancaster Brewery, crowdfunding via our Crowdfund Lancashire campaign supported by the Lancashire Culture and Sport Fund, and funding from local and regional trusts and funds. We’d like to highlight some of the special projects and events that funding from these supporters makes possible. For full event listings for these events check out the Special Projects section of the festival website: lancastermusicfestival.com

FOR EVERY CHILD

In memory of much-loved Lancaster composer and music legend Andy Whitfeld, who passed away in 2022, Lancaster Millennium Choir and pupils from Dallas Road and Willow Lane primary schools will perform Andy’s For Every Child, an oratorio based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. This event will be very popular so booking in advance is recommended via the festival website.

Funded by Arts Council England / FC Scott Trust / Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund

Fri 13 / 19:30-20:15 / Lancaster Priory

LMF ACADEMY

Part of our desire to help develop and nurture young talent, LMF Academy provides exciting opportunities to burgeoning young performers. Having been selected earlier this year our five artists have been mentored in songwriting this summer by Lancaster’s very own LOWES and Limelight Studio. You can see these and other rising stars at the Youth Stage in Market Square, run by young people in partnership with More Music’s More Media Collective, and at The Storey Printroom.

GIRLS CAN

Through workshops, panel discussions and performances, More Music’s Girls Can is a fantastic opportunity for young women to nurture and develop their musical, technical and professional practice and meet inspirational artists and industry professionals.

Headlined by Loose Articles, a Manchester punk quartet whose music speaks to all those determined to get through the age of austerity with tongue in cheek, pint in hand, and two feet firmly on the dance floor.

Following off the back of their ‘Kick Like A Girl’ tour, designed to encourage more girls into the music industry, Loose Articles will be supporting the Foo Fighters in Manchester next summer. Catch them while you can!

Sun 15 / 15:00-16:00 / Storey Auditorium - Panel discussion

Sun 15 / 17:30-19:30 / Storey Auditorium - Loose Articles + support

LMF IN HOSPITALS & SCHOOLS

Stuck in school or hospital during LMF? Don’t worry, we’re taking musicians into primary schools, care homes and the Infirmary in the run up to the festival thanks to our funders and sponsors.

Funded by Lancaster Community Wellbeing Fund / FC Scott Trust

UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS

Featuring an array of quirky, seldom heard instruments, our unusual instrument showcase includes such oddities as the Hurdy Gurdy, nyckelharpa, willow flute, ondes Martenot and bagpipes from Spain and Eastern Europe. Sign Out Loud choir will be joining us, while the Kazoonatics Orchestra is also offering the opportunity to play a part - literally! Check out our Workshops page for this and other workshops, including playing instruments made from fruit and making music using books.

Sun 15 / 11:15-12:00 / Herbarium

Sun 15 / 11:30-17:00 / Market Square

SECRET LMF

Shhh, don’t tell anyone! It’s just you, me, a handful of other people and one or two musicians in smaller, secret locations. Previous Secret LMF venues have included the Cottage Museum, the bell-ringing chamber halfway up Lancaster Priory clock tower and a harpsichord maker’s workshop. There are new spots for this year…but it’s all very hush hush…

Very limited places, booking essential via the festival website.

SONGS FROM HOME: FUSION

Our popular Songs From Home program returns with a theme of fusion – a fusion of cultures, musical styles and musicians!

ZI LAN LIAO & TIAN QIYI

To say that John Tian Qi and Charlie Tian Yi Wardle come from a musical family is a bit of an understatement. Their father is bassist Jah Wobble, who worked with Brian Eno and Björk among others, whilst their mother, Zi Lan Liao, is renowned as one of the world’s best guzheng players.

Their band Tian Qiyi converts their diverse influences into a mix of jazz, trip hop and psychedelics with eastern influences and instruments. Their performance with their mother Zi Lan will be a more traditional affair.

Sat 14 / 12:30-13:15 / Lancaster Priory

Sat 14 / 15:00-15:45 / Storey (Tian Qiyi)

GAZELLEBAND

Led by oud player Reem Anbar from Gaza and buzuq player Louis Brehony, Gazelleband are one of Europe’s leading Palestinian and Arab music groups. Their work traverses international borders, featuring music from the Middle East and beyond, telling the stories of Palestine and other rarely heard cultures.

Sat 14 / 13:45-14:30 / Lancaster Priory

LAURE CHAN & WILLIAM JACK

We loved Laure’s quote that “London could learn a lot from Lancaster” after appearing at LMF last year. The British Franco-Chinese classical violinist returns bringing along Australian cellist and guitarist William Jack. Inspired by her Eurasian roots the collaboration combines classical music, Chinese traditional and Celtic folk with William’s rock, jazz, blues and pop inspirations.

Fri 13 / 18:30-20:30 / Atkinsons Hall

Sun 15 / 13:30-14:30 / Gregson Olive Room

Sun 15 / 20:15-21:15 / Judges Lodgings

BRUCE NCUBE & TONY COX

A new partnership was forged when we introduced Zimbabwean musician Bruce Ncube, who will be in Lancaster to facilitate some of our primary school and singing workshops, to award-winning fingerstyle guitarist Tony Cox, also originally from Zimbabwe and now based in Lancaster. Together they will perform songs from their mutual heritage in Southern Africa followed by a solo set from Tony. A collaboration not to be missed!

Sat 14 / 15:00-16:30 / Lancaster Priory

WORKSHOPS

SIQIAN’S PIANO ODYSSEY

Looking for a way to include our favourite concert pianist in our Busk Stop program we arrived at an enticing challenge – could Siqian Li play all the acoustic pianos in Lancaster city centre during the festival weekend? On a mission, we tracked down 9 grand and upright pianos – in schools, churches, pubs, community centres, coffee shops – and set about getting them into as good a shape as possible. Follow Siqian on her odyssey as she plays the city’s pianos, from the Steinway and Yamaha grands to the old pub joannas with missing notes and broken pedals, and a program ranging from Bach to Gershwin.

Technicians are still working on some of them so check the website listings and Special Projects section for updated venues and timings.

ACCESSIBILITY

Producing an event of this size in multiple venues across a historic city centre with heritage buildings (and cobblestones!) presents a host of challenges when it comes to access. However, we’ve been working with Attitude is Everything to look at how we can improve our accessibility information and training, and make steps to ensure everyone can access the festival.

We’re updating our venues page with details about each site’s accessibility, accessible toilets and viewing areas, and details of signed performances.

Head to www.lancastermusicfestival.com or scan the QR code.

FEEDBACK

We’d really like to hear what you think about the festival – good and bad. What’s hitting the right notes and what’s off key; your favourite acts, venues and events and what you’d like to see at future LMFs.

Our online questionnaire should just take a few minutes of your time, but this information greatly helps us improve and make each festival the best it can be. It’s also important in helping us secure funding for LMFs to come.

Please visit tinyurl.com/lmf2023feedback or scan the QR code below to share your thoughts. Thank you.
