Hello and welcome to the 12 th edition of the Lancaster Music Festival. It’s great to be back again!
This year we have over 60 venues showcasing fantastic musicians. Ranging from shops, pubs, and cafés, live music venues, public spaces and historic buildings such as Lancaster Castle and Lancaster Priory, it’s all easily walkable from the city centre.
There are plenty of new venues for 2022. The Sugarhouse join us as a main venue with ticketed events featuring top 10 album chart acts The Lottery Winners and Massive Wagons. Other new places include Judges’ Lodgings Museum, Lancaster Folk Club at the Collegian Social Club, Tite & Locke bar at Lancaster Station - and a floating stage on Ram, a maintenance boat on Lancaster Canal!
Dallas Road Primary School will host a mini family festival in its grounds and hall while the Craic Inn mobile stage will fill Sun Square with Celtic sounds and merriment.
Special events include a Brazilian carnival, piano evening, rewinds to 1942 and 1822, secret venues, world
music programmes and family-friendly activities for all ages from under 5s upwards.
With live music, dance, workshops and themed special events there will be something for everyone to enjoy, no matter what age or musical taste. And almost everything is free!
The great majority of gigs and events are free to attend. Those that do have an entry charge, such as the headline gigs at the Sugarhouse, are marked in the Listings pages. Tickets for these events are available via the Book button on the festival website: lancastermusicfestival.com
This Official Guide contains all the information you need to thoroughly enjoy the festival but things do change between when we go to press and the festival weekend. Please check the website for the most up-to-date listings.

Lancaster Music Festival is made possible through public funding from Arts Council England (thank you to all those Lancaster residents who play the National Lottery!). Big thanks also to our long-term supporters Lancaster BID and Lancaster Brewery, whose continued funding means that LMF can keep coming back to celebrate music and our city. We’d like to highlight some of the special projects and events that funding from these and other supporters make possible. For full event listings for these events check out the Special Projects section of the festival website, lancastermusicfestival.com.
THE BILLIONAIRES
Jump back in time with us and enjoy the sounds and sights of 1942! We’ve been working with a team of young people who have researched and programmed what LMF might have sounded like during this important year in WWII as part of Lancaster City Museum’s Hinge of Fate exhibition. Performances and workshops featuring swing, big band, lindy hop, crooners and, of course, ukuleles!
Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund
We’ve been nurturing new young talent via our Search For A Star programme and since being selected earlier in the year four acts have been mentored in song-writing by Lancaster’s very own recording stars Lowes Catch these and other young acts at the Youth Stage in Market Square, run by young people in partnership with More Music’s More Media Collective, and at The Storey Printroom.
Funded by Banks Lyon Memorial Trust / Fear Records

Songs From Home at Lancaster Priory sees international musicians sharing songs from their heritage and homeland, amongst them
Galician guitarist Iago Banet and Welsh folk singer Mair Thomas. Featuring throughout the festival will be internationally-renowned pianist Siqian Li, violinist Laure Chan and pipa-player Cheng Yu.
BBC Folk Singer of the Year Ríoghnach Connolly has been working with refugees and asylum seekers to form a group of Sanctuary Singers whilst Lancaster guitarist Howard Haigh has been collaborating with Chinese student group 12 Strings Chinese Orchestra. We can’t wait to see the results of their collaborations at their festival performances!

Born in Salford and raised on romance, The Lottery Winners blend momentous guitar pop melodies with a humorous and wistful lyricism. In 2020 the Lottery Winners truly bloomed, their debut album entering the Official Charts at #10. Living in a bubble during lockdown the band worked on creative projects, writing and recording a wealth of new music, collaborating with Frank Turner, Sleeper, the Wonder Stuff and even (bizarrely) Nickelback. Freed from their cages, in 2021 they released a string of radio singles, playing sold out shows and main-stages of festivals all over the world, including a sell-out O2 Ritz in Manchester. There’s so much more to come from this band and we can’t wait to bring them to Lancaster!

Since forming in Lancaster in 2009 the band have, in the words of Classic Rock Magazine, “blossomed from local concern to national conversation”, becoming a firm favourite of rock fans and press alike across Europe thanks to their no-nonsense anthems, electrifying live shows, unconquerable work ethic and fun-loving personalities.
The first ever Lancaster band to achieve a UK Top 20 album, Massive Wagons are due to release their sixth album TRIGGERED!, the long-anticipated follow-up to the UK #9 album House Of Noise.

The Eggs are back! Undoubtedly one of the most exciting, innovative and...
We interrupt this unnecessary advertorial (it’s sold out!) with an important message. LMF wouldn’t be the huge success it is today without the talent of the city’s diverse music community. Lancaster Music Co-op is at the heart of that community, an important affordable space for musicians to rehearse, record and meet up for more than 35 years.
Four years ago, Lancaster City Council issued the Co-op with an eviction order as the building (owned by LCC) had deteriorated. The district’s music community fought the eviction and councillors unanimously agreed to repair the building and secure the Co-op’s future as an important community resource.
During Covid, Lancaster Music Co-op closed its doors in preparation for the repairs to the building. However, these repairs have not happened and the Co-op has been unable to re-open.
As you will see from this weekend, the music community across the district is just as strong and vibrant as ever. And we need our Co-op back! We hope to be able to update you with positive news this weekend. The aim is to re-open in 2023.
Peace, love and rock on!
The Lovely Eggs
Their style could be described as a mix of R&B, hip-hop, rap with blues, jazz and pop but Hanover’s Noam Bar simply call their sound “angry woman music”.
Written by lead singer Noam Bar their songs deal with personal stories about an exhusband, ex-boyfriends, ex-bosses and other survival experiences and bad choices. Blending a critical perspective with a touch of selfhumour and irony, all together wrapped up in upbeat soulful grooves, they will either make you laugh, cry, dance or all of the above.

Inspired by the floor-shaking rhythms and vibrant dances of North-Eastern Brazil, Juba do Leão take the audience on an enlightening tour of the intoxicating grooves of Brazil and beyond. Every performance features beats and breaks that offer a dynamic journey of Brazilian coastal grooves for an unsuspecting audience. Follow their carnival trail from Aldcliffe Triangle through Dalton Square to Kanteena.

Always accompanied by a wide smile, a guitar and a twinkling eye Blanty is a one off. Full of positive energy, catchy foot tappers, beautiful balladry and a wonderful musical journey, Blanty’s dynamic scattergun performance will have you touring the world and back with him. Humour, storytelling and tongue-tying ad-lib make each show so uniquely intimate yet unifying. Blanty’s enthusiasm is contagious, his songs very catchy, his music distinctly individual. With Lancashire roots, his connection and interaction with the audience means they bounce off each other, egging each other on, making each show unique.

Dronningen, meaning ‘the queen’ in Scandinavian tongues, is an electro-rock band formed in London in 2014 by Beatrice Bonnano (vocals/guitar) and Vito Cerasia (lead guitar), both originally from Italy. Since then, the pair have been eagerly welcomed around the globe, playing shows in the UK, Sweden, France and India. Their music bears a snarl and breath of defiance led by fuzz-fired guitars and their live shows are highly dynamic and upbeat, an invitation to proudly uncage the real you and dance.

Described as ‘refreshingly different’ by the Evening Standard and ‘a nano second ahead of the pulse’ by BBC Radio Essex, Georgia takes inspiration from the greats - the stage presence of Presley, the vocal prowess of Joplin and the flamboyant style of Bolan. Her compositions are fresh with an unrivalled retro style meaning her demographic appeal is both young and old.

Producing an event of this size in multiple venues across a historic city centre with ancient buildings (and cobblestones!) does present a host of challenges with regard to access. We’ve been working with charity Attitude is Everything to look at how we can improve information about accessibility and make steps to ensure everyone can access the festival.
We’d love to know your thoughts about this year’s festival, good or bad. Your favourite acts, venues and events and your ideas for the future.
Please take a few minutes to fill out our online questionnaire. Your feedback will be important in helping us secure funding for future festivals.
Use
Keep an eye on the Venues page on the website as we add information about venue accessibility, accessible toilets and viewing areas, and details of signed performances. lancastermusicfestival.com
