2023 was another busy year for Keswick and the Visit Keswick team have loved seeing people out and about, enjoying everything that our wonderful town, valleys, and villages have to offer. Even on a damp day, there are smiling faces.

Over recent years we have seen a far more diverse range of visitors coming to the area, and this is something we have really embraced. There are more ways to get out and enjoy the outdoors in Keswick than there have ever been, so what are you waiting for?

Of course, walking is by far the most popular activity when visiting Keswick as we have a wide range of walks to suit all abilities. Walk the high fells or choose something low level if you prefer, there are long, full day walks right down to short strolls and there are walks for those who have mobility issues or have children in a pushchair.

Getting out on the water is probably the next most popular activity, and Derwentwater Marina along with our other multi-activity providers are on hand to provide the equipment and support that you need and ensure that you stay safe. From canoeing to paddleboarding and wild swimming to sailing, just take your pick.

If you are looking for something more adventurous, how about a high ropes experience, an infinity

bridge or some ghyll scrambling? Our experienced activity providers will help guide you and ensure that whatever you choose to do, it is right for you.

There’s just as much fun to be had indoors

Keswick is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, but it’s not all about the great outdoors.

Visitors can also experience a delightful array of indoor attractions that offer a fascinating escape from unpredictable weather or simply provide a different perspective on this picturesque region.

What’s more, many of these attractions offer excellent accessibility features, making them inclusive for all visitors.

Keswick Museum is a cultural gem with an extensive collection of art, archaeology, and historical artefacts. The museum is wheelchair-accessible and offers touchscreen displays with audio descriptions.

Did you know that we have another museum?

Keswick is famous for its pencil production, and the Derwent Pencil Museum is a celebration of this legacy. The museum has worked hard to ensure 8

accessibility for all visitors. In addition to what you would expect they provide large print and audio guides for those with visual impairments.

For a dose of culture, head to Theatre by the Lake and Keswick Alhambra Cinema. Both offer varied programmes meaning that there will be something for everyone. Both offer relaxed performances and have hearing induction loops as well as welcoming assistance dogs.

Mirehouse Historic House and Gardens is just a short drive from Keswick and offers visitors the chance to explore a historic home and stunning gardens. Whilst some assistance is required due to the uneven terrain in the gardens, the house itself is fully accessible.

Another fantastic indoor activity allows you to discover the craft of brewing at Keswick Brewery.

Many visitors to Keswick enjoy a leisurely afternoon at one of our charming cafes or bakeries, where you will find a selection of delectable pastries and savoury treats.

Whilst the old buildings in Keswick do not lend themselves to accessibility, many shops and eateries have taken strides to improve accessibility, providing ramps, wide doorways, spacious interiors, and friendly staff ready to help. Keep an eye out for shops displaying the “Accessible Keswick” logo (right).

Keswick’s retail and culinary scene is as diverse and welcoming as the town itself. Everyone, regardless of mobility or dietary preferences, can make the most of their visit. Whether you’re exploring local crafts, sampling exquisite cuisine, or simply enjoying a relaxing cup of tea, Keswick has something special to offer in the heart of the Lake District.

Silver Meadows A Wetland Walk

The Walk Dubwath Silver Meadows is a traditional wetland site and a real hidden gem. It is quite likely that you have passed this amazing place without even realising it was there.

It is a tranquil and peaceful area that is home to a wealth of birds, animals, butterflies, and rare plants.

The history of how this area has developed into what it is today is fascinating and information boards around the site will tell you everything you need to know about it. You can walk in a loop through a variety of different bogs and heaths: 12

Hay meadow – in summer this meadow is allowed to grow so the wildflowers can bloom, providing nectar for insects and allowing them to drop their seeds.

Wet heath – this area is dominated by lush growth of a variety of tall plants which have had many uses by previous inhabitants.

Norse Shelter – a bird hide made by traditional methods where you can sit and watch the birds at the feeders.

Willow Carr – almost mangrove-like wetland willow woodland.

This is the wettest part of the reserve, characterised by willow with purple moor grass underneath, both plants happy to have their roots submerged in water.

Celtic shelter – marvel at this unique wattle and daub construction while you rest your legs.

Snipe bog – another wet part of the reserve, this area is home to several shy birds and mammals, you may see or hear ground nesting birds, roe deer and, if you’re very lucky, otters.

Accessibility: Wheelchair, pushchair and tramper accessible. Dogs welcome but must be always on leads due to deer and ground nesting birds. The paths are flat and made up of either recycled plastic boardwalk, or hardcore path.

There are a number of gates.

Starting point: Located just off the A66 at the Pheasant Inn/Dubwath junction, at the west end of Bassenthwaite Lake. The route starts opposite Bassenthwaite Lake Station.

Informal parking is available by the roadside, please park considerately.

Bus: X5 (alight at Dubwath), and the X4 (alight at Brathay Hill).

Entry: Entry is FREE. However, the reserve is managed by a group of local volunteers, so we suggest you consider donating or even become a friend for only £5 per year.

They organise regular events including Dawn Chorus, Bat Evenings and Ecology Walks which are open to everyone. www.dubwathsilvermeadows.org.uk Refreshments: We recommend Bassenthwaite Lake Station situated across the road from the entrance. An award-winning café set in a refurbished train station and replica Orient Express carriage.

DID YOU KNOW? The pond known as the ‘scrape’ is the result of a happy mishap where a tractor used in constructing the boardwalk got stuck. The difficult rescue operation resulted in a deep pond which is now full of wildlife including frogs and dragonflies.

Getting Around

GETTING TO KESWICK

By Road

By Taxi

Keswick is easily reached via junction 40 of the M6 (Penrith) or the A1 and the A66. For a scenic route coming from the South leave the M6 at junction 36 and take the A591 through Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere.

Taxis from Keswick will meet trains at railway stations and airports by prior arrangement.

The nearest railway station to Keswick is Penrith, on the West Coast Main Line. A regular bus service, taking forty minutes, connects Penrith railway station with Keswick Bus Station. The historic Settle to Carlisle Railway line brings passengers from Yorkshire via the Eden Valley.

By Launch Why not see the spectacular scenery around Derwentwater from one of the Keswick Launches. Stop off at one of the boat landings to take a stroll along the lakeshore and catch the launch again further along the route.
