7TH ANNUAL INDUCTION CEREMONY

HISTORY OF THE BOWIE STATE SPORTS HALL OF FAME During the 1970s, the Hall of Fame was established by, John Sidney Sheppard (aka - J. Sidney Sheppard), who at the time was the President of the Bowie State College National Alumni Association, Inc. Mr. Sheppard appointed James "Barney" Waters to serve as the Chairman of the Hall of Fame Committee. Mr. Waters served as the Chairman of the Hall of Fame until his death. Mr. Sheppard, Mr. Waters and others used their collective knowledge of the Bowie State sports programs to recognize previous athletes, dating back to the 1930s, for Induction into the Hall of Fame. Their names were provided and placed on the two Hall of Fame plaques during the 1970s. There is no record of any Induction Ceremonies held to commemorate this honor. For years, the two Hall of Fame plaques were a fixture in the trophy case in the James Gymnasium Facility. Overtime, the two Hall of Fame plaques were rotated out of the trophy case and one was eventually lost. The remaining Hall of Fame plaque is in the property of the BSU Athletic Department. From 1980 until 1989, Mr. Waters was able to preside over several student-athlete inductions of players who played during the 1970's era. However, only one player's name was ever placed on one of the original Hall of Fame plaques, Milton Carr - Running Back, of the Jet Magazine's 1975 Independent Black College Champion Football Team. The remaining players who were recognized by the Hall of Fame from this era, never received the honor of their names appearing on the Hall of Fame plaques. Those players are: William Norris "Bubba" Roy, Jr. Football, Gregory McCollough - Football, Andre P. McCollough - Football, Donald L. Ball, Jr. Football, Archie O'Neil - Football, and William "Bosco" Bostic - Baseball. After 1989, the Hall of Fame's recognition activities discontinued. In 2007, a group of former Bowie State students and student-athletes formed the Sports Hall of Fame Committee to reestablish the Bowie State Hall of Fame. The initial members on the Committee included, Andre P. McCollough, Donald L. Ball, Jr., William "Bosco" Bostic, Al Brathaway, Donna Bogle, Adrian "Pat" Bogle, Myra Robinson and Ricardo C. Mitchell. In 2008, the Sports Hall of Fame Committee presented the idea of reestablishing the Hall of Fame to the Bowie State University Alumni Association, Inc. and Bowie State University Athletic Department; however, the idea was not adopted. From 2008 to 2013, the Sports Hall of Fame Committee endured several rejections of its idea to reestablish the Bowie State Hall of Fame. Eventually, the initial members withdrew from the BSU Sports Hall of Fame Committee's activities. In 2013, Dr. John A. Word, President of the Bowie State University National Alumni Association, Inc. (BSUNAA), and the Executive Board voted to establish the Sports Hall of Fame as a Committee under the National Alumni Association. The Sports Hall of Fame Committee was accepted and authorized as a Standing Committee under the BSUNAA. Also, the Committee was recognized and accepted by the Bowie State University Athletic Department and the Athletic Director, Anton Goff, served as a Member. In May 2014, the Sports Hall of Fame Committee Inducted its First Class. A month later, June 2014, the Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame Alumni Chapter was formed and sanctioned by the Bowie State University National Alumni Association, Inc. (BSUNAA). In June 2015, the BSU Sports Hall of Fame Inducted its First Class. Provided above is a brief history on the Bowie State Hall of Fame and the BSU Sports Hall of Fame. Of course, this history was captured by word-of-mouth, and may not be 100% accurate. If you have any information that provides a clearer picture of the History of the Bowie State Hall Of Fame, please feel free to share it with its members.

June 26, 2021 Congratulations to all the honorees who will be recognized at the BSUNAA Sports Hall of Fame ceremony! I am thrilled to see this tradition reinstated before we conclude another academic year for BSU. For over a year, we have experienced unprecedented times impacting this event and so many others. It is reassuring to know that we are returning to a sense of normalcy as we recognize such outstanding individuals who have excelled and left a lasting legacy of our historic university. It is my hope that, not long from now, we will be able to meet once again on our campus as one community united in the determination to rise beyond the challenges we have faced. I look forward to seeing everyone in the coming months when we begin the 2021-22 athletic season and welcome a new generation of student-athletes to BSU. With the return to campus and plan to open the Entrepreneurial Living Leaming Community in August, we will continue celebrating the success of our athletic teams and the bright future ahead for our students. The name of the university strategic plan is entitled Racing to Excellence; and it is through the support of those attending this event and the example you set that empowers our students to strive for greater success. As we work towards achieving our strategic priorities of student success, academic excellence, and the long-term viability of the university, we salute each of the honorees, the BSUNAA, and all who open doors to higher education--Racing to Excellence alongside our campus community. BSU offers a vital pathway to economic prosperity and growth for many students and their families, and we are grateful for the BSUNAA and to all who support of our student athletes and athletic programs that contribute to the fabric of the Bulldog spirit. Thank you to the Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame for providing the platform to recognize our former athletes, coaches, faculty, administrators and supporters. Greetings Hall of Fame Recipients, On behalf of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation and the entire Bowie State University community, it is with great enthusiasm that I congratulate you on your induction into the Bowie State University Hall of Fame. Victory is finite; success is eternal. Your success during your tenure as a student-athlete demonstrated your ability to manage the demands and commitments necessary for academic excellence, social consciousness, and exemplary athletic performance. That success is now a revolution of intrinsic growth as you walk through the gates of the Sports Hall of Fame and take your seat among the great Hall of Fame student-athletes of BSU. You have now parlayed your success as student-athletes into becoming outstanding leaders within your respective professional careers, always representing Bulldog Nation with a great sense of respect, pride and self-discipline. Letter from BSUNAA President Darren M. Swain Greetings Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame Inductees, As President of the Bowie State University National Alumni Association (BSUNAA) I am proud to bring greetings and acknowledge such an austere group of alumni and the selection committee that found it worthy to recognize you. Your continued demonstration of commitment to alma mater and your contributions to our athletic legacy is worthy of celebration. The induction of this latest class of talented Bulldogs harkens me back to the earliest days of our creation of the Bulldog Athletic legacy. Our 2nd Principal and 1st President (officially titled) Mr. Leonidas S. James, introduced athletics during his tenure, insisting the addition of athletics would allow for the complete student development. His foresight would allow for stellar future student athletes, including Robert Gray, Sidney Sheppard and later, our very own State Senator Joanne C. Benson. Like many of you, this accomplished group not only performed with their athletics skills, but went on to set the example for academic performance and community service. I salute each of you for this prestigious recognition and ask that you join the BSUNAA in our quest to continue our legacy of excellence in athletics, promote our history of academic superiority and build on our active contribution to our endowed treasures. Sincerely, Darren M. Swain, President Bowie State University National Alumni Association, Inc. bsunaa.org | #bsunaa1865 | @bowiealumni

Mr. Sheppard served twice as the President of the National Alumni Association and during his term, he authorized the formation of the Hall of Fame under the National Alumni Association. Mr. Sheppard continues his service to Bowie State and the National Alumni Association where he serves as Historian Emeritus. In 2015, J. As a student, Berney was involved in athletics playing football, basketball and track and field. He was a proud member of the President's Club, since its inception, and a member of the Century Club. His generosity was legendary. Barney will be remembered for his melodious voice and how he always led his fellow alumni in the singing of the Alma Mater. Upon his death, the James "Barney" Waters Endowed Scholarship was established.

We came in with about seven or eight swimmers and Howard had 20 or 30.I guess you could say that it was a highlight just being able to field a team. Other teams that I can recall on our schedule were Morgan, Delaware State, UMES, Shepherd College, and Hartford Community College. Our second season was met with great optimism as we would be joined by Coach Lynn Lawson’s big prized recruit: Robert “Red Dog” Talley. The team was built around Robert and local Bowie HS grad Tommy Price. We began to experience some success (win some races).

I have to live with myself, and so I want to be fit for myself to know I want to be able as days go by, Always to look myself straight in the eye. I don't want to stand with the setting sun, And hate myself for the things I've done, I can never hide myself from me; I see what others may never see, I know what others may never know, I can never fool myself, and soWhatever happens, I want to be Self-respecting and conscience free.
