Provided above is a brief history on the Bowie State Hall of Fame and the BSU Sports Hall of Fame.

HISTORY OF THE BOWIE STATE SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Of course, this history was captured by word-of-mouth, and may not be 100% accurate. If you have any information that provides a clearer picture of the History of the Bowie State Hall Of Fame, please feel free to share it with its members.

Among the many achievements realized is the remarkable performance by our athletic teams. There are many shining examples of excellence across the spectrum of teams, and your support of our beloved BSU allows us to serve as a model for innovation and academic and athletic excellence. Over the last year, our athletic teams won conference and divisional championships and they look forward to returning to competition in the coming months.

I look forward to seeing everyone on campus as we begin our upcoming athletic season and welcome a new generation of student-athletes to BSU.

While the last two years have impacted all of us, it is reassuring to see the tradition of the BSU Sports Hall of Fame held once again, honoring the outstanding achievements of our Bulldogs.

I am also pleased to share that while we were apart, the students, faculty and staff at BSU have continued to uphold the Bulldog spirit. The campus remained focused on advancing the BSU Ra6ing to Excellence Strategic Plan; and as a result, we have seen outstanding achievements for each of the three priorities of our strategic plan - academic excellence, student success and the long-term viability of the university.

Sincerely, TH INDUCTIONANNUALCEREMONY 8

Again, congratulations, and enjoy the festivities!

BOWIE STATE UNIVERSITY SPORTS HALL of FAME 2022 INDUCTION CEREMONY

Greetings Sports Hall of Fame Recipients, On behalf of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation and the entire Bowie State University community, it is with great enthusiasm that I congratulate you on your induction into the Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame.

I would like to thank the Sports Hall of Fame Committee, and Sports Hall of Fame President, Ricardo Mitchell, for their continued support of BSU athletics. The ultimate goal for intercollegiate athletics is to graduate every studentathlete who participates in our program. The BSU’s pillars of achievement of academic excellence, student success, and ensuring the long-term viability of this great university are our source of motivation. As we race to excellence on our yellow brick journey to become one of the best public comprehensive and nationally prominent universities in America, your continued support will help mold, shape, and guide our efforts. This is Bulldog Nation, Bowie Bold and Bulldog Strong!

The Sports Hall of Fame continues to set the bar high so that our current student-athletes understand the hard work required to excel in this very demanding intercollegiate athletic environment and within our diverse society.

Once again, congratulations and continued success.

ClydeSincerely,Doughty, Jr. Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics & Recreation Jericho Park Road, Leonidas S. James Physical Education Complex Bowie, Maryland, 20715 p 301-860-3559 f 301-860-3585

Victory is finite; success is eternal. Your success during your tenure as a student-athlete demonstrated your ability to manage the demands and commitments necessary for academic excellence, social consciousness, and exemplary athletic performance. That success is now a revolution of intrinsic growth as you walk through the gates of the Sports Hall of Fame and take your seat among the other great Sports Hall of Fame student-athletes of BSU. You have now parlayed your success as student-athletes into becoming outstanding leaders within your respective professional careers, always representing Bulldog Nation with a great sense of respect, pride and self-discipline.

Greetings Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame Inductees,

DarrenSincerely,M.

Swain, President Bowie State University National Alumni Association, Inc.

As President of the Bowie State University National Alumni Association (BSUNAA) I am proud to bring greetings and acknowledge such an austere group of alumni and the selection committee that found it worthy to recognize you. Your continued demonstration of commitment to alma mater and your contributions to our athletic legacy is worthy of celebration. The induction of this latest class of talented Bulldogs harkens me back to the earliest days of our creation of the Bulldog Athletic legacy. Our 2nd Principal and 1st President (officially titled) Mr. Leonidas S. James, introduced athletics during his tenure, insisting the addition of athletics would allow for the complete student development. His foresight would allow for stellar future student athletes, including Robert Gray, Sidney Sheppard and later, our very own State Senator Joanne C. Benson. Like many of you, this accomplished group not only performed with their athletics skills, but went on to set the example for academic performance and community service. I salute each of you for this prestigious recognition and ask that you join the BSUNAA in our quest to continue our legacy of excellence in athletics, promote our history of academic superiority and build on our active contribution to our endowed treasures.

The Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame Alumni Chapter is a sanctioned chapter under the Bowie State University National Alumni Association, Inc. (BSUNAA). Our mission is to recognize those individuals and teams, who through their accomplishments, have brought pride and distinction to the Bowie State and the community. As athletes or coaches, whose contributions have impacted the development and success of the Bowie State University Athletic programs.

The Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame names its highest honored award in the name of its founder, Mr. John Sidney Sheppard, for his enduring commitment to Bowie State and its athletic programs. As a student, Sidney played men's basketball. Sidney often says he was never the best player because he had two left feet. He only played basketball to even out the practice squad.

JAMES "BARNEY" WATERS DEDICATED SERVICE AWARD

Mr. Sheppard served twice as the President of the National Alumni Association and during his term, he authorized the formation of the Hall of Fame under the National Alumni Association. Mr. Sheppard continues his service to Bowie State and the National Alumni Association where he serves as Historian Emeritus. In 2015, J. Sidney Sheppard was a unanimous selection for the Sports Hall of Fame's Lifetime Achievement Award at the golden age of 92.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER

The coach is finding that his problems, instead of going away after all his work, are still increasing. “You work like hell to get ‘em in, and now you have to work like hell to keep ‘em in. That will be the key to our program keeping our players in school. I have to stay close on ‘em. Kids won’t tell you things are going bad. They’d rather quietly flunk out and disappear. You try to help them before they get in so deep nobody can pull them out.”

POISED

“On top of that there are so many girls out here that even the guys on the last string have instant popularity I have to constantly be on the lookout, you know, to keep ‘em on a straight line It’s a lot of freshmen to handle If this all doesn’t work out,” Jackson concludes, “it won’t be because I haven’t worked as hard as I could I’m here at 8 a m and leave at 9 or 10 at night. Sometimes I look at an old well known coach and I wonder what this’ll all be in 10 or 15 years. Something to be proud of or a big bust. But I guess it’s too late to be thinking about that. I just have to keep truckin’.”

For over a year, Jackson has worked to organize, recruit, equip, and field a varsity football team at Bowie State College On Saturday, Bowie plays its first football game ever at Virginia Commonwealth “Everybody over here is on the edge of their seats I think I’m more excited than the fellows I can’t walk across campus without people stopping me to ask about the team,” he said Bowie State students have a right to ask the coach questions They are paying for the team. “The student activities fee was increased to finance the team,” says Jackson who was named Howard University’s athlete of the decade on graduating in 1965. Bowie students decided several years ago that the liberal arts college needed to improve its “male image.” It originally established its reputation as a school specializing in training women for elementary education.

“Right now everything happy. We scrimmaged the Howard University freshmen and played them even. Our defense held them to almost no yardage And we moved the ball even though we didn’t throw a pass ” Does he hope Bowie will be as good as Howard when his freshman are seniors? “Weeeeeelll, something like that,” he confesses

Staley Jackson is about to start on what he thinks of as a long adventure, perhaps a lifelong adventure.

Bowie

Because of Jackson’s recruiting, about 85 per cent of Bowie’s 60 man squad is freshman. During his year of setting up the football program, Jackson spent “one whole month talking to over 200 players. I sent letters to every Washington and Baltimore high school Every single one ” Consequently, there are many local starters: Robert Cross, Cardozo end; Don Williams, Dunbar back; Don Ball, DeMatha’s all metropolitan guard; Rusty Baker Bowie linebacker; Tom Kelsic, 280 pound Roosevelt tackle, and William Valentine, Eastern safety, among others BY THOMAS BOSWELL

A Special Thanks to: I have to live with myself, and so I want to be fit for myself to know I want to be able as days go by, Always to look myself straight in the eye. I don't want to stand with the setting sun, And hate myself for the things I've done, I ca n never hide myself from me; I see what others may never see, I know what others may never know, I ca n never fool myself, and soWhatever happens, I want to be Self-respecting and conscience free.
