La
Trisha Mcintosh and La Tasha Taylor

Essence Easley loves all things tea, quotes, and a dream of someday partnering with Oprah Winfrey. The entrepreneur has a mission to live a more meaningful life that stems from her chronic illness and the company she created to help her and others manage it. Read more about her energy to build generational wealth and her thoughts on what will be her legacy.

The meaning behind your company name E&E Tea Co. is sweet. Are there any products that have a unique word meaning as well?

Thank you! We have 4‑ Blends with special meanings. Our Calm Blend is named after my husband & co founder. He created the blend to help with his sleeping, and if you know his calm demeanor, you'd understand that it's a perfect representation of him. Our Felitas Mix Detox Blend was created for my mom, who has been so diligent in her weight loss journey. Ezra's Midnight Lemonade was made with our son in mind. He's sweet, sometimes tart, loves blueberries, and has brightened up our lives. Lastly, our PTC Tea, our top‑selling blend, was created for my illness Pseudotumor Cerebri which those of us who have it affectionately call PTC. We're currently holding a contest to allow our customers to name a new blend we'll release soon.

There is a quote on your website "Where there is Tea, there is hope" (by Arthur Pinero). What is the hope for E&E Tea Co.?

Quotes are so important to me.

I leave them around the house, send them to those I love, and post them. There's always a perfect quote for the moment. We have many hopes for E & E Tea Co.; we want to continue growing, expanding in different marketplaces, sharing our knowledge, and helping people heal naturally. We want to share the love of tea with everyone and make a difference in the lives of our customers and the world.

You have a passion for learning & self-healing. Did it come about from your brain surgeries and chronic illnesses? How has the journey changed your outlook on life?

This battle has changed my outlook on everything! While my struggle will never truly be over. Right now, I'm doing well. Even in pain, I can get up every morning and do things I love, enjoy the ones I love, and help people. But I've always had a passion for learning. Throughout my formal education, I'd take advanced placement classes or join clubs to learn something new. That passion has just intensified with the times when we have so much knowledge at our fingertips. I recently completed a certificate program offered through the Bank of America Institute at Cornell University on Women's Entrepreneurship. My battle with chronic illnesses has changed my outlook on healing. I took many medications, which made me feel worse than the illness. I needed to find a way to feel better, especially since this is my life story. It's never going away. And from that, I found meditation and tea. I already enjoyed tea and had used it in my health journey when I had to

give up caffeine. Learning more about the medicinal benefits helped me select the best teas. Believe it or not, it worked. On bad days our PTC tea helps me get out of bed. When I need some energy, peppermint is my go to. I know everyone's journey isn't as complex as mine, but we all have something needing treatment, whether it's seasonal allergies or the occasional fever.

You care about the health of your customers and the environment. Was this the inspiration behind your choice to create organic products?

Absolutely. Organic natural ingredients with no dyes, alternatives, fragrances, or flavors. We wanted to give our customers exactly what they're drinking, none of the other stuff that you don't need and, in many cases, alter the taste of the tea and are bad for your overall health. It's a bonus that these organic & fair trade products suit the environment and our customers.

'Essentially You' is your bestseller for customers.

Yes, our customers love 'Essentially You' because they can create their blends. Some of the blends on our menu, like Mango Hibiscus Lemonade, started as ‘Essentially You’ blend. We have fun making them and seeing the creative sides of our customers.

Your dream of building generational wealth and breaking generational curses is important to you. How has that thinking impacted your family to unlearn ways to become a better person and entrepreneur?

BSM MAGAZINE | BSMANDMEDIA.COM | 7

It has propelled our family. The biggest thing I had to unlearn was complacency. I wanted to stay focused on where we were, but we had to be intentional with our thinking so we wouldn't feel bad about wanting more for ourselves. Unlearning has allowed us to seek growth and the betterment of ourselves and our business so that we create something our son and our families can

be proud of that can generate investment and employment opportunities for our loved ones.

What do you want your legacy to be?

For my family to say I gave my best to this company that was created, and the values built around it.

Summer is here. What is your summer tea vibe?

Iced tea and sun tea are our summer tea vibes. Peppermint and white or green tea blends and hibiscus are great summer options.

Are you looking to expand into more stores? What stores would you like to carry your Tea?

We want every store interested in E&E Tea Co. to sell our tea We're always looking for opportunities to get into new locations.

Oprah is a tea drinker. Could you see your company partnering with Lady ‘O’ for a tea campaign?

That would be a dream to partner with Oprah. Sharing a cup with her would be an honor. If you see this, Lady O, we're ready!

Do you have an international fan base?

We do! And we're so grateful it's growing. We have customers in Denmark, England, Sweden, and Canada.

What is it like working alongside your husband? How do you manage business and home life?

It is such a rewarding experience working with my husband. He's my best friend, so it allows us to spend time together, appreciate each other's

strengths and weaknesses, and use them to improve our business and marriage. For instance, Shane has a creative eye and can see things I can't, and I'll have a big idea, and he figures out how we can make it happen. Setting schedules, excellent communication, and sticking to boundaries have helped us manage our home & work and make sure we're intentional with saving time for ourselves and our son.

What makes E&E Tea Co. worth the taste?

E & E Tea Co is worth the taste because you're sure to find something you enjoy that is healthy & delicious. We appreciate everyone who tastes our products & hope you fall in love with each sip the way we have.

EMBRACING THE BEAUTY OF SUMMER

There is a beauty within every season of the year that yields various benefits, however it is something unusual and special about the summer that can bring out the best in us.

A time of fun, laughter and forming tighter relationships with those we love. Time of adventure and opportunities to explore cities, states and even countries some have never dreamed of. The beauty of the flowers, the sun shining brightly through the clear white clouds and the fine grain of sand between the toes of children as they build sand castles on beaches across this land. A time to ignite the palate with different foods from various cultures some of which you thought you would never try.

Exploring the country hillside with your significant other as you prepare the ground for a lovely picnic captured and covered by the shade of a tree.

Embracing the beauty of the

summer as you gaze into each other’s eyes relishing the moment in time together.

Embracing the Summer is getting out and allowing yourself to relax and breathe. Slowing down and stepping away from the hustle and fastmoving pace that comes along with the day to day responsibilities and not feeling guilty about it.

Embracing the beauty of the Summer does not mean you have to break the bank or that you must travel far. You can always check your local areas to see what events are being held or places that may suit you and your family.

If you want to explore beyond your local area, please visit travel.usnewscom some of the top vacation destinations listed this year.

Summer is a time of refreshing, exploring, and building stronger bonds and lasting memories.

STUNT PERFORMER APRIL WEEDEN

Lights camera action! Stunt coordinator April Weeden puts the "A" into action with her extensive stunt career in film and television. She's worked with everyone from Regina King to funnyman Martin Lawrence. Read more of her eventful interview here.

You are one of Hollywood's top stunt coordinators and performers. How did you get your start?

From my ex husband William Washington, he was my mentor. Rest in peace. He passed away in May. “You know what? You got to learn how to stunt coordinate,” he said to me back then, and that’s how it began. As a professional stunt woman and stunt coordinator (I coordinate all my stunts), I am the person that is hired on set to perform stunts for the talent.

Your work included such shows as "A Black Lady Sketch Show” & “The Upshaws."

Yes. Sean "Speedy" Christopher is one of my

mentors. I'm huge on mentoring, and he called me and asked me whether I wanted to take over A Black Lady Sketch Show for HBO. I was at home minding my business. It's funny how things work when we're quiet, and things come our way. Working on that show for me was magical and amazing. It was amazing how Issa Rae and Robin Thede ran their production companies. I stunt coordinated Seasons 2 and 3, which led to The Upshaws on Netflix. I did one episode and stunt coordinated with Wanda Sykes.

Actor Tom Cruise is known for performing daring stunts in his movies. What is your craziest stunt?

All the stunts are challenging,

and you constantly have to think with a level of safety. It is the number one priority for me. The most difficult, I would say, would be in the movie Eraser doubling Vanessa Williams; all four chains were supposed to explode on the cargo container, and they did not, and they waited till the last minute to do that particular stunt where the cargo container was to drop. I was on there with James Caan's stunt double Peter Canton. We are friends to this day, and that's the one thing I love about the stunt community is that we're a family. We stick together no matter what. So, all four chains were supposed to explode. We tested everything––the stunt coordinator and myself and James Caan's double; we prayed, and the next thing I knew, I was swinging through the air, a hundred feet in the air turning back and forth, and the dew had set on the sparks which sent it off balance. I'm in San Pedro, where I grew up. I'm looking at all these stars and looking around, and I'm shaking like a rag doll back and forth, and the chains are 1000 pound thick chains hitting me in my head and all over the place. That was the most challenging, and it was at the very beginning of my career.

Jennifer Lopez, Taraji P. Henson, Regina King, and Gabrielle Union, to name a few. Which was your most memorable experience?

I’m good friends with Lisa Raye and have contact with Yvette Nicole Brown, whom I double a lot. I’ve developed relationships with many of the actresses I’ve doubled; however, I noticed as decades passed that everybody has a different journey and way they go, but when you’re in it, and you’re still doubling for people regularly, friendships do happen.

Which actor or actress would you love to work on a movie with and why?

I just worked with Mark Wahlberg, which was awesome, but I wish I could work with Tyler Perry just one more time and Johnny Depp. I loved the opportunity to work with Wahlberg in Las Vegas because I like working in Vegas. It's always fun.

How does your family feel about the work you do?

You doubled for numerous high-profile celebrities, including Halle Berry,

My mother passed away in 2008. I had no idea that my mother did not want me doing stunts until after she died; she was the type of mother that, no matter what I did, was always supportive, and my mother let me make mistakes. She was just always

there to catch me when things would happen.

Who would be your choice if someone could double for you in a

Phedra Syndelle. I’ve been watching her; it would be her if someone were to stunt double for me.

You are an accomplished singer, dancer, and actress that toured with Al B. Sure and Brandy. What is something else people may not know about your career?

When I toured with Al B. Sure, we went all over the world back then, which was absolutely amazing; he's like my little bro. He is a friend of mine to this day. I was also on the “I Wanna Be Down” tour with Brandy. What I know about this industry is that you cannot be one dimensional because the entertainment industry is filled with multi-talented and faceted people. Another mentor of mine, taught me to stick to one thing first, and that’s when I only did stunts, but then the acting, dancing, modeling jobs came later. I’ve danced with the Black Ballet Jazz and even learned dance from the famous Nicholas Brothers.

What advice do you have for women who want to become stunt coordinators?

Train and keep training. I've been in this industry for a long time. Train and know more than you know and stay prepared is my advice.

“A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” is a movie favorite for many.

There was a stunt mishap on set for you back then working with Regina King.

Regina King is one of the most genuine people I've ever met in my life, but I have not been in touch with her in recent years, and Martin Lawrence was one of the most professional people I've met. Fun fact: I used to be an assistant casting director on Martin. So, on A Thin Line Between Love and Hate, I heard the Holy Spirit speak to me. I was about to jump out the window (remember that scene with Martin Lawrence, Regina King, and Lynn Whitfield), and I heard, if you jump out that window, you will die. There was something about that moment (that made me listen to the warning). Especially because I knew another stunt person, Sonja Davis, who died on the set of Vampire in Brooklyn, and I had always promised to be awakened and in touch with what I heard from God. I remember I went to Regina, crying, tears coming down my face, and I told her I couldn't do the stunt, so they called in someone else. I was worried that I would never work again and that my career would be over, but I'm glad I was obedient to what I heard because who knows what might have happened.

With such a physically demanding career. How do you like to replenish?

I love Dr. Teal's bath. I also do lavender, hemp, CBD, and Epsom salt because of the number of injuries I've had over the years, so I must practice self care. I get a massage once a month. I'm trying

to implement not eating beef and pork, and as I get older, eating more fruits and vegetables and exercising every day. I walk forty minutes a day, and I do sit ups and planks. I garden. I love spending time with my husband. I like giving back and doing mission work overseas, and I like being there to support others.

Dr. Cindy Trimm wants people to exist in their “enoughness.” The sought-after global influencer, stateswoman, and international achievement guru spoke about it in a sit‑down interview at the Westin Oaks at The Galleria Hotel in Houston in late June. Beautiful in a vibrant kaftan dress, her immaculately styled hair falling just below the shoulders, Dr. Trimm is the ever poised transformational leader you'd imagine. The hint of sunlight from the large window we sat next to complemented the brightness in the eyes of a woman whose "everyday language empowers individuals to activate purpose and maximize potential.” In the Bayou City for the Kingdom School of Ministry event, the best selling author hosted a week long educational experience with the mission to prepare capable men and women to excel in both the marketplace and in ministry, no matter their previous education. Here we briefly discuss her new book “Unstoppable” and what it means for men and women post pandemic.

Dr. Cindy Trimm. How are you?

On top of the world!

You authored your recent book "Unstoppable," with a foreword by motivational speaker Les Brown. How will this read help people living in a post-pandemic world?

Post pandemic offered such a challenge not just to individuals but to families, communities, industries, and nations period. A lot of people didn't know how to navigate the new normal, and when things change and seasons change, so should your strategy, and we never faced anything like this before. We went from brick and mortar to click and order. Social media was one of the most important contri butions of technology (then and now) because people were redefining their brands. Everything altered for every one of us. The pandemic challenged us all to think differently. Talk about disruptive thinking. Everything was disrupted in the pandemic, and we emerged from it, but how we did life before changed. We needed new skills and new opportunities. We needed new mindsets and a new educational system so that we could deal with the technological age that we're living in so; it placed a heavy demand on educational institutions as well. Churches found it challenging because we were moving from in person to technology. Many churches were unprepared for that, so when I wrote the book Unstoppable, I should have written unstockable—the ability to move stock in our thinking primarily and how we approach problems.

Problems haven't come for us as a demise, but to announce that it's time for us to emerge and that there is some potential on the inside of us that is demanding expression and what better time than now for each one of us not only to acquire the skills and the new skills but to be redefined by who we are not just as people but who we are as human beings and as a collective.

Exchanging hugs with affirming words that we would see each other again, Dr. Cindy Trimm headed off to empower a crowd of attendees awaiting their unstoppable moments.

Atlanta is home to many, whether born and raised or transplanted forever we love Atlanta, a city with ample opportunity and traffic. While there’s no place like home, you need a change of scenery to disconnect from the routine and get away. Exploring the geography of this beautiful state is a fantastic way to soak in the scenery and take a break from the hustle and grind of the metro Atlanta area. The question is, where can one have such an affordable experience and not too far away? The answer is the Getaway Chattahoochee Cabins in Sucches, GA. The drive up is picturesque, and once you arrive at your cabin, you will feel your stress begin to melt away in the quiet, quaint, yet modern (minus the technology) cabin.

This escape is worth experiencing at least once, especially at the unsustainable pace most people live, and you will likely be planning your next getaway before the one you are on concludes. Rest is essential to a healthy life. Unplugging for a day or more will do more good than harm mentally

and physically. For those of you who may be feeling a bit skeptical, perhaps you are thinking, what would I do out in the woods without WiFi and limited to no cell phone reception? The answer is NOTHING. The primary goal of founders Jon Staff and his college friend, Pete Davis, is to disconnect from your schedule and reconnect with yourself, your spouse (or life partner), and nature. It truly is the simple things that can have the most significant impact on our lives. The folks at Getaway make your stay a breeze from booking to check in and check out. You can bring your food, purchase a sustenance kit, or have groceries delivered via the local grocery store to cook meals in the ideal kitchenette with top tier cookware or cook over a campfire with your own fire pit outside your cabin with heavy duty aluminum also provided. This trip is hassle free with its reasonable nightly rates, cozy accommodations, and complimentary smores kits awaiting your arrival. You can’t help but feel the good natured energy of Tammy Townsend. The actress says she wants people always to feel safe and to be their authentic selves without judgment when around her. The star of the new BET+ Dramedy “Average Joe” shares in a conversation the many sides of Tammy, including the advice she would give to her younger self, her love for adventure, the woman she has become think, part warrior spirit and part glam, and the gratitude she feels for a longstanding career as a performer that has her back on the small screen starring opposite comedian and actor Deon Cole.

You co-star in the new BET+ dramedy show "Average Joe" with Deon Cole. How did the role come about?

It happened through the normal channels of my agent and manager, who brought me the script. It was for the role of Angela Washington, the wife of the lead character Joe Washington played by comedian and actor Deon Cole. I read over the script and thought it was really good and thank God. I got it.

What are you most excited about for the new show?

It is the blending of drama and comedy with an extra side of dark edge for both.

How do you like working with Deon Cole? Did you get through your scenes with him on set without laughing? Because we all know how funny he is.

It’s funny because we didn’t lose it much through the scenes. Only very seldom did we break out of character. I will say that Deon likes to tell these great stories, ordinary stories, and flip them into something extraordinary. Like the time he talked about snakes. He said, “I’m so scared of snakes; you can rob me with one.” Who thinks to say something like that (laugh)?

Dark comedy usually tackles serious topics to watch with humor. What challenges do you welcome with your character being relatable to viewers?

My character’s fierce loyalty to her family makes her relatable. She will do whatever it takes to protect them; sometimes, that protection can cross the line (the legal lines). It’s a question of how far you would go to protect and be loyal to your family.

What are some things you consider when taking on acting roles?

30 | BSM MAGAZINE | BSMANDMEDIA.COM

Does it speak to me creatively? Will it challenge me? Is it well written? And probably the last thing, which I should be concerned with most but not, is who’s in it (film or television)? For me, as an actress, it’s more about whether the people are talented than the clout of who they are.

Speaking of roles, one of your most popular ones, you played Eddie Winslow's girlfriend Greta on 'Family Matters.' Are you surprised people still remember you as Myrtle Urkel's rival because those scenes that featured both of you were hilarious?

Yes! Family Matters is the show I am most known for to date, even though I've done a bunch of different projects. Most people know me from there. Jaleel White, (Steve Urkel), who also played the character of Mrytle, is comedy gold. The show’s writers and producers had us doing all these outlandish scenes with Jaleel and me, and I've joked about it often to my fans that aside from playing on Family Matters, y'all do know, I've

been working for a long time (laugh). But Family Matters is an iconic show. I get why people remember me most by it.

As a veteran actress who can also sing and dance. How have you maintained your versatility and range as a performer?

I’m always trying to learn new things, educate myself. I don’t want to settle in my career. To dial things in, I like to stay open and absorb the world around me because I think our jobs as artists are to observe and retain so we can create from it in ways most people don’t think about. The more you know, the better you become.

OWN's acclaimed drama series "Queen Sugar" ended in the fall of 2022. What did you like most about your character "Billie?"

I loved Billie's metamorphosis. You saw in the series her story, where she was a broken young girl (who had to deal with the shame of being sexually assaulted and the lies told that

ousted her by family and friends) and how she came back an accomplished woman ready to face her fears.

What are your thoughts having worked with acclaimed filmmaker and director Ava Duvernay?

Ava Duvernay: Part of her legacy is employing all female directors on Queen Sugar for all seven seasons. She opened the door for a lot of my friends who were struggling African American women of color directors, so definitely kudos to that part. I believe Ava is what we call a great actor’s director. She knows how to speak to actors and how to get the best performances out of them, and she really does her work in terms of understanding the story, knowing each character and how they would react to certain things, and that made a difference in terms of someone saying, here, go over there instead, Ava got in the heads of the characters and the actors. It shows in the performances of the people she directs.

You directed a short called The Counselor.

Yes, that was my directing debut on the "ALLBLK" network. I enjoyed it. Now is it for me in the future (laugh)? I don't know. It's a lot of components that go into directing. The director is not only trying to get his or her vision across, but they're also trying to get the actors to make sure that they capture the theme of the movie or show while keeping the actors, writers, and producers happy. That's a lot of people to make happy. I'm not sure if that's my thing (laugh).

If you could go back and speak to your younger self, what would you say about the person you have become and are still becoming today?

I would tell my younger self that you are too hard on yourself. Give yourself the same grace that you extend to other people. I’m still working on that.

Inspired by the former First Lady Michelle Obama’s new book, “The Light We Carry,” what light does Tammy Townsend carry?

My ability to make people safe. And they’re heard and can be their true selves without any judgment.

What is something in pop culture that has happened that made you take a pause and appreciate life a bit more?

I would say the passing of D.C. Young Fly’s wife, Jacky Oh (Jacklyn Smith). She was so young. 32 years old. If that is not the biggest lesson to live your life to the fullest because no day is ever promised, I don’t know what is.

From the EP to the creator to the cast, you gave reasons in an Instagram post why the people you work with on "Average Joe" are who they are. Why is giving people their flowers something we should all practice?

Letting people know they inspire you and acknowledging their presence makes a difference in the world and is sometimes the fuel that folks need to keep pushing and progressing forward.

You are an outdoor enthusiast with a love for adventure.

Yes, I am an adrenaline junkie. “Any cliffs with a large body of water, I’m jumping” (laugh). Hiking, snowboarding, 4 wheel driving, and flyboarding, I love it all.

What makes 'Average Joe' worth watching for viewers?

It will take you on a wild ride. And you will never be able to predict what’s coming around the corner. You’re going to laugh. You’re going to cry. You are going to get pissed. You’re going to scream (all from this show), and the best part is that it’s based on a true story.

What inspired your energy during the photoshoot?

I wanted to show the many sides of a woman. The playful little girl. The polished lady of the world. And the inner warrior who protects both. And with those affirmations, Tammy danced to old school music of TLC in the background.

Watch Season 1 of “Average Joe” through August on BET+

The Confidence Code to Summer

ummer is here! And that may also mean so is a newfound desire to start dating again. Warmer weather, striking sunsets, fun outdoor activities, and cute sundresses this kind of effortless enchantment writes itself. While the scene may seem a bit too "picture perfect," you may be feeling a little less elated and a lot more intimidated by the reality.

Let's face it. Dating can be challenging. It is why you want to do everything in your power to show up as the most confident version of yourself when that cute barista finally asks you out on a date. By showing up with confidence, you exude a more peaceful presence, open mind, and assured sense of self. These are all stunning attributes to naturally develop authentic connections and lines of chemistry.

On the other hand, showing up frazzled, uncertain, and riddled with anxiety can slam the door shut on this natural attraction factor without even realizing it. Think about it: when you're uncomfortable and picking at your nails or are distracted thinking about your ex, you're not able to receive what's actually happening in the present moment. You'll notice you missed just about everything your date said, started saying things you didn't really mean, and maybe even began to ramble on about how awful your last date was.

While this can feel liberating to release and create a false sense of connection, it doesn't always leave the best impression. So how can you set yourself up for success before a first date? Try these hot tips...

1. Take Inventory.

This is the hard part because it requires radical honesty with yourself. Take 30 minutes and find a quiet area to journal. Use this time to reflect on where you're at emotionally. Do you feel ready to date? If you just went through a brutal breakup or find yourself not quite done with a situationship, it's always good to process these feelings ahead of time before getting involved with someone else. This is not to say you should cancel your date if these experiences ring true. Rather, use this information to assess how it may affect your confidence to show up as your best self. Remember, only you know you best!

2. Recite Affirmations.

We all have insecurities... that's just human nature. However, we don't want to let these little monsters run the show! Before your date,

jot down your three biggest insecurities that you find constantly robbing you of joy. Now, write down three affirmations that counteract these thoughts. For example, if one of your insecurities is "I have bad acne. I'm so ugly!" transform this thought by reciting a positive affirmation over and over again. In this case, a positive affirmation could be, "I am beautiful in mind, body, and spirit." Where our focus goes, energy flows! Direct yours wisely.

3. Cute &

Comfortable.

It is the golden standard when it comes to picking out the perfect outfit. Select your outfit a couple of days in advance to alleviate any last minute stress with the 'what do I wear' drama. The confidence code here is to feel amazing in your own skin. Time to press pause on any clothing items that are super cute, but you can't stand the way they fit (we all have that "someday" capsule lingering in the depths of our closet). If you've ever had on a dress that kept scrunching up or jeans that didn't fit quite right around the hips, you know the level of irritation and distraction that causes. Don't allow yourself to unravel at the seams before the date begins!

With these three tips on the top of your mind, you'll be ready to date and, better yet, feel good about it! And remember, in the words of the iconic Blake Lively: "The most beautiful thing you can wear is confidence."

So rock it, girl!

DR. JOY

Media' La Trisha McIntosh and La Tasha

Hi Dr. Joy, we love the tagline on your website, 'You can find me at the intersection of Psychology and pop culture' How are the two connected regarding mental health and where it stands today?

We are seeing more and more depictions of and conversations about mental health in pop culture, and these conversations need to be based on factual information. My role as a Psychologist is to help the public understand what they may be watching and listening to and how it may apply to their lives. Additionally, having more pop culture conversations about mental health helps destigmatize it and makes the information more accessible.

You host the award-winning mental health podcast 'Therapy for Black Girls' What have you seen in your work that would focus on why black girls, in particular, should also seek therapy? And at what age should black girls be seeking treatment?

I use the term “girls” in Therapy for Black Girls as a nod to how Black women and girls refer to one another using the word. The show is really about how we can expand our knowledge about mental health at every age. Many of us can benefit from therapy at various points in life, whether to aid in managing a mental illness

or for more insight oriented work.

Talk to us about mental wellness versus mental illness. Are we confused or misusing the two terms in society?

As a society, we have historically talked strictly about mental illness, which has resulted in us neglecting conversations about mental wellness. Our mental health exists along a spectrum. There are, of course, essential things we need to know about how to manage a mental illness. Still, there is also a lot to discuss regarding our mental wellness, including conversations about things like sleep hygiene, boundary setting, and developing a support system.

Congratulations! You released your first book 'Sisterhood Heals' on June 27, 2023. The title lends itself to many conversations between women, and relationships between women are often not always healthy or celebrated because of past trauma, triggers, jealousy, etc. Why is it essential to form a sisterhood for healing?

Connection is the remedy to much of what ails us. Our connections to other women allow us to soften. They allow us to have greater knowledge of ourselves. They allow us to be seen truly and enable us to support and be supported. In our relationships, we can create space to heal from past hurts.

Your book also talks about safe spaces for women and the lack of resources that would allow the sisterhood to show up authentically; why do you feel the rooms are not more common, and what is your hope to combat this issue?

The rooms are uncommon because many systems are invested in us, not forming alliances and supporting one another. I hope that we become more aware of the systems at play to divide us––to become champions for one another. In

couples counseling, we talk a lot about helping couples to realize they are fighting against the problem, not one another. The same is true for our relationships with our sisters.

What about black women (focusing on gender and race) that some people choose not to understand? And what is one piece of advice you have for maintaining the sisterhood bond to avoid division?

I think it’s important to remember that a rising tide lifts all boats. We are often fed the idea that only one Black girl can make it to the top when we know that’s not true. I think it’s vital for us to reimagine some of the spaces we’ve found ourselves in that have been limiting and exclusive to build new ones that are affirming and expansive.

Can you offer a fun exercise women can participate in to maintain a positive sisterhood circle?

I have a quiz at sisterhoodheals. com/quiz that lets you discover your role in your sister circle, the wallflower, peacemaker, firecracker, or leader. This can be a fun way to learn more about how you show up in your groups but also an excellent way to start a conversation with your circle about the dynamics of the group and how everyone can ensure they are getting their needs met in the process.

Dr. Joy, you show up for mental health for countless people through your platform, but how do you show up for yourself to maintain your mental wellness?

Meetings with my therapist are critical in helping me take care of my mental health. I also have an excellent support system that allows me to disconnect and remember to play.

What's next for Dr. Joy? And with summer in full bloom, what is your summer vibe for mental health in 2023?

It’s giving a summer of sisterhood! I want to enjoy conversing with sisters across the country, celebrating who we are to one another, and discussing ways to strengthen our relationships. I also want to embrace the joy of this moment and stay as present as possible.

*Thank you, Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, for your work and all you do to bring healing light to sisterhood, black girls, and mental wellness. Having this space and time with you on earth is an absolute joy. May God continue to bless your journey in the healing process of His people. We hope you are okay with it, as this was in our spirit to share.

Grateful for these sentiments! Thank you, La Trisha and La Tasha!

age Kennedy jokes. He likes looking at himself. That is, at least during our recent Zoom conversation with the “Upshaws" actor. Many may or may not kow he’s a thespian. A Shakespearean‑trained actor whose first love is rap. From sneaking onto a CBS studio lot posing as a mail courier early in his career to his expansive vocabulary as a self described wordsmith, Page has an infectious energy that has him following his dreams, like with new music and a new movie happening simultaneously.

In 2017, you reached a point in your professional life where you focused on your first love and passion for rap music. What was it during this time that made you decide to take this journey?

I had already been doing music often. It’s just that the climate we were in did not allow me to be able to distribute this music how I wanted, and for a long time, it’s either you had a record deal, or you had to, you know, burn up physical copies and sell them out of the trunk of your car. The internet did not provide a space where you could circulate it to the world readily, so in 2017, I had already built up a fan base for my name on Vine. I got pretty popular on that platform, and I just took that knowledge and fan base, and then I decided to introduce people to my music. So that’s why I was able to start putting out projects because, at that point, you didn’t need a record label to put your projects out.

The release of your brand-new album in August, "A Book of Pages." What can listeners expect?

It's a diversity of music topics; you have songs for the ladies. I have a song for my lady called 'Her Song.' It's a throwback to the early 2000s like Ja Rule and Ashanti type feel, and it's just a feel good vibe song that the ladies and the fellows will love. I come from a lyrical background as a wordsmith, so I have songs on there that are just straight bars, like witty bars that people know me for—my core fans. I have stories on there; I have social commentary and things that are going on in my life, so it's an array of different elements you get on this project, and that's why it's A Book of Pages because it's all faces of me.

What was it like working with Method Man on the song 'Pain?' Who would you like to work with in music in the future?

Method Man, that's my boy! I've known him since maybe'95 or'96 because I opened for Meth and Wu‑Tang at the Grand Rapids Community College when I was in school, Redman was there, so I met those guys then, and fast forward and living in Los Angeles, Method Man and I were on an episode of CSI together. Ironically, I was the rapper, and he played my assistant (laugh), and we would see each other in all different parts of the world. I remember them bringing me out on stage in New Zealand while filming the first 'Meg' and again in Los Angeles; it was just time because we had never actually been on a song together, and I know that this song is called 'Pain,' and I was like, let me reach out to Meth to see if he would bless me, and he also blessed me again with coming to do the video so that was a good look.

There are tons of music artists that I would like to work with, but foremost is Eminem; he is my favorite rapper, and he's been my favorite rapper for a very long time, but there are tons of people

I would love to rock with like Jadakiss, Drake. I would love to work with Jay Z and Nas. Because I'm a man of a certain age (Page will turn 47 in November), there is a particular demographic of music I just am drawn to, and it is that 90s early 2000s sound that was kind of my heyday, so rappers from that time we still have the symbiotic sound.

You have an impressive acting resume, most recently known for your work on the Netflix comedy, The Upshaws as "Duck." What memorable moments have you liked playing the role, and can you share a fun time with your cast members?

I loved playing Duck; he was a fun character to play. I intentionally made him different than me because it is so easy for me to do it the usual way, and that is playing a guy who has been in prison that long. Still, I just wanted to give him his own sound and movement and feel for what that character could look like. I love being on that set because it's like a family there. You know, everybody is so close to one another. We all had a good time dancing and laughing, and it was fun working with those guys Mike Epps, Kim Fields, Wanda Sikes, and the entire cast.

You snuck onto a studio lot in 2001, posing as a mail courier, which landed you your first-ever audition for the CBS comedy The Kennedys. Do you feel that same "hunger" or energy

is missing today, namely with social media?

I don't know if it's missing; I think it goes along with the vicissitudes of time. We have become malleable to whatever the juncture is of what's happening in the world. Before 9/11, it was more accessible to do things like (sneak on a studio lot hoping to get an audition), but you can't do that now. And people's hunger is just in a different way now. Social media has become like that, allowing every man to be the man now, and that wasn't the case before. You can be a kid in Arkansas and garner an audience based on whatever it is you have to offer, as before, you wouldn't have a platform to do that, so I think there's still a hunger; it just resonates in a different form now.

Next, you will be in the highly anticipated Warner Bros. summer movie "Meg 2: The Trench," a sequel to the blockbuster "The Meg" in 2018, expanding your role of 'DJ.' Tell us more about your character and why people should see the film.

People should go to see the film because this film is alright! I can't wait to see it again; I saw it for the first time with my family at the premiere, and I was nervous because sequels are tough when you have an original story. A lot of times, it's difficult to supplant that, but this sequel feels different than the first one, where I felt like it wasn't taken that seriously, so it was kind of like a fun popcorn film to me then. This one is like a real movie; it still has elements of that popcorn feel at certain parts, like towards

the end, where it gets fun and crazy, and chaotic. Still, there is a time in the trench area when this is like a real suspenseful movie that you're on the edge of your seat and holding your breath just like they are; you know this movie is just a complete ride; it is a quintessential summer blockbuster film that you take your entire family to. Then you go back again next weekend because it's that much fun!

With a summer album and movie release happening around the same time, what would you say is your summer vibe for 2023?

My vibe is like happiness, an amentiferous summer, an awesome summer. I need it to be propitious; I need it to be a felicitated summer that is beautiful and radiant. I feel like this movie and this album have all the hopes of that occurring and happening, so I’m all smiles in anticipation.

We joked with the father of four that we needed a dictionary after our conversation with him, to which the actor and rapper leaned back in his chair and laughed as he appreciated and thanked us for the time, all the while complimenting what he said were our infectious smiles and us congratulating him on living out his dreams. @pagekennedy
