ONLINE DISTANCE LEARNING The future of education will not be totally classroom-oriented following an announcement made on 9 Dec 2012 by Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar, Minister of Education on the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a tool to develop the country's human resource. The Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Council has outlined criteria for Online Distance Learning (ODL) courses following the titah of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in September this year.

The three criteria for ODL include blended mode of study, referring to both face-to-face and online; that conditions of entry, duration, course content are similar with courses taken full-time and Masters and PhD courses are not professional fields that require hands-on or practical experiences such as medicine, engineering and architecture.

With global challenges in the 21st century, the minister emphasised that the people of Brunei should equip themselves with relevant and current knowledge including the ability to produce new knowledge, possess skills as well as ICT know-how. Source: Borneo Bulletin, 10 Dec 2012

BLA EXCO MEETINGS

ADVANCED DIPLOMA OF INFORMATION/LIBRARY SERVICES

Zuriani binti Chuchu and Dyg.Amalina binti Awang Haji Ahmad The four of us former students of National Diploma in Information and Library Management of Maktab Teknik Sultan Saiful Rijal, Brunei Darussalam namely Dyg. Zuriani binti Chuchu-ND/ILM06 Amalina binti Haji Ahmad – ND/ILM06 (private student) Sarinah binti Haji Kula (in service)-ND/ILM/03 – librarian at Maktab Duli - ND/ILM06 and Nur Amanina Auni binti Abdullah - ND/ILM/05 graduated with an Advanced Diploma of Information/Library Services from the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT), Australia. The convocation was held at the Auditorium, Music Industry Centre, J Block, Canberra Institute of Technology, Australia on 11 December 2012.

Dyg Zuriani and Dyg. Nina began the course in Feb 2012 to 12 Dec 2012 while Dyg Amalina and Dyg Sarinah from July 2011 to 12 June 2012. We were able to undertake a fast-track of the two year course because graduates of the National Diploma awarded

by BDTVEC are recognised as having completed some subjects that are equivalent to CIT’s Certificate III, Certificate IV and Diploma of Information and Library Services.

I am Dyg Zuraini. Before I go on, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my friends and families who have supported me throughout my studies and not forgetting the Government of Brunei Darussalam under Ministry of Education for granting me the scholarship to study in Canberra, Australia.

Being in Australia in itself presents a unique opportunity for me to gain new experiences. While some were tough to endure, most were eye openers. The environment of the institute motivated me in my studies and the lecturers were helpful in clearing my confusions over some topics and readings I came across in my studies. Other students were friendly and helpful too especially during group studies. When I have free time after doing my assignments, there is never a shortage of activities to relieve stress. At times I would go exploring with my friends and witness for myself the different cultures and ways of life of the locals. All in all, it makes up for a very memorable experience that I would never forget.

All these experiences have influenced my way of thinking. I feel that my perspective of thinking have grown, allowing me to see or think of an issue or problem from several angles for a solution. Adapting and keeping up with the new environment have contributed to this. Now I feel more confident in taking up new challenges in the future and learn something from it the same way as I have done here in Canberra. I am proud of these experiences and hope that I could use it to develop libraries in Brunei Darussalam.

I am Dyg Amalina and it is my turn to share my experiences. First of all I would like to express how very thankful I am that I have obtained my Advanced Diploma at CIT. It was very tough as I went through the thick and thin during the course not to forget, I am proud that I completed the course with the full support from both of my parents. Lastly, I want to encourage my fellow juniors and others to further their studies.

Both of us joined in thanking BLA for its continuous support throughout our studies.

DISCUSSION BETWEEN BLA AND LIBRARY DBP BRUNEI

A meeting was held on 27 Nov 2012 at the Class 64 Library .to discuss the forthcoming International Reading Conference to be held early 2013 by Library Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei in cooperation with BLA. The meeting was chaired by Awg Hj Sahari Hj Nassar, Chief Librarian DBP and attended by Pn Nellie BLA President and officers from both organisations.

The preliminary discussion focused on proposed theme of the conference, speakers, tracks and formation of the Organising Committee.

BLA BRIEFING FOR AGM ORGANISING COMMITTEE A briefing session with the AGM Organising Committee was held on 8 Dec 2012 to discuss roles and responsibilities of the various committees.

STUDY VISIT TO THAMMASAT UNIVERSITY AND LIBRARY

My colleague Dyg Nur Nadzirah and myself were fortunate to join Pn Nellie, BLA President to participate in the International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries (IATUL) and Thammasat University Libraries Workshop with the theme on “Innovation Management: What’s now & What’s next” on 8-9 November 2012 at Pathumwan Princess Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. It was an interesting workshop and while in Bangkok we visited two libraries namely the TK Park (known as Thailand Knowledge Park) situated at Central World- a busy shopping mall; and the Thammasat University Library. My colleague Dyg Nur Nadzirah has written about our visit to TK Park in the previous issue. Now it is my turn to write about our visit to Thammasat University and its Library.

Thammasat University The main campus Tha Prachan is located in Bangkok’s Rattanakosin district, a riverside island in the heart of the old city. The university is surrounded

by Thailand’s most famous cultural and historical landmarks such as the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the National Museum and the National Theatre. Thammasat University is one of many public university in Thailand and founded by Pridi Banomyong, the former Prime Minister of Thailand. What is extra unique about this library is that it is built 3 floors underground.

The Library The Thammasart University is a wonderful library named Pridi Banomyong Library which was established along with the university itself and located next to the Faculty of Economics and directly faces the Chao Phraya River and it is at the first basement building.

The Pridi Banomyong Library has undertaken efforts to introduce a library culture aimed at developing positive attitude and behavior among its users, so that the library facilities and resources are utilized effectively by all users, particularly by the staff and students of the university.

Library Collection The library resources are mostly categorized into different types of collection, thus, it has 3 sections with an extensive collection of more than 2 million books, journals and other related materials. Moreover, the library has their own library system which shows books in circulation, with roughly 50,000 volumes being added each year in General Collection among the branches of Tha Prachan and other information centres.

Uniquely about this library, its audiovisual collection comprises 13,000 CDs; 10,000 DVDs and microfilms for the users’ entertainment. Latest DVD movies are bought and added regularly.Go to page 6.

From page 5 On the 1st basement floor of the library is the General Collection where the users can borrow books, meanwhile the audiovisual or electronic collections and newspaper bindings are located at 2nd and 3rd basement floors.

Students of Thammasat University are allowed to borrow books from up to 20 books per 15 day for undergraduates; meanwhile for higher degree students are allowed to borrow books up to 40 books per 15 day. Fines of 5 baht per day are charged for each book that had been returned late.

Library Facilities The Pridi Banomyong Library provides facilities for the users use such as: Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) The library has a large number of carefully managed OPAC terminals for searching the library catalogue. The OPAC stations are situated on the 1st basement of the library.

Microfilms This library provides microfilm machine reader, located at the 2nd basement floor.

Audiovisual Equipment

Audiovisual equipment are available on the 3rd basement floor and it is used for multimedia items. In this section, this library serves users with more than 200 original and copyrighted movies in CD and DVD format for entertainment. Furthermore, the CDs and DVDs can only be used within the library. Go to page 7

From page 6 Computer stations There are about 30 computers available for users’ use in this library with high speed internet access for free in the Digital Library area. For those students who are willing to bring their own laptop, they will be given special password for free for them to use the internet browser.

The library also provides facilities such as document scanning and printing services for the benefit of all users.

I wish to direct my special acknowledgements and gratitude to the librarians and the guides of the Thammasat University Library and also to the Brunei Darussalam Library Association for the opportunity for me to join the workshop in Bangkok, Thailand. The interesting workshop and the enjoyable visits to the library have widen my understanding of the library culture of other countries which I will share with my colleagues in Brunei Darussalam.

The inaugural environment award for golf courses sustainability in the Asia Pacific was introduced at the 2012 Asia Pacific Golf Summit in Brunei Darussalam. The award, tagged as “The Custodian Of The Environment” was presented by the Government of Brunei Darussalam and endorsed by the International Council for Sustainability and Audubon Lifestyles. The award is an initiative that was to give recognition to golf courses in the Asia Pacific for their efforts to promote environmentally sustainable golf facilities.
