2. To find out any Information Literacy programs or services in Brunei's Public Library

3. To discover the public librarians' perceptions on the teaching role in regard to Information Literacy in Brunei's public library.

4. To investigate the public librarians' perceptions on the challenges in providing Information Literacy services in Brunei's public library.

THE IMPORTANCE OF INFORMATION LITERACY TO PUBLIC LIBRARIES “Schools and universities can provide information literacy support and instruction during years of formal education but do not serve individuals in the subsequent years of informal or self-directed study or life. As information literacy is a lifelong skill, public libraries are perfectly positioned to be a ‘constant presence throughout people’s lives,’ and able to provide ongoing support to individuals in developing information literacy skills” (Harding, 2008) “All citizens need their own internal navigation system to manage the information rich environment that now surround them. Citizens who lack the ability to find, evaluate and use information effectively may be left behind in terms of job opportunities, lifelong learning, quality of life and even access to basic services” (G.Anday, 2006)

FINDINGS & DISCUSSION 1 What are Brunei public librarians’ understanding on the term of Information Literacy (IL)?

Never heard the IL term before 28%

Confusions around the concept of IL

Able to define the basic full term of IL 6%

• It is common that many public librarians do not understand the concept of IL (Lewis, n.d.; Bruce and Lampson, 2002; Hart, 2006; Hall, 2009; Widdowson & Smart, 2013)

• Confusion between “Literasi Maklumat” and “Literasi” • DBP Library Mission is to empower reading cultureDBP Public librarian were focused on developing reading program than IL
