As you read this edition of Century II, I hope what you see reminds you of your days as a student formed by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, and I hope your faith is buoyed by the accomplishments of our current Crusaders and those who have most recently joined the ranks of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni AmeturAssociation.CorJesu!

Dear Brother Martin Family,

In forming young people through education, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart believe in the pattern of Hope, Love, and Faith rather than the traditional pattern of Faith, Hope, and Love. In the words of Brother Bernard Couvillion, S.C., “we give hope, human life, human relationships, and human success, and then faith comes.”

Message from the President

“Everything ought to sparkle with cleanliness: the children, the workshops, the kitchen, the refectory, and especially the dormitories...The world which only takes account of the exterior will have little regard for the interior if all these things were to be neglected.” Father André Coindre, S.C., April 29, 1823

School leadership has also begun the initial phases of a five-year strategic plan. A steering committee is directing the gathering of input from various constituent groups, starting with the faculty this past spring. Upcoming focus groups will include current students, current parents, and alumni. The goal of the strategic plan is a careful analysis of the effectiveness of current programs and facilities in order to recommend specific improvements needed to meet our mission statement, which itself is under review by the faculty. The strategic plan will lead to a facilities master plan to envision and execute future campus improvements.

At our annual Leadership Celebration in May, at which time our school community celebrates the accomplishments of our student body that encompasses Christian service, extracurricular and athletic prowess, and academic accomplishment, I spoke to our Crusader families about the importance, the power, and the necessity of their son’s servant leadership throughout his years at Brother Martin. The Leadership Celebration is a formative event for our school because it encourages our students to continue to respond to God’s call to use their gifts to serve their community and, we think, it inspires our students to commit to the values inherent in compassion, justice, and service.

Ametur Cor Mariae!

Message from the Principal

This saying certainly applies to life at Brother Martin High School in 2022. The “regard for the interior” refers to all the improvements we continually make to provide the best programs and facilities to meet our students’ needs. We will never settle for “good enough.” We want to be the best for our students, and that means evaluating everything we do and making intentional plans for improvements. Our mission statement explicitly calls attention to the importance of recognizing and responding to changes in our midst: we form students “to meet the needs of our changing world.”

Our students today are not unlike the students who walked the hallways of St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, and Brother Martin High School in its infancy. Some of our students understand this call to service from the moment they step foot on campus, and others learn it over time. Regardless, we are confident that by the time our students graduate, they have it, and they are ready to embark on the next chapter of their lives as well-rounded and prepared men who respond to God’s love.

Not only do we have hope in and for our young men, but we also have hope because of these young Crusaders. Brother Martin High School is fifty-three years old. The Brothers of the Sacred Heart have spent 153 years in New Orleans. The institution itself was born in Lyon, France just over 200 years ago. Our Church is over 2,000 years old. As I addressed our student leaders in May of 2022, I couldn’t help but reflect on the power, importance, and necessity of these institutions in our lives, institutions that stand strong today because of Kingsmen and Crusaders who have led our student body for over 150 years. I have faith that our school will stand strong over the next century because of the young men who lead our school today.

The first-floor resource center is being significantly upgraded to reflect the work on the second-floor resource center that took place as part of Phase III. All new furniture that allows students to work in pairs and groups will be in place in both resource centers at the start of the new school year.

Gregory M. Rando ’77, President

What remains constant is our respect for the traditions of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart which translates to our commitment to excellence in all areas. What changes are the ways we provide this excellence to our students. Thank you for being a part of our incredible story and our incredible growth moving forward.

As educators at Brother Martin responsible for continuing the educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, we have hope in our young people

because have faith in God. Many of us who read Century II are confident in that faith because we spent our formative days with the Brothers at Cor Jesu, St. Aloysius, or Brother Martin. Hope was placed in us; we were loved; and, thus, we grew in our faith. That tradition continues today.

2  Century II

To this end, we continually make facilities upgrades. The Robert Conlin Gymnasium is nearing completion of a major renovation that started with the installation of air conditioning and a new scoreboard several years ago, the replacement of the gym floor with a new wooden floor and all new painting and lighting this past spring, and the return of wooden bleachers, installed this summer. This vastly improved facility is now worthy of the school Masses, pep rallies, basketball games, and wrestling matches that routinely take place in this special place on campus.

If we need a reminder of why we do all that we do--and why we constantly evaluate, consider, and make plans for improvement--just look to our current student body and our increased enrollment as we welcome next school year the largest incoming 8th-grade class in the past 20 years!

Leslie and Larry Bouterie are members of The Historic New Orleans Collection. Leslie is a renowned ceramics expert who has provided collectionsmanagement and curatorial assistance to those National Historic Landmarks, and Larry, a computer systems expert and retired US Army lieutenant colonel, currently helps to maintain the electrical fencing that keeps the bears out of Monticello. Though the Bouteries have lived in Virginia and the DC area for nearly 40 years, New Orleans remains their homeland. As members of The Collection for more than a decade, the Bouteries have deepened their relationship over the years as they’ve watched their contributions go to work. “The first thing I would wonder, as a businessman, is, are you good stewards of your collections?” Larry says. “And when we would visit and go through the galleries, we would walk away thinking, ‘These people know what they’re doing.’” But stewardship, Leslie explains, goes beyond dollars and cents: “It’s not just money; it’s time, talent, and treasure. There’s a quote I love, from Sarah

The team elected two former Cor Jesu students as the co-captains: G Denis Indest and DE Ernest Chachere.

Broadmoor of Baton Rouge, ranked #3 in the state, eked out a 13-12 victory in a hard-fought game at Behrman Stadium in Algiers. The Buccaneers led 13-0 into

District play began against Rummel at East Jefferson Stadium. The Raiders jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Aided by a bad Raider snap from center, the Crimson and Gold pushed ahead 7-6 on FB David Frank’s four-yard run. A 91yard drive capped by Buddy Francioni’s one-yard plunge extended the lead to 14-6. But the second half belong to QB Norman Hodgins and the Rummel offense, which scored 19 unanswered points. Sabrio cranked up another touchdown drive to make the final score 25-21.

Due to a ruling by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, the 125 prospects from the two schools were not allowed to practice together nor even scrimmage each other. So the Aloysius students Kingsmen did the same at the other end.

Next up were the Jesuit Blue Jays. Senior Eddie Ezzell ran four kicks back for a total of 83 yards, the longest being a 34-yard punt return. The first Crusader score was set up when T Lyman Labry blocked a Jesuit punt. Three plays later, Sabrio fired to Hooks to tie the game at 7-7. But the Jays scored the next 12 points to lead 19-7 in the fourth quarter. Chris Ezzell sprinted 14 yards to cut to the margin to five points. Following a Jesuit punt, Sabrio marched the offense to the Jay 11 with a 39-yard pass to Hooks and a 30-yard swing pass to Chris Ezell. But the Blue Jays dug in and stopped four running plays to preserve the victory.Martinscored its third win of the season with a 20-6 defeat of St. Augustine on a Thursday night at Gormley. Sabrio turned in his top performance of the season, scoring twice on runs of 35 and six yards. He also completed 12 of 18 passes for 107 yards. Chris Ezzell got the other touchdown on a one-yard plunge.

Brother Martin’s First Football Season

the fourth quarter before a late Crusader rally almost pulled out the victory. Sabrio hit Ezzell for a 26-yard touchdown with 4:23 left. However, the PAT was missed. After the defense forced a punt, Sabrio moved the team downfield with short passes. From the 13, Dennis hit Ezzell in the flat for the touchdown with 0:53 on the clock. Bourgeois decided to go for two and the victory. Ezell swept left end and dove for the goal but was short by inches. Already established as the star of the team, Chris now had accounted for 30 points in just two games.

Football preparation began with spring practice, which actually started in the winter. An article in the February 14, 1969, Aloysian stated: “75 St. Aloysius grid hopefuls travel daily to Cor Jesu to take part in spring football workouts for next year’s Brother Martin Crusader squad. Headed by the Kingsmen’s Andy Bourgeois, the Brother Martin football coaching staff will include Bob Conlin, Dan Conlin, and Ernie Knobloch from Cor Jesu; and Rod Krentel and V.J. Gianelloni from St. Aloysius. Coaches Dan Conlin and Gianelloni will tentatively lead the junior varsity squad, while Coaches Krentel and Knobloch are expected to take control of the 8th grade team.”

By Brother Neal Golden, S.C. ’57 CJ

As the last school year for both St. Aloysius and Cor Jesu High Schools entered the second semester, the question most often asked was: Who will be the head coaches of the athletic teams at Brother Martin High BrotherSchool?Mark

Bob Conlin can’t contain his enthusiasm while Andy Bourgeois to Bob’s right and Chubby Marks to his left are more subdued.

After a scoreless tie with the host school in the Chalmette Jamboree, the Crusaders, wearing the Cor Jesu football uniforms with a large M on each side of the helmets, began their inaugural season with a 28-0 victory over Kennedy at Tad Gormley Stadium. Junior HB Chris Ezzell scored three times on a 91-yard punt return, an 11-yard sweep, and a 43-yard pass from QB Dennis Sabrio, who completed five passes for 79 yards. Sabrio scored on one-yard plunge, while Steve Hooks booted four extra points.

Thornton, S.C., the principal of the new school, split the baby down the middle a la King Solomon. He chose two head men from St. Aloysius and two from Cor Jesu: Andy Russo and Jack Schommer from Aloysius as head basketball and track coaches respectively while Andy Bourgeois (SA ‘56) and Chubby Marks (SA ‘54) from Cor Jesu would lead football and baseball. Bourgeois had clinched the gridiron top spot when he led the Kingsmen to a 14-13 upset of Aloysius during the 1968 season.

The Saders bounced back the next week with a 21-14 victory over the Shaw Eagles at Behrman Stadium. The highlight of the game was Ezzell returning the opening kickoff 100 yards.

After the August practices, in which the players participated as one squad, Coach Bourgeois, one of the Chinese Bandits’ defensive specialists on LSU’s 1958 national champions, assessed his team’s capabilities. He ranked the offensive backfield as the strongest unit while the offensive line was “a possible weak spot.” He added, “The defensive line is bolstered by strong talent at either end, but the defensive secondary can use strengthening.”

Holy Cross became the third top-ten team to face the Crusaders. The Tigers scored early to take a 7-0 lead. Martin marched twice inside the HC 20 only to fail. Near the end of the half, the Saders reached the 17, but an interception killed the threat. A third quarter drive likewise ended on the 17 after a bad pitchout. The Tigers finally put the game away with two fourth quarter touchdowns to win 21-0.

Brother Martin celebrated the school’s first homecoming with a 17-0 win against the punchless Redemptorist Rams. The field was sloppy, and so was the game. The Crusaders scored first on Hooks’s 20-yard field goal with 3:00 remaining in the first period. In the second quarter, Bobby Triemer scampered 50 yards to the Ram 15 to set up the second score. It came on a Sabrio-toHooks completion on third and goal from the seven. It wasn’t until the final quarter that Martin scored again. They marched 64 yards in 11 plays. The touchdown came on another Sabrio aerial, this one to HB David Clay from the nine.

The season ended with another Top 10 foe, De La Salle. The Cavalier defense held the Crusaders to minus yards rushing and a measly four yards of total offense in their 24-0 victory.
