BROTHER MARTIN SCHOOL PRAYER
Loving and forgiving God, We thank you for the charism of André Coindre, the selfless service of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, and the sanctuary that is Brother Martin High School.
Please continue to bless us with leaders, teachers, and students of wisdom and compassion who love us, form us, challenge us, and inspire us.
Enlighten our minds, sanctify our hearts, strengthen our wills, and grace us with courage and trust to meet the needs of our changing world,
We ask all of this through your son Jesus Christ. Amen.

PHILOSOPHY
The 155-year educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart is grounded in a holistic approach to education. We believe that young persons learn from their total experience of the school setting.
The most important aspect of any Catholic education is the development of Christian values and the transmission of the Catholic heritage. Our efforts to have religion spread through the school include campus ministry programs, modeling of religious values, service with others, religious activities, and symbols in the school.
We advocate an orderly and disciplined environment that is respectful, consistent, fair, and based on a relationship of mutual trust and cooperation.
To promote an environment characterized by Christian concern and friendly discipline, we give our personal attention to developing open and genuine relationships with our students and parents through opportunities outside of class time and in less formal settings.
We view academic excellence as the development of our students to the maximum of their potential. We establish a demanding curriculum, provide interesting lessons and continually adapt our curriculum to help our students become the persons God created them to be.

HISTORY
Brother Martin is a private Catholic school offering a college preparatory curriculum for boys in grades 8 through 12. The school has a lay and religious faculty, which is under the direction of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, an international religious order founded in 1821 by Father André Coindre in Lyons, France.
In September of 1969, celebrating the 100th year of educational commitment to the youth of the New Orleans area, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart consolidated St. Aloysius (1869-1969) and Cor Jesu (1954-1969) high schools under the title of Brother Martin High School.
In selecting the name, the Brothers honored one of their own. His contributions to the Brothers and to education are inscribed on the plaque in the lobby of the school: Brother Martin Hernandez, S.C., a Brother of the Sacred Heart whose lifetime of dedicated service to the youth of New Orleans is perpetuated by this building.

HOPES FOR OUR GRADUATES
"During my five years…I also began to understand just what made Brother Martin special. It wasn’t just the curriculum or the athletics. Nor was it just the teachers or the community. It was a combination of all these things and more; the notion of a truly wholistic education that the school loves to brag about. It was the principles ingrained in my brain by popular phrases that I heard enough times; phrases such as: “get involved,” “be a servant leader,” or “get the job done.” This is the sort of approach that proves successful in educating young men for a full lifetime, but it is only possible because of our dedicated focus to the Brothers’ mission."
- Luke Alvendia ‘23 St. Martin’s Episcopal School, Louisiana State University
HOLISTIC EDUCATION
RELIGIOUS VALUES
We care for our students. Through our love, our challenging them, we show them God’s love. We help our young men journey through a faith-filled and meaningful life, all under the loving care of our gracious and forgiving God. We provide a sanctuary for all students.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
We challenge our students. Our varied academic programs encourage students to develop their God-given intellect, to nurture their curiosity, and to give them confidence in their future professional plans. Academic Excellence is different for each student. Our goal is for each young man to reach his academic potential.
PERSONAL ATTENTION
We know our students. We know their families. We strive to know and value each student’s sacred story, recognizing that the complete experience of a young person exists in all aspects of his life - his family, his faith, his academics, and his own personal interests. Our students are more than grades and GPAs. They are young men of varied talents and interests, and we strive to know and support these.
FRIENDLY DISCIPLINE
We respect our students. We trust them to do “the right thing” and “get in their way” when they don’t, not to punish but to correct. We want every act to be a “learning moment,” even their flawed moments. We want them to respect themselves and hold themselves accountable for living a moral life.

WHAT MAKES BROTHER MARTIN UNIQUE
UNSTRUCTURED CLASS PERIOD
The unstructured class period is instructional time designed to provide the student opportunities to do independent study, including reference work, and to use the library, Formation Center and resource centers. Also, the student can arrange conferences with teachers, guidance counselors and/or campus ministers. While always under adult supervision, the student can develop a sense of self-responsibility, self-discipline, efficient use of his unstructured time, and serious study habits. All students have an unstructured class period every day.
REGULAR SCHEDULE
STUDENT DEVICE TYPES
THE FORMATION CENTER
The Formation Center is designated to provide tutoring to students who need academic assistance before school, during their unstructured periods and/or after school. Students come to the center voluntarily or as required by teachers, counselors or the Formation Director. The Formation Center is also a place where students remediate missed or incomplete homework assignments in order to better prepare them for their classes. Teachers and National Honor Society members are available to provide any necessary assistance in building skills and strategies to foster students’ academic success.

Throughout my years at Brother Martin High School, I have been surrounded by a community of teachers and peers who have pushed me to earn achievements beyond my greatest expectations. I would never have dreamed that I could score a perfect 36 on the ACT or become a National Merit Semifinalist without the environment of greatness that is fostered here on Elysian Fields."
