2018 Gr aduation Brother Martin High School held its 49th commencement exercises on May 25, 2018, at the UNO Lakefront Arena. It was also the 149th commencement exercises conducted under the auspices of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans. President John J. Devlin III and Principal Ryan J. Gallagher ‘00 conferred diplomas.

In addition, special academic awards were presented to graduates for excellence in specific courses, and several graduates were recognized for their service to Brother Martin by Mr. Devlin, Mr. Gallagher, and Executive Vice President Gregory M. Rando ‘77.

The valedictorian of the class was Joseph J. Aguda III, and the salutatorian was Benjamin A. Chanes.

#GiveBrotherMartin With the help of over 400 donors, our Brother Martin community of current and past parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, students, friends and donors raised over $65,506 in just 24 hours!

The funds raised for our first #GiveBrotherMartin day went to the Brother Martin Fund. Why the Brother Martin Fund?

The Brother Martin Fund allows our school to facilitate reasonable tuition for all families, attract and retain quality faculty, continue to initiate advancements in technology, accommodate a low studentteacher ratio, maintain a clean and orderly environment and provide an expanded curriculum that offers electives consistent with many college majors.

Throughout the #GiveBrotherMartin campaign, there was alumni and donor representation across the map with donations from Oregon, California, Hawaii, Colorado, Texas, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Our class leader board was neck-and-neck the whole campaign, but the Class of 1997 came out with the most donors and most funds raised for an alumni class. The Classes of 2008 and 2002 placed second and third respectively. The Classes of 1984 and 1990 placed second and third respectively for the most funds raised.

Advancement Office Introduction The Brother Martin Advancement Office welcomed three new team members this year. Chuck Stall ’02 and Chris Alley ’08 serve as Alumni Officers and Stephanie Hoerner serves as Gifts Officer and Advancement Assistant. Chuck leads our Crusader Sports Programming Network (CSPN) and social media. Chris has taken the lead on events. Stephanie assists in various administrative needs.

Milton Dureau ’69 CJ Named Alumnus of the Year Milton M. Dureau, Jr. ’69 CJ has been selected as the 2019 Sen. Allen J. Ellender Award recipient as Alumnus of the Year. Milton was selected by the Brother Martin Board of Directors and will receive the award at a ceremony in March.

Milton has been married to Christine Grilletta Dureau for 44 years and have four children: Stephanie, Matthew ’99, Zachary ’04 and Emily and three grandchildren: Camille, Chloe and Luke.

At Brother Martin High School, he has served on the Cor Jesu Class of 1969 Reunion Committee, the Celebration of the Crest—Auction, serving as chair couple 1997 with Christine, the Parents Club Board of Directors, the Trey Culotta Wrestling Tournament Committee, the Alumni Board of Directors, the President’s Dinner Committee and the Phase III Campaign Committee. He and Christine are members of the Society of 1869.

Commander of Scientific Services in 2009 where he assisted in the design and helped to oversee construction of a new 42,000 sq. ft. forensic laboratory. In 2011, he retired after 38+ years.

Christine and Milton Dureau ’69 CJ at the Branton Chapel Dedication After Cor Jesu, Milton graduated from Tulane University with a B. S. in Chemistry in 1973 where he served as Film Program Committee Chair for the University Programming Board. He began his employment with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office as a Forensic Drug Chemist in August, 1973, he was promoted to Crime Laboratory Director in 1988, he assisted in the establishment of a DNA Laboratory in 2000. He was then promoted to

Milton is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Louisiana Association of Forensic Scientists, in which he served as Vice-President and President, the Southern Association of Forensic Scientists, the Louisiana Board of Crime Laboratory Directors and Administrators and the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors.

Milton serves as a basketball referee for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. He was recognized by the Jefferson Parish Chamber of Commerce for Outstanding Service in 1994 Sisters of St. Joseph of Medialle (now Congregation of St. Joseph). Milton was the recipient of the Archdiocese of New Orleans St. Louis Medallion from St. Rita Parish in 2003 and serves on the Congregation of St. Joseph - People Program Board of Directors.

Brother Mark Hilton Elected Superior General At the General Chapter meeting of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Rome, Bro. Mark Hilton, the Provincial of the United States Province, was elected the Brothers’ new Superior General. The Superior General is the Bro. Mark Hilton, S.C. canonical leader of all of the Brothers in the Institute worldwide and is selected by an international slate of delegates every six years. Bro. Mark’s new residence will be at the General House in Rome where he will work with an international council of assistants providing pastoral animation for the over 1,000 Brothers stationed in 32 countries.

Upon election, Bro. Mark took office immediately.

The 1st Councilor of the local provincial council, Bro. Ronald Hingle ’78, will serve as interim Provincial until a special Province Chapter of Elections for the United States can be scheduled.

Three Scholarships Endowed The Sidney Joseph Reso Scholarship was established in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation (SACF) by his daughters Robyn and Reneé in honor of their father Sidney Joseph Reso ‘52. Mr. Reso was deeply committed to the transformational opportunities that education affords and dedicated himself to helping others fund their education.

The Patrick M. McCarthy Scholarship has been established in the SACF by his brother Tim McCarthy ‘65 SA. The Class of 1984 Scholarship has been endowed in the foundation, also.

Homecoming Members of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association and guests joined together in true Crusader spirit for the 2018 Homecoming Tailgate and Game vs. the Jesuit in early November. Prior to the game an alumni tailgate celebration was in full swing. Student Ambassadors, under the direction of Alex Becnel ’08 and Michael Cappo ’00, served the guests refreshments and food provided by our Culinary Crusaders as Pat Barbaro ’85 provided the music.

The Crusader Cheerleaders, NJROTC Armed Drill Team, Drumline and Band entertained guests with special performances. Stephen Lewis ’03 announced the members of the 2018 Homecoming Court with their student escorts. Then, alumni football players from the 1983 and 2008 District Champions were honored along with the 1993 and 1998 Cross Country State Championship teams and the 1973 and 1979 teams were recognized as they celebrated championship anniversaries. The captains of the 1968 St. Aloysius & Cor Jesu teams, Mike Serio ’69 CJ, Oswald Laporte ’69 CJ, Russ Popara ’69 CJ, and Keith Steger ’69 SA served as honorary captains for their 50-year anniversary.

During halftime, Miss Jordyn Prattini was named the 2018 Homecoming Queen and Alumni Board President Dr. Leni Sumich ’90 presented her crown. Campus News Bowling State Champs In bowling, the Crusaders finished the 2017-2018 season with an undefeated record of 14-0 and claiming the District, Regional, and State Championship titles! What an outstanding season for our Crusader bowling team. Individually, Cody Schaffer ’19 was named the top average bowler in the state of Louisiana.

Cross-Country Wins District, Metro & Regionals; State Runner-Up; Appleton ’19 Individual State Champion The Brother Martin Cross Country finished as Runner-Up in the state championship meet with 70 points behind Catholic High’s 47 points.

Battling through arguably the worst and toughest course conditions in state history. Hunter Appleton ’19 led the charge as the individual state champion.

Cade Litolff ’19 (11th place), Mason Appleton ’22 (15th place), Michael st th Champagne ’19 (21 place) and Landon Sequeira ’22 (26 place) scored for the team. Overall for this season, Brother Martin Cross Country are District Champions, Metro Champions and Regional Champions.

Football The Crusader Football Team finished the season 8-5 advancing to the quarterfinals of the LHSAA State playoffs.

The winning record represents the perseverance and character of the players and coaching staff who exhibited all that it means to be a Crusader.

Injuries, personal matters on and off the field and stout competition posed formidable challenges which were met up to the final whistle. The team motto of “Team, Tough, Compete” was personified with class and integrity throughout the season. Job well done!

Campus News Campus Brother Martin Answers the Call to Leadership The Brother Martin community gathered to celebrate the final Liturgy of the 2017-2018 school year with Fr. Paul Hart ’70, Brother Martin Chaplain, as the Celebrant. The entire Brother Martin community was called to leadership for our next school year.

Summer Camp Campus was filled with smiling faces and excited campers this past summer. During the first week of summer, Brother Martin kicked off Crusader Camp, Baseball Camp and Lacrosse Camp. Crusader Camp activities concentrated on soccer, basketball and intramurals.

Class of 2018 PROM The Class of 2018 joined together for Senior Prom at Messina’s at the Terminal at the Lakefront Airport.

The room was filled with crimson and gold decor and the dance floor was crowded with our Crusaders and their dates.

GRADUATION MASS The Class of 2018, friends, family and Brother Martin faculty came together for the annual Graduation Mass at St. Joseph’s Church on Sunday, May 20th.

Brother Martin Chaplain, Fr. Paul Hart ’70 was the Celebrant and Executive Vice President Greg Rando ’77 provided a reflection in which he challenged the seniors to use their various gifts and services to live up to their potential as graduates of Brother Martin High School. Following Mr. Rando’s reflection, a commissioning service for the Class of 2018, was led by Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00, with the seniors renewing vows of continuing to live out the mission of Brother Martin as they move on to the next phase of their lives. In conclusion, each senior received a small Brothers of the Sacred Heart escutcheon – a coat of arms – identifying the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and a special Brother Martin rosary.

Crusader Miracle Weekend Brother Martin hosted their annual Crusaders’ Miracle Weekend to benefit the Miracle League of Greater New Orleans. Guests of Brother Martin and the Miracle League ‘hit it out the ballpark’ with a fun-filled day of activities for participants. The event also included a baseball clinic for players from the Miracle League and a split-squad game on E.A. Farley Field featuring Brother Martin’s baseball teams, football teams, cheerleaders, students, NJROTC color guard, and all-stars from the Miracle League. These games were designed to give disabled youth an opportunity to compete alongside high school players and learn different aspects of the game. This year’s event also featured several auction items and games of chance with all proceeds going to support this great cause. Thank you to everyone who helped to organize this annual fundraiser for the Miracle League of Greater New Orleans, and the Crusaders will see you all at next year’s event!

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL On Friday, April 27, the Class of 2018 arrived at Brother Martin for their last school day as a student. The day started with breakfast in the Tom and Gayle Benson Mall, followed by Mass with Fr. Paul Hart ’70 as the celebrant in the James B. Branton Chapel.

Ben Chaplain ‘18, and Lou Chaplain ‘82 Keynote speaker, David Gallo ’77 addressed the class and said, “Don’t stay on the sidelines, get out there and make a difference.” The seniors were then given the opportunity to take part in panel discussions with several alumni. Tommy Smith ‘71 and Barry Hebert ‘74, Tim Bennett ‘03, Todd Mashburn ‘11 and Patrick Pritchett ’78 each gave advice about college life, family life, faith life and careers. Seniors then relaxed and enjoy the beautiful weather with games in the backyard before lunch. In the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace, steaks and mac-n-cheese were served as the seniors were joined by some alumni dads and grandfathers.

Campus News SENIOR APPRECIATION DINNER As the Class of 2018 was busy preparing for their graduation ceremony, they took a break and were treated to a delicious meal at the Senior Appreciation Dinner. Before sitting down to eat, seniors heard from Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00, Dean of Students Michael Lynn ‘04 and College Placement Counselor Kelly Wild about the details for the graduation ceremony. The seniors all came together for their final meal, as the Class of 2018, before starting their new journey. Romaguera Photography was also present to capture a final shot of the group, in the Conlin Gym, before graduation. At the end of the evening, the seniors picked up their graduation packets and their caps and gowns for the big day.

Athletics Daniel Croy ’19 and Drew Gardner ’21 were named to the New Orleans Advocate’s 2018 Boys Star of Stars Team! Croy has been named for his accomplishments this year on the Brother Martin State Champion Wrestling team and Gardner has been named for his success on the Brother Martin State Champion Bowling team this year.

Cheerleading The Cheerleading Team celebrated a very successful year at their annual convocation. Not only did the cheerleaders shout out their Crusader spirit at football and basketball games, but they also shouted out their Crusader spirit nationally as the UCA 4th Place Team in the Large Varsity Coed Division.

Baseball Brandon Bonura ’19, Brady Faust ’19 and Joe Delaney ’20 were named to the Advocate’s 2018 All-District Baseball team! Bonura was recognized for his position as Pitcher and for upholding an 8-1 record. Faust was recognized for his position as Infielder and for maintaining an RBI average of .369. Lastly, Delaney was recognized for his position as Outfielder as well as maintaining an RBI average of .412.

The Athletics Department hosted a convocation in the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace honoring the Crusader baseball program. Coaches spoke on behalf of their teams and highlighted accomplishments throughout the season. The varsity baseball team reached the Division I state quarterfinals.

Golf The Crusaders returned to the state championship after advancing through District and qualifying for Regionals and State. The golf team finished up with a 15-5 record and placed 6th overall in the state championship.

Tennis The tennis completed a historic season as they clinched the district and regional championships with an undefeated record and finished as State runner-up.

Track Track and Field season highlights included Hunter Appleton ’19 repeating as state champion of the 3200-meter at the Indoor State Championships. Hunter was state champion at the State Outdoor Championships placing first in the 3200-meter run and second place in the 1600-meter. The team finished as runner-up in the Region 3-5A meet.

Extr acurriculars Academic Games

Four members of our Academic Games team traveled to Knoxville, TN to participate in the 2018 Academic Games National Tournament.

Kyle Borde ’22, Evan DeCastro ’21, Logan Millet ’22 and Landin Sanborn ’22 represented Brother Martin and the New Orleans Academic Games League in Equations, On-Sets, Propaganda and Presidents competitions.

Band

The Brother Martin Percussion Ensemble and Stage Band performed a wonderful concert for all Crusader families and friends to enjoy.

The concert showcased the incredible talents of our bandsmen and their level of expertise while on stage. During the concert, directors Chris Bailey ’86 and Dominick Caronna ’85 recognized Cameron Balser ’19 for receiving the LMEA District VI Marty Hurley award for Outstanding Percussionist in District VI. Beach Volleyball The Crusader Beach Volleyball club won its 3rd straight league title and 4th overall title in dominant fashion. Brother Martin jumped out to an early lead when Nolan Bourgeois and Josh Levandoske won their division and earned a straight-set win on Court 2, 21-7 and 21-5. As the No. 2 pair, the duo finished the season undefeated with a 7-0 match record. This marks the 16th consecutive straight-set win for the pair. On Court 1, Vinny Giovingo and Nathan Levandoske completed their perfect season winning in two sets 21-5, 21-12 giving the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.

Campus News This marks the pairs 4th division title and 18th consecutive straight-set win. Luke Althage ’19 and Ethan Evans ’19 secured the victory for the Crusaders with their 2nd place finish lifting the Crusaders to their 4th title. The Brother Martin Beach Volleyball team finished 21-3 on the season.

Chorus Filling St. Catherine of Siena Church on May 8th, the Brother Martin Chorus performed their annual spring concert for an audience of Crusader families and friends. The Alumni Chorus performed and year-end awards were presented.

During the year, the Chorus received the sweepstakes award for straight superior ratings in concert and in sight reading at the district music performance assessment. The Chorus also received an overall superior rating in concert at the regional music performance assessment.

Andrew Butler ’18 and Carl Davis ’18 each received superior ratings in all categories and an overall superior rating for their prepared vocal solos at the State Vocal Rally at LSU. Crusaders for Life Brother Martin’s Crusaders for Life club hosted the first annual “In Their Shoes” Kickball Tournament. This year, the tournament benefited Woman’s New Life Center and will benefit a different RespectLife organization each following year.

Dionysians On the evening of Monday, May 14, the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace was filled with current Dionysians, their parents and Dionysian alumni for the annual drama ‘banquet’. The evening began with a fabulous dinner, and soon thereafter ‘the show’ of accomplishments and achievements. Touted as ‘The Joyner Awards’, Moderator David Joyner – together with the help of Moderator Ryan Nocito ‘06 – gave recognition to several members of the Dionysian Troupe as well as to a few parents whose services to the organization have been indispensable.

Key Club Students from St. Michael Special School visited our campus for some fun quality time with our Key Club members.

Students toured the school including our new library. After the tour, our Crusaders teamed up with the St. Michael students for a friendly game of kickball in the backyard.

Lacrosse The Crusader Varsity team finished the 20172018 season with a record of 9-5 and ranked 4th overall in the State.

Earlier this year, the Brother Martin Lacrosse program had their first two athletes sign a National Letter of Intent, Noah Velez ’18 to the University of Montevallo and Jackson Schneider ’18 to Hendrix College. Also for the first time, an award named for the founder of the Brother Martin Lacrosse program, Billy Kirkikis, was presented to the ‘unsung hero’ of the team.

NJRTOC Cadets Experience Fleet Week NJROTC Cadets led by their new Executive Officer, Cadet Lt. William Spedale ’19, got a chance to experience a US Navy ship, the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3). Navy ships docked at the Port of New Orleans joined the city for Tri-centennial celebrations, highlighting the city’s long maritime history.

Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00, Cmdr. Bruce Nolan ’90, and Chief Petty Officer Terry Necaise presided over the NJROTC 51st Annual Change of Command and Awards Ceremony in the Backyard on the campus of Brother Martin High School.

Campus News Rugby The Rugby team, coached under the direction of Gary Giepert ’80, successfully advanced all the way to the Rugby State Finals. The Rugby alumni game and reunion are January 5th, 2019.

NOLA Gold Rugby recognized the Crusader Rugby players and alumni at the final game of their inaugural season. Each of the Crusaders in attendance was introduced before the start of the game and recognized for the team’s great accomplishment in placing as State Runner-up this season.

Sailing Team The Brother Martin Sailing Team set sail off the shores of Lake Pontchartrain in the Spring Series Regatta in mid-March.

Students College Run The Brother Martin College Run is a great opportunity for our students to travel outside the New Orleans area and explore what other universities and cities have to offer. Our Crusaders became familiar with the admissions process and gain valuable experience and insight that will ultimately aid in their college search.

The group visited 11 universities along the way including Villanova, West Point, Virginia Tech, and Georgia to name a few. In addition to the college information sessions and campus tours, the students also got to enjoy the social aspect of each city such as a Mets game at Citi Field, the 9/11 Museum, Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a boat tour on the Hudson River, and some free time in New York City. In Philadelphia, the students enjoyed an authentic Philly cheesesteak sandwich, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and a visit to see ‘Rocky’ at the Museum of Art.

8th Grade Trip

130 rising freshmen embarked upon the annual 8th-Grade Trip. This year they visited San Antonio and Houston, Texas. In San Antonio, the group visited Natural Bridge Caverns, Six Flags – Fiesta, TX, and Schlitterbahn Waterpark.

Evenings were spent at TopGolf, Chama Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse, and the world-famous San Antonio Riverwalk. Before returning home, the students spent a day in Houston, TX learning about NASA at the Johnson Space Center and taking in a Major League Baseball game at Minute Maid Park. The students rooted on the home team Astros to a victory against the Boston Red Sox. National Merit Finalists Joseph Aguda ’18 and Jackson Vicknair ’18 have been honored as National Merit Finalists. This designation qualifies them for scholarships at individual colleges and allows them to compete for scholarships from Aguda ’18 Vicknair ’18 corporate donors. Vicknair also received a National Merit corporate scholarship from BASF Corp., an international chemical company. Aguda was awarded the Louisiana Elks Association Most Valuable Student Award Scholarship for 2018.

Crusaders Awarded as Outstanding Boy Scouts During a spring ceremony, the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the CYO/ Youth and Young Adult Ministry Office recognized the outstanding scouts from various troops in the Southeast Louisiana region. The award ceremony was sponsored by the Catholic Committee on Girl Scouting and Boy Scouting with Archbishop Gregory Aymond ’67 CJ as the Mass celebrant. Representing Troop 230 with St. Catherine of Siena, two of our Crusaders, Jackson Long ’20 and Joshua Mendoza ’20 were honored with the Boy Scout: Pope Pius XII award.

Class of 2019 Junior Prom The Class of 2019 gathered to celebrate their Junior Prom in the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace. Crusaders and their guests enjoyed music from DJ Barry “Joey” Brue ’19 and danced the night away.

Dante Cecil ’19 competed as an individual athlete in the LHSAA Men’s State Meet for Gymnastics. Dante placed 2nd in still rings, 2nd in Vault, 3rd in Pommel Horse, 3rd in Parallel Bars and an amazing 3rd place all around. Any position of 3rd or higher in the competition is considered to be All-State.

Connor Damaré ’19 has been selected to be among less than 1,000 attendees at West Point’s prestigious Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) in June.

President’s Dinner The Brother Martin President’s Dinner had a new venue in 2018. The 12th annual dinner took place at The Ritz-Carlton on Canal St. and a record crowd of 135 attended. The evening began with cocktails featuring passed hors d’oeuvres and live music.

Once in the dining room, President’s Dinner committee chairman P. Lindsey Williams ’83 toasted Brother Martin President John Devlin and thanked him for his service as president since 2001.

This is John’s final year as president as he will serve in a new role in the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial’s Office beginning next fall.

Mr. Devlin thanked the Gootee Family, represented by Elaine and Pat Gootee ’65 SA, Kathy and Ken Gootee ’70, Ben Gootee ’01 and Sara and Ryan Gootee for their sponsorship to establish the dinner. Later, he introduced the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in attendance, Bro. Mark Hilton, Provincial of the United States Province, Bro. Ronald Hingle ’78, Brother Ivy LeBlanc and Bro. Francis David.

Finally, Mr. Devlin welcomed Greg Rando ’77 as the next President of Brother Martin High School.

Plus 50 Mass and Reunion This past August, alumni and guests gathered for the annual Plus 50 Mass and Reunion at Brother Martin High School. This special evening includes reunion festivities for alumni of 51 years or more from St. Aloysius or Cor Jesu. This year’s celebration was extra special as the Brother Martin community celebrates 50 years of Brother Martin High School and 150 years of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans.

On April 27th the 2018 Seafood Dinner was held in the Tom and Gayle Benson Mall. This annual event is an opportunity to gather for some great seafood, conversation, prizes, school spirit and much more.

Social Media & Live Streaming Club (Crusader Streaming & Programming Network) CSPN hit the air earlier this fall and has broadcast several Crusader Athletics events. 2018 Golf Tournament On Friday, April 20, the 36th Annual Brother Martin Golf Classic was held at Bayou Oaks South Course at City Park. Over 200 alumni, parents and friends of Brother Martin gathered together for a little friendly competition of golf, great food, camaraderie, door prize raffles and fun, all in support of Brother Martin High School.

In the morning and afternoon, players tackled the par 72 course and showcased their golf skills. Golf Committee Chairman, Ron Brisbi ’67 SA, commented that “with the large turnout of golfers playing in nearly perfect weather, it was a resounding success.”

The afternoon was a sell out, so golfers were eager to get into the morning round to secure their spot to play. The participants even had a chance for their name to be entered for door prizes and raffle prizes. Congratulations to Steve Damore ’77 for winning a Tito’s Golf Bag and to Sean Arrillaga on winning

a Drew Brees autographed football! Other raffle prizes were given out including Brother Martin fan items, hotel stays at Le Meridien New Orleans, Marriott Canal Street, a round Culinary Crusaders of golf at University Club and more.

Delicious food on the course was available to the golfers, which consisted of charbroiled oysters from Mato’s and roast beef po-boys from Bear’s Poboys at Gennaro’s. Prior to the afternoon round, the Class of 1974 Cooking Team prepared a delicious lunch of roasted chicken, potato salad, white beans and rice from Katie’s, salad, and dessert. In addition, an after-golf reception for golfers and their guests included crawfish from Johnny’s Seafood, along with a pasta and sausage dish prepared by our own Culinary Crusaders.

After a great day, golfers and guests enjoyed the new addition of the ’19th Hole Party’ with food and drinks under the oaks and then with a DJ inside the clubhouse.

2018 Fishing Rodeo Brother Martin High School held its annual Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, June 2, 2018. It was a beautiful day for the gathering of alumni, families and friends of Brother Martin as participants competed for various titles in 15 categories.

The Captain’s Party held at Sportsbeat Pub & Cafe in Metairie kicked off the annual Rodeo earlier in the week. Fishermen and guests were able to register while they enjoyed complimentary food, beverages, and fishing tips. Participants were also able to pick up their complementary ditty bags and t-shirts.

Following the Captain’s Party, participants launched their boats in the Louisiana waterways to catch some fish! During the rodeo, Rob Hymel and

Jay Hotard ’82 entertained the crowd with music as Eddie Gonzales ’77 served as the emcee. There were also games for the smallest of fishermen such as a parent-child balloon toss and fish tosses. The Class of ’73 Culinary Squad provided a delicious cuisine of fried fish, hush puppies, sno-balls and more. Team McCrossen, a four-time winner, took home the trophy for the Largest Two Redfish 27” & under. This was a new record for the team for they also had 13 spots on their redfish!

Fishing Club, along with club moderators Glen Fallon and David Jouandot ’03, also attended the rodeo. The Rodeo Committee, the Brother Martin staff along with a team of volunteers ensured a successful event.

Adding to the event, the Brother Martin Cheerleaders walked around selling tickets for a 50/50 raffle of over $500, a “Big Board Raffle,” and a Parade of Prizes consisting of restaurant gift cards, Brother Martin metal art, a Brother Martin pirogue, and much more. The Brother Martin

Golden Crusader Lunch The 2018 Golden Crusader Luncheon was held at The Steak Knife in Lakeview in late May with over 95 Golden Crusaders and special guests in attendance. Golden Crusaders came together in true Crusader spirit to celebrate tradition and to welcome the 2018 Golden Crusaders.

Saints Trip Members of the Brother Martin community traveled to New York to watch the Saints play the Giants. The group arrived on Friday. On Saturday, many of the Crusaders gathered to watch LSU defeat Ole Miss. On “game day” the group joined other New Orleanians and alumni in town for the game for a pre-game celebration. Justin Fleetwood, President of St. Joseph’s (A Brothers of the Sacred Heart school in New Jersey) joined the festivities. The Saints brought home the victory and a good time was had by all.

Marty Gras Benefit Concert to support the Brother Martin Band through the Marty Hurley Endowment Alumni, families, and friends of Brother Martin and Marty Hurley gathered together at Tipitina’sUptown in late May for a great night of music and fun at the 4th Annual ‘Marty Gras’ Benefit Concert in honor of legendary drummer and former Brother Martin Band Director, Marty Hurley. This concert was sponsored by Brother Martin High School and Dave’s Pharmacy – Anna and David Jouandot ’78.

The doors opened to the sound of the Brother Martin and Drumline kicking off the event.

Peabody Reunion About the Marty Hurley Band Endowment: The Marty Hurley Band Endowment honoring Marty Hurley is established in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation to support Brother Martin High School. Musician, composer and master teacher, Marty Hurley served for 37 years in service to the students at Brother Martin as Band Director.

Under Mr. Hurley, the Brother Martin Band was a model of excellence, continually achieving superior ratings at LMEA festivals. The purpose of the endowment is to provide financial support for Brother Martin in an area most important to him during his years at the school – the instrumental music program.

Grads & Dads Day of Reflection Alumni and current dads attended a Day of Reflection in early April. The day’s activities consisted of a guest speaker, prayer, reflection, adoration, rosary, Stations of the Cross with Reconciliation and a Mass in the James B. Branton Chapel led by Fr. David Ducote ’04. Bro. Mark Hilton, S.C., served as leader with the theme of “Become my Disciples”. Cook-Off and Homebrew Challenge The 2018 Crusader Cook-Off stimulated the appetites of hundreds who gathered in the Backyard in early October. Culinary delights like Boudin Bahn Mi, Crawfish Boil Rangoons and Alligator Tacos and more were presented by the 15 cooking teams. Eleven home brew teams competed featuring brews from dark, rich Stouts to crisp Blondes.

Celebrity guest judges voted for the “Top Chef” winners while all attendees casted votes for “People’s Choice” awards. Cash Money Grillionaire wowed guests and judges with their Crawfish Boil Rangoons and took home both the “People’s Choice” and “Top Chef” awards. Gold medal cooking teams were the Spice Boys with

their “Spicy Asian Pork Lettuce Wrap” and ’90’91 with their “3 Piggy Pork”. The “Master Brew” award was given to Roux & Brew’s Pacific Ale. Rob & The Millenials won the “People’s Choice” with their Blonde Chocolate Coffee Stout.

Flag Football Tournament Alumni gathered on Farley Field in early October to participate in our annual flag football tournament. Seven teams participated on the gridiron under perfect weather conditions. All teams were given special “throwback” uniforms representing St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu and Brother Martin in celebration of 50 years of Brother Martin and 150 years of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans. In the finals, Crimson Crush, Bryan Dupont ’90, Ken Brooks ’90, Frank Caracci ’93, David Dussouy ’98, John Lally ’92, Tyler Lally ’18, Billy Davis ’88, Chris Stromboe ’98, Gary Ragusa ’96 and Jason Williams used their experience in winning their third Flag Football Championship.

Brother Martin Night at the Baby Cakes Game The “Shrine on Airline” was the place to be for the annual Brother Martin Night with the New Orleans Baby Cakes sponsored by Pepsi Beverages Company. Pepsi and the Baby Cakes have graciously offered Brother Martin students, faculty and staff a suite along with complimentary tickets for a baseball game the past few years. Various members of the Brother 20  Century II

Martin community participated in the first pitch, team recognition and the National Anthem.

Hunter Appleton ’19 and Landin Sanborn ’22 threw out the first pitch before the start of the game while Alex Christian Lucas ’16 sang the National Anthem. Our Bowling and Tennis Teams were recognized for their victories during the year.

Career Day

Brother Martin hosted its annual Career Day in mid-October. Alumni presenters were welcomed with coffee and donuts in the ‘Crusader Cafe’ located in the newly renovated Tom & Gayle Benson Mall. The group gathered for a photo before heading to their classrooms for their presentations.

Alumni Highlight Judge Kurt Engelhardt ’78 was promoted by the U.S. Senate in May to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. “Kurt is one of the smartest, most legally thoughtful people I know. He will be a real asset to the 5th Circuit,” said Sen. John Kennedy. He obtained his bachelor’s and law degrees from LSU, where he played trombone in the university’s Golden Band from Tiger Land. He also studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles.

Emmett Guderian joined the U.S. Navy shortly after graduating from St. Aloysius. Following boot and RADAR School he was assigned to the USS Independence, CVL-22, the first of nine aircraft carriers of its class constructed after The Battle of Midway.

Ed Scheidt CJ, chief scientist and founder of Tecsec Inc., has branched out into national and international banking security standards. He previously served as chair with leading U.S. banking security standards through end of 2017. Now he’s involved with international global banking security standards with a focus on the security of digital currencies for 40 countries. Ed was recently on the History Channel with an episode on the “Zodiak” killer and his encrypted messages. Ed has recently been balloted by 19 countries to head up an international standard for the security of digital currencies.

Jim Lange SA, was recently inducted into LSU College of Science Hall of Distinction. Jim earned a microbiology BS at LSU in 1969, served in the U.S. Army for three years, then returned to LSU, earning an MS in microbiology. In 1974, he embarked on a 42-year federal career. He received numerous awards in both civilian and military careers, including superior service and ambassador special awards as a civilian and Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Oakleaf Cluster, Air Medal, Vietnam and Operation Iraqi Freedom Service Medals and the Combat Infantry Badge along with the Parachutist Badge.

Tony Bodine recently retired from Chevron U.S.A. Inc. after a career spanning nearly 38 years. He is a Certified Professional Landman as recognized by the American Association of Professional Landmen, spent his entire career in the New Orleans area while working or consulting on land and contract matters in 17 States. At retirement, Tony was the Land Team Lead and Supervisor for Chevron’s Louisiana and Florida onshore properties as well as those located within the Federal shelf waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Tony and his wife Peggy will remain in the New Orleans area, spending time with family as well as continuing with their travels. Tony also plans to continue collaborating with Steve Dorand ’74 and the Urban Gypsies, a New Orleans based band.

John Kemp CJ published “Auseklis Ozols: The Romantic Realism of an Artist and Teacher”. Pelican Publishing Company handled the release in October. This is the most recent of eighteen books about New Orleans and Louisiana artists and New Orleans history. John serves as the New Orleans correspondent for ARTnews magazine, art columnist for Louisiana Life magazine, and he covers the New Orleans art scene for the weekly WYES New Orleans public television show, “Steppin’ Out”.

Armand Richardson CJ published “A Fire In My Lens, An Insider’s Look at New Orleans”. Through the vibrant images captured in his compositions, Armand lures the viewer into the city that lives within his imagination. The book is available through Pelican Publishing.

Michael Saucier is a managing partner for the new Copperstill Marketplace in Covington. Gulf States Real Estate Services, which Michael founded, laid the groundwork in the project development, construction and leasing of the Shops of Copperstill. They also manage the new Rouses, which is the anchor for the shopping center. Copperstill will also be home to Wow Café, H2K Nails, In-N-Out Urgent Care and Heritage Bank, with more spaces to be leased.

Jerry Lyons is a Senior Executive and Director of the FBI’s Explosives Laboratory known as the Terrorist Device Analytical Center (TEDAC) in Huntsville, Alabama.

He leads the FBI Laboratory Division’s efforts in exploiting Improvised Explosive Devices. TEDAC works in partnership with the Department of Defense, and Federal Partners such as the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, and the Department of Homeland Security.

Marc Mouton, Founder/President of the Louisiana non-profit LifeForce Christian Foundation announced the formation of LifeForce Entertainment, LLC. Their first faith-based film project will be: Teen Musical – The Movie (www.teenmusicalthemovie.com) to be filmed locally in the spring of 2019.

Kraig de Lanzac M.D., FASA was recently elected to the office of Assistant Secretary of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). The ASA is a 53,000-member professional organization composed of physician anesthesiologists nationally. His election as an officer in the ASA places him on the twelve-member Administrative Council of the ASA. Previously Kraig served as the Director from Louisiana to the ASA Board of Directors and he is the immediate past president of the Louisiana Society of Anesthesiologists.

Andrew Woodroof, Senior Project Manager at Digital Engineering, has been recognized as one of the ACEC 2018 Young Professional of the Year Award recipients. He has worked on projects such as St. Bernard Parish Drinking Water Infrastructure Improvements, Jefferson Parish Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Program Management, New Orleans Broadmoor Green Infrastructure and Drainage Upgrades, and Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority Levee Lifts. Zack Dureau completed his four-year Pathology residency at Emory University.

For his final year, he was elected by his peers to serve as a Senior Resident. At the ceremony celebrating his residency completion, he was given the faculty award for Excellence in Anatomic Pathology. Zack recently passed his board exams and is now a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology being certified in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. In July, he started a one-year Fellowship in Pediatric Pathology at Emory University/Children’s Hospital of Atlanta. He and his wife, Katherine, are expecting their first child in August.

He received the Rosa Deal School of Arts Outstanding History Student Award, the Rosa Deal School of Arts Phi Alpha Theta Award and the Christian Brothers University Alumni Academic Award for the graduate with the highest GPA. Jackson has also received a teaching assistantship at the University of Mississippi where he will be pursuing his MA in History.

Joshua Tapia graduated in Kinesiology & Human Performance from Briar Cliff University in Iowa where he was a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference championship wrestling team. Josh will be returning to New Orleans and will begin working at Tulane as a Physical Therapy Technician.

Garet Edwards recently completed his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of South Alabama. He is now a post-doctoral psychology fellow and board certified behavior analyst at Village Autism Center in Georgia.

Austin McCann founded Open Thread, a company whose mission is to put a pair of long thick socks on every homeless person in America. Through making designer socks, they hope to accomplish this goal. For every designer sock purchased, Open Thread will donate a pair of long thick socks to homeless shelters in New Orleans, Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Austin began his work with the homeless community in 2005 when he fell in love with serving the less fortunate and fostered a relationship with the New Orleans Mission and other homeless shelters in Los Angeles and San Fransisco. While earning his Master’s in Business from Loyola University New Orleans, he was tasked with starting a business with a cause, and Open Thread was born.

Josh Raley won the Bronze Medal at the USA Shooting Selection in Texas. His 3rd place finish qualified him for a spot on the World Cup Team scheduled to compete in Dubai. Josh hopes to qualify for the Olympic team.

Michael Maldonado and Laura Marcantel won the 2018 Robert Lee Tullis Moot Court Competition at LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center.

Matthew Suarez graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a BS in History and a minor in Japanese. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the US Marine Corps. Matthew received a Critical Language Scholarship from the US Department of State to spend June and July in Japan in a language immersion program. Upon return to the US he will continue his Marine training in Quantico, VA before heading to flight school in Pensacola where he will begin his courses to become a Marine Pilot. He is very grateful to the NJROTC program at Brother Martin for their introduction to and formation of service to our country. Alex Taylor, Norman Vancourt and Jorge Rodriguez traveled to Annapolis, MD for their classmates’ graduation.

Andre Walker III, defensive lineman at Houston Baptist University, carries a 4.0 GPA and is on the Dean’s List. Andre served his first internship this summer at Columbia University in New York. His internship included shadowing doctors and he assisted in the delivery of a baby. Andre plans to pursue neurosurgery and eventually bring his talents back to his hometown.

Daniel St. Etienne won the 2018 Junior Chef Challenge Grand Prize of the New Orleans Home & Garden Show. Daniel’s “Eat Fit Spice Cake” is low in sugar with no white, refined carbohydrates. Swerve is used in place of sugar; Greek yogurt is used in place of butter.

THREE CLASSMATES CANOE THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER Matthew Reineke ’14, Ben Hailey ’14 and Patrick Healy ’14 canoed the entire Mississippi River. They started their journey in the Headwaters of Itasca and paddled all the way to the Gulf. You can see their adventure on Instagram @RiverDudesNOLA. From casually kayaking in Bayou St. John to seriously canoeing the Mighty Mississippi, three alumni decided to have a summer they won’t repeat, but will never forget. Matthew Reineke ‘14, the mastermind of the operation, was inspired by working on the Creole Queen Paddleboat. One of the guides continued to repeat on his tours that you can still canoe down the entire Mississippi. This sparked him to convince his two friends, Ben Hailey ‘14 and Patrick Healy ’14, to jump on board. The first challenge of their trip was their parents, who initially told them no. After much persuasion, watching videos, and a test canoe trip in Arkansas, the boys were given the green light. For the trip, they purchased a 19 ft., two-man canoe and a 14 ft. kayak. They also had waterproof food storage, tents and sleeping bags, and a 20-gallon fresh water container.

They started their journey in Itasca, Minnesota where the Mississippi River is a little wider than the canoe. The River then goes into large lakes that the boys would have to paddle across. Sometimes it would take them a whole day of paddling to get across the lakes. Just outside of Minneapolis, they were stopped by the sheriff department. When they told the officers what they were doing they did not believe them. On the trip, they would post to social media groups dedicated to people kayaking the Mississsippi RIver. Those groups gave them access to places to stay along the journey.

After 8 weeks and 12 hours a day of paddling, the boys popped a bottle of champagne in the Gulf of Mexico.

When asked about the things they missed on this trip, they responded with, “AC, no bugs, and beds without sand.” Matt, Ben, and Patrick agreed it was the best experience they ever had, but they are never doing it again.

Ladies of the Shield Social Brother Martin High School’s Ladies of the Shield social was held on Saturday, April 21 at the Old Metairie home of Danielle and Chad Guidry (Alex ’18). Members of the Administration, Executive Vice President Greg Rando ’77, Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 and Director of Admissions Carlos Bogran III ’99 welcomed our new Crusader Moms and offered their congratulations to the Senior Moms in attendance.

Carlos encouraged new moms to become involved in the school community and he thanked the Senior Moms for trusting Brother Martin in the formation and education of their sons Erin Caruso and Brother Carl Bouchereau and he invited all of the Moms to join the Ladies of the Shield.

Alumni Baseball Trip to Philly Alumni and friends traveled to Philadelphia for the annual Alumni Baseball Trip. Members of the Brother Martin community attended the Crimson and Gold Network Forum: Celebrating Leadership in mid-November in the Tom and Gayle Benson Mall. Scott Walker ’93 emceed as our community leaders shared strategies for success, lessons learned at work and in life and methodology for creating prosperous environments. They shared experiences, challenges and how the Brothers of the Sacred Heart formed them as leaders prepared to meet the challenges of a changing world. CGN Spring Roundtable This spring, members of the Crimson and Gold Network (CGN) assembled for the annual spring social. This networking social is also held for alumni to exchange business information and to catch up on current events and trending business topics. The TD not only brought the Tigers within one point of the Crusaders but gave them a tenth first down to nine for Martin. With no provision for overtime, Coach Brown could kick the PAT to tie and hope his defense could keep the Crusaders from gaining another first down. But the problem with that strategy was that he had no kicker. All season long, the Tigers had gone for two. So that’s what he ordered.

Surratt took the snap, faked to his right, then rolled left and made a beeline for the pylon. But MLB Farnet met him just inside the sideline at the one. An arm tackle might have allowed the runner to reach the ball over the goal. But Pete drove his shoulder into Surrat and, with the aid of several teammates who arrived a split second later, drove him sideways out of bounds to preserve the lead.

Coach Otis Washington, who would lead St. Aug to three state championships from 1975-79, said his team was “keyed too high” and “played lousy.” But he added, “You can’t take a thing away from this Brother Martin team. They took advantage of every mistake, like a good team should.”

Coach Conlin spoke like a man who had the weight of the world lifted off his shoulders. “We didn’t do anything different from the first time we met. There’s no sense in changing when you’ve come this far on a successful season. It’s just a question of a team with everyone concerned doing their job.”

After 47 years, which have seen five trips to the state semifinals plus one to the finals, Brother Martin is still waiting for its second state football title.
