Reflection on God’s love: by Mr. Donnie Midkiff, Campus Minister The Gospel reading from Matthew, Chapter 22 (1-14) shows Jesus, once again, speaking to the chief priest and elders by using parables. Jesus spoke in parables to convey deep messages on multiple levels. In the parable, Jesus likens heaven to a large joyous feast that all are invited to attend. The King in the parable is God, and his servants are the prophets that preceded Jesus's coming to earth. As fallen men and women, we often do not accept Jesus’ initial invitation to eternal happiness. We sometimes choose to indulge temporary urges or simply ignore his invitation, rather than experience the everlasting joy that Jesus offers. Nevertheless, Jesus persists, continuing his pursuit of us. His love for us knows no bounds, and he will invite all, saints and sinners alike, to partake in his great feast. Jesus’ love for us transcends our ability to comprehend its depth. We see at the end of the parable, that the King's servants notice a guest not “appropriately dressed”. This is meant to convey that we are not to be lukewarm in our desire to love the Lord. We are called to love the Lord as he loves us. We can not say with one breath that we desire eternal life with our Lord and with the next deny him or refuse to live our lives in a way that pleases the Lord. All that Jesus desires is that we freely return His love. It doesn’t matter how many times we turn our backs in sin. As long as we truly repent, are sincere in our desire for forgiveness, and long to love the Lord with all our heart, we all will be saved.
