Beverly Waithour Interview by Lilian Uzokwe Beverly Walthour is a Business and Social Media Strategist who works exclusively with women to develop business ideas and put them into action.

As a businesswoman herself, Walthour has tons of experience in being her own boss. In an interview with Bronze Magazine, Walthour describes her own journey as well as what it takes to create your own business and make it successful.

What does it mean to be a Business & Social Media Strategist?

Being a Business and Social Media Strategist means helping my clients to strategically maneuver through this entrepreneurial journey.

I help them do this by providing them with the tips, strategies, resources, and support needed to help them gain clarity, visibility and clients in their online business. Having a strategy, which includes ensuring you have a firm foundation in your business, enables you to have the clarity you need for a successful business.

What was the moment like when you decided to into business for yourself?

I started my 1st business back in 2007. When I decided to do it then, I was completely UNPREPARED to be an entrepreneur. Back then I had an in-home tutoring company. Although I had the skill set (at that point I had been a math teacher for 7 years), I did not have the business skills I needed. I had no clue how to run a business and I did not have the mindset needed to be successful. I see this with a lot of the women I work with. They are incredible with what they do, but they don’t know the ins and outs of running a business. When you become an entrepreneur, you must shift from an employee mindset to an entrepreneur mindset. Unfortunately for me, I learned everything as I was doing it. Although I was able to get clients, I was not able to do so consistently. Fear and doubt started to creep in, and two years after starting my tutoring business, I closed it and returned to the classroom. Fast forward 10 years, and I have successfully started 3 more businesses since then. Now as a Business Strategist, I use what I’ve learned to help other women avoid the mistakes I made when I first started out in 2007.

You have past experience as an educator, what is the main difference between that and businesswoman?

The main difference between being an educator and a businesswoman is my mindset. For me, owning my own business means freedom. As an educator, I did not have that freedom. I had to be to work by a certain time, teach a certain curriculum, made a certain salary, attend meeting after meeting, etc.

As an entrepreneur, I get to control all those things now. One of the biggest things is that I can have a successful business being my authentic self.

Can you explain the ‘mindset’ of a business owner?

The mindset of a business owner should be one of growth. You should always look at ways of growing your brand and your business. You have to shift from thinking like an employee to that of an entrepreneur. That means you are responsible for every aspect of your business and making sure you have systems in place designed to help you be profitable.

You should also ensure that you are not spending time on administrative tasks that keep you from income producing activities. Those administrative tasks can certainly be handled by someone else so that you can remain focused on what you need to do to grow your business. Before you hire someone to handle certain aspects of your business, please ensure you are knowledgeable about those things. If not, you are setting yourself up to be potentially being taken advantage of.

What’s one quality that any business owner must have?

One quality that any business owner must have to be successful is perseverance. Being able to keep going when things do not go as plan is key. You must not only roll with the punches, but also be able to adjust when needed. The start-up phase in your business can be some of the most difficult times, so you have to make sure you are mentally prepared to handle the ups and downs.

What is a typical workday like?

Although most of my days vary, there are certainly elements to each one. I start my day by doing mindset work. This can include me goal setting, journal writing, reading, meditating/praying, exercising, doing EFT (also called tapping), etc.

This allows me to set the tone and clarity for the day. I will then check my email and social media pages so that I can respond to questions or comments. I will then spend the next few hours doing any of the following: working 1:1 with clients, creating content for my email list and/ or social media pages, touching base with my team (publicist, virtual assistant, and intern), etc.

Since my clients also work a full-time job, later the evening, you will find me doing webinars or live streaming!

What’s one step to successfully owning a business that most people overlook?

The one step to successfully owning a business that most people overlook is having a clear plan.

So many people start a business without a plan.

What’s one easy tip for people who want to improve their social media reputation?

One easy tip for people who want to improve their social media reputation is to ensure their profiles represent what they want people to associate with their brand and business. Please know that people will look at not only your business pages, but your personal pages as well.

So if there is anything on it that may lead people to question doing business with you, then you may want to consider getting rid of it.

What’s the most important tool for someone who is self-employed?

Although it does not have to be an official business plan (unless you are seeking funding), but putting your plan on paper is a great way to ensure you’ve thought about some key aspects to your business. Things to include are: annual goals, products and/or services you plan on launching that year, marketing and promotion, budget, etc.

The most important tool for someone who is selfemployed is anything that will help you with time management. Whether that tool is electronic or paper, you need something to help you keep track of your day. There is nothing worse than double booking or overcommitting and it having a negative effect on how your customers view your business and brand. Of course, you are human and mistakes will happen, but you want to have systems in place to cut down on as many of those mistakes as possible.

How did the collaboration on Tying the Knot Between Ministry and the Marketplace come about?

The collaboration I did on Tying the Knot Between Ministry and the Marketplace came about via a Facebook post. The project had already started, but a couple of the women who had committed to the project had to back out. I happen to be scrolling in a Facebook group and saw the post. I prayed about it and then messaged the publisher.

Everything else just fell into place. I’ve always said I will write a book of my own, and I felt this process allowed me to get a taste of what it will be like.

The 11 other women were incredible to work with, and I truly believe that GOD had His hand in the entire process. I certainly have plans to take part in another collaboration before penning my own book.

How do you plan for your business’ future? What are some goals you have now?

I have 1, 3, and 5 year plans for my business that I review every quarter to see whether I’m on track to reaching the goals I have set. Not only do I plan annual goals, but I break those down by the month, week, and day so that I have something to work toward every day. This is a great way to ensure I’m being productive vs. just being busy each day. For me, working on things that move me closer to my goals means I’m being productive. If the tasks are not moving me toward the goal, then it’s just me being busy.

I’m working on quite a few goals for my business.

As a Business Strategist, I work with women 1:1 to help them achieve their business goals much faster. Within the next few months, I will also start doing group programs so that I’m able to reach more women at a time. My experience as an educator and trainer has given me the skills needed to work effectively with groups of people. Since my book just came out, I’m also spending the next few months promoting it via radio, blog, and magazine interviews. I’m also doing a few book signings as well. I’m also working on creating workshops for teachers who are looking to start an online business.

It’s Summer…Be Cool! Go Raw!

5 No-Cook Ideas to Cool Your Body Down and Heat Your Taste Buds Up

G

rowing up with a Jamaican mother in Brooklyn, NY, I watched her make sure there was a cooked meal on the table every day. Many times she’d be up at 5 AM preparing dinner before work. Besides being able to cook her behind off, she was committed to providing for her family. As committed as she was though, I remember hot summer days when she did not want to stand over the stove. As a child I could only sympathize, but today I can offer her an alternative: GO RAW MA!

What Does That Mean?

Simply stated, eating raw means eating plantbased foods in their natural state. This includes unprocessed fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains and juices. (To be clear, unprocessed means it’s in the produce or bulk foods aisle and not able to sit on your pantry shelf indefinitely.) There are some raw foods that are “cooked,” but only under 115120 degrees, and typically in a dehydrator.

Why go raw?

Short answer: enzymes. Longer answer: you already know that fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and grains are packed with nutrients our bodies need.

The idea behind eating raw is that the enzymes in the food support the process of your body maximizing the use of nutrients. There are some veggies and seeds that require some heat before eating, but most of them can be eaten raw. There are a few other reasons to go raw, at least parttime. They include weight loss, reducing glucose levels, enhancing your skin and elevating your energy. And for the summer, eating raw keeps you and the kitchen cool.

1.Jamaican Inspired “Rice and Peas” This high-fiber version of rice and peas will aid with digestion while making sure you are deliciously satisfied. It’s one of my favorites!

Ingredients for 4 servings: • 1 head of cauliflower • 3 stalks of green onions (scallions) • 10-15 sprigs of fresh thyme • ½ cup of fresh coconut, shredded • ½ cup of pine nuts • 3 tbsp of cold press extra virgin olive oil • 1 tsp of Himalayan sea salt • 1 clove of garlic • Thumb size of fresh ginger Directions: • Place cauliflower, green onions, thyme, coconut, garlic, and ginger in a food processor and mince until rice-sized.

• Pour into a bowl and mix in the olive oil, pine nuts and salt. Let it sit for at least an hour to maximize the flavor.

• Eat by itself or serve as a side (possibly with the jerk jackfruit.)

2.Jerk Jackfruit Jackfruit is known for regulating blood sugar level and promoting glowing skin, among many other benefits. So, go ahead: eat and be beautiful.

Ingredients for 4 servings: • 4 cups of fresh jackfruit (not from the can), chopped • ½ medium sized red onion, finely chopped • 3 tbsp of fresh thyme, finely chopped • 5 tbsp of Grace Mild Jerk Seasoning • 2 tspn of minced garlic Directions: • Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix with a spoon until the jackfruit is coated.

• Let it sit for at least an hour to maximize the flavor.

• Serve it up and garnish with avocado if you choose.

3.Strawberry-Sage Dressing In case you make a few salads this summer for your family or friends, show love with this heartprotecting savory dressing. This one transforms salads into your new favorite comfort food!

Ingredient for 4 servings: • 8 medium to large strawberries • 1 piece of ginger about the size of a teaspoon • 1 garlic clove • 4 pitted medjool dates • ¼ cup of fresh sage • ¼ of cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil Directions: • Peel the skin from the ginger and place it in the blender.

• Remove the tops of the strawberries before placing in the blender.

• Add all other ingredients to the blender.

•Blend until creamy then pour over your salad and enjoy.

4.Heavenly Island Ice This fiber-rich dessert has tons of calcium, supports weight loss and reduces the risk of heart disease. Imagine that: bliss-filled, guilt-free indulgence.

Ingredients for 4 servings: • 3 cups of pine nuts • 2 cups of young coconut water • 2 cups of young coconut flesh • 1 cup of walnut chunks • 4 pitted medjool dates • 1tsp of vanilla • ½ cup of agave nectar • ¼ cup of shredded coconut (optional)

5.Caribbean Water Instead of juice, cool down with this drink. It’s freshly cut pineapple chunks bottled with water.

Besides being gorgeous, the pineapples will help boost your immune system. Make a batch and store them in your refrigerator to grab and go.

Going raw doesn’t have to be full-time, complicated or boring. These recipes prove that. Plus, just increasing your raw food intake to about fifty-percent of your diet will make a world of difference in how you look and feel. So this summer, when it’s just too hot to stand over the stove, stay cool, stay beautiful and go raw!

Directions: • Freeze the coconut water and flesh until you are ready to make the dessert.

• Blend all ingredients EXCEPT the walnuts and shredded coconut in a high-speed blender until the mixture is thick and creamy.

• Garnish with walnut chunks and shredded coconut, then serve.

When she is not filming for E!’s WAGS (reality show), you can find the multi-talented bronze beauty with Trinidadian roots right at home..... in the kitchen whipping up delicious meals for her family. Not only are the meals delicious, but they are also healthy. Read on to find out more about Sasha’s favorite healthy recipes, including her favorite Trinidadian dish, how she balances motherhood with her career, and a few of her own personal beauty secrets.

Q. How long have you been in the music industry?

A. I have been singing in the shower as long as I was able to take one. When you love something enough, it sticks with you. I’m an artist that uses music as a creative outlet, and I’m working towards growing and becoming great. It’s been that way for over a decade.

Q. How do you balance being a mother, a recording artist, and filming?

A. I jump off the building and figure it out on the way down. You just learn to prioritize. No one gets it right at first, but you just figure it out once you have the will to. For me, it’s family first.

I believe women just know how to master the universe and do everything at the same time.

We are just built to know how to make things work!

Q. What is it like being the wife of a football player?

A. Well, I see my husband as Antonio, the person, not the football player. He’s a pretty normal guy that just happens to play football.

It feels great being married to your best friend and soulmate. Neither of us came into this world with silver spoons in our mouths, so it’s a blessing to be able to live a nice lifestyle with our children and share it with the ones we love.

Q. What is your favorite recipe to make for your family?

A. One of my husband’s favorite is my lamb chops.

Q. What are some healthy recipes you can give to moms that are expecting, or just had a child?

A. I love a good salad. They are filling and healthy. I like to get creative with different proteins, fruits, veggies, nuts, and dressings. I usually stay away from gluten the best I can.

Q. What is your favorite dish from your Trinidadian background?

A. You can’t go wrong with a big pot of Pelau. It is a traditional Trinidadian dish that everyone loves!

Everything goes in one pot so its super easy to clean up.

Q. What are some beauty tips you can give to our readers?

A. 3D micro-bladed eyebrows are great! You won’t need to fill them in if you don’t feel like it, and it can look very natural. Also, wash your hands before you wash your face so you don’t rub germs on your skin, and never go to bed with makeup on. Always wear sunscreen on your face and hands. If your hands look old, they give away your age.

Q. What are some of your personal beauty secrets?

A. I rub coconut oil on my skin before I get out of the shower to keep my skin soft. I also rub my lips with brown sugar and coconut oil when they feel dry.

Q. What is your favorite product to use in your hair to keep your curls defined and hydrated?

A. I love Deva Curl products for my curls. I also use emu oil to help with hair growth and fullness around my hairline.

Q. How often do you straighten your natural hair and when you do, what do you use to keep it healthy?

A. I sometimes wear hair extensions to protect my natural curls from the flat iron styling when I want a straight look. If I need to straighten my natural hair, I use low heat setting, and not do it very often.

Sasha Gates has given many of her secrets that many women can benefit from along with some delicious foods to try. It isn’t always easy balancing a career and home life, but she tackles it on without breaking a sweat.

Lewis (top right, center), hosted an Official Launch and Summer Book Reading Event on May 18th in NYC. The event, of which Bronze Magazine was a proud media sponsor, ran from 6pm to 10pm and allowed individuals to donate brand new books for reading levels ranging from first grade to high school. There was good music, food, drinks, lots of conversation and even some dancing. The event was full of discussion and good vibes as guests arrived to donate their books and meet one another.

The Advanced Minority Community’s mission is to help minority students get a higher level of education. One of the ways in which they do so is by providing scholarships to minority students who graduate from high school. AMC works to inspire prosocial friendships, strong interpersonal skills, and instill a sense of hope in the future. They focus on empowering youth in order to establish productive goals and the ability to follow through on commitments. AMC wants to expand the perspectives of minority youth to show them the possibilities life has to offer.

The Advanced Minority Community works on programs such as: college preparation, job searches, scholarships, credit counseling, self-discovery art program, conflict resolution and legal services to accomplish the goal of an inclusive learning environment.

Easy Summer Entertaining

By Jo Jo Harder In the summertime, living should be easy! With warmer weather approaching, and thoughts turning to summer soirées, I have compiled a list of elegant but easy to whip-up appetizers.

•Spread bruschetta with cream cheese, top with a slice of smoked salmon and sprinkle with chopped chives and a dash of cayenne pepper.

•Slice a large olive in half lengthwise and top with blue cheese and a pecan half.

•Serve peach salsa with blue corn chips.

•Spread plantain chips with guacamole and top with lump crab.

•Fill mini pastry cups or fillo dough shells with chicken, ham, or tuna spreads.

•Spread water cracker or apple slice with liver pate, top with an olive half.

•Serve fresh pear slices with gorgonzola cheese and chopped walnuts.

One of my favorite offerings is a summer-fresh antipasto tray pictured here.

It is easy to prepare, colorful, and conjures up a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Just add Ranch dip and a creamy cheese spread.

The shopping is easy too! When it comes to wine, cheese, nuts, vegetables, olives, crusty bread, and so forth, it usually only requires one stop at your local supermarket. If you do not mind making a second stop for fresh flowers, I suggest shopping at a wine store.

At my favorite neighborhood wine store and specialty market Gourmet Phile in Boca Raton, Chef Melanie Stewart offers expert advice on wine pairings. Not only is this store beautifully appointed, housing a wine cellar with over 250 selections and a chocolate room, they also ship nationally.

Chef Melanie suggested some of the best red wines to serve in warm weather are Beaujolais and Shiraz that can be slightly chilled or sparkling red Beaujolais served cold.

She suggested Sauvignon Blanc, Cava Spanish sparkling wine, and Delirium Tremens Belgian Beer to pair with my antipasto tray. Additionally, lemonade and sparkling waters are great options.

One of Chef Melanie’s delectable creations (pictured here) is goat cheese and fennel pollen drizzled with pistachio cream. Serve with Sauvignon Blanc and water cracker or toasted baguette. Yes please!
