Editor’s note Hello Bronze beauties, it’s been quite a few months since our last issue in April. At that time, it was the early beginnings of COVID19 and we were all under strict quarantine and social distancing guidelines. Since then we’ve suffered far too many losses in life, an increase in positive cases, slow reopening phases, the beginnings of vaccine trials, and increased testing and contact tracing efforts. So much has happened in the months since the corona virus first attacked the immune systems of what is now more than 6 million people in the U.S. I am heartbroken from it all – the pandemic and how it has changed life as we once knew it, the continuous cycle of painful racial injustices and a democracy that is on life support.

Despite my heartbreak, I have somehow still managed to maintain hope and faith that there will be healing and change. So please, let us continue to wear our masks, practice social distancing, fight for what is right and just, and prepare to vote with intention this November; all while holding on to the belief that things will work out eventually for the best.

xoxo, Shawn

FALY RAKOTOHAVANA

Up-and-coming actor Faly Rakotohavana wil be seen in the upcoming Disney+ film called Secret Society of Second Born Royals, which releases on September 25th. The Madagascar native will have the opportunity to work alongside a few movie stars including Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect, Glee), Niles Fitch (This is Us), and Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Andi Mack). While this isn’t Rakotohavana's first Disney project, this is his first time starring in a sci-fi fantasy film. We caught up with the star to learn more about how he became interested in an acting career and what we can look forward to seeing him be a part of this year. Bronze Magazine: Hi Faly! Thank you for being a part of this interview with Bronze Magazine. How has the COVID19 pandemic and quarantine period affected you? Faly Rakotohavana: It started off pretty rough. It took a while for me to adjust to the whole quarantine thing. Especially since everything is now online. It felt weird seeing my whole class over a Zoom conference and doing all of my tests and assignments over the computer. But after a month or two I kind of adjusted to it.

Bronze Magazine: What are some skills you developed during the quarantine that you didn’t know you had before? How have these new skills impacted and/or influenced your career? Faly Rakotohavana: Since quarantine started, I took up skateboarding! I’ve been skating for a couple of months and I’m still not the best, but I am getting better at it. Plus, skateboarding would be a really nice skill to put on my resume. Another skill I have been working on is my driving! I think that will have a huge impact on my career because it will definitely be easier for me to get around once I can drive. Bronze Magazine: Talk to us about living in Madagascar and coming to the United States. When did your love for acting begin? Faly Rakotohavana: I was born in Madagascar and lived there for about six years. My love for film and TV started there. We had this box TV that I would watch all my movies on and I always dreamed of one day being on that TV. Bronze Magazine: Talk to us about the process of making your dreams of an acting career become a reality. Faly Rakotohavana: I didn’t commit to an acting career until I was in 6th grade. I tried acting when I was younger, but I had a stutter that was so bad I couldn’t even get through my first audition! So, I took a break until I started doing musical theatre in 6th grade. It was then that I realized I wanted to be on the big screen. I auditioned for an acting workshop that I did over the summer of 6th grade and from there I signed with my manager and my agent. Bronze Magazine: Not only have you starred in TV shows, but you have also starred in a few films. What would you say is your favorite thing to do? Films or TV shows? Faly Rakotohavana: I think TV shows are a lot more intriguing to me than movies. I feel like movies are more limited than TV shows. Movies have to deliver their message and story in maybe a little more than two hours, but TV shows get to explore new ideas and create a story that lasts up to 10-20 episodes. Bronze Magazine: How was it being a part of Disney’s new upcoming film Secret Society of Second-Born Royals? How was this production different from any other Disney shows you have starred in? Faly Rakotohavana: Being a part of Secret Society of Second Born Royals is such a blessing! It was a great experience and I enjoyed every second of making it. I feel like it's different because it targets a whole new audience. This film goes out to everybody that always comes in second. It delivers the message that everybody is important and unique no matter who they are. Bronze Magazine: You play the role of Matteo.Talk to us about your character. What are some techniques you had to use to get into character?

ATTIC

Faly Rakotohavana: Matteo is a very shy but smart character. He always sees the best in people and just wants to fit in. I am the complete opposite of Matteo, so trying to become this character was a little more difficult than previous roles I have played. I had to isolate myself around friends for a while so I could learn what it was like to be such a shy and awkward person. Bronze Magazine: How was it working with the cast and alongside well-known stars like Skylar Astin? Faly Rakotohavana: Working with such a wonderful cast was so great! They were all so kind and we all had a great time. Skylar was an epic man with awesome energy. He always brought a lot of energy to set and seeing him work was quite inspiring. Bronze Magazine: What are some helpful tips or advice you can share with someone who wants to be an actor just like you? Faly Rakotohavana: My only advice is to be patient and work hard. Working in the entertainment industry takes time and work but if you are patient and work hard, good things will come your way. Bronze Magazine: What upcoming production(s) can we look forward to seeing you in? Faly Rakotohavana: As of right now, I don’t have anything that I am allowed to announce. But I can say that I am really excited for what the future holds for me, and I hope that you will all stick around and see what else I’ve got in store for you guys.
