Hi all, What a fantastic session our second Let’s Talk was. We hope you enjoyed the format this time round; it’s not just about us updating you on where the business is going, we’re really keen to hear from you too. We’ve taken your thoughts on board and the points raised will be discussed at the next ExCo meeting. As I said at Let’s Talk, we have a longer two hour get together in June where we will feedback on the topics you brought up.

We’ve got another jam packed edition of Our Voice this month! There’s been lots going on at BN, and in the Bravo Group as a whole, so we’ve got a special feature covering what has been happening across the group with news from our Ethos brokers, as well as pieces in the press.

There’s only a week to go until BN Live, and as Richard Pitt said, we’d love for you to sign up and tune in for the one hour broadcast to hear our direction for the rest of 2019. Register on page five.

Have you thought about studying to progress your career? The Learning Network team are launching the next round of management apprenticeships and want to hear from you any of you who are interested in taking up an apprenticeship in your relevant field.

Clare mentioned at Let’s Talk about the new family friendly policies HR are putting in place, turn to page seven and eight to find out more, plus how to refer a friend and our new upcoming health and safety policy.

As well as ‘huddling’ for our second Let’s Talk session, we know it’s just as important to get together outside of work, and we had such a brilliant turn out for our first Let’s Socialise event with the Quiz Night. We’ve taken snaps of all the teams and shared the scores on the doors on pages nine and ten.

We’ve steered our partnership with Markerstudy into a new direction with the On the Road campaign. Now all three episodes have ‘aired’, we sat down with our BDMs to find out what it was like in the driver’s seat.

We’ll all be meeting up again in June for our bumper Let’s Talk session and for our next Let’s Socialise event by the Knaresborough riverside. In the meantime, we’ll keep you up to date on any developments and announcements in the next edition of Our Voice, and of course on OSCAR. s you’ll have seen in the comms we sent to you recently, we wanted to give you clear understanding of how the new Bravo Group Structure looks, so that there is no mystery.

As well as the registration opening for BN Live here at Broker Network, it’s been a busy month across the Bravo Group with the launch of Ethos Broking and the Compass Conference. We wanted to give you an update on what has been going on across the rest of the group.

COMPASS CONFERENCE

O

n 7th March, the Compass team hosted their Annual Conference, welcoming over 300 attendees – their highest number to date – and 35 exhibitors, as well as an inspirational talk from keynote speaker Michelle Mone. The conference was rounded off in style with a fabulous gala dinner where 260 guests were thoroughly entertained by comedian Justin Moorhouse.

Managing Director John Lincoln says, “It was the best Compass Conference to date with more Members attending than previous years. We’ve had some fantastic feedback with Members and Insurers telling us it was a great networking opportunity and that deals have been struck.

“In fact, we’re delighted to report that an incredible £1.6m worth of business was written as a direct result of Members speaking to our Insurer Partners at the Conference.”

INTRODUCING W ETHOS BROKING

e unveiled Ethos Broking to the world this month, and it’s been positively received within the marketplace. As you saw in the video of Des’ presentation from the Compass Conference, he also launched Ethos Broking and the Bravo Group to Compass Members.

The new look and name gives Ethos Broking a stronger presence and clarity around its offering in the market, making it clear that the brand is an advisory broking business. As Des and Richard Tuplin said in the press, it's not simply about acquiring brokerages, it's about bringing them into the group and partnering with them.

NEWS FROM OUR ETHOS BROKERS ACQUISITION EXPANSION

Finch has continued its acquisition expansion in the South by purchasing Specialist Insurance Agency Ltd (trading as SIA), based in Southampton.

Managing Director, Vince Gardner, says, “I have known the SIA team since they were first established and tracked their progress with great interest. For SIA to blend their team with ours in Southampton will enable us to create a £15m GWP Southampton office, offering first class advice and service to our SME and Private Clients, with a true depth of broking and claims service.”

CHARITY OF THE YEAR

Also, the team at Finch will be supporting Naomi House & Jacksplace as their chosen charity for 2019. The cause provides expert hospice care to more than 525 life limited and life threatened children, young adults and their families from Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Berkshire, West Sussex, Surrey and the Isle of Wight.

The first company-wide event will take place on 29th March when they host the Finch Group Bake Off and Chairman of the Charity Committee, Paul Chapman, is planning to compete in the 2019 Jurassic coastline challenge in aid of the cause.

WELCOME TO MARTIN!

The team at Lockyers have welcomed Martin Hall as their new Head of Leisure – South. Martin has worked in the insurance industry for over 30 years, starting as an administrator in a small family run broker in Tamworth. After gaining experience in General Broking and Professional Risks, Martin played a key role in setting up PIB and headed up their Leisure division from 2017.

Martin says, “It’s a great team at Lockyers.

Together we can make the most of our knowledge of this sector, delivering the right protection at the right price for clients. I’m looking forward to exciting times in the year ahead.”

CHARITY CHALLENGE

Some of the Lockyers team will be doing their bit for charity when they take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge on 8th June in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance. If you’d like to donate, click here.

IS AN APPRENTICESHIP FOR ME? Apprenticeships aren’t just for teenagers these days; they’re for anyone over the age of 16. You can do an apprenticeship in almost anything, even how to become an astronaut… now, that doesn’t apply to working here at BN, unless you want to open up a brokerage on the moon, but if you want delve deeper into a specific field, there may be an apprenticeship for you.

The Learning Network team can support you in a range of apprenticeships including HR, marketing, finance, to project management, and more! There’s no cost to you and you can progress your career with supported development.

If there’s something you’d like to study, speak to your line manager and let them know, then get in touch with Rachel in the Learning Network, who can help you find the right apprenticeship for you.

CALLING ALL MANAGERS AND TEAM LEADERS Our first cohorts in both our management and insurance practitioner apprenticeships are well on their way to achieving their qualifications, and we’re looking to kick start our next management group. Whether you’re a newbie team leader or have been a manager for a while, but have never had formal training, this apprenticeship is for you.

Tap into industry knowledge as you achieve your Level 3 Leadership and Management qualification from the Institute of Leadership and Management. The apprenticeship comes with full support, a dedicated coach and workshops from experienced trainers, all over 18 months.

The programme has been designed by our new provider Raise the Bar, who are specialists in leadership development and have a unique and exciting approach to apprenticeships, including augmented reality and an app to track your progress.

FAMILY FRIENDLY POLICIES One of the questions raised at the last ‘Live @ Home’ before Christmas was about making our maternity and paternity leave more family friendly, and the HR team have been working hard to make our policies more favourable.

As Clare mentioned at Let's Talk, we're delighted to confirm an enhanced Maternity/Adoption and Shared Parental Leave Policy.

Any mums-to-be will now receive an increased paid maternity leave from the statutory six weeks to 12 weeks full pay to support the first months which is such a valuable time with your new arrival. Plus, while you’re on maternity with your bundle of joy, you’ll accrue any bonus payments and if you decide to take Additional Maternity Leave, we will continue to pay into your pension pot.

We know it’s just as important for fathers to spend time with their little ones, so we’re also now enhancing our Paternity leave to two weeks full pay for any dadsto-be and two paid scan days so you don’t miss out on the exciting developments of your baby.

The enhanced Family Friendly policy will take effect from 1st April 2019 and the full policy outlining Maternity, Paternity, Adoption and Shared Parental Leave is available from HR.

PUT MORE IN YOUR PENSION POT! It can be easy to forget about making sure you’re set up for the future. We wanted to remind you that from 6th April, in line with government legislation around Pensions Auto Enrolment, there will be a statutory increase to the level of employee and employer contributions.

This will affect any of you who currently contribute at the minimum 3% to your pension, which will rise to 5% from 6th April.

This increase will be reflected in your April payment in your wage slip.

The employer contribution has increased from 2% to 3%, and Broker Network already contributes the new minimum of 3%.

JOINING CASCADE We are delighted to have brought onboard Boyd, Lockyers, Knighthood and Thompson & Richardson to Cascade. We have rolled out training to the teams who have all benefited from using the self-service platform. Having access to the Ethos Brokers on Cascade has helped the HR Team support and guide them through any HR issues they may have encountered.

Plans are underway to bring Saffron, MCM, Weald and Finch onto Cascade in the near future.

HEALTH AND SAFETY MADE SIMPLE! Making sure we work in a safe and comfortable environment is one of the top priorities of the Bravo Group ExCo. To ensure we fulfil our responsibility; the HR team have partnered with Lighthouse Risk Services LLP to support the management of Health & Safety across the Group.

We’ll be working with Lighthouse to develop a Health & Safety Policy and we will be appointing H&S Champions from every business to help drive forward the understanding and importance of the policy. The champions will have a brilliant opportunity to receive some formal H&S training and with future development opportunities arising over time, with consideration being made to placing all Champions on the IOSH Managing Safely course – an accredited training programme recognised nationally.

Forget ‘Quiz’ Tarrant, Andy Whiteley was on top form again as he returned as quiz master extraordinaire. He also showed his skills as a barman as he went behind the bar and had his sparkly reversible jacket on for the occasion, so he could change outfit at the drop of his quiz hat.

Our campaign with Markerstudy is well and truly On the Road – Episode One and Two have ‘aired’ to our Members.

With Episode Three now out this week, we caught up with our BDMs who were in the drivers’ seat to get the low down on what it was like to be part of the campaign.

BROMANCE

Derek Bradshaw starred in Episode one with Markerstudy’s Anthony ‘Foz’ Foster to talk all about the driving force behind the partnership.

In Episode Two, James McCarthy and Matt Seago hit it off, forming a bromance and delighting everyone with their take on Bohemian Rhapsody.

Derek says, “It was an absolutely fantastic experience. I wanted to be involved as it gave me the opportunity to meet Foz and the Markerstudy team and get to understand their proposition even better.

James comments, “It was a really enjoyable experience to be part of the campaign and to meet the people involved in our new partnership with Markerstudy. And for my 15 seconds of fame!

“My highlight was discussing our script, the funny ideas we were coming up with and then performing in front of the camera was hilarious. Foz and I were going to include various lines from Pulp Fiction but it didn’t make the final cut!”

“The highlight for me was meeting someone who has the same sense of humour as me in Matt Seago. He was up for a laugh and didn’t take it too seriously.

I think everyone will see the funny side to our video, although, when we decided to swap jackets, Matt did find it a squeeze and needed a hand to get into mine!

“It was a great day, and a great idea!”

Simon Kerry showed his Yorkshire spirit by donning his flat cap as he drove Ruth Robinson in the final episode.

Simon explains “It was a real experience.

I have to admit I was a little nervous, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. I was volunteered by Martin Cleary, being local, or maybe because of my youthful good looks! The best part for me was being able to wear my famous cap!

“One memorable moment was whilst driving, the camera phone kept slowly falling down, and I had to keep readjusting!

“If we do it again, put me down no problem!”

BNU SMASH TARGETS The BNU New Business Team have had a great start to the year, writing nearly 70% more business than this time last year. BNU as a whole has grown by 16% so far this year which is an amazing result!

The Underwriting Support Team also received and processed an amazing 60,000 emails from Members on behalf of BNU last year.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE The team at Property Protector raised an incredible £10,000 for charity Forget Me Notts.

The cause is Operation Orphan’s UK based project and helps vulnerable children across the East Midlands.

Sean Neal, Partner at Property Protector, went to his first trustees meeting with a cheque wrapped in gold paper in hand as a surprise for the charity.

A BIG THANK YOU TO JULIE BNU would like to give a shout out and a big thank you to BDM Julie Branton. The team say: “Julie recently undertook a two day tour to some of her panel - Merenda & Company Limited, Chalkwell Insurance Services, WRS Insurance Brokers and R Pipe Insurance Consultants – accompanied by one of our Trading Underwriters Darren McNaught. The purpose of the visits was to re-introduce these brokers to BNU and discuss what we can do for them.

“The visits were well organised and a definite success as we are already seeing more engagement with all of these brokers. We are looking to do more of these BDM and underwriter visits in the near future, so thanks to Julie for organising it and helping to make a success of the two days out.”

GETTING SETTLED IN SETTLE Congratulations to BNU Managing Director Mike Ellis, and his new wife Claire who tied the knot on 9th March. The newlyweds got married in Settle on their fifth anniversary of being a couple – how romantic! Mike had booked a trip to Paris for him and Claire and she thought he might propose when they were in France, but it was a ruse. He took her for a lovely walk around Bolton Abbey and as they crossed the bridge at the Cavendish Pavilion, he got down on one knee and proposed.

After she said ‘yes’, he pulled out a bottle of champagne and two glasses from his backpack, so they could celebrate. We hope the happy couple enjoyed their honeymoon in Lanzarote.

Sadly, we’re saying farewell to a few members of staff who are moving on to pastures new.

We’re welcoming Group Head of Communications and Events Donna Wallace and BDM Aloma Chandiram back from maternity leave.

As you heard at Let's Talk, over the next few months we'll also sadly be bidding farewell to Tania Hollands and Andy Whiteley. We're sure you'll join us in wishing all of our leavers the very best of luck.
