The Brody Jewish Center, Hillel at the University of Virginia strives to develop relationships, communities, and experiences that empower Jewish students at UVa to take ownership of their Jewish identity. We do this through building relationships, understanding our students’ passions and interests, and tailoring our approach to create compelling and relevant opportunities for each individual student.

Throughout this report, you will read about the many ways we accomplish our mission and about the impact Hillel is having on our students’ lives. And though I could spend pages explaining the strategy behind what we do and how we do it, I want to focus on why we do this work, the reason Hillel exists, and why our staff works so tirelessly and passionately to fulfill our mission.

UVa students are bright and talented, and will go on to become leaders in their professions and communities. Through the work we do, we strive to inspire these students to see Judaism as a compelling model for living and affecting change in the world. Our hope is that each student will make an enduring commitment to Judaism, and that that decision will not only enrich their lives but the world as well.

“Hillel was a community that automatically embraced me. Not only is it an outlet for Jewish-related activities and events, but it’s a place that I can call home and always feel comfortable going to. ETHAN HANDLER 2ND YEAR “Being an out-of-state student and knowing very few people at UVa, I was afraid of how I would find my place on Grounds.

But between High Holiday services and meals, Passover Seders, and Shabbat, Hillel became my place, and my Jewish experience helped shape my time at UVa. It wasn’t just the religious parts of Hillel that make it feel like home though - it was the little things. The staff is welcoming and always makes sure students are doing well. It’s also the best place for latenight studying during finals. And no matter how informal or formal, Hillel always felt like a community where I belonged. “

GABBY LEVET 3RD YEAR “At the Brody Jewish Center I have been able to connect my passions and what I’m studying to my Jewish faith. Through service learning discussions, I have spent time grappling with the endless questions of how to repair the world, tikkun olam.

I spend a majority of my time focused on how to improve the local and global community, especially by addressing environmental challenges. The BJC staff has made endless efforts to find ways to relate my passion for sustainability by learning through the Jewish faith. Combining these two identities has strengthened my understanding of both, and for that I am grateful.”

My eight days in Berlin not only enriched my understanding of the Holocaust and the events in Europe preceding and succeeding the Shoah, but they shifted my understanding of Germany and what it means to develop personal and national identities in the face of a traumatic, tumultuous history.

When I went on Birthright, I wanted to figure out the place Israel had in my life. I had learned all about Israel every year in Hebrew school following the fourth grade, but some reason, it always felt like a faroff foreign land to me.

The ability to walk through a concentration camp as a young, free Jew was particularly meaningful to me.

While all the particulars of the camp were upsetting to hear about and see first-hand, there was a certain sense of pride I felt as I reclaimed a space designed to murder my ancestors. It was also fascinating to see how Berlin memorialized the events of the Holocaust via the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Jewish Museum, and the stumbling stones, among others. The presence of these memorials is intertwined within the fabric of the Berlin cityscape and Berlin culture. It showed me more about my place in history as a Jewish person, and informed my identity for the present day.

When we got to meet with members of the German Parliament Birthright showed us everything Israel has to offer from the Sea of and State Department, we learned about Germany’s unique and Galilee up north to the Dead Sea in the south. I appreciate how delicate relationships with Israel and America, as well as Germany’s much we got to see and how much we learned about each place role globally, and in Europe. For a group of politically charged it helped Israel feel less like a strange land. More important than students, this inside foray into international politics gave me a new the traveling, though, was the people. Yet, Birthright helped me embrace the spirituality (or at least the habits) of Judaism more, especially Shabbat. As someone who never really observed Shabbat, I was taken aback by how everything stops on Friday night in Israel. I realized just how valuable it is to take time to rest. On the trip, we’d been traveling non-stop, yet, on Shabbat, we stopped, rested, and reflected. Back at UVa, I try to take Saturdays out for myself. I consider myself a busy person, but Shabbat has shown me how valuable it is to take a break. I could not be more thankful for everything Birthright provided me. It gave me a better feeling of what Israel is, incredible friends, and a stronger sense of self.

JAKE LICHTENSTEIN 2ND YEAR FROM ROANOKE, VA Before I became involved with Hillel at UVa, I did not feel integrated into the Jewish community in Charlottesville. I had friends who were Jewish and I had attended some Jewish events, but I still felt removed from Jewish life. When I became an engagement intern for Hillel, I developed a stronger and deeper relationship with the Jewish community at UVa, and with my Judaism in general.

This internship provided me the opportunity to reintroduce Judaism into my daily routine, and I constantly looked forward to the time I spent with other Jewish students.

Though the internship with Hillel, I became close with a lot of people who I would not have otherwise met. I worked closely with Jewish professionals to plan and execute programming that reflected my interests, and I was able to incorporate the interests of other UVa students into these programs. The experiences I have had as a result of my internship have really shown me the importance of Jewish life on Grounds. I’m confident that I will stay involved with Hillel for the rest of my college career because I have grown so much from my involvement, and I am excited to further develop my Jewish identity at UVa.

EMILY UMANSKY, 4TH YEAR FROM ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY Joining the Jewish Social Connection board at Hillel as a first year helped me jump into the UVa community and meet other Jewish students. But as a second year, I was looking to pursue my passions. I became active with the Jewish Social Justice Council (JSJC) with Hillel, and through it strengthened my commitment to social justice issues and helped me explore their relationship to Judaism. It helped me realize that a big part of being Jewish included actively working to repair the world, and these values have become an integral part of my identity.

My involvement in JSJC also led me to serve on Hillel’s Jewish Leadership Council during my fourth year. This leadership opportunity made me feel like I was a valued member of the community, and that my ideas and passions could make a mark on UVa. Hillel gave me the chance to work closely with other Jewish student leaders who offered encouragement, inspiration, and invaluable friendship.

I feel very dedicated to the Jewish community and know that it will continue to be an important part of my life after leaving UVa. Hillel has taught me how to support the Jewish community and develop meaningful relationships within it, all while working to uphold the values that we share. My experience with the BJC has shaped my identity and I am so grateful for the opportunities that Hillel has opened up to me.

ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK FELLOWSHIP

ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK: DISCOVER GERMANY

ZAK KROOKS, 4TH YEAR FROM CHAPPAQUA, NY Before arriving in Charlottesville, I had no intention of getting involved in Jewish life at college. But after realizing that the whole world isn’t comprised of as many Jews as the suburbs of New York City, I recognized that the Jewish community and Hillel would become an essential part of my college experience. I quickly became involved and wouldn’t go a week without some sort of Hillel event, whether it was attending Shabbat services and dinner or Bagels on the Lawn.

When you walk in the doors of the Brody Jewish Center, you immediately encounter other students from all over who have similar traditions and backgrounds to yourself. Before Hillel, I never realized that having these things in common made such a big difference in building meaningful relationships.

Through Hillel, I had the opportunity to plan the 2016 Matzoh Ball, an annual event where the Jewish community comes together for a bar night on the Corner. Being trusted with this responsibility allowed me to gain invaluable experience in event planning that I could not get in the classroom.

Though I’m leaving Charlottesville, I know Hillel has had a profound impact on my future. In fact, the great experiences I’ve had attending and helping plan programs to engage Jewish students led me to decide to spend a year abroad, teaching English in Israel. I’m excited for the next chapter of my life, and know that I’ll carry Hillel with me in Israel and beyond.

JOSHUA BLUTFIELD 1ST YEAR FROM LEBANON, NJ

There are lots of different ways of being Jewish at UVa. Of course there’s a religious component, with students who grew up with very strong Jewish backgrounds and traditions, but I was surprised that I found a space for me as well. With Hillel, there’s a whole different side of being Jewish - a side that is now a large part of my life on Grounds. And though it certainly taps into my Jewish identity, it does it in a more informal way.

UVa has a ton of really cool Jewish students who love simply doing fun things with other Jews. With my expectations about Jewish life and it being for a certain group of people, I never would have realized this. Luckily for me, I have my older brother was able to introduce me to some cool people on Grounds who brought me into Jewish life and showed me that being Jewish didn’t only mean being religious. Now, I am a member of a nationally Jewish fraternity, going to be Vice President for Jewish Social Connection, and going to be a First-Year Engagement Intern through Hillel to help incoming Jewish students find their place, as I found mine.

I thought being Jewish in college meant something strict and traditional, but take it from me, it doesn’t have to mean only that. Being Jewish at UVa for me has meant doing things I enjoy in the company of people who come from a similar background as me. It’s just one way to bring us together, and one way to make the University feel a little smaller.

I have learned how much fun it can be to be Jewish here and have met some amazing people because of it. It’s actually had an effect I didn’t realize it would, in that through my Jewish social connections, I’m becoming more spiritually connected. I even attended multiple Shabbat services as well as a Passover Seder at Hillel. Knowing I have good friends going to these events always makes it worthwhile, and has helped me explore a part of my identity I probably wouldn’t have. I encourage any Jewish students coming to UVa to give this community a shot. I did, and now it’s a huge part of my life.

Through the experiences that Hillel has provided me, the Brody Jewish Center has created a community of Jews for me at school that I call family. This network of close friends allows me to embrace my Jewish culture and celebrate it with others who share the same values. Next year, I am looking forward to continuing to strengthen the bonds I share with the friends I made on Birthright and beyond while continuing to explore Jewish culture.

ANNIE GOODSTEIN 3RD YEAR FROM ENCINITAS, CA

The Brody Jewish Center has been my second home since I arrived on Grounds. Hillel has given me best friends, mentors, and of course, countless Bodos bagels over the past three years.

This year, I served on the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) as President of the Jewish Religious Life Council.

In this role, I go to weekly meetings with the JLC board and work to coordinate weekly services and other religious events such as Havdalah on the Lawn. One of the most meaningful things for me is seeing a big improvement in attendance at weekly Shabbat services this year and extending the reach of religious involvement to students who may not have gotten it elsewhere. With an eye for what students find important, we’ve been working hard to keep services engaging while still keeping tradition alive. It is an interesting balance to strike, but I love the challenge it brings.

Overall, my UVa experience would not be the same without the Brody Jewish Center. Through Hillel, I have made lifelong friends, built invaluable leadership experience, explored Judaism, and traveled the world. I am so thankful for all of these experiences, and I cannot wait for another year of involvement with the DIAMOND BJC.

In March, I was lucky enough to travel to Berlin with 23 other students and Melissa for an unforgettable week learning about past, present, and future German society. Some highlights were speaking to members of Parliament and the State Department, along with an overnight trip to Dresden. Germany impacted me in a way that I can't quite explain, and I will never forget the memories and the lessons that I learned on this trip with Hillel.

ZACH 4TH YEAR FROM VIENNA, VA

SECOND YEAR

Jewish life at UVa has provided me with many incredible experiences and a community on Grounds that I can always call home. From Friday night Shabbat dinners to an incredible experience with Birthright, Jewish life has been a meaningful part of my time at UVa. From all the free food and good company at the Brody Jewish Center to climbing Masada with 39 other Jewish students from UVa, I’ll never forget my time with Hillel.

THIRD YEAR

As I leave UVa, I find myself wondering what I will take with me as I move on. Surely, an ineffable love for Bodos bagels and a preppy fashion sense - but what really, really counts are the experiences, and of these, the Brody Jewish Center provided some of the most memorable.

I didn’t come to UVa intimately involved in Jewish life and, as I leave, I can’t say much has changed. However, the BJC has affected me in deep and profound ways. During my time in Charlottesville, I took part in occasional Seders, Shabbat dinners, and other routine events, but what I really sprung for were the trips. Over the past four years, either through or with the support of the BJC, I’ve traveled to Israel for ten days, spent two months in Jerusalem living and working, and toured Germany and Berlin learning about German-Jewish history.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL? HILLEL HELPED 83 STUDENTS SEE THE WORLD THIS YEAR!

HILLEL AT UVA IS ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE HILLELS IN THE COUNTRY FOR IMPACTING A STUDENT’S JEWISH IDENTITY. THE MEASUREMENT IS CALLED THE “HILLEL EFFECT” AND HILLEL AT UVA RANKS SECOND NATIONALLY.

Now, I won’t be keeping kosher anytime soon, but as a person that’s been religiously apathetic for a very long time, these trips did something I never imagined: sparked a fire. I now yearn to learn more about my heritage, about Israel, and about Judaism as a whole. My time at UVa and the experiences I’ve had with Hillel have sparked something in me that I could have never imagined, and as I graduate, now it’s time to stoke the fire.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Brody Jewish Center, Hillel at the University of Virginia, please accept my most sincere appreciation for your support during this last year - my first serving as the Board’s President.

As you’ll see throughout our Impact Report, this year was one marked by record achievements across every measurable metric. We met and learned the stories of over 70% of Jewish students across Grounds, offered 28% more events and programming than ever before, doubled the amount of one-on-one meetings with students, and received the most-ever monetary support from individuals.

This year, The Brody Jewish Center was one of only a handful of Hillels in the world to achieve all of Hillel International’s Measuring Excellence metrics – meaning that we excelled at providing both breadth and depth of experiences to the University’s Jewish students. And while numbers and data are important, they’re just the beginning. The stories included in this Impact Report demonstrate the real effects of what it means to be excellent, and what it means to provide students with a space to cultivate their Jewish identities.

All of these achievements are thanks to your continued generosity, the work that our world-class staff has dedicated to the institution, and the remarkable intellectual curiosity of our students. I’m proud to highlight our growing staff, who have set the bar higher for what we can achieve as an organization with their dedication and acknowledged excellence across the movement. I’d also like to thank our Board of Directors for their continued active engagement, support, and work as mentors and advisors. Together with our students and community, we continue to push the envelope for what our Hillel can achieve.

As President of the Board I’m excited to continue investing in what we do and continue to build up the Brody Jewish Center as a sustainable and dynamic home for Jewish life at the University of Virginia. As an alumnus, I could have not asked for a better way to give back to the community that was so essential during my time in Charlottesville. When I was a student at the University, I had the pleasure of seeing our organization begin a transformative era ushered in by the construction of our wonderful new building. I never imagined we’d see such tremendous growth and momentum only six years later, but here we are.

I invite you to join me on the journey to continue this era of growth for the Brody Jewish Center – a place where hundreds of students are engaged in meaningful and individual ways, a place where students are empowered to explore their Jewish identities, and a place that for me and many others, is home.
